"Dying

Is an art, like everything else.

I do it exceptionally well.

I do it so it feels like hell.

I do it so it feels real.

I guess you could say I have a call."

― Sylvia Plath, Ariel

Ultraviolet (UV) is a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than X-rays. UV radiation is present in sunlight, and constitutes about 10% of the total electromagnetic radiation output from the Sun.

Short-wave ultraviolet light damages DNA and sterilizes surfaces with which it comes into contact. Ultraviolet light (specifically, UVB) is also responsible for the formation of vitamin D in most land vertebrates, including humans. The UV spectrum, thus, has effects both beneficial and harmful to life.

Oh, you made your mark

I've been sunkissed

Now if these freckles faded, they'd be so missed

So don't say you'll try to protect me

'Cause love is only worth it when it's deadly

Come on, do me some damage

Don't you see that's okay?

'Cause you're not, no, you're not to blame

So let the burn begin…

Ultraviolet · Au/Ra

Prologue

I was burning.

My body was licked by razor-sharp tongues of living fire. My veins were no longer filled with incredibly sweet-smelling blood. Magma was now flowing through every smallest vein, eating me alive. I wanted to scream, to let out that one last scream before the fire that was tearing through my dying body consumed me completely. I tried, but my still mouth closed, too numb from the fight that was boiling inside me like a volcano about to erupt. I felt like I was floating in the void, I couldn't see anything on the waves of nothingness. Just this pain escaping from my hand, slowly and stubbornly changing every cell in me.

"No, Bella! Oh no!" cried the devastated angel.

I felt his presence right next to me. His melodious voice constantly repeating my name. And those sounds... So terrifying that even the soothing voice of my angel didn't seem to come through.

Suddenly something crunched, murmured ominously, howled, and then broke off after a second...

"Bella, please, no! Please! Carlisle, do something!" My angel moaned in pain.

I wanted to answer him, reassure him that everything was fine and we would be together soon. But I could not. My paralyzed body no longer made any sound.

"Carlisle!" the angel shouted in despair. "Carlisle, don't let her die!" he burst into spasmodic sobs.

"Edward, it's too late," said the doctor, squeezing my hand and examining it in his cold fingers. "The venom spreads faster than I thought. We can't do anything for her anymore. She has to go through this to the end. Otherwise she will die."

I heard Edward groan in devastation. My heart began to beat faster and faster, pumping at a mad gallop. The piercing pain had already left my ankles and the tips of my hands, providing relief, but not for long. The fire inside me was spreading to the rest of my body, devouring new areas in its merciless hunger.

I felt the icy floor and glass beneath me. As I realized where I was, I shivered. Lying stiffly, I arched my back, not allowing the rest of my body to even move.

"We need to move her," Carlisle said calmly.

"The whole room is on fire," a woman called from a distance.

Alice?

"We have to hurry," I felt someone lifting me. "I'm not sure how long the morphine will last." His intoxicating scent enveloped me. "Everything will be fine, my love, you'll see," he whispered. I felt his cool lips on my temple.

The pain continued in intensity. I felt that I was floating in an increasingly deeper non-existence. Each of my limbs hung limply in his marble embrace. The sound of a car door closing reached me before darkness took my consciousness for good.

It was the beginning of my change.
