Hidan held a pocket knife out to her. "I am going to teach you to use this."
"I don't think…" Hinata waved her hands.
"That fucker may not have touched you, but the next might." Hidan shook it for her to take.
Hinata took it and struggled to open it until she found the locking button. "I am not trying to kill them."
"If they feel the need to fucking touch you, they aren't concerned about their own life." Hidan knew she knew what he was talking about, and just because she didn't want to think about it didn't mean that it couldn't happen. He didn't want to turn his back and have some seedy bastard trying to feel her up because she was too scared to say anything. Running around with him was going to take them to some shitty places she didn't belong. She needed to protect herself because he couldn't watch her every second.
Hinata rolled it into her hand to hold it daintily like silverware.
"Sweetheart, you are going to stab yourself." Hidan took it back. "I'll teach you to use it."
"I don't think it's necessary." Hinata reasoned. "I can defend myself just fine without it."
"Let's find out." Hidan twirled the knife in his hand to wield it. "Try to take it."
Hidan's back hit the ground, and the knife scattered across the floor as Hinata pinned him to the floor with her knee on his chest and her forearm at his throat. "What the fuck was that!?"
"I took martial arts throughout school." Hinata kept up with his struggle.
Hidan huffed in defeat, laying his hands on her hips. "Why hasn't this ever come up before?"
Hinata sat back on his hips. "I try to forget about it. I stopped in university because I never enjoyed it."
"Why didn't you defend yourself?" Hidan waved his hands out.
"That guy didn't touch me," Hinata shrugged.
"No against your dad." Hidan clarified.
Hinata's stomach dropped. "I did, but I was scared. I didn't think it was really happening."
"Ow." Hidan moved her knee from the center of his chest to the other side of him. "You know this is kinda hot."
Hinata squeaked, realizing the position they were in. She tried to get up, but Hidan snagged her hips and reached up to pull her head down to him. He took one kiss and then let her go to chuckle at her face.
Irritation hit her. He was going to regret thinking this was funny. Hinata reconnected their lips.
Hidan grinned into it and rolled them over.
Hinata dug into their bags. Hidan packed last and didn't care who's bag their things when in, and she couldn't find anything. She was just going to take everything out and make sure she was the one who picked up next time because he couldn't be trusted. She made a face as she pulled out a pack of playing cards from the bottom. She held it up with a question. "Where did we get this?"
"Oh." Hidan opened his hands, and Hinata tossed it to him. "This was in a free basket somewhere. Thought it could make us some money. In prison, I used to do a card scam with the bastard I bunked with."
"Kakuzu-san?" Hinata finished what she was doing to come to sit with him. "How does it work?"
"Oh, are you going to help?" Hidan raised an eyebrow.
"I don't know. I've never played cards." Hinata pulled her legs to sit comfortably. Something she realized she was doing more often, not sitting like a perfect lady like she was trained to.
"Fuck it. Let's learn. Cute girls make good bait." Hidan opened the cards, and Hinata scooted back on the bed to give him room to place them.
"Open," Hidan told her as he held his food up to her mouth. Hinata took a bite and covered her mouth to chew. "Good?" Hinata nodded.
Hinata thought she would get sick of all the street food, but Hidan knew how to find good places, usually that specialized in meat, and as long as she drank enough water, she hadn't felt ill yet. Hidan never drank enough water, but he would mindlessly chug a drink that he had a hold of so she could just put a bottle in his hand, and it worked out.
"I am getting used to hair." Hidan nodded at her.
Hinata touched the ends. She had cut it differently to keep from being recognized, but she thought the sunglasses were what changed her face more. Their faces were all over the news, but they were so far away from home that the local police didn't seem to be actively looking for them, and no one had picked them out yet. "I think yours is more of a drastic change."
"I keep fucking spooking myself in mirrors." Hidan rubbed his hair with his open hand. Dyeing it wasn't hard. Dyeing his eyebrows was more trouble.
"I think you will get used to it." Hinata pulled his hand down to take another bite.
Hidan stretched before curling back around Hinata's fluff prison she wrapped around herself every night. Why did he bother getting rooms with two beds if she was just going to sleep with him?
Well, he knew why. He was still waiting for it to click for her that he wasn't her knight in shining armor. He was just the rogue bandit who was too invested. Hinata was a normal woman who had a normal life that he stole from her by not just leaving her there to lie about the whole thing. She came with him willingly and had been even getting to the point where she was enjoying herself, but he knew the reason she still cuddled up on his bed was because she was afraid that if she laid alone, she would cry herself asleep.
Hidan just hoped she would be crying over her lost innocence and not that bastard.
Eventually, she was going to see something she couldn't justify anymore, and it could have been something that he already did. It could be something he did without thinking. It could be something he would do intentionally tomorrow.
Hinata hummed as her eyes fluttered open and looked up at him before nodding her head back into his chest. "Is it morning?"
"No, got back to sleep." Hidan tightened his arm.
"Are you lying to me again so we can sleep in?" Hinata turned to look at the clock.
"You're barely a person in the morning. Why do you want to be up so early?" Hidan grumbled. Hinata liked to wake up early and go to bed at a 'reasonable time.' This fucking school teacher didn't realize there were no rules on the run. Who cares if you sleep all day?
Okay, maybe it was nice being up when places served breakfast and not struggling to find a place other than a bar for dinner, and even they usually closed the kitchen at some point but … fuck off.
Hinata turned back into his chest and made a comfortable noise as she settled back in. "We should have bagels for breakfast."
Hidan snorted. "Okay. We can find a place that sells bagels in the morning."
"And fruit." Hinata hummed.
She had to make it healthy somehow, didn't she? She couldn't just eat carbs. "Alright."
Hinata looked at a postcard outside a nearby shop, and the thought that came to mind gave her pause. Why was her first thought to send it to Hidan when he was right here?
Maybe because she spent too many years thinking things like that, she never had anyone else she could send it to, and she couldn't send it to Neji now, though she wished she could.
"What does that look like to you?" Hidan's eyebrows knit together.
Hinata followed his eyes to see the very end of a younger girl under an older man's arm as they disappeared into a building. The girl was in a revealing dress, but that could have been a choice. Hinata didn't see the expression on her face. It was only Hidan's reaction that made her worry for her.
Hidan made a face and turned his head. "Never mind."
Hidan liked to think that he was the worst person, but the only thing that made him horrendous was what he did about what he didn't like. Yes, he was a crass bastard who said what he wanted and didn't care who he hurt when he did, but his moral compass was solid as long as he could do whatever he wanted to 'correct' it. And honestly, Hinata had seen one too many heartbreaking stories on the news to disagree with him.
Hidan's arm came around her shoulders as he walked down the street. "I don't get what guys like about a woman in a skimpy dress. It's less to peel off."
Hinata wasn't going to look too far into that comment.
