Chapter 26: Scared Stupid Part 1

"Ahh! This is gonna be awesome!"

Sonic gushed excitedly as he, Tails, and Knuckles helped Tom and Maddie set up the decorations around the house, including fake webs, fake ghosts, fake witches, and fake dismembered body parts.

"I still do not understand this 'Halloween'." Knuckles stated.

"Yeah, from what I've heard it's basically a holiday where you go out at night and demand candy from strangers, and then prank them if they refuse to give you any." Tails added, sounding more curious than confused.

Tom chuckled while Maddie stifled a laugh. "Well, that is one aspect of it." Tom said amusedly.

"The real point of Halloween is that it's just a night where you can dress up, hang out with your friends, and just have a fun time." Maddie added, smiling warmly.

"Exactly!" Sonic smiled before turning to his brothers. "I guarantee that tonight's gonna be awesome! Trick or treating is gonna be so fun!"

Tails smiled as well. "Well, if we're gonna go trick or treating, we're gonna need costumes!" He said before he rubbed his chin in thought, his namesakes swishing slightly. "But what should we dress up as?"

Sonic hummed in thought before he lit up. "How about… we dress up as our favorite superheroes?"

Tails cheered cutely. "Cool! Sounds fun!"

Knuckles frowned slightly. "I still fail to see the point of dressing up."

A couple weeks later, it was Halloween night as the sun had set over the horizon and people had already begun trick or treating.

Sonic smiled proudly as he admired his Flash costume in the mirror, the red fabric with gold outlines fitting snugly around his fur. He had bought the costume at the store and had Ms. Marin, the local tailor, modify it to fit him better.

Smiling excitedly, Sonic grabbed his jack-o-lantern bucket and rushing downstairs towards the front door.

This was not only going to be his first actual time trick-or-treating, but it was also going to be his first time trick-or-treating with his brothers.

"Oh, look at you, blueberry, all dressed up and ready to go." Maddie smiled, kneeling down and kissing Sonic on the forehead.

"Mo-om!" Sonic whined, playfully pushing her away.

"You guys ready?" Tails asked, coming into the room, giving Sonic and Maddie a chance to see his costume.

Tails was wearing what seemed to be a customized blue hoodie with a peach belly and hood that seemed to resemble quills out the back. He wore small blue pants with holes cut in the back for his tails along with a pair of shoes that strikingly resembled Sonic's.

Sonic blinked as the realization came to him. "Are… are you dressed up as me?" He asked.

Tails smiled bashfully, folding his hands behind his back and rocking back and forth on his heels. "Well, you said we should dress up as our favorite superheroes for this year, and as much as I like guys like Iron Man and Robin, the truth is that my favorite superhero… has always been Sonic the Hedgehog."

Tails laughed nervously. "Sorry if it's creepy." He said, voice shy as he turned to leave.

"Oh, no! No! It's not!" Sonic quickly exclaimed, gently grabbing Tails by the shoulder and keeping him from leaving.

Sonic let out a laugh. "Tails… that's so sweet." He said, his eyes burning a bit with unshed tears.

Tails smiled shyly. "You really think so?" He asked timidly.

Sonic chuckled. "I know so." He replied, hugging the little fox cub and nuzzling Tails' cheek, earning some giggles from the kit.

"Still, Sonic's right, you do look adorable." Maddie smiled, hugging Tails from behind affectionately.

"Mo-om!" Tails whined, giggling as he blushed in embarrassment.

Knuckles soon came out as well, not wearing a costume at all.

Sonic and Tails both looked confused. "Uh, Knux, you know you're supposed to dress up for Halloween, right?" Sonic said rhetorically.

Knuckles folded his arms. "I will not dishonor my own self image by pretending to be someone else." He said stubbornly.

Sonic and Tails glanced at each other before shrugging and letting it go.

"Now, you boys stay together and be back before midnight, okay?" Maddie told them sternly. "No staying out too long after that."

"Mom, don't worry, we can handle ourselves." Sonic reassured her. "We've got a super speedy hedgehog, a genius fox who can fly, and a super strong echidna warrior. I think we'll be fine."

"Yeah, we'll call you if we're gonna be late, Mom." Tails added enthusiastically.

Maddie smiled, kissing each of them on the forehead. "Have a good time, boys."

"We will, Mom." Sonic replied as he, Tails, and Knuckles headed out the door and into the neighborhood.

Walking out the front door and going down the road towards the main town, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were surprised by the sheer amount of people out on the streets.

Dozens of children, all dressed in costumes, some with parents, others in groups, were cruising down the street, some stopping briefly at houses to get candy before moving on. Lights and decorations covered the houses and buildings with ghouls, vampires, zombies, skeletons, and other sorts of bone-chilling creatures.

"Wow," Tails whispered in surprise and slightly nervousness, not really used to seeing so many people. "There sure are a lot of people out tonight."

"C'mon, let's get some candy before it's all gone!" Sonic exclaimed, already zipping over to the nearest house in a blue blur.

"Wha-! Sonic, wait for me!" Tails cried, whirling his namesakes and taking off after his older brother.

Knuckles sighed, shaking his head fondly with a smile as he lightly jogged to catch up with them.

Arriving at the doorstep of the first house, Sonic turned to his brothers. "Watch carefully, bros. I'll teach you some of the finer points of trick-or-treating." He said.

Tails nervously hid behind Sonic while Knuckles tapped his foot impatiently.

"Now, just remember; when they open the door, all you gotta do is hold out your bag and go 'trick-or-treat', and they let you get candy." Sonic explained before knocking on the door.

Within seconds, a large woman dressed in a devil costume opened the door.

"Trick-or-treat!" Sonic said, holding out his bag.

"T-Trick-or-treat." Tails murmured timidly, also holding out his bag.

Knuckles remained silent as he simply held out his bag.

"Oh, how adorable!" The woman gushed before taking out a bowl of candy and dumping two pieces into each one. "Here you go, kids."

Sonic cheered as he looked into the bag. "First candy of the night!"

Knuckles huffed as he simply walked back out towards the street.

Tails, meanwhile, remained where he stood, seemingly frozen in shock as he stared at his bag with wide eyes.

"Hey, Tails, you coming?" Sonic asked, gently grasping the little fox's shoulder with a concerned look.

Snapping out of his trance, Tails blinked before he smiled. "Y-Yeah! C'mon, let's go!" He exclaimed, giggling happily as he skipped down the street.

Sonic smiled fondly at the fox cub before jogging after him.

A few hours went by as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles roamed around the neighborhood, collecting candy from different houses, getting some compliments on their costumes, and even doing a few Halloween mazes.

So far, they were having a great time, even Knuckles.

Sonic and Tails cheered as they skipped down the street, both their buckets almost completely filled to the brim with candy.

"Man, I wish we had something like Halloween back on Mobius!" Tails smiled as they continued on Trick-or-Treating. He then pulled out his miles electric and checked the time.

11:49 pm.

"Ooh…" Tails winced before turning to Sonic and Knuckles. "Guys, it's nearly twelve. We should get home before Mom starts to worry."

"Oh, c'mon, Tails, just one more house?" Sonic insisted.

Knuckles, on the other hand, disagreed. "I believe we have more than enough candy, Sonic. Let us go home."

"Pleeeease? Just one more house and we can zip right home before they know anything." Sonic pleaded, even giving Tails and Knuckles the 'puppy-dog eyes'.

"Well… I guess one more house wouldn't hurt." Tails admitted, as he too was hesitant to hang up the costume for the year.

Knuckles sighed. "Very well. One more house and we go home."

"Yes! Thank you guys so much!" Sonic cheered, briefly hugging his brothers (much to Tails' delight and Knuckles' slight annoyance.)

As they strolled down the street, the three mobian children found themselves going off the road into town and into the more rural area of the neighberhood. Massive pine trees filled the area as there was no sign of any houses nearby.

"So, why are we out here?" Tails asked.

"Because we haven't really been to this part of town all night." Sonic explained. "In fact, I don't think I've been around this area of town that much at all."

"Then what makes you so sure that our last house will be here?" Knuckles questioned.

"Look, I'm sure there's houses down here. We just have to… keep… look…" Sonic trailed off as he looked ahead.

Tails and Knuckles looked ahead as well and found themselves gapping with their brother at what they saw.

At the end of the road was large old mansion near the forest with a large front yard filled with dying trees that had a stone fountain in the middle of it. The wood of the house looked old and decrepit with no decorations, but there were lights that could be seen in the windows.

The place looked like the perfect haunted house.

To add to the effect, the clouds that had gathered in the sky rumbled as a single lightning bolt flashed across the sky.

Tails yelped at the sound of the thunder, instinctively leaping onto Sonic's back and shaking fearfully.

Sonic let out a low whistle. "Nice touch." He remarked in regards to the lightning as he pulled Tails off his back and gently cradled him in a comforting embrace.

"Let's just get this over with." Knuckles stated. "I believe the fox is getting scared."

Sonic glanced down at Tails, who was still shaking in his arms. "It's okay, buddy. Just this house and then we go home, okay?"

Tails looked up at his big brother nervously before he reluctantly nodded.

Stepping through the gates and going right up to the door, Sonic pressed the button on the door bell.

"Trick-or-treat!" He said, holding out his bucket.

The three of them waited at the door, only for nobody to come.

"Doesn't look like anyone's home." Tails quietly spoke up.

Sonic sighed in disappointment. "Yeah, looks like it." He mumbled. "C'mon, let's go home."

However, before the three of them could turn to leave, a trap door on the doorstep to suddenly fall open beneath their feet.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all gasped in surprise. "AAAAAHHHHHH…!" They all screamed, dropping their buckets of candy on the doorstep as they fell down into the dark pit below…
