ENTRY 6
THE TARGET

October 31st

The night of the Halloween Masquerade Ball. Tonight was my one and only chance to complete my mission under the cloak of darkness and behind my mask.

I curled and pinned up as much of my hair as possible to prevent my target from knowing who I am. I even purchased a pair of color contacts to conceal my real eye color from being recognized.

I smoked out my eyes to appear more mysterious and tightened the ribbons on the corset of my dress before stepping into a pair of clear plastic heels. I prayed I would be able to escape in them better then Cinderella did.

I parked my car close enough to the hotel's front doors so I would be able to make my exit when the time came. I tied my jewel incrusted mask over my eyes and checked my lip stick in my rear-view mirror before stepping out and sticking my key fob into my clutch.

People milled about outside of the hotel and around the lobby as I walked towards the doors to the ballroom where the masquerade ball was being held. I walked the perimeter of dance floor checking out those who were dancing but my target wasn't there.

I had heard he was going to be wearing a black leather mask and dark suit. Vague, I know but I also heard I would know him by the shape of said mask. I grabbed a drink from one of the waiters milling about and continued to survey the room.

It took a couple passes but I finally spotted him sitting across the room with a group of his friends. His mask covering the right side of his face, while the eye area on the left side was covered in dark eyeshadow.

He definitely gave off dark and mysterious vibes himself if I didn't already know who he was. I continued to watch him through out the night hiding amongst the crowd. I knew I would need to approach him eventually if I was ever going to get close enough to complete my task.

Eventually his friends left the table and made their way onto the dance floor and I decided the best course of action was to ask him to dance. The music changed to a slow song and I knew I wouldn't have much time left before it was midnight and the unmasking would begin.

"Nice eyeshadow. Care to dance?" I whispered from over his shoulder. I could see the skin on his neck start to rise from the contact.

"Do I know you?" He asked turning around to face me.

"Dance with me and maybe you'll find out." I smirked as I took him by the hand and drew us out to the middle of the floor.

"Jessica?" He asked as I wrapped my arms around him and we started to sway.

"Nope."

"Lauren?"

"Not even close."

We continued to dance as he threw out name after name. I started to think either I really did do a good job at concealing my identity or maybe he really had no clue who I am. Maybe this would make the job easier and he would simply remain clueless.

"The unmasking is happening soon. Will I find out then who you are?" He smirked at me as I pulled myself out of his arms.

"I'll give you one more guess and if you're right, I'll give you a surprise."

Everyone around us began to count down while I stared into his eyes praying that he would know I existed and hopefully forgive me for what I must do. A part of me prayed that he wouldn't guess right so that when I made my escape I could go on living with a clear conscious.

"I know…I'm surprise I didn't guess it from your costume, your favorite princess. Tanya…right?"

Around us cheers erupted as the clock struck midnight and couples around us kissed and pulled off their masks.

"Wrong again, but I like you so I'll give you your surprise anyways."

And with that I leaned in and kissed him. I saw his eyes drift close and I could feel him start to pull me in closer as he deepened the kiss, but I had already stayed too long. I knew I needed to make my move and escape.

"I love you!" I whispered and with those words I did what I had come here to do and left.
