The incursion of the ISB on the BlasTech manufacturing facility happened three days ago. In its wake, security levels remain unusually high with the security forces still on edge, and outside people's eyesight is the ISB carefully monitoring the streets from behind their screens at the military base on the outskirts of Vaulent Capital. She knows they're still watching, silently as possible.
A roaming spy is a lottery ticket for any Imperial servant.
Just like the security forces, Eva is on edge too. Not because of the dangerous spy on the streets, but because of the emptiness. The Stormtrooper dream that is now gone still doesn't have a replacement. She feels empty, sad, and aimless. She has nothing to think of in the future, and that bugs her.
Eva switches from class to class. In the other one is taught mathematics, in the other geography. Today she has to present her research report about the Vira Mountain Range in front of the class. Presenting in front of the class wasn't always a problem, but now it's different. Eva feels the nervousness build up.
The teacher puts a small metal box on his desk containing paper slips with the names of the students. The name the teacher grabs out of the box has to present. After waiting nervously through the presentations of others, her name is spoken. Oliva sitting on the desk next to her gives her a thumbs up. Eva stands up and walks to the front of the class. She looks nervously at the classroom and sees all eyes are on her, and her nervousness becomes stronger.
Eva starts to talk about the mountain range, but she stops in the middle of sentences, stutters from time to time, and sometimes has to correct herself. During the entire presentation, she sweats and her hands shake a little. At the end of class, she walks quickly through the school's corridor, trying to forget her bad presentation.
''Eva, wait for me,'' says Oliva as she tries to catch up.
Eva keeps walking on. As she exits the building and walks onto the schoolyard, feeling the sun heating up her grey school uniform, Oliva finally catches up.
''Eva, is there something?'' she asks.
Eva stops in her track and looks at Oliva, and then lets out a sigh.
''I was at the BlasTech facility 3 days ago,'' says Eva, and she then tells Oliva about the Imperial incursion, the spy, and its aftermath.
''I feel sorry for what happened,'' says Oliva. Eva hears she can feel her pain.
Eva takes a deep breath as the incursion still makes her anxious, feeling the nervousness build up when she thinks back to the moment she was held at gunsight. It still makes her heart accelerate in her chest.
''Because of that I don't really want to become a Stormtrooper, but I don't know what to do now,'' says Eva. ''I knew what to do, but now I don't. I thought I could find something new.''
She remembers what Eline told her at the tree house, listen to your heart.
''I guess it needs time,'' responds Oliva.
Eva nods a little. Some things need more time to develop, and she understands that it could be the case with her. Just give it time.
''I can help you,'' says Oliva.
''Are you sure?''
''Sure I can, we're friends remember?''
Eva nods again. The solidarity of her friend makes her feel a bit better as if the sun had become a bit brighter.
''Want to come to my house?'' asks Eva with a smile. ''I think I'll have to redo my geology presentation.''
Oliva chuckles. ''Sure,'' she responds. ''CK-3 is picking me up from school, come take a ride.''
''Where is he?'' asks Eva as she follows Oliva, walking out of the schoolyard onto the road.
''On Overbrook Road, not far from here,'' responds Oliva.
They walk through a windy street. The mid-rise buildings flanking the narrow street are perfect to create these rough winds. When it's storming it's even tougher. The wind whistles as it blows through the streets. Above the whistling sound of the wind, Eva hears something behind her. It's too faint to be recognized, and Eva walks on behind Oliva. Then the sound becomes louder, so Eva turns around to see where this sound comes from. It comes from the rooftops of one of the mid-rise buildings along a road far away. She hears the sound changing in pitch, and as the sound becomes louder and louder, she starts to recognise it and her heart sinks in her chest.
Eva hears Oliva gasping for air as the realisation hits both of them.
''That's the air raid siren,'' says Oliva shocked and she grasps Eva's hand and pulls her away.
Eva turns around and they run through the narrow street. She doesn't fully realize the current situation, and the wailing sirens don't allow her to. The high-pitched sound of the air raid sirens is deafening. It pierces through skin and bone, and it hurts Eva's ears.
They run past other people, hurrying to a shelter, some with crying children. Eva then makes eye contact with one of them, and she starts to realise how troublesome this situation is. Eva never experienced the air raid sirens go off, but as she sees the reactions of others, she fully realises the situation, and she starts to fear for the worst. Her heart starts to pound heavily in her chest as she runs.
They run around the corner of a building after which they end up on the wide Overbrook Road. All of its lanes are clogged by abandoned speeders as their occupants stepped out and ran to nearby shelters.
Then, as Eva runs over the sidewalk, she moves her head a bit sideways to look at the sky and her eyes fall upon a turbo cannon on a governmental instance across the road, and she sees it is rotating and rising its barrel slowly into the sky.
''C, power up the engine,'' cries Oliva.
Amidst the chaotically parked, empty speeders is the grey, bulky speeder of Oliva with her cargo droid already stepping into the open cabin. They step in as they arrive, and Eva sits in the passenger seat tightly as the open cabin only seats two persons. Eva puts her schoolbag on her lap to sit more comfortably and she then feels the engine powering up, vibrating the metal door. Her eyes land on the turbo cannon again and it is still rotating into position and Eva starts to realize that something really bad is going to happen in 10 seconds.
Then the speeder drives away and CK-3 makes a U-turn on the road while dodging abandoned speeders. As the cargo droid finishes the U-turn, Eva turns her shoulder uncomfortably to look at the turbo cannon, and she sees it has finished rotating.
Then as they drive away, Eva startles and her ears hurt as the turbo cannon on the governmental building opens fire. The blast is deafening as she feels the soundwaves shock the speeder. She tries to see what the turbo cannon is shooting at, but her sight is blocked by various buildings.
''Eva,'' cries Oliva and she pulls Eva out of her focus, and she turns her shoulder back to look at Oliva.
''What?'' asks Eva.
''We-, we go to my house,'' Oliva stammers, her voice trembling. ''There's a shelter below our apartment.''
''Yeah, right,'' says Eva.
Then, she hears a loud bang far away behind her. She turns around on her cramped seat and sees the turbo cannon, now more than 100 meters away from them, engulfed in flames, with the upper cannon part flying into the sky and crashing onto the road. Metal parts crash onto the road and a high flame spewing out of the base on which the turbo cannon previously stood. The flame creates an awful loud screech, and Eva realizes the ammunition storage has blown up.
Then she sees an X-Wing shrieking through the sky with its loud engines overcoming the sound of the air raid siren. Tracking it with her eyes, Eva sees it accelerating through the sky and tilting nearly 90 degrees sideways as it makes a tight turn, nearly hitting the edge of a tower as it turns around it. Her heart starts to pound when she realizes it's a Rebel air raid.
''It's the Rebels,'' says Eva, horrified and turns her head to Oliva, her hands trembling and she sees the fear in her eyes.
Then Eva hears another explosion, and she turns around and sees an apartment building in smoke and fire, and debris raining down onto the road.
''They're-, they're attacking Vaulent,'' Oliva stammers. ''C, go faster.''
The cargo droid nods and pushes the accelerator throttle to the max, and Eva feels herself being pushed into her tight seat as the speeder speeds up. Meanwhile, the firing turbo cannons all over the city overshadow the wailing air raid siren, and the shrieking X-Wings and TIE Fighters makes Eva's heart pound relentlessly in her chest. The explosions, the screams of citizens seeking cover, the blasts. All of them make Eva think back to the day at the BlasTech facility.
The fear that made her drop to her knees and throw away her Stormtrooper dream is back but now even more intensified. Her hands tremble and her heart pounds heavily in her chest. Then her attention falls upon a tower in the far distance that overtops the surrounding mid-rise buildings, and it's covered in flames. The Rebel Alliance isn't just attacking.
''They're bombing the city,'' says Eva anxiously, her voice shivering. ''Oliva, we have to get out of the city.''
''Why?'' Oliva stammers.
''They're targeting the city, not the-,'' Eva is interrupted by a loud explosion somewhere nearby, and she feels the shockwave going through the speeder cabin.
''The city is the target, not the farmlands.''
''The shelter of our building can withstand their bombs.''
''One hit of a Y-Wing, or a crashing X-Wing can tear apart the gas pipes and make the building collapse. Outside the Vaulent Capital, we're safer, there's nothing out there. Go to my house.''
''Fine.''
''C, go to Plainfields 87.''
The cargo droid nods. They cross an intersection that goes straight towards the highway. As they drive, Eva sees a building next to the road completely collapsed in a mountain of debris with a couple of exposed gas pipes spewing out high flames. Eva takes a look back and sees giant smoke clouds rising into the air with TIE Fighters dogfighting Rebel starfighters everywhere in the sky. The view of the city in smoke horrifies Eva and her hands tremble, feeling her heart pound in her chest.
They enter the highway, almost completely empty with some abandoned speeders here and there. After what seemed an eternity, they exit the highway and drive over a paved road behind another speeder. Eva recognizes it immediately as the road she drives over with the bus towards school.
''Eva, look,'' says Oliva, and she points out.
Eva sees what she's pointing at. A large cloud of black smoke is rising far away, and something in the back of her head says it's coming from her house, and she knows that her mother and Eline are there. She starts to imagine her house collapsed, engulfed in flames, and her mother and Eline nowhere to be found. Her heart starts to pound and her hands shake as she imagines that, but she shakes her head and stops her mind from imagining it.
Then as they drive at high speed over the paved, empty road, Eva sees the bus stop and the dirt road that goes towards her house in the distance. They're almost there. Then as they cross an intersection, the speeder in front of them collides with another speeder from the left. Eva sees how one of the speeders rolls over 3 times until it comes to a halt in the bushes.
''C, stop,'' says Oliva shocked, and CK-3 steps on the brakes. ''Eva-,''
''It's fine, I'll run the last part.''
Eva jumps out of the speeder as it comes to a stop and runs over the asphalt road onto the dirt road. She feels the cold breeze as she runs over the dirt through the fields. Finally, Eva arrives at her house. To her relief, her house isn't on fire. Her imagination was wrong. Letting out a big sigh, she runs up the porch and pounds on the door, but nobody is opening it.
''Mom,'' yells Eva.
Still no answer. She pounds on the door and her hands start to burn, but still no answer. Then her surrounding becomes darker. She looks away and sees the large smoke cloud that made her mind imagine that her house was on fire is now so large that it blocks the sun, casting an immense shadow over the surface. Eva starts to wonder where it comes from. Why is this smoke cloud so huge that it even blocks out the sun?
Eva steps off the porch and runs in the direction of where the smoke cloud is rising from. She runs over a narrow dirt path that goes through the farmland. The crops around it are low enough to look over them with ease. She sees a couple of grey starfighters chased by some TIE-Fighters flying in the far distance as she can hear their engines roaring in the sky. As she keeps on running, her eyes tracking the starfighters, she sees one suddenly diving from the air towards the ground and dropping a bright dot. It then quickly takes off and rapidly climbs into the air, speeding away. It seems like they're bombing something.
Then, she's stopped by a wooden fence that borders the farmland with behind that a cliff that goes 10 meters down. Further away she sees high fences and watch towers, and behind those, the large smoke cloud rising from a large facility with B-Wings bombing it. She then recognizes parts of this facility, and then she's hit with a shocking realisation.
It's the BlasTech facility. The facility she visited with her father just days ago, and today it's a workday, and he is still there, working in a building targeted by the Rebel Alliance and now bombed by B-Wings. Eva starts to feel her heart pound as if it was in her throat. Her mind now starts to imagine her father hiding in a storage room while the floor shakes of Rebel bombs impact the facility. The imagination of her father hiding in fear and the sight of the BlasTech facility in smoke makes her hands tremble and her lungs gasp for air.
Then she's pulled out of her thoughts as she hears her name being called. She turns around, looks over the low crops and sees her mother in the distance on the porch of the house waving at her. She sighs out of relief and her heart slows down with pounding. Mother is alive and well and she assumes Eline is fine too. She starts to run over the narrow dirt path back to her house, feeling a wave of relief washing over her.
As she runs, she then hears something behind her, and it's a sound she recognizes from Vaulent Capital. She stops in her tracks and turns around to look at the smoke cloud. Her eyes then fall upon a B-Wing flying in her direction with a TIE-Fighter chasing it, both their engines roaring as they fly erratically. The TIE hits one of the wings, taking the B-Wing down and forcing it to descend rapidly. Eva's heart starts to sink as she sees the B-Wing flying down towards her with its wings in flames, and it's coming straight towards her.
''Eva, come here!'' cries her mother.
Eva's heart pounds as she turns around and runs through the dirt path as fast as she can. She looks over her shoulder and sees the B-Wing still flying down towards her, the flames starting to engulf the engines at the back. Eva tries to run faster but her endurance is drained and her adrenaline can't keep up. She looks back again and sees the B-Wing closing in and crashing into the farm field behind her, but it races towards her and doesn't stop. Eva sees the B-Wing suddenly go airborne and impact the ground again after half a second of air time, rolling over its longitudinal axis towards her, crushing everything on its path.
Eva looks back towards her house and sees she won't make it. It's still too far and the B-Wing is coming in closer and closer. Her heart races as she realizes she can't get back to her house, as the B-Wing would likely crush her before she could make it there. She has to go off trail.
So, Eva runs off the dirt path and races through the crops. She sees the large fin of the B-Wing rolling towards her with immense speed, but it barely misses her. The movement of the fin pushes Eva to the ground, and she falls onto the dirt. Eva stands quickly up to see where the B-Wing is going to stop, but to her horror, it doesn't, and it keeps rolling towards her house at great speeds. She sees her mother running into the house and she barely hears her mother call Eline's name over the B-Wing's roaring engines.
Then the B-Wing crashes into the house. Eva is horrified, gasping for air, her hands trembling, as the B-Wing relentlessly charges through the walls and slides through the entire house and causing it to collapse. The roof falls down, the walls snap like branches, and pipes burst. The house turns into a massive pile of debris as the B-Wing charges through the last wall and comes to a stop further away, its entire hull completely engulfed in flames. But her eyes are still focused on the collapsed house. Mom and Eline are still there, thinks Eva. No, it can't be true.
Eva pushes herself up from the ground and runs out of the field to the collapsed house. She gets anxious as she sees the pile of debris from up close. Where once stood her house is now standing nothing but rubble.
''Mom,'' cries Eva as she climbs up the debris.
She climbs over concrete pieces and steel cables, feeling her feet nearly slip as she relentlessly searches for her mother and Eline. Feeling her heart pounding in her chest, Eva keeps looking, and the hope of finding her mother and Eline well and alive vanishes as she rolls pieces of debris off the massive pile, looking through gaps and crying for their names. Then she finds something that absolutely horrifies her, and her heart sinks
