Chapter 14: Episode 4x07
Samantha Carter watched as Alexandra sat down for breakfast in front of her at the mess hall. Her tray was full.
"That's... a big breakfast." The leader of Atlantis mentioned with a chuckle.
"I'm starving, okay?" Alexandra sighed, taking a sip of her tea.
"You're still recharging. It's normal. It's been a while since..." Samantha didn't want to her to recall bad memories.
"I know. And you're right. It's just... It's weird. I feel weird. The sleep thing should have fixed things. Not making me hyped up." Alexandra shrugged.
"Maybe your body is going through a change." Samantha tried to put some sense in what Alexandra was telling her.
"Perhaps. I'll talk with Dr. Keller and maybe Rodney... Just to see if there is any changes at the cellular level."
The Atlantis leader kept her blue eyes on her younger friend. Change or not, something was different about Alexandra. She had been noticing it since her coming to the lost city.
"Do you feel anything different since the coma?"
"No. Wait… I got shot. Maybe the energy of the shot of messed with me...?" Alexandra trailed off in a thought. "Do you think the device did something to me?" The former major was now alarmed, yet curious at the same time.
"From the research Rodney has done, I don't believe so. But I was actually wondering... Do you feel something? Anything different? Aside that... weirdness?"
"Feel something? What, like a tingling?" The scientist frowned. "No, I don't think so. Wait..." Alexandra narrowed her eyes. " Feel as in feelings? Sam, c'mon, what I felt about Cam is long gone."
"No, I was actually thinking about…"
"Good morning, ladies." The pilot had a grin on his lips.
"Hey, John." Alexandra looked up with a smile. "You look... Cheery today."
"That's because I am."
"And why is that, Colonel?" Samantha asked, watching both. Closely.
"Since Teyla and Keller are going to New Athos, I was thinking on an incursion to the mainland and help out some of the scientists that arrived last week."
"Is that how you call it now? Help out?" Alexandra raised a brow, teasing him, as she ate her toast.
"I don't know what you mean, doc." He offered her a nonchalant stare.
"Right. Anyway, why are you telling us that?"
"Because I was wondering if you would like to come." His hazel eyes were fixed on her.
"I am not clear yet."
"You were training with Teyla the other night. It's been a week. C'mon… Sam, help me out." John turned to his C.O. that merely shrugged.
"I got shot, Sheppard. I was in a coma." Alexandra objected.
"She's right, John. Until Dr. Keller clears her completely, field duty is off the table." Samantha intervened.
John placed his hands in his pockets.
"It's not exactly field duty." He mumbled.
"Stop being a baby, Sheppard." Alexandra rolled her eyes at him. "I'll go next time."
"Fine. But you still me owe me a beer."
"Keep dreaming." It was Alexandra's turn to mumble.
"I will. Ma'am." And off he went.
Samantha turned her eyes to Alexandra, who was smiling into her tea.
"So, is there anything you would like to tell me?" She saw her friend look up, confused. "You and John?" Samantha waved her fork around at John's retreating form.
"What about it?"
"Alex, are you sure there isn't any... changes? I mean, I saw the way he reacted when you were in a coma. He didn't leave your side for two days until I reassured him you were going to be alright."
Hearing her friend's words made Alexandra become alert and more serious as she thought back on the last few weeks.
"Nothing is happening between us, Sam. I can assure you. We are just friends." She got defensive. She felt defensive towards that subject.
"I know. I just…" Samantha sighed. "Worry. After what happened with Cam…"
"What happened with Cam won't ever happen again. I can assure you that, Sam."
The words came out harsh and sad which made the former SG-1 team member frown and become angry at what had happened between her two friends.
"Alright. Alright. I'm just aware of how John is. And it can be easy to fall for it."
"I know how John is too, Sam. I deal with him every day and I do have ears." Alexandra sighed. "It's just the way he is. He hasn't and he won't ever try anything with me. Besided, I think he's afraid of my uncle, anyway."
Samantha snorted, not believing.
"Really? Afraid of Jack?"
"I think uncle Jack told him he was responsible for me and if anything happens to me." Alexandra rolled her eyes. "But do not worry. I'm not even John's type, Sam. So, there's no danger coming his way. Or my way. Whatever…"
"If you say so." The Atlantis leader sighed. "I just know how easy it is for a friendship to turn into…"
"Sam." Alexandra warned, giving her an annoyed look.
"Fine. Fine." Samantha made a gesture of zipping her lips. "I'll shut up. But I'm here if anything changes."
"I know. Thank you." The scientist smiled and her eyes caught her wrist watch. "I have to go. Things to translate. Rodney is killing me with everything is bringing from his travels." She gave her friend a tired but contented smile.
"Then, translate away." The Coronel smiled, seeing her friend leave the table.
Things might go Alexandra's way, but one thing was sure. After she had seen her shield envelop the Atlantian gate, change was coming, for better or for worse.
Ps: I hope you liked this little interaction between Sam and my OC. And, please, do leave a commment! Makes this writer's heart tick.
