Chicken Pox
"Emma stop scratching," Snow reprimanded for what seemed like the millionth time this morning. "I will tape those oven mitts to your hands if you don't stop."
"But Mom, the itching…" She woke up this morning covered in red dots. They were driving her crazy.
"I know, Em," Snow sighed. "You're only going to make the chicken pox worse though."
"Ugh, fine." Emma put her hands between her legs to try and keep herself from scratching.
"Mom…" Hanna said as she made her way down the stairs.
Snow looked up to find her other daughter covered in the red spots as well. "Oh no…"
"I don't feel very well and I'm really itchy," Hanna said as she scratched at her arms, legs, neck…the red dots were everywhere.
"It's seems you and your sister have come down with the chicken pox," Snow said with a sigh.
"The what?" Hanna asked.
"Chicken pox, Han," Emma said as she held her hands tighter between her legs. The urge to scratch the dots right off of her skin was becoming unbearable. "You get covered in these red itchy dots and feel like crap for a week."
"Alright, Neal is safely at Granny's," David said as he came back into the loft. "She'll keep him for a few days until you're feeling better."
"Did you get the lotion?" Snow asked.
"Right here." David placed the bag on the table.
"You might have to run out for some more," Snow told him.
"Why? This should be enough for…" He looked up and finally noticed Hanna. Emma wouldn't be the only one needing the lotion. "Aww princess, you too?"
Hanna nodded her head and continued to scratch the dots on her face.
"No scratching sweetie." Snow pulled Hanna's hands down. "You'll end up with scars if you do that."
"But Mom…" Hanna tried to wriggle her hands free from her mom's firm grasp. "They're itchy!"
"I know. I know, but you can't"
"Resist the urge Han or mom will tape oven mitts to your hands," Emma told her.
Hanna looked at her mom and furrowed her eyebrows.
"Don't look at me like that. I'll use them if I have to," Snow turned back to Emma. "I have several pairs, so there's enough for you too young lady."
Emma rolled her eyes and continued to squirm to keep herself from scratching. "This totally sucks."
Snow turned back to her youngest. She still had a firm grip on her hands. "I'm going to let go, but no scratching, okay?"
Hanna nodded.
"Okay." Snow let go and got the lotion from her husband. "Let's get some of this lotion on you two and then you're both going right to bed."
"Can't we at least lay on the couch and watch tv?" Emma asked.
"Fine," Snow sighed. "But if you start scratching you're going to bed."
"Okay. Let's just go get this over with." Emma said as she went with her mom and Hanna to put on the lotion.
Emma and Hanna were settled on the couch. The lotion was helping with the itching. They picked out a movie and relaxed.
"I made you girls some soup," David said as he walked into the room carrying a tray. He set it on the coffee table.
"Dad I'm not hungry," Hanna whined.
"Couldn't we just have some hot chocolate instead?" Emma asked.
"Oh yeah! Hot chocolate would be way better."
David shook his head. "No hot chocolates until you eat your soup."
Emma and Hanna looked at each other. "Fine," they both agreed and sat up and ate.
Snow came in just as they were finished. "Okay girls, let's see how those fevers are doing." She reached out a thermometer to Emma and one to Hanna.
Both girls just sat not taking them.
Snow raised their eyebrows at them. "Girls."
"We want our hot chocolate first." Emma demanded.
"Yeah we ate all of our soup and Dad said we could have some," Hanna added.
"Girls listen to your mother," David called from the kitchen.
"But Dad!" the girls both whined.
"I'll make the hot chocolate while you take your temperature."
Emma and Hanna groaned, but they took the thermometers from their mom and put them into their mouths.
Once they beeped, Snow quickly took them from their mouths before the girls could. "Still a little high," Snow sighed. "Here take these." She held out some medicine to them.
Emma and Hanna looked at their mom, then towards the kitchen.
"Girls, the hot chocolate isn't ready yet, so just take these please."
The girls took their pills and soon after their dad came in with a tray filled with hot chocolate. He handed a mug to each of his girls. Snow took a mug and sat down next to Hanna. David picked up the last one and sat down next to Emma.
Snow and David met eyes with each other over their daughter's heads. They felt bad that their girls were sick, but they knew this wasn't too serious and the girls would be better soon. They did learn there was a perk to your kids being sick…as soon as the girls finished their hot chocolates, they snuggled into their parents to enjoy the rest of their movie. Neither one made it to the end though and had fallen fast asleep wrapped in their parent's arms.
