Corruption of Yuan Shu

It was 199 AD, after finally united the lands of Wu, Sun Ce set to work governing well and to restoring peace and order to Yang Province, he also tried to get more skilled officers to join his ranks, as well as people to help in political situations and governance. This allowed him to recruit the famous Two Zhangs, Zhang Zhao and Zhang Hong, while also welcoming former officers of Liu Yao who had surrendered, like Yu Fan and Xu Gong.

He also made connections to the four clans of Wu and won their support, leading to the recruitment of the young but talented Lu Xun, as well as other officers like Ding Feng, Xu Sheng and another warrior Ling Cao. These were but the most notable names amongst the many who Sun Ce had managed to recruit to his side and began helping the lands of Wu prosper.

Meanwhile things were not going well for Yuan Shu, having simply not managed to expand his lands at all. On the contrary Yuan Shao had managed to conquer Bing Province and sent Zhang Yan and the Heishan Bandits on the run, but Yuan Shao's suspicion of Lu Bu prompted the man himself to flee to Xu Province where he ended up under Liu Bei's protection, until he betrayed him and took over, then in 198 AD, Liu Bei joined forces with Cao-Cao, who had just conquered Wan castle in the very north of Jing Province the previous year, together they claimed Xu Province and managed to defeat and execute Lu Bu, along with several officers who didn't surrender.

Only one officer who didn't surrender was spared, Zhang Liao who instead ended up becoming an officer for Cao-Cao after being showing great respect despite his refusal to surrender.

As things stood, Liu Zhang in Yi Province and Liu Biao still held their lands, although Zhang Lu had taken Hanzhong from Liu Zhang. Ma Teng also still held his lands while Si Province remained empty. Cao-Cao and Liu Bei still had their alliance, although technically Liu Bei was stuck under Cao-Cao's control. Sun Ce had returned the surviving Yuan Shu troops, that hadn't wanted to join him, to Yuan Shu but the man himself was not happy.

He knew full well now that he had made a mistake letting Sun Ce take over Yang Province, as now Sun Ce had more troops, more supplies, more territory, basically more power than him and he did not trust Sun Ce's words of ruling said lands in Yuan Shu's name. Worse for him, Gongsun Zan, his last ally, had finally fallen and with the exception of Liaodong, Yuan Shao now controlled You Province too.

He therefore made up his mind and, not realizing where the corrupting whispers in his ear were truly coming from, Yuan Shu picked up the Imperial Seal and decided to do the unthinkable. Sun Ce was outraged when he received the missive from Yuan Shu, demanding his submission and aid him in standing against his enemies, having declared himself Emperor of the Zhong Dynasty, using the Imperial Seal to declare his claim, something which was having a ripple effect throughout the land. But not in the way Yuan Shu had wanted or hoped. In outrage, Sun Ce replied bluntly, telling Yuan Shu that he had returned the troops and wished his collateral back. A subtle hint that he was not recognizing Yuan Shu's claim through the Imperial Seal.

This of course angered Yuan Shu, but he couldn't take action, Sun Ce was going to move first, having responded to another missive, this one from Cao-Cao, declaring Yuan Shu a traitor and urging other warlords to rise up against him. So it was that Sun Ce joined this alliance, led by Cao-Cao and Liu Bei, to stand against and destroy the traitor, Yuan Shu.
