Batman was watching a man for approximately two hours. A man walked from his work at the Gotham City Clerk's Office home. A man didn't meet anyone or talk to anyone. He also didn't use a subway or a bus he was walking for forty minutes. A man got to his building and went up on an elevator. Batman knew a man's address and he prepared himself a spot on a roof of the building across the street. He knew which windows were going to lit up when a man came home. A man turned on lights as soon as he walked into an apartment. Was he afraid of something or somebody or he just didn't like to be in the dark? A man walked all apartment back and forth checking corners and doors. He was definitely afraid of somebody… Batman saw a man in his special binocular. He saw his face and it was concerned and worried. What was he expecting or whom? A man went to the kitchen and took some cookies from a top shelf. He set behind a dining table and started to eat. He was waiting for somebody to come… somebody who was supposed to be here already but didn't show up yet. A man was waiting for thirty minutes just eating cookies and drinking water from one big plastic cup. Thirty minutes passed and a man stood up suddenly he started to walk around a living room scratching nervously his hands. Batman saw a man grabbing his phone couple of times but he never dial anything on it and he put it back every time. Then he got his coat back and left the house and he walked all the way back to work. Batman followed and saw a man getting back to his office cubicle.
A man was sitting there in the dark until he heard a sound. He got scared. Should he call downstairs for the security or check a room next to his work place. He stood up and walk and he heard a small noise again. It was coming from a kitchen room. A man walked in carefully and froze when he saw a big figure of Batman.
-Whom are you running from Clyde? - asked a figure.
-What! Who are you! I mean, what are you doing here?!
-I have questions Clyde and I need answers. - Batman grabbed a man and picked him up. Clyde didn't scream he was terrified and he wanted to cry but he couldn't do it. He was just soft and small man who was scared to death.
-Answers! - roared Bagman
-What? What answers do you want? - Clyde's voice was trembling.
-Where can I find Evan? What is his next move? And why are you so afraid for your life?
-Aaaa…. - Clyde's voice was weak and he didn't scream. - I'm afraid… I'm afraid of him… him
-Evan?
-Yes. Yes!
-Why? Are you not an orphan who suppose to help him, be on his side, do what he says or writes in his symbols?
-I am… I am an orphan. And it took me a lot to get to where I am now and I don't want to lose it. - Clyde was very serious now and Batman placed him back on his feet. Batman was listening carefully and Clyde set down on an office chair wiping down sweat from his forehead.
-Yeh… I don't want to lose it. That's why when he called us all I came as usual but when I heard what he was proposing I couldn't make myself agree with him. All these years I was his supporter because I believed in his ideas about clean Gotham but I didn't expect that it would mean to kill half of its population. I refused to help… and now I'm scared. I'm scared Batman! Can you help me?
-I can get you to a police department I have good people there but first you have to tell me everything you know.
-No! No! I won't go to police! He has his people there! Do you know how many orphans work for police! They are all supporters! They will kill me!
-They are policemen who swore protect and defend people of Gotham.
-Until he tells them otherwise! I'm telling you he created very good system for us to communicate. We have our own secured app to communicate but even if it wold be broken by feds they won't find anything except bunch of symbols they won't figure out in million years. He is very good at tech and computer programming. Evan created an app and the language for this app and he taught us years after years to his symbols and eventually he got to every orphan older then sixteen. All of us in there and believe me no one against him!
-Not all orphans. There is somebody who helped me to decipher his symbols and now I can read them. I need this app and you will give it to me even if you don't want.
-Her! She helped you! Justice! - Clyde's face brightened.
-You know her?
-I remember her, yes. We never were friends but we were in the same home. Evan and she were friends and they made this symbol language in the first place. We all laughed at them and now look at us we felt for it and she didn't. I want to help! The app is connected only to the phone itself and you won't be able to download it on your own.
-I will need your phone and password.
-He is going to kill me! I…I… can't.
-If you want your life back… if you want to put stop on killings of innocent people… if you want to save some of your peers from being killed, arrested and convicted in crimes against the humanity… you have to give me your phone. Choice still yours.
-I don't know … I don't … - Clyde stood up from a chair and walked back and forth in the office kitchen scratching his arms viciously. - I know one thing! I know that everyone who is not with Evan automatically goes on his kill list. I and Justice are in grave danger at this very moment.
Clyde was standing in the middle of a room with a phone in his hand undecided when Batman noticed a small red glimpse on a window behind the man. One second he got next to Clyde and it was the moment when a window spattered. Batman covered a man with his cape and got them both in the next room. A copy room with no windows was a good cover but it didn't matter for Clyde.
-Here… here I will unlock it but he probably already deleted me from it. Take it. It yours. - Clyde was bleeding from a back wound. The bullet broke his spine and the last words he said were his password and user name. He lost his breath staring onto the ceiling with dead eyes and tears going down his cheekbones.
