Chapter Four: Seniors.
Their friendship was based on pretentious activities, insincere affection and most importantly – fear.
They went by the name Dark Angels. It included females of the highest ranking families whose status could not, would not and should not be questioned. These people were stupidly rich, had power and serious influence. With just a snap of the finger, they could end the life of any lowlife they desired.
Their children were feared and respected by great people despite them being only teenagers. That filled them with pride and fed their egos. They wouldn't need to work for anything ever and so would their future generations.
And now with the upcoming marriage of the children of two powerful families, the most powerful and influential partnership was about to be formed.
The Dark Angels were Azula, Mai and Ty Lee. The daughters of the most influential families in the Fire Nation – Ty Lee was the most eligible daughter in her family which is why she was chosen as a representative. Mai, the only daughter of her family, was betrothed in order to create the most beneficial contract in Fire Nation history. And finally, Azula, the Regina George of this power trio, was the daughter of Ozai, a descendant of the outdated Fire Nation royal family. She was born to lead, be the queen bee, to be in charge. Intelligent, decisive and cunning, she was the only one fit to lead a mini gang of spoiled brats.
These girls had just begun a new school year just like any other student. Despite them all being the same age, sixteen, Azula was resuming as a senior alongside her older brother, Zuko while Mai and Ty Lee remained juniors. She was a prodigy indeed, surpassing even her brother in everything they did. Be it speaking, walking, common etiquette or even things as simple as breathing, Azula always did it better.
Azula and Ty Lee rode to school together, excluding Mai ever since her engagement to Zuko. The dark haired beauty stepped out of the black Range Rover, her silky long hair flying in the direction of the wind, which happened to be just in the right angle. She adjusted her black blazer jacket and fixed her golden badge that read "AZULA" in bold capital letters. One of the glories that came with being influential is that people will trust you with positions of power – such as head girl.
A sinister smirk played on her small red lips as she watched her fellow students fill the parking lot, ready to serve her. She was overjoyed at the swarm of people older and younger than her bowing at her feet.
She sniffed the air. "Do you smell that, Ty?"
Ty Lee stopped her stretching and looked at Azula, her big round grey eyes staring at her in sparkly innocence. "Smell what?" her voice was cute and complemented her equally cute face.
Azula looked around her. Everyone at this school answered to her. She dominated every soul here. This was where she was meant to be – on top.
Her eyes darkened. "Power."
Sweat trickled down his forehead as he pulled the tip of his wolftail in extreme nervousness; his heartbeat increasing with every step he took. He was moving further away from the cause of his distress but it seemed as though with every step, the voice grew louder. Was this person following him?
He took another uneasy breath and stopped running from no one. He wiped the beads of sweat off his forehead and sighed, leaning on a random locker. He ignored the awkward stares thrown at him and focused instead on regaining his composure.
"Come on, Sokka!" he scolded himself loudly. He slapped himself which echoed throughout the sparsely populated hallway, earning him some more stares and now accompanied with whispers.
After finding his mind, he looked around himself and sighed. He had panicked again. This time in front of people! There's no way he'd find an excuse for his erratic behaviour. His father and sister had begged him to see someone about it but there was no way in hell that he'd visit a shrink. He wasn't crazy…just- just guilt-ridden. And one day – he hoped – he'd be rid of it. He just had to wait; let time do it's thing.
"It wasn't your fault…" he kept on repeating those words as he strolled past worried looking classmates and his freaked out peers, going to his locker to retrieve his things.
Finally reaching his locker, as he opened it, he heard a his name again – by a voice so very similar to that which he'd barely escaped a few minutes ago.
"Sokka?" the soft, innocent, elegant voice that gave him nightmares enough to drive a man suicidal.
He gulped. If it followed him all this way then there was no way he could avoid it. He just had to man up and face it – if he could.
He turned around slowly, a look of anxiety and fear plastered on his handsome face. As his eyes caught a familiar dark-skinned cheek, he closed them. He was too scared. If it was her, then he'd definitely be labelled as crazy. How could he be seeing dead people?
"Sokka!" the voice suddenly became aggressive, shocking his eyes open. He sky blue eyes met with deep blue ones and he let out a long breath of relief. It wasn't her.
"Yeah?" he replied as his panic-stricken demeanor dissolved.
Katara frowned at him, her hands on her waist and her jacket hanging freely over her slender shoulders. "What's the matter with you? I've been screaming your name for the past ten minutes and you just ran from me!"
He blinked. He zoned out again. How could he mistake his sister's annoying voice for that elegant, innocent one? His sister wasn't elegant nor innocent. She was ratchet and dirty minded.
He shook his head as a wrong attempt to apologize. "Hey, I didn't know you were calling me!" he defended.
Katara rolled her eyes, dropping her arms. There was no point in arguing with her brother. They'd both be going on and on and then no one would get anything done.
"Whatever! Do you which way Aang went?" she asked looking around as if she'd spot him if she searched hard enough.
"Aang?" Sokka searched his memory then almost immediately he smiled and then frowned. "Oh yeah, that kid that's friends with…Toph." He said with slight annoyance.
Katara nodded. "Yeah, I was giving him a tour and then-" she sighed. "He walked out on me. Have any idea where he might be?"
Sokka eyed her suspiciously. "No, but he did say something mean about you. Something about you being judgy."
Her eyes widened. "He did? Now I really have to apologize." She said frantically searching the hallways.
Sokka stopped her. "Relax sis. You hardly know him. What does it matter if you offended him once? You probably never have to see him – or his proud friend – again. I also think they're in a lower grade than us, so, sayonara little bitches!" he waved his hand nonchalantly, a smug smile on his previously terrified features.
Katara played with her fingers nervously. "I might've just offended him a little bit more than you think." She looked away shamefully.
Sokka raised a brow. "How so?"
"Um," she bit her cheek then took in a long breath. "Let's just say I misjudged him…a little. He's an Air Nomad and—
Sokka gasped, his mouth and eyes widened in surprise. He shivered and immediately started ransacking his backpack for sanitizers. "An Air Nomad?! Spirits, did I touch him?!" he panicked.
Katara smacked the bottle out of his hands. "Sokka! That's not nice."
He picked up the bottle after shooting her an accusatory glance. "Oh come on, Katara. You know Air Nomads carry those…diseases!" he said the last part with disgust.
"No they don't!" Sokka eyed her knowingly then she dropped the act. "Well not all of them. Aang isn't sick."
"That's why he's mad at you. You accused him of having that virus." Sokka blamed her.
She nodded shamefully. "Yeah. He probably hates my guts." She mumbled.
Sokka snickered. "Huh, sucks to be you." Then he placed a finger on his chin speculatively. "But why would the Fire Nation accept an Air Nomad student? Why would an Air Nomad want to even go to the Fire Nation? Those two countries hate each other."
Katara rolled her eyes. "I told you. Aang isn't sick and he didn't seem to mind that he was in the Fire Nation." She sighed despondently. "I need to apologize to him."
Sokka stretched indifferently. "Yeah well, you do that. But don't touch him, just incase."
She shook her head. "You can't tell me what to do, Sokka."
He groaned at her stubbornness. "Whatever but if I find out you did, I'm telling dad and I'm locking you out of the house." He picked up his bag, mumbling as he walked away, "You're not giving me some freaky Air Nomad virus."
She stuck out her tongue at him. "You are so dumb Sokka." She held him back. "Wait! You didn't tell me where he went."
He waved his hands dismissively. "I don't know. He left the gym with Toph a while ago. I'm going to class."
She sighed. There was no way she'd find him now. He could be anywhere in this stupidly large school. Since it was time for classes, as notified by the bell, he might even be in class by now. Maybe Sokka was right. Since she only offended him once and might never see him again, there wasn't any point in stressing over this. If she ever did see him, she say a quick apology. If she didn't, so be it.
"Zuzu? Is that you?"
"OMG! Zuko, you look terrible!"
Zuko looked up from the desk he was resting his head on. His droopy eyes landed on his sister, a sly smile on her flawless face, and her friend, Ty Lee with her usual bubbly personality choking up the place.
"What do you want Azula?" he grumbled, relaxing into his seat.
She raised a brow in a false show of innocence. "Oh? Can't I visit my brother in his classroom once in a while?"
"First, school just started. Second, no you can't, not if you aren't gaining anything from it."
She dropped her arms and sat on the chair behind her. "You're right. I'm actually here to tell you the good news."
Zuko frowned. "Coming from you, I don't think it might be good news."
She placed a hand on her chest dramatically as of she'd be stabbed. "But it is. It's good news for both of us actually."
"Well?"
She smirked. "We're classmates now brother. Even better than that, I'm head girl."
Zuko's good eye widened. "You're head girl?"
She played with her perfectly cured nails. "As I should've have been a long time ago." She then turned to him. "I'm so excited for the brother-sister time we'll be spending together here. Aren't you, Zuzu?"
Before he could reply, the class fell silent and they turned to see who stood at the door.
It was a boy with brown hair, pale skin and grey eyes who looked similar to Ty Lee's. He flashed a toothy grin and Azula gasped at the resemblance he had with her friend. Those soft grey eyes of Ty Lee's were striking in his. Her cute feminine features were masculine in his. They could be twins.
"Uh, hi, I'm Aang."
