Chapter 15: For a little while
After the music festival things between he and Bonnie had gotten so much better. It was like all that space and all that distance between the two of them evaporated leaving just the two of them, in the Damon and Bonnie bubble.
And he loved every moment of it.
This thing with Bonnie was something that was organic, something pure and he had never had that with anyone, let alone a woman. They gravitated toward each other, even when they didn't necessary want to be near each other. It went as far back as when she was the only other person he ever wanted to work with. He hadn't realized it then, but they were inching toward each other...circling each other.
Throughout the years he had become more invested in her and she in him. The other side had changed everything. With just the two they become entwined, and what they had, it blossomed naturally. He could honestly say that he would do anything for her, and that was why he was going to go talk to the big bad hybrid.
Enzo was next on his list.
He had everything all planned out. After the music festival he mapped out his plan and made almost everything come true. The first thing he did was buy the rental house he and Bonnie shared. He had put the deed in her name, in case any vampire tried to get in that was unwelcome. That was the only way he could feel okay with leaving her to seek out Enzo and finish out his plans.

Bonnie
I was a ball of nerves, on pins and needles as the clock kept ticking. I don't know what was making me more nervous, the fact that Damon and Vincent were going to meet Enzo in Raleigh or the fact that tonight was suppose to be my date night with Klaus, like at my house.
The one person I always called when it came to dating had been Caroline and lucky for me, my girl picked up as soon as possible.
"Where's the fire?" Caroline asked once taking one look at my distress face.
I let out a sigh. "I'm the fire." I moaned. "I have a date and you know me and now I'm freaking the fuck out!"
Caroline doesn't even try to hide the smile from her face.
"Caroline!" I whine. "This is a big deal!"
"Oh yeah!" She asks cornflower blue eyes sparkling.
"Yeah. And it's here at our place and I don't know what to wear!" I say all in one breath, as Caroline stifles a giggle.
"Well hello to you too Bon." She chuckles. "You really like this Nick guy don't you?" She asks causing me to fidget.
I nibble on my bottom lip. "I don't dislike him." I say finally.
"Damon must be shitting bricks." Caroline beams!
I roll my eyes because she's enjoying this way too much. "He's not thrilled about it, but he's got his thing with Elena."
Caroline blows a giant bubble and then lets it pop. "His relationship with Elena is in name only and we both know that."
We share a look and then Caroline finally relents. "It's good to see you like this Bon, you like this guy, like really like him." Caroline beams. "You weren't like this with any other guy you've been with, not with stalking Enzo or whimpering Jeremy.
A frown forms on my lips. "Thanks, I guess."
"Tell me about him, obviously he's got good taste, and must be some kind of hot to have you running around like a chicken with it's head off."
"I'm not running around." I deadpan.
"Yet."
I ignore her comment and the glee she's displaying. "It's just, ya know, I was all for us being purely physical and then we went out on one date and now he's invited himself over to my house and I literally stood and looked at him like cool."
Caroline gives me a look. "I think you're sprung."
I can feel my eyes go wide at her words. Immediately I stand up."I think, I need wine." I say causing Caroline to sing song Bonnies sprung, Bonnies sprung.

Vincent
Being regent Vincent has spent the last couple of days preparing just about everyone who worked with him for his trip. Gloria would take his place while he was gone which would only be a few days. She was more than qualified for the job, in fact when the job came up he was ready to vote for her to be regent but Gloria had already voted for him and so had everyone else.
After speaking with her, he found his way over to Lucys house because, he was Vincent and she was Lucy.
"So I heard you were going out of town with Damon," Lucy says putting food in a container. "Should I be worried?" She asks playfully.
He shrugs but peaks as she adds more food to another container. It's all his favorites packed away. On top a note reads snacks for the road. "As worried as I should be about whatever is cooking between you and Elijah."
Lucy looks up and grins, though it doesn't reach her eyes. "If I tell you, I'll have to be transparent."
"Some transparency might be a good thing." He says folding his arms in front of his chest. 'How about you tell me why I had to hear about your situation from a third party?" He asks.
Silence is what she hits him with. If she knows he really doesn't know what's going on and is bluffing to get to the real truth, she has nothing. Instead the facade she's been putting on starts to slip.
A pot fall from the rack and immediately she jumps. Lucy is scared of nothing and know one so when a pot falling from the rack scares her, something is up.
"You're being extremely jumpy for someone that usually kicks down doors and resorts to violence at any given second."
She sends him a non to pleased look. "I think you've got me mixed up with your other best friend." She retorts quick witted as ever.
He knows Lucy though, she never was this jittery. Not even with all the caffeine she inhales via all the coffee she drinks. He hated the stuff but Lucy could drink coffee all day.
"You both have quick tempers that's for sure, but you–" He pauses to get a better look at her. She looks far paler than usual. And her eyes that always dance with mischief is a watered down version, which doesn't fit her at all.
"Luce," he says his voice softer. "What are you keeping from me, that's got you so haunted?" He asks, watching as her face goes stone cold. He knows that stubborn look, has been on the receiving end of her stubborn streak and can rival it. "Don't think about pulling b.s. on me." He reminds. "We're family."
She stiffens, then predictably rolls her eyes. "I got a rose." She finally confesses.
Swear words leave his mouth quick and fast. "Why am I just now hearing about this?"
She licks her lips. "I- didn't want to worry you." She admits. "You know I don't play the damsel role very well.
He reaches for her hand. "You're far from the damsel type of girl."

Damon
Pulling up to the estate he turns the engine off and scowls at the home. He was dreading this, dreading dealing with Klaus, but it had to be done. But first, he needed to call his brother, because that was how they rolled. They may fight, they may disagree, he may have been jealous of Stefan for a long time. But, at the end of the day they were brothers and they took care of each other.
The phone rang twice before Stefan finally picks up.
"You told me to call you back." He says into the phone. "To keep you updated so, here I am." He says nonchalant as possible.
Stefan sucks his teeth. "So, are you still going to see Enzo?"
"Yep." He says letting the p pop.
"Damon, listen I know you care about Bonnie–"
"Stefan–"
"No!" Stefan says adamant. "I know how you feel, you've made it painfully obvious where your heart lyes. I just want you to think about this. Think about all the progress you've made."
"Because of Bonnie!" He finally burst. "She's the reason, I'm so much better."
"I'm sure you're girlfriend would love to hear that." Stefan snaps.
"This isn't about Elena, it about Bonnie."
Silence ensues
"I know." Stefan says finally. "Just...please don't take it too far with Enzo. Don't let him bring you down." Stefan says pausing. "Because I need my brother and Bonnie needs her best friend."
He cracks a grin. "I've gotta go make nice with Klaus."
"Good luck with that."
"I don't need luck I've got Bonnie."
Hanging up the phone he looks at the compound again.
It was now or never.
The last place he wanted to go to had this place. He hated Klaus, despised Rebekah and only tolerated Elijah because he was smooth. Now though, he had to put all that aside to talk to king Klaus. The mere thought had him nearly gagging, but he stopped himself before he made a fool out of himself in front of everyone.
Upon arrival to the home, he hears noise in the back ground.
"Higher papa, higher!" A voice called.
Creepy. He was surprised that all guards and other family seemed to have gone missing. He wonders for a brief moment if maybe Klaus sent everyone away in a rage. Probably he had temper that flickered like a candle.
"Are you sure Hope?"
"Yes papa, higher."
He follows the voices to see Klaus Mikaelson jumping on a trampoline with what he presumes is his daughter. Everyone had heard that he had fathered a child but seeing that shit up and close was the most bizarre thing he had ever witnessed. Well aside from Bonnie and the hybrid flirting. That disgusting display at the meeting was still very much the star of his nightmares.
However, the star of his dreams had been he and Bonnie at the music festival. He got to hold her in his arms again, which was something he feared would happen every blue moon. They talked and laughed for hours and the smile, that smile she gave him warmed up his long dead heart.
Two pairs of blue eyes are on him when he rounds the corner. Klaus, has hopped off the trampoline and helps his daughter come down to join him.
"What are you doing here?" Klaus asks, in the most friendliest manner he's ever heard. He figures the hybrid doesn't want to give the girl nightmares.
He shifts from one foot to the other feeling uncomfortable. "It's about Bonnie." He says.
Soon as the words leave his mouth, Klaus is sporting freaky hybrid eyes. Lucky for him, the girl grabs hold of her fathers hand. "It's okay papa, Bonnie is in the garden, I can see her."
To his surprise and great astonishment little Mikaelson points and then a vision of Bonnie in the garden with a big sun hat appears. He realizes he's smiling when she starts to sing a song they had listened to continuously while trapped together. Even in a vision, she still looks beautiful. She's got dirt smudged on her cheek, while her yoga pants are clinging in all the right places and lets not even talk about the amount of buttery soft skin she's showing with her sports bra.
Not for the first time he realizes just how hot his best friend is. She might even rival him in the look departments and that is quite difficult.
Chancing a look to Klaus, he sees that the damn hybrid his a wicked grin on his lips. He was probably thinking of things he had no business thinking about. Whatever Bonnie shared with the hybrid was just a footnote in her story, he knew that when this chapter with Klaus was over that he would take his rightful place by her side.
"That's enough magic for you sweetie." Klaus says reaching out to grasp the hand of his daughter. Watching the scene creeps him out because this is Klaus.
"But papa!" Hope whines.
"No more magic little one." Klaus says bending down so that the two are eye level. They nuzzle noses and the vision soon fades.
"Okay, papa."
Klaus soon does a whistle that is by far the loudest whistle he has ever heard in his entire existence and soon enough people come out of hiding places on the compound. Shit is wild but that is to expected. He's expecting to get taken away, sprinkled in with a few threats that only Klaus would say, but to his avail instead of those things, out comes that Haley chick that screwed them over.
"What's going on here?" She asks a coming stand in front of them.
"Nothing for you to worry about." Klaus says before bending down to smile at mini Mikaelson. "Hope I need to talk to my friend Damon, you don't mind do you?"
Hopes face falls for a moment. "But papa,"
He watches as Klaus and Haley make eye contact before Haley speaks.
"How about this, we let daddy talk to his friend and while he's doing that– you and I will go to the bakery." Haley says conspiring.
Soon the little girl beams before agreeing, but not before launching herself onto her father and peppering him with kisses.
He watches on as the three say goodbye, Hope even waves at him and despite the fact that he hates her father and her mother he waves back.
Once baby Mikaelson and her mother were gone, Klaus turned to him with the usual threats.
"I should cut your tongue out for interrupting me and my daughter!" The hybrid says hotly.
He only rolls his ice blue eyes. Klaus could throw a tantrum all he wanted but they both knew he was untouchable. If Klaus had did anything to him Bonnie would roast they hybrid and then kick his invincible ass to the curb. Though going through a Mikaelson torture session was nothing to get excited about, provoking Klaus could work in his favor.
"But you won't, because of Bonnie." He taunts, knowing what buttons to push.
Klaus steps forward. "What she doesn't know wont hurt her." The hybrid says intent in every word he breathed.
Having enough of this back and forth he holds his hands up. He could provoke Klaus later, they had a bigger issue, he had a bigger issue to deal with. "Listen, I don't want any trouble."
Klaus snorts. "That's a first."
He looks out across the land, wondering where all guards were, surly they were watching him waiting for him to make one wrong move. Despite hating Klaus he knew that the man could protect Bonnie, if not by his invincibility but with his plethora of vampire and wolfs that followed him, and protected his family.
"I'm leaving." He says suddenly. The words cause a small shift in the face of the man he still hates with his all. A look of pure glee is etched on the face of Klaus Mikaelson and he wants nothing more to do than to ruin this moment for the hybrid. But he won't, for Bonnie.
Klaus does a full belly laugh, delight dancing across his face. "Well, that didn't take long." The hybrid says now grinning.
He's creeped out by seeing Klaus grin but lets him continue his spiel. Because Klaus doesn't know shit about him, and he surly doesn't know shit about he and Bonnie.
"I guess some of us," Klaus pauses to look over at him and wink. "Mainly, you bask in mediocrity."
Clenched fist he speaks. "Yet you dined on the scraps Caroline gave you." He says mentally patting himself on the back for that one. It never gets old bringing his failed attempt to get Caroline Forbes.
Klaus only chuckles again. "And you're going back to a stale Petrova lineage." The hybrid grins again. This time his eyes are amber. "Don't worry about our Bonnie." Klaus says confidently. "I'll take good care of her." Klaus says hands now in his pockets.
The thought of what Klaus really means to say has him seeing red, without warning he's launched himself onto the man, only for Klaus to slam him onto the ground and then put his foot on top of his chest, old school wrestling style.
"You're dismissed now, go back to your brothers left overs." Klaus says before flinging him up to his feet.
When the hybrid turns to leave he fixes his clothes that are now dirty. Just as he's about to go he remembers something. Klaus thinks he knows all about him, about Bonnie, about everything but he's wrong.
"You have it all wrong Klaus, I'm not leaving Bonnie to go back to Elena." He says finally his own smirk playing on his lips. "You see, me and Bon, we're two peas in a pod."
Eye roll. "So you say."
"I'm checking out a lead, a lead that will help B feels safe." He continues.
At the stony look Klaus sends his way, its obvious that Bonnie never shared her fears with the hybrid. It made sense, what Bonnie and Klaus had would only always be physical nothing more.
Grinning he continues. "But you never knew anything about that?" He chuckles feeling like he won this round.
Klaus only tightens his lips.
"I guess it shows you that," He licks his lips, tilts his head and all but does a jig."No matter how many times, she lets you inside- she'll never really let you inside."

Lucy
After finally getting the words out Lucy Bennett let out a content sigh. It felt good getting all that off her shoulders. Although she could lie with the best of them, Vincent was family and this was eating away at her. Bonnie was already in the dark, and although she wanted to tell her cousin what was going on, she knew that the less the youngest Bennett knew the better.
Sitting down on the sofa, Vincent hands her cup of tea, because the man loved tea and thought it solved just about everything. In this case, he was right. The golden milk he fixed for her, was warm at the top but once you got further down in the cup it was cold, just the way she liked it.
"You're not a damsel Lucy." Vincent says again, as if that could change the feeling she's feeling. Instead of telling him that- that was exactly what she felt like, she just sips her tea.
"You're my family," Vincent continues. "And family protects their own."
Right before her eyes he's pulling out his phone. She didn't want this information to leak out to the public. Nobody needed to know that she was sent a rose. "What are you doing?" she asks all but flying over to him.
He holds the phone away from her. "I'm calling Damon."
Furrowed brows she glares at him. "What no! I don't even like him! Let alone want him in my business."
He chuckles. "I was going to tell him I need to bail on our roadtrip."
Alarmed she stands. "You don't have to do that."
Now he stands. "Do you hear yourself, why would you not want me to stay here with you. We can figure this out maybe even listen to hear if anyone else has got a rose and present that to Klaus." He says already thinking about what they needed to do going forward.
The doorbell soon rings and when she opens it Elijah is standing on the other side looking sharper then he had in quite a while. "Because Elijah has already volunteered to spend his free time with me."
Vincent has his hand on his hip now. "Really Luce, you get a black rose from one of those creeps and you're still trying to get some dick? Where are your priorities?"
She tilts her head and sends him a withering look. "Apparently with my vagina, smart ass."
That earns a chuckle.
They share a look and kind of grin at each other because, at least they could still keep it real. Poor Elijah steps over the threshold and looks out of place.
"And first of all, I could've had Mikaelson dick the first night baby." She says tossing a look in the direction of Elijah who only tries to hide a grin. Secondly, you were happy about this road trip with your best buddie."
"Lucy."
She holds her hand up. "Thirdly, you need this road trip. You take care of everyone else," Pause. she moves closer to him. "It's time you go and have fun, get laid and be a little reckless."
He opens his mouth only for Lucy to put her two fingers over his lips.
"I promise I'll be here when you get back."
It takes only seconds before he relents. "But if you die, I'm bringing you back just to talk shit."
They share another grin. "Deal, and if you do by any chance have fun, I get shoes as my prize for letting your travel with that vile friend of yours."
"Deal."

Bonnie
Hours later
The outfit I decided to wear for the night was a cobalt blue pant romper that was long sleeved and fell off the shoulders. My hair was wavy thanks to the braids I had been sporting. The house had been cleaned and scented with my favorite candles. And dinner was something I had seen on a cooking show. I had thought it might be a good idea, to make pizza and by that I meant, we were going to make our own dough with the aide of Greek yogurt.
Everything is set, everything is ready the only person who seems to be missing is the one person who wanted this to happen so bad. Nervously I fluff the pillows that are decorating our couch, my bangles clinking together with each move. The light catches the rose gold bangles that have the letter B incrusted in diamonds. The bracelet had been a welcome back from the dead gift Damon had given me, years ago. When he first gave me the bracelet I thought he was losing his mind, but much like Damon, it had become a fixture in my life.
Nibbling on my bottom lip, I have half the nerve to call him. Damon and Vincent had left earlier today for North Carolina in hopes of talking to Lorenzo. I had hoped that they could chat over the phone but Damon seemed to think it was imperative to talk to Enzo in person. I had only hoped that he wasn't as hostile as before.
I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach whenever I thought of my ex, and I couldn't shake it.
It rattled my nerves to think that Damon and Vincent could walk into a situation that they weren't prepared for, but the guys seemed to think they knew how to handle everything so, I was going to leave up to them, and say a prayer every time I thought of them.
Flashback
I sat on the bed Cuddles in my lap watching as he stuffed clothes into a duffle back. "You're packing an awful lot of clothes, I thought you were just going to be gone for two days tops." I call causing Damon to turn around and look at me.
"You never know, what mess I'll get into so, I'd rather over pack then have not enough of clothes." He says with a wink. "Plus, I hate getting dirty the moment something drops on me I'll lose my shit."
I lick my lips and shake my head. "This is serious Damon! Enzo can get a little crazy and if anything were happen to you, or to Vincent..."
My words don't get a chance to finish because soon Damon had plopped down beside me. It makes sense, it is his bed.
"I promise you, I'll come back for you–" He pauses and looks down. "I'll always come back for you Bon."
It's then that our eyes catch and I see the sincerity in his words. I believe him.
"Pinky swear." I say holding out my pinky. Damon looks at my finger for about ten seconds before hooking our fingers together.
He smirks. "Pinky swear."
"Ok." I say simply as he pulls me close to him. One arm is wrapped around my shoulders while we sit silently in bed.
"I talked to the ever brooding Stefan Salvatore." Damon says conversationally. "We've been talking a lot lately actually.
I look over to him and he shrugs. This was news. Since everything that went down between Stefan and I, Damon had barely mentioned him. But then again, the relationship between the Salvatore brothers was a fractured mess and teetered in one direction or the other based on mood and circumstances. I did believe they had love for each other, just in a fucked up kind of way.
"And?"
He shifts in the bed bringing me with him. His fingers twirl my hair in his hands, while his other had massages my scalp. That was a sure way to calm me down. "He wanted to know if I were coming home for Elena?" Pause.
"What did you tell him." I ask trying to move but finding it difficult, especially since a clingy vampire was holding me as if he could never let go.
"I told him no, that maybe she was better off in his arms."
I swallow hard because this is going somewhere I didn't expect it to go, especially now. We had just gotten over the mountain that was our big argument. We were working on our friendship, dedicated to being the best we could be. As long as we set boundaries in our relationship we could be Bonnie and Damon, but better.
"Why? Elena is all you ever wanted?" I ask sitting up to get a good look at him.
Damon sits up as well. "Because she's not all I want anymore."
"Damon..." My words are meant to stop him and whatever this is.
Currently I was seeing Klaus and despite all the reasons to run away from him, I liked him. I could admit that now. Even though we were no strings, I enjoyed spending time with him.
He lifts my chin up as our eyes meet. So many times I had found myself almost hypnotized by those glacier eyes, eyes that were insanely beautiful in the sun, or when he wore certain colors.
"We both know it's true...everyone knows it's true." He reaches for my hand and links our hands together.
His cell phone rang, and within seconds we were walking to the door, where Vincent was waiting.
"You guys, promise me, you'll be safe, you'll take care of each other." I say getting misty.
After everything I had gone through, I had developed a thing about people leaving. I knew though, that together Damon and Vincent were the perfect duo. Damon was an old ass vampire, way older than Enzo. And Vincent was the most critically acclaimed warlock I had met. Together they could probably do a whole lot of good in the world.
I watch as the guys get in the car, but not before Damon comes back to the porch. He's got his hands on either side of my cheeks, and he's looking into my eyes with familiar oceanic blue eyes, but it's not the same as the sky blue eyes that flashed with amber.
"I'm coming back for you Bon, remember that."
When he kisses my forehead he lingers for bit longer before going back to the car.
I watch as the two of them drive off till I can't see the car any longer.
End flashback
I'm brought out of my thoughts by the sound of the door bell ringing. Shaking off the sudden butterflies that had been popping up an awful lot, I took a deep breath. When the deep breath doesn't work, I opt for wine. Instantly I pick up my wine glass, draining the remaining contents before opening the door.
It's then that I see him, dressed in his normal Klaus getup of a charcoal henley, and dark jeans. It looks as if in the days we hadn't seen each other, Klaus had gotten a haircut where the sides have gotten much shorter leaving the top curly.
"Do you plan on checking me out further, or shall I pose for you?" Comes his accented voice, as he cracks himself up.
I cross my arms over my chest and lean against the door. "I don't know are you worth it?" I ask biting back a grin of my own.
Klaus shrugs, as his eyes flash with amber. "I don't know, let me in and I'll show you– first with my tongue."
I nearly choke on my own tongue and he grinning again. The bluntness of his words, the way they made me feel was so unexpected, and yet expected.
"Come in." I say giving him access to the newly minted house that Damon had bought and put in my name.
Klaus takes two steps in, gives me a lustful look and then looks around the house.
"These are for you." He says handing me flowers that looked like they were freshly picked. "Hope and I picked them from the garden today, and I thought you might like some."
I look down at the white roses. "I love them." I say placing the flowers into a vase.
It had been a couple of days since the cookout at festival and in that time, I had spent much of my time decorating the house so that it felt more like mine. It was the only thing I could do, especially since, the dreams had been keeping me up.
"Good." Klaus says his eyes fixed on me. "You've got me all alone, what do you plan on doing to me."
"You'll see."
He grins showing twin dimples showing. "Should I be afraid."
"Very." I say glancing over my shoulder at him.
He rubs his hands together. "It looks like my kind of night then."

Klaus
He had watched with amusement as she had gone in search of a the perfect vase. Looking around the living space, he could see that this was all Bonnie. It looked like something she would like, it felt warm and cozy, something that had lacked in the Salvatore home, and most of his homes, till Hope.
The walls were painted a lovely shade of blue that reminded him sapphires. Two huge couches in a creme color were stationed around the living room, with accented pillows in the colors of grey and a warm mustard turmeric color. The rest of the living space was accented with end tables, lights and a brick fireplace with white brick encasing it. Pops of green also popped up as Bonnie seemed to have an affinity for decorative plants.
He continues to look around till his eyes fall on a black and white portrait of Bonnie smiling while that sniveling Salvatore kissed her cheek. From the banner in the background he can tell that this was during the recent outing, she and Salvatore had at the festival. Glaring at the portrait, he's seconds away from tossing it into the fireplace, as an accident of course, when she wanders back in, beaming at the flowers and vase.
"This will go perfect on the island." She says turning round to look at him. She sends him a look.
"What are you up to?"
"Would you believe nothing."
"No."
"Good girl." He grins. "So what's on the menu tonight?" He asks watching as she wiggles her finger at him.
Leaning against the counter to brings out two aprons. "I was thinking a pizza making contest."
"You do realize that I've got a thousand years over you." He says looking over at her amused.
"Yep."
"And if memory suits me, you don't cook?" He reminds getting closer.
"Um hm." She says her breath hitching as he snakes his arm around her waist.
"And you want to challenge me?' He asks, his face getting closer to hers.
Her arms are resting on his neck, and all he can think is how easy this is. "Of course." She says her pretty mouth turning up into a grin
Oh how he adored that mouth. It has been days since he had been in the same room with her and even now it wasn't enough.
"Well then," he says mouth nearly touching hers. "Let the games begin love, and just so you know, I win everything and I play dirty."
Her eyes are alight with mischief, something he has only seen here. "Well play on, and just so you know, I can play dirty too."
And with that she slants her mouth of his, igniting a hunger that would never be sated.
