Chapter Two: Birth of a Hero Part Two: Truth
(The Marvelous Devil)
"SPARDA!" The beast roared as it slammed its tail into the wall collapsing the side of it, Ragna jumping back and avoiding any falling debris and to get some distance from the monster. He had no idea what the hell it was, but it definitely was not a gator!
"Did someone drop you in toxic waste, or were you just born that ugly?" Ragna asked, wondering why he was trying to crack a joke. It was no doubt his confidence trying to keep his fear under control, but seeing this thing really didn't help. The beast snorted in annoyance, pushing its broad shoulders through the side of the buildings with ease, taking slow steps towards him.
And then the unexpected happened.
"...Yes, it is you." Ragna's eyes widened in shock as the creature's deep guttural voice growled out, eyes narrowed down at the raven hair teen.
"You look nothing like your father….but I smell the blood of that traitorous bastard!" It roared, slamming its fist into the wall, creating an even bigger hole, the building shaking not able to hold it for long as people screamed inside. Ragna was greatly confused, his father? How and why did this thing know about his dad? What was his dad, some kind of monster hunter? That'd be actually kind of cool.
"L-Listen Zilla, I think you got the wrong guy, so I'll just be on my wa-!" Ragna tried to take a step back, but the creature lunged with claws that could tear through tanks with ease. With speed he never thought he had but would be thankful for later, Ragna jumped back at the last second with his shirt and front of his jeans being ripped.
"I've dreamed of this moment, I shall be the one to end the Bloodline, just like they did with your whore MOTHER!" It roared, digging its claws into the other wall.
"My….Mother?" Ragna asked, now wondering how this thing even knew his mother? Wait a minute….did he just call his mother a whore?!
"Oh you bit-!"
"Now! Now I end you, Son of Sparda!" The beast roared as it lunged at Ragna, who immediately kicked into flight instead of fight. He may defend his girls from bullies, but he just watched this thing kill a full grown man with one arm, it was not to be trifled with. The growing group of bystanders had heard a man screaming, phones out wondering what had happened in the growing dark alley. They heard the bestial roar and before they knew it a raven hair teen lunged out with torn clothes….followed by a large draconic like creature.
Screams filled the streets as the two buildings could no longer hold and began to collapse onto the street below, but that did little to stop the beast as it tore through stone and flesh to chase its target. Ragna panted and gasped as he pushed people aside and leapt over everyone as the beast chased him, blood splattering behind him as it gored through everyone with its immense body. Once many cleared Ragna just kept on running, jumping over stopping cars and down the street. He didn't need to know what was happening behind him, seeing a car or two fly by, almost like it was right on top of him.
Ragna made a hard left onto the sidewalk, quickly looking for a place to hide from this beast as it roared behind him. His eyes lit up when he found the perfect hiding spot, running towards it just as the beast made the corner. It sniffed the air looking for Ragna, head snapping in the direction of something slamming shut, seeing some rectangle metal box on the sidewalk. It stomped towards the phone booth, gripping the roof and ripping off the booth, only to snort when it saw nothing underneath. Meanwhile, Ragna was holding his breath while trying to be very quiet, repeating the same words over and over again.
"Don't make a sound. Don't make a sound. Don't make a sou-!"
RING RING
The beast's head twisted down into the booth in its claws, staring back at Ragna who was planted both feet on one wall, eyes widened as the phone dangled in front of him.
"...It's for you." Ragna offered the phone. The beast roared as he hurled the phone booth, Ragna screaming as he spun around it. Knowing he had two options: Die a brutal death, or die a brutal death with the possibility he will survive. Taking a blind leap of faith, Ragna dove out of the booth, landing right into the hood of a car back first just as the booth crashed into a building. In hindsight he might have survived that but no time to dwell as the beast charged again like a raging bull. Ragna quickly pushed off the car and made a break for it, avoiding another car as the beast chased him.
Ragna didn't know where he was gonna go, but he just had to keep running, for his safety and everyone else's-especially Penny and the girls-and just get this thing away from large crowds. Maybe chase it to the police department so they could take it down with guns or whatever else police use. This was something WAY out of his jurisdiction, and not something anyone could handle, not even him as impressive as he liked to think he was.
"ENOUGH RUNNING!" The beast roared as it lifted both fists into the air and slammed them onto the road, multiple city blocks within the vicinity began shaking violently. The ground broke apart around them, and Ragna was not fast enough to get out of its way, staggering as it cracked beneath him. It was all the monster needed as it jumped off its hind legs and pulled its fist back, lunging at Ragna. The teen twisted his body and tried to crawl away but it was too late, and all he could do was lift his arms up to try and protect his chest. With the force of a bullet train, Ragna felt the ground cave in as the fist slammed into his body, breaking apart as they both fell below.
Many citizens of Redgrave began boarding the subway train to take them elsewhere, completely oblivious to the world above…..until it came crashing down with a BOOM. Debris and metal collapsed and crushed the train cart, men and women screaming in panic as something large ripped itself out of the metal, roaring with fury before rubble collapsed on top of its head. Many wondered what could've done this, unaware as the dust cleared that the rubble began moving again, and this time the beast lunged out grabbing a poor pedestrian between its teeth.
"No! Where are you?! Where are you, bastard?!" Ragna groaned, feeling pain spread across his body like he was hit by a train…...wait….No, now the pain began to disappear. He felt something hard and cold all around him, rock and metal perhaps, but seemed light all the sudden. Should he even be alive?! He felt like a punch from a beast like that should've killed him with ease considering how easy it broke stone and tossed cars like nothing. He pushed himself back up when he heard the beast snarling and calling out for him, or at least it kept calling him a bastard.
"NO~~~!" Ragna's eyes widened in shock and horror hearing a girl cry out. His body began pulling itself out of the wreckage in what appeared to be a destroyed train passenger car. He looked up to see the beast hovering over a girl, roaring and snorting with rage as it towered over her. Before his very eyes, it seemed as if the girl began to transform, taking the form of Penny to Gwen to finally Kyrie.
"I…...ed…pro…er." A voice barely echoed in his ears, blocked out by the beating pulse of his heart. Something deep within him began to pulse with untold power, burning and flickering with life, before it exploded throughout Ragna's entire being.
"RAH!" The beast turned at the last second only for a fist to slam into its cheek, knocking it square off its feet and into the wall. Ragna's body flared with a menacing red aura that flickered around him like a flame, quickly dispersing around his body, the raven hair teen feeling a dark and powerful feeling burn within him.
"GET OUTTA HERE!" Ragna roared to the girl not getting a good look of her as he felt something primal try to rip itself out of him. He heard her footsteps echoing behind him as the beast in front of him reached out and pulled him in its embrace.
"Did you think that would so easily stop me?!" It snarled, gesturing to the indent in its scales where Ragna punched it, which easily annoyed it as not even tanks could injure it. Ragna grunted as he tried to pry himself free of its claws, but whatever that energy was it suddenly dispersed from his body leaving him in the crushing iron grip.
"Heh…heh, now I shall favor this." The beast snarled as it hunched over, growling and snarling in pain. Ragna grunted and cried out as it began tightening its grip, eyes widened as wings sprouted from its back. With a single flap of its wings the beast took flight barely touching the ground, repeating the process before it finally flew out of the hole and past the rooftops, flying high into the sky.
"Let this be the day that I, Ancala, shall devour the Blood of Sparda and be the most powerful Lord of Hell!"
"W-WHAARRAAAAAHHHH!" Ragna's scream echoed across the sky as his bones popped and began cracking. The beast cackled as it crushed the raven hair teen, his screams music to its ears, putting more pressure in its hold, hearing several bones snap in two. Ragna screamed and coughed out a glob of blood painting the demons already red scales darker, feeling his arms break and ribs snap. He felt blood in his lungs, one possibly punctured by a rib he had no idea, but the world around him became….white…..the scenery began to change around him. His eyes slowly shut close a few times…..
"Ma….ma…."
"That's it, say Mama! Say Mama, Sweetie." …..When he opened his eyes again, Ragna could barely make out the face, his vision blurred but he could make out the shapes and colors. It was definitely a woman by the voice, her hair was blonde and she appeared to be wearing red and black.
"Ma…Ma….Mama!" A voice called out, wait, was that his? It sounded so young, like he was a toddler, he didn't remember this.
"Good job! Oh Mommy is so proud of you, my Little Morningstar." The woman cooed, picking him up and bringing him closer, feeling her lips on his nose, giggling in response. Morningstar? What was that? The woman chuckled as she swung him around, making him laugh before she kneeled down, holding him close, rubbing his cheek affectionately with her hand. His own reached up and took hold of something, soft and silky…it smelled like roses.
"Mommy loves you very much….Ragna."
…..Ba…..ump…..
"Now, I shall feast on your flesh, and end the line of Sparda!" The beast roared as it brought Ragna close to its opening maw.
….Ba-bump…
"...Hmmm?" The creature pulled back, its wings flapping in the wind, staring down at the raven hair teen in his hand. He couldn't explain why, but he suddenly felt a HUGE surge of power shoot out of the boy…No, it was only its own imagina-
…..BA-bump
"W-What?" The beast gawked, eyes widened as red energy once again flared around Ragna like a solar flare, the power burning into the creature's skin. Wait…..was his hair chang-
….BA-BUMP!
BA-BUMP!
BA-BUMP
Ragna's eyes shot wide open, what was once the blue sapphire orbs were now crimson slivers of darkness and power radiating from behind. He snarled with his teeth, sharper than any apex predator on this planet, bones repairing themselves as if they were never broken. Ragna felt something deep within him begin to bubble up, power that quickly eclipsed the beast, and it started taking form in his right hand.
"N-NO! THAT IS IMPOSSI-!" The beast's words were silenced in shock as Ragna disappeared from his grip, his fingers sliced off in a bloody display, blood spraying across the sky.
"RRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!" Ragna roared as he spun through the air, sailing towards the beast, slicing right through its left arm and wing. The beast roared in fury as its left limb flew across the sky as did its wing, his right unable to fully support his weight as both it and Ragna plummeted to the earth in different directions. In Redgrave Park, an elderly lady hummed softly as she fed the pigeons, enjoying the nice weather. Suddenly, the birds flew away once a loud SPLASH echoed in the area, the water exploding before falling back into the pond. The woman hummed in curiosity before jumping in terror as a loud BOOM followed, looking over to see smoke and metal explode from a nearby skyscraper that went on for several seconds before stopping.
"PUAH!" The woman looked over to see a young man shoot out of the water, hair and clothes soaked and seemingly carrying something in his right hand.
"Oh my, Dear are you alright?" The older woman asked standing from her, running towards the edge to help the young man. Ragna panted and gasped for air, the aura around him dispersing and whatever effects it had were gone, his now raven hair soaked and slick against his head. Ragna looked down at his hand, whatever was there was now gone…what the hell just happened?
"Are you okay, Dearie?" Ragna looked down at the woman, then back at the pond he landed in, wondering where that beast had ended up. He had so many questions running through his head: What was that thing? What happened to him? What was Sparda? Who was that woman? What did all of thi-Wait a minute, he felt like he was forgetting something.
"...OH CRAP! SCHOOL!" Before the old woman could ask, Ragna quickly ran past her and towards Redgrave Academy. He had so many questions, ones he needed answers for, ones he had no idea how he would get.
But those were nothing to the amount of trouble he was gonna be in when his girls found out he was late! He just hoped they would believe him on this one, I mean how could he make up what the hell just happened?!
(The Marvelous Devil)
Elsewhere in Redgrave, within a church, a nun hummed a soft melody as she tended to her duties within the house of the Lord: Sweeping, lighting candles, praying, and all sorts to get the place back into tip top shape in her time of absence. She had been away for nearly two months traveling the world, for business and time for herself. This one was very important for if the time would come, that they would be ready. She stopped once she reached for a picture frame she kept in her office, seeing a smiling boy with raven hair laughing in her lap, a smile on her lips.
BEEP
BEEP
The Nun reached for her phone, of which she only used for phone calls and news updates, opening it up to see a new one. She gasped in shock and fear at the video playing, showing a monstrous creature attacking bursting from the alleyway, only to be cut off once the building began collapsing. She did not need to be there to know what it was, for one has not been sighted in nearly over a decade, but she recognized what it was…..and why it had appeared once more.
"Ragna!"
(The Marvelous Devil)
On the outskirts of Redgrave City, overlooked by a hill, cars and buses and all sorts of motor vehicles drove back and forth leaving and entering the city either into New York or elsewhere. One motorcycle stopped on the side of the road, overlooking the city as the individual angled their glasses to get a better view. She chuckled as she sat back in her seat and began driving down the road.
"Found ya."
(The Marvelous Devil)
"I'M HERE! I'M HERE!" Ragna exclaimed as he kicked the door open, bolted for his seat and hopped in it. The students around him stared at him with weird expressions, as if he wasn't completely soaked head to toe in water…..and some were admittedly admiring the view as well. The only one who was not amused by this whole thing was his teacher, Mr. Harrington, a small frown on his lips as he stared at the raven hair teen.
"Thank you for joining us….for the end of first period, Mr. Redgrave." Ragna's eyes widened, reaching for his phone…..which was not soaking wet and broken from when he landed in the pond.
"And I'm sure you have all of your homework finished and ready to turn in, yes?" The man asked, walking up to Ragna's desk. Ragna happily nodded, reaching for air….wait a minute. Ragna looked over his back to see that his backpack was gone, it must've been destroyed when the giant beast hit him, or when he landed in the pond…..regardless he now didn't have a damn backpack….and no homework.
"Um…would you believe me when I say a giant draconic monster chased me across town and ate my homework?" Ragna asked, smiling confidently. I mean, it was very true and he was sure it'd be on the news sooner or later.
"Hilarious, and I'm really sure it tore off your clothes and pants, yes?" He asked, gesturing to Ragna's torn shirt and pants revealing his muscular chest and boxers.
"...Yeah, actually it did." The teacher took a deep breath, staring down at the hybrid with a small glare.
"Mr. Redgrave, the new year has barely even started and you're already being a problem."
"Wha-!"
"You seem, Mr. Redgrave, when I look at you I see a young man willing to throw his future away because he doesn't care about anything but his own ego." Ragna did a double take, wondering what the hell was going on, but that didn't hide the anger on his face.
"Okay, that was kind of out of lin-!"
"You also will not take responsibility for your own actions…..such as your little incident in the girl's locker room." Mr. Harrington said, crossing his arms.
"That wasn't even me! You guys just blamed me because you couldn't find the culprit and I was easy picking because I like wom-!"
"I think what makes this much more troubling is how Mrs. Roman and your own Aunt Miss Cardinay put so much faith in your success that it blinds them to the trouble you cause. Much how you drag down Miss Parker and Miss Stacey potential, while nearly ruining Miss Eleison reputation."
"WHAT?! I SHOW YOU-!"
DING
"And that will be all, students, let today be a lesson for the new assignment….and what not to be." Mr. Harrington explained to the smirking and laughing students, walking past the red faced raven hair teen, his anger boiling over to the point where his fingers bent the edges of his desk.
"Do I make myself clear, or is there anything you want to say, Mr. Redgrave?" Ragna wanted to say so much after the crap he's been through. He wanted to call the man a biased little creep who favors those because this school never gave Ragna a chance, he wanted to call him out because deep down he feels like Mr. Harrington was the one who was spying in the ladies locker. He wanted to walk up and punch him square in the nose, slam him onto his own desk, and beat the ever living sh…Woah, where did that all come from? Ragna took a deep breath, feeling that burning heat in his cheeks, before glaring at the teacher once more.
"...Anyone ever tell you you're a giant, MASSIVE, dic-!"
(The Marvelous Devil)
Ragna mumbled under his breath as he walked down the hall, leaving a trail of water behind him, silently cursing Mr. Harrington who now gave him detention at the end of the week. Today just went from amazing, to crap, to downright horrible with everything that was going on. He ignored everyone around him, even some were on their phones over the recent news of 'monster attack' and talking amongst themselves before stopping to look at Ragna. The nearly half naked soaked teen would be enjoying all the damn attention if he wasn't pissed right now.
The worst thing was what he said….got to Ragna, like really got to him. He could care less if people called him a pervert…..because he DID NOT peek in the girls bathroom. There was being a connoisseur of the opposite sex and just being a sleaze ball, and it hurt when nearly everyone but a few believed him. He didn't get expelled, thankfully, but he was punished by cleaning the halls and taking community service for two weeks. What really hurt was what the teacher said about Penny and the girls…..because most of it wasn't entirely untrue. Kyrie was one of the most loved students in the school, while Penny was considered one of the more outcasted members by the popular kids she was still highly respected by the teachers for how incredibly intelligent she was, being the most smartest girl in school….in his totally unbiased but a little bias opinion of his. Gwen was considered the quietest of the three, and she rarely cared what others thought about her…..but he did.
He believed the school had a massive infatuation with Kyrie, understandable of course, that it made them blind. Everytime he talks to her, many believe she only did it out of kindness, or simply because he somehow was blackmailing her. Jokes on them of course. It was very much similar to Penny and Gwen, the other friends they have, had similar thoughts of him. He didn't let it get to him because no matter what he always had them, and he couldn't be anymore happier. And yet it begged the question, was he holding them back? If he didn't find some future job or purpose, would they put aside their dreams? No, he wouldn't want them to, maybe he was overthinking this…or.
"Ragna!" Speaking of girls, Ragna turned around to see Penny, Gwen, and Kyrie walking towards them with a mix of concern and annoyance on their faces.
"Oh, hey girls, looking fine as ever. Did you put makeup on for me, Penny? Ya know you never have to for me." Ragna complimented, hoping that they were just here for him and not what was probably already spread information from the students.
"Ragna, were you really late for class and are…..you…..half….naked?!" Penny and the girl's cheeks flushed red at the sight of Ragna's half naked body, almost like he was wearing those chapless pants.
"I am…you like it?" Ragna asked, gesturing to his perfectly molded abs that glistened thanks to his soaking body, taking Penny's hand and pressing it against them enjoying her stunned expression behind the glasses.
"Do not change the subject! I….wow….I cannot believe you were late to sc…Oh my…T-TO school! Of all the things…..Oh my god these are real!" Penny muttered, hand rubbing up and down Ragna's chest.
"Penny. Focus." Gwen reminded her, only to groan in annoyance when Kyrie slowly walked up and began rubbing Ragna's chest, blushing at how incredibly hard his muscles were, shuddering when the raven hair teen flexed just to illustrate the point.
"Come on Gwen, join us, it's amazing." Ragna beckoned, smirking at his annoyed girlfriend.
"Girls, focus." Gwen pulled Penny and Kyrie away as Ragna chuckled, enjoying his girlfriend's reactions, and it seemed several others had similar thoughts as some girls ogled at his body while some called him indecent for his choice of clothes. At least he wasn't completely naked, so that was a plus. Finally getting control of her more hormonal instincts and fanning her face to calm the growing blush on her cheeks, Penny looked back up at her raven hair boyfriend.
"Ragna, what happened?" Said teen looked between each three of them, while they seemed stern, he saw the concern in their eyes.
"Okay…..I was at-!"
"Woah! Tiger, where were you hiding these?" Imagine Ragna's surprise when he felt a finger tapping his abs, looking down to see MJ kneeling down and admiring his abs much like the girls. Behind her, Michelle was staring at her phone typing, but every so often she would look off her phone and back at Ragna, before returning to her phone.
"Oh, I've had these since I woke up this morning." Ragna said.
"Funny, but seriously, good for you for keeping yourself in shape. Surprised you didn't try joining sports with how built you are." MJ noted as she stood back up and smiled up at the hybrid.
"Naw, then I'd be stealing all the fame and glory…..and the school doesn't want me admiring the cheerleaders but that's never stopped me." Ragna mused with a shrug.
"...By the way, your freckles make you look absolutely stunning MJ." Ragna complimented, the redhead giggling as she walked past the raven hair teen.
"Did anyone ever tell ya that you have no self-restraint when it comes to girls?" MJ asked.
"I call it how I see it, for example Penny's glasses are wonderfully cleaned today and I bet Gwen has come up with a new killer original soundtrack, or and Kyrie has my favorite perfume: Strawberry." Ragna listed.
"Well, as amusing as I find it, you are gonna have to learn some self-restraint, Tiger." Ragna never really understood the point of the nickname, but he loved hearing it roll off of MJ's tongue. Michelle said nothing as she followed her adoptive sister's steps when Ragna turned to see his girlfriend's soft glares.
"...Was it something I sai-Ow, Ow." Ragna muttered as all three girls were not pinching his cheek. Once they were done punishing his poor skin, Ragna rubbed his sore cheek before continuing.
"Okay, okay. As I was saying, I was attacked by a gi-!"
"Mr. Redgrave." Ragna turned around to see Ms. Roman making her way towards him, a small amused smirk on her lips.
"I don't believe you've had swim class this semester." The teacher teased, enjoying Ragna's deadpan stare.
"Ha….ha…ha, Miss Roman. Is it about homework, well I regret to inform you that my backpack is gone." Ragna stated with an annoyed grunt.
"We'll talk about that later, but no, your aunt is here to see you." Ragna's eyes widened and his expression took a shocked turn, knowing full well that she was not referring to Cass.
"...Auntie Leslie….." Ragna muttered, remembering that Cass said something like that earlier this morning. His true adoptive Aunt, who had raised him for a long time before he moved in with Cass, was a Catholic Nun and Reverend Mother of the Redgrave Church. She was adorned by many, being the respectable motherly figure she was made to be…..but get on her bad side, and you'll get a Nun's scorn. She was also the head of the Redgrave Academy Board since it was her family that built this place a long time ago.
"Yeah she wants you to meet her outside. I'll inform your teachers that you were let out early….oh and I have the nurses prepare a second pair of clothes for you. Can't let you walk around in barely any clothes….but good job in keeping yourself in shape." Miss Roman stated, walking past the raven hair teen.
"She totally wants me." Ragna muttered as he watched her go, now seeing his girlfriend's stun expressions.
"Oh! Aunt Leslie is back, why didn't you tell us?!"
"Pretty sure I barely had a chance to explain anything." Ragna noted, rubbing the back of his head before Gwen pulled his cheek once more.
"Don't think just because Miss Cardiney is back means you found a way out of this conversation, you are sorely mistaken."
"But….But I wasn't trying to get out of this." Ragna muttered, wondering what the hell was going on.
"Hmm….why do you think your Aunt is picking you up early, Ragna? Didn't she just get back from her trip?" Kyrie asked, tapping her chin, Ragna humming in agreement. It wasn't normal for Aunt Leslie to call him early in the day when school had just started.
"I'm not sure, Kyrie, but I'm sure it's nothing serious. She probably just misses her favorite nephew."
"You're her only nephew."
"All the more reason." Ragna said, just as the bell rang.
"Oh! We're gonna be late for class!" Penny exclaimed, about to make her way to class, only for Ragna to grab her hand before she could get away.
"Hold on, just a little something." Penny turned in confusion before giggling as Ragna kissed her cheek. Just because they were confused about what happened and annoyed, doesn't stop them from loving him and the affection he gave them. No one was around anymore so Ragna could do whatever he wanted, even pinch Penny's butt. He moved onto Gwen, ignoring her red cheeks as he kissed her on the corner of her lips, just enough to tease her.
"No pervert comment this time?" Ragna teased as he moved onto Kyrie who returned the kiss, giggling as he gently pinched her ass.
"Love ya girls, we can talk later at my place!" Ragna waved them goodbye as he began making his way to the nurses office for the second pair of clothes.
"Ragna!" Said raven hair turned to Penny.
"Did you think of what you wanted to be?" Ragna's eyes widened, realizing that while he was feeling really excited about earlier before that monster attack, he didn't actually have the answer.
"U…Uh yeah! I'll tell ya later! Bye Girls love ya!" With that the raven hair teen hastened his step from the three towards the nurses office. Maybe he can just come up with something, it can't be that hard.
(The Marvelous Devil)
"Auntie!" Ragna exclaimed with a beaming smile, now in clean school attire, walking down the steps towards his Auntie Leslie. The Reverend Nun smiles growing wider at the sight of her nephew, walking up to embrace the raven hair teen.
"Oh my little Morningstar, it's good to see you~~!" Leslie cooed, grabbing Ragna by both his cheeks and pulling him down, being a few inches shorter than the teen. Morningstar was also a nickname she had given him ever since he could remember as well, something about Jesus, he didn't remember.
"Auntie~~!" Ragna groaned in embarrassment at possibly being watched as his Aunt coddled him just like she did when he was a kid. As long as he could remember, the Nun had raised him just as much, if not more than Aunt Cass. He had lived with her until he got into Redgrave Academy where he decided to move to just be a little closer to the academy about two years ago. His Aunt allowed it so long as he lived under Cass' house and rules, but of which was a bonus for him since it was with Cass.
"Ragna, your hair!" Leslie muttered, noticing how wet and slick it was.
"Oh! Yeah, funny story. Really crazy story in fact, Auntie! I was attacked by a giant frickin monst-MMPH!" Ragna's eyes widened when his auntie clamped his mouth shut with her hand, her expression wide and checking if anyone was around listening. Once the coast was clear, Leslie sighed and pulled her hand away.
"Ragna, sweetie, please come with me. I….I have something to show you."
"Uh…did I do something wrong?" Ragna asked, wondering why his aunt was so cautious. Did the school tell her about all those 'incidents', or lies as he called them, and told his aunt?
"No. No, just please come with me." His aunt ordered going into her car. Usually when his aunt was like this there was some terrible thing happening, like Uncle Ben, but did it have something to do with that monster? Seeing no point in standing there, he joined her in the car and sat silently beside her in the car. It was a long awkward drive, Ragna wondering if he had done something wrong, or whatever his auntie wanted to show him. Finally, due to all the traffic, it took about an hour or so to arrive at the Catholic Redgrave Church.
Ragna had nothing against the Church, or Christians in general, but for some reason the place always made him…..sick. Not like the mentally disgusted, but like he actually got sick whenever he entered a church. He could never explain it since he always thought they looked pretty, but he could never stand within a church for more than an hour or so without the need to vomit. Of course it was only INSIDE the church where he felt sick, he could walk around it.
"Auntie, I love the Church and all, but I-!"
"Just follow me, Sweetie, it will be alright." Leslie promised, guiding Ragna around the building, towards a nice table where he would talk and spend time with Leslie. His aunt guided over to a seat, taking the one across from him, and it seemed she had everything ready with sun tea and some small wooden box in between them. He had never seen the thing before, so Leslie must've got it on her trip overseas.
"So…..whatcha wanna talk about, Auntie?" Ragna asked as Leslie handed him the tea. He didn't really like the stuff, but he didn't have to drink it if his aunt didn't notice.
"Ragna…..can you please tell me, what happened?" Leslie asked, reaching for her own phone that he got her weeks before she left for her trip. He figured it would be easier for her to use a damn IPhone since she was old school but it was mainly so he could get in touch with her whenever she was on the move. To his surprise, she already had a video playing, and it was of the monster that he chased him. It was of no surprise the news was already trying to make a story out of it, and to his surprise not a single one of the clips had him in it but that was no doubt due to the camera shaking and for all they knew it was just some frickin random monster attack.
"Oh! Right, so here I was minding my own business, when a giant monster showed up and tried to take me out! And I was like 'Aw he-!"
"Ragna. I'm being serious. This is serious." Leslie's soft but concerned tone stopped the raven hair teen, reminding him that he wasn't supposed to be trying to impress his Aunt with this story, he wasn't with his girls.
"Uh….right, sorry." So Ragna began to retell the events of this morning, all the while Leslie remained impassive during the story, unreadable. He wondered if she was scared of something, for him? Don't know why, damn monster crashed into a building and have been no reports of it since
"And then I got to school and….here we are." Ragna finished gesturing to the Church and table. Leslie took a deep breath, clearly contemplating her next words, before looking down at the cross in her hands.
"...I prayed this day would never come." Leslie muttered, quiet enough that Ragna could hear her voice but not understand what she said.
"Auntie?" Ragna tilted his head in confusion, before Leslie leaned back up.
"Ragna, before I begin, let me ask you: Do you believe in God?" Imagine Ragna's shock and confusion when those words left his Aunt's mouth. What did this have to do with what just happened? Clearly his aunt was waiting for an answer, a very strange one for sure.
"Well, you've always told me the stories from the Bible, and whatnot. Personally I can see God being real, but…..I-I'm sorry, what does this have to do with what happened, Auntie?" Ragna asked.
"...What if I told you Ragna, that God IS real. That it's all REAL?"
"...Huh?" Ragna tilted his head.
"I'm sorry. Let me explain from the beginning….the VERY beginning." Leslie began. She feared this day would come, but she was prepared…..for everything. Ragna took a moment to adjust his seat, wondering what sort of story his aunt was going to tell him.
"Eons ago, before Man was ever a concept, there was darkness. An unending void of nothingness that had no reach of expansion. When suddenly, boom…..Light was born across this infinite expansion. None know what made this Light, nor can we comprehend its true state of being, but this Light was the cause of Creation itself." Leslie began, gesturing to the sun as if to illustrate her point.
"...God?" Ragna asked, seeing this seemed pretty similar to the Bible.
"Perhaps, perhaps not. Your mother never gave me the answer when she told me this story."
"My mom?" Ragna asked, but Leslie continued her story.
"From the Light came the Heavens and the Earth, Eden itself, and came forth the Lord himself: God. God created the Heavens, the Seas, and soon….Man. Man was born upon the earth, women, children, life itself expanded across the cosmos. Life flourished across worlds, across the stars, time and space, everywhere." Leslie seemed to be in her own head, sighing dreamily as the wind blew between them. He could see this story meant a lot to Leslie, for him it was quite interesting, but it still confused him.
"But…..with Light…there is always its shadow, it's Darkness." Leslie stated, casting a shadow over Ragna's outstretched hand.
"Hell, a infernal realm of torment and death birthed from the remnants of darkness the Light casted out. Its ruler, the Demon King, looked upon the realms beyond and decided it wanted Eden and the Light for all of Inferno. And so begins the Holy War of Light and Darkness between the Angels of Heaven, the Gods of the Pantheons, and the Demons of Hell. This war went on for eons, with neither side pushing and the only ones suffering were the mortals of Man." Leslie took a deep breath, sipping on her tea while Ragna remained silent, listening to every word. He usually doesn't care for big story stuff…..but damn did this sound cool.
"Then….he appeared."
"He?"
"A warrior born from fire and darkness, he who was not man or angel or god: But Devil. He was a legendary swordsman among his peers in Inferno. He was so powerful he was said to rival the Kings of Hell if not surpass them. He went by many names across the vast creation, but he was known by all as the Legendary Dark Knight."
"Sparda." Leslie proclaimed. Ragna had to admit, that was a badass name.
"...Wait a minute…..that's the name I…I've heard it before." Ragna muttered in realization.
"Sparda had no hate for his brethren, but he learned to love Man's compassion and chaos, and took his blade to defend the Light. With his power he stood between the cosmic balance of Light and Darkness. Until two thousand years ago, he used his grand power to seal away the Gates of Hell." Leslie exclaimed.
"Sparda ended the war, but in doing so he gave up much of his power, miraculously becoming Man himself. Sparda disappeared into story, into legend…..until his became a myth…..and so few remember. Some say he went on to become a warlord across the stars…..some say he stayed on Earth and found love…some say he founded a city in the name of the Church…..and called it Redgrave City." Ragna, who was about to take a sip of the tea for the first time, spat out some onto the grass.
"W-WHAT!? Auntie! Are you saying that statue in the park is actually Sparda?!" Ragna exclaimed, eyes wide in shock if not more now that Leslie nodded her head.
"You never found it weird that there was no name?"
"I just thought he was a cool guy who didn't need his name sketched on a rock." Ragna shrugged his shoulders, Leslie chuckling as the two calmed down. Ragna had to admit that Sparda sounded like an absolute chad of a man, a complete and total badass…but wait, what did all this mean?
"Aunt Leslie, why are you telling me this?" Ragna asked, leaning forward. Leslie's soft smile disappeared as she reached for the wooden box between them.
"Ragna…what do you remember of your parents? Of your mother? Father?" Ragna thought about them for a second, and he didn't get much. He remembers Jack all of his father, and he was too young to remember when his mother died.
"Nothing much, Auntie, like you said when I was little: My mom died when I was what, like two? And I don't remember anything about my old man, but I never let that stuff worry me." Ragna shrugged. He didn't see the point in worrying, since he had both Leslie, Cass, and the girls why should he care?
"Do you remember waking up in the hospital?" Leslie asked.
"Yeah, you said we got into a terrible car accident when I was six." Ragna said. He remembered that quite well: He woke up to find Leslie lying beside him, bandages wrapped around his head and body, no doubt from the car accident.
"Do you remember anything before that?" Ragna took a moment to think of the life before the hospital…..huh, thinking about it now he never thought of doing so. It was just one of those things he didn't let worry him…now, why can't he actually remember anything?
"...Ragna, you were six when your mother died." His eyes slowly turned to the older woman in confusion, the nun reached out to the box and opened it up.
"Ragna…you have amnesia."
"...What?" Ragna dropped the tea cup, unsure how to really take it in. He had amnesia? No. No that's impossible, maybe he just didn't remember his mom because he was so young…..oh god.
"Your mother….your mother died in a fire in your old home, and much was destroyed, and your father disappeared sometime afterwards. This is all I could find of them." Ragna watched as Leslie pulled out an old and burned photo, holding it out for the hybrid. Ragna slowly reached out and took it in his hand, trying very hard not to break off any of the scorched edges. He looked at the photo to see a family posing for a picture, the man's face and upper body was missing from the frame burned from whatever caused the fire. The figure appeared to be wearing some sort of purple suit of victorian style clothing, but what really caught his attention was the woman standing beside him. She was beautiful…but why did she seem so familiar?
The woman had long wavy blonde hair that went past her shoulders, and crystal blue eyes. She wore a long black dress that draped past her legs with a red shawl wrapped around her shoulders, and a strange red medallion around her neck. Ragna scratched his head wondering where he had seen her before….that's when he saw the child. It was a baby, probably not that old, wrapped in a red cloth. Ragna stared at the woman and child…when it all began to come together.
"Leslie…..this is my mother."
"Eva Redgrave."
"And…..my father?" Leslie nodded her head as Ragna stared at the burnt photo. It was quite a sight seeing what his parents, or his mother at the least, looked like. It was something he thought he would never see or honestly asked for…and yet.
"Auntie…I still don't get it, why tell me now? Why even tell me at all?" Ragna asked, looking back up at the nun.
"Ragna, what do you think that attack was?" Leslie asked.
"...I originally thought it was a giant gator that got dipped in mutation ooze…..but clearly it's not anymore." Ragna muttered, rubbing the back of his head.
"Ragna, did it say anything to you, at all?"
"Yeah, it kept calling me…Sparda….." Ragna slowly looked up in realization at his aunt. That thing…..that thing was a demon, a demon of Hell itself. It called him Sparda, which made no sense…..unless.
"Auntie, is Sparda….my grandfather?" For the first time his Auntie gave him a deadpan expression, sighing and taking his hands in hers.
"No Ragna…..Sparda is your father."
….Okay, he was not expecting THAT. Sparda, the legendary demon warrior he just heard about: Savior of Creation, Slayer of Demon Kind…was his own father. He looked down at the photo, seeing the burnt image of his father's suit.
"What…..What are you saying, Auntie?"
"I'm saying, Ragna, that you are the offspring of two worlds: Of Man and Devil. A hybrid of a human, and a demon." Leslie explained, holding out a steel cross and tapping Ragna's finger. It wasn't rough or hard, but Ragna hissed in pain and ripped his hand away, looking down to see his skin burning. Yet before his very eyes, for what would take weeks happened in seconds with his skin healing instantly. His eyes widened in shock….and sudden horror at the very concept of the idea.
"No….No." Ragna muttered, instantly pushing off the chair and backing away. All of this was so sudden, he just found out who his parents were, how his mother died, that his own fricken dad was a legendary and powerful warrior…..and he didn't remember ANY of it. He had no memories of his mother, his father…..nothing! This was all so fast, and with everything that happened today…Holy crap, he could've DIED today! Ragna began hyperventilating, clutching his head, and before he knew it images flashed before his eyes. Home burning, screaming, the woman standing there waiting for him. His whole world, everything that he thought he ever knew, had just come shattering down. Leslie stood from her spot and ran over, pulling her nephew into her embrace, trying to soothe her nephew's pain.
"I prayed that I would never tell you all of this, I didn't want you to bear this pain." Leslie muttered, holding the boy she cradled since he could walk. This is a burden she had to carry, and one she wished she could still…..but it seems Fate had other plans.
"...How long?" Leslie felt Ragna pull away from her embrace, her face distorting from panic to a slow heated gaze.
"How long were you going to keep this from me? Until I turned eighteen, until I was ready?" Ragna asked. His Aunt Leslie, the person who was practically his mother since he was a kid, had kept this life changing secret from him for a long time.
"...Were you ever gonna tell me this?" Now Leslie looked more guilty than ever, standing to stare up at the teen, pain and guilt in her eyes.
"Ragna…..I-!" Before she could stop him, the teen let out an angered snarl and bolted away from the table and church, trying to gather as much distance from that place as he could. Leslie did not follow, she simply sat back down and prayed. She prayed her nephew would find peace with this, she prayed she would be forgiven by her Lord for carrying such sin and her own selfishness, she prayed…She prayed they would not find him.
(The Marvelous Devil)
For the first time in a long time, Ragna had a defeated look in his eyes, he hated being the one defeated…unless it made his girls happy but that was there and not now. He already had enough on his plate with finding his future in all of this, one that everyone keeps thrusting upon him, and now he had all of THIS. Today was supposed to be where everything was going his way, but no, it all went down the drain. He got attacked by a literal demon, he got detention and embarrassed in class, he learned of a past he has no recollection of, and he still didn't know what his future was.
He heard some cheering nearby and saw several adults and teens cheering as it showed some heroes on the TV, from the Guardians of the Globe taking down the Mauler Twins to Homelander stopping a bank robbery. At least heroes had where it's at, they knew what they wanted and got it. He had a legacy he could not even fathom…wait, did he now have THIS responsibility? Being a demon hybrid…..whatever that meant. Shaking his head, Ragna made his way into Aunt Cass' cafe, ignoring the few patrons that waved at him. He wasn't even in the mood to compliment the babes.
"Ragna~~!" Cass cheered, the surrogate aunt pulling him into a hug, the teen unable to match her enthusiasm but hug her with one arm.
"Hey Cass."
"How was your day with Leslie?" Ragna resisted the urge to roll his eyes, still completely furious at Leslie for holding this for so many years.
"It was…something." Ragna muttered, pulling away from Cass. The older woman noticed the dull tone her adopted nephew had, a look of bewilderment in her eyes, never hearing such a tone in his voice.
"Well, the girls are upstairs waiting in your room. Ya know, Ragna, you never bring any guy friends home. You should really bring some over. I'm sure they will love those colorless comics of yours." Cass commented as she followed Ragna to the stairs, waving to her customers for a moment to talk to Ragna.
"Mm…." Ragna grunted.
"Hey." Cass called softly, holding Ragna's shoulder. She had never seen him in such a depressing mood before, wondering what the heck happened today.
"Are you okay? Did something happen with Leslie?" Ragna turned around to face Cass, surprising the woman as he wrapped his arms around her waist, a small gasp escaping her throat as he hugged her. With that, Ragna let go of Cass and grabbed Mochi, the cat making no resistance as Ragna quickly hurried up the stairs leaving Cass in confusion. Once Ragna opened his door he was greeted to the sight of his girlfriends waiting on his bed for him: Penny was on his laptop no doubt doing homework or home projects, while Gwen was listening to music, and Kyrie was reading the more slice of life manga he gets for the girls.
"Ragna!" The three exclaimed as Penny closed his laptop and hopped off the bed and ran over to him.
"How was it with Leslie to-OOH?!" Penny gasped as Ragna pulled her into his embrace, head pressed into the nape of her neck. Penny wasn't surprised by the sudden affection, but feeling Ragna slightly shake in her embrace was surprising, muttering his name but the teen pulled away. The three were surprised by his defeated expression, letting Mochi hop onto his bed.
"Ragna, are you okay?"
"...Is it alright if we just go to bed…..together?" After all that happened, after everything he had just learned and wished he never did…..he was…..he was just….. tired. Mentally. Penny looked at the girl's surprised and concerned expression, neither against the idea.
"Let me call Aunt May, first." Penny kissed Ragna's cheek and walked out of the room, the teen slowly kicking his shoes off and walking over to the bed, collapsing face first onto his pillow. Feeling shifting beside him, Ragna looked on his left to see Gwen smirking at him, slowly reaching out and holding his shoulder.
"...Hey."
"...Hey." Ragna muttered back, reaching out and running a hand through her hair.
"Can you promise me something?"
"What?"
"...Never cut your hair." Gwen was confused by the question, but she remembered that Ragna had a surprisingly prideful personality when it came to hair, especially his. Hearing giggling on the other side of him, Ragna turned to see Kyrie giggling as she cuddled beside him.
"I know how you love cuddles, Ragna." Kyrie cooed as she slid closer to her boyfriend.
"...Never stop being pure, Kyrie." Ragna muttered, making her giggle more.
"Meow." Ragna looked up at Mochi, the fat cat laying on his pillow.
"..."
"...Meow."
"...Fine, you can sleep on my bed." Ragna twisted his body as Gwen laid on his other arm, kissing his shoulder with a small peck. Penny joined the three on the bed and turned the lights off, despite the homework they had, they knew Ragna was clearly going through something. Just as he was there for them they would be here for him, even if it was just sleeping. As the world became quiet around him, Ragna could barely sleep, even as the girls around him did. It seems as everything was changing….now
Now what?
(The Marvelous Devil)
The next day, Ragna walked into Redgrave Park, the birds chirping in the branches above as he walked along. He honestly could care less about school considering he was in trouble from yesterday, he just wanted to be alone. The girls were still asleep when he woke up, and simply wrote a note telling them he was going early. Sure it was SUPER out of character, but by the time they found out he would be here. He just needed time alone, with his own thoughts about…all of that. He reached into his pocket, pulling out the burnt photo of his parents, staring at his mother.
"...So…you're my dad, huh?" Ragna asked, looking up at the statue of the Founder of Redgrave. Thinking about it now, it was weird that his last name was the same as the city he was born in but he just figured coincidences.
"...Honestly I don't know what to say, since I never thought of what I wanted from you." Ragna muttered, walking around the statue, staring at the armored figure. This was a being so powerful he ended a war that put all wars to shame, and that was just the start of his legend, and who knows what else he did.
"...I…I …What am I?" Ragna asked.
"A kid talking to an old statue." Ragna turned to his left to see a surprisingly beautiful woman leaning on a bench. She had lengthy blonde hair, black shades over her eyes, and wore a black corset, a choker, leather pants and high heeled boots.
"You do that in your spare time?" The woman asked as she stood from her bench.
"Oh, uh sorry. I just….Um…yeah can't really explain why I'm talking to a statue." Ragna muttered, scratching his head.
"Hey it's fine. Though I am curious why you're out here talking to one, lonely?" She asked, standing beside him.
"No….just been through a lot." Ragna said, staring up at the statue of his father.
"I bet, kid your age probably has a lot on his plate, and unlike them, you don't get a choice like the others." The woman said, almost taunting Ragna, and while he found her choice of working strange. He was incredibly annoyed by it, and he had enough of that for one day.
"Yeah. I guess. Thanks lady." He would love to contemplate her amazing breasts, but he was annoyed and wished to leave, walking past her.
"Don't take it personal, unfortunate as it is, you sadly never had that choice to begin with Mr. Redgrave." Ragna stopped mid-step, eyes widened and turned to the woman in confusion.
"I'm sorry…..who are you? And how did you know my last name?" The woman smiled as she reached for her glasses, taking them off to reveal crystal blue eyes. For a split second, Ragna saw his mother standing before him, black dress and all…..but now it was THIS woman.
"My name is Trish, and I'm here to help you…..Son of Sparda."
(The Marvelous Devil)
And with that we finish with the latest chapter in The Marvelous Devil!
Achievement Unlocked: Revelation (Learn the truth of his past)
Ragna has come to learn of a past he has no memories of: A mother he never knew, a father whose shadow eclipses over all, and a past that will define who he is. No he isn't gonna start being angsty, but this is the first step into power. I talk last chapter who I based his character around (Ichigo and Issei) and honestly looking back on it I wanted to switch it around. And honestly the characters who fit TMD Ragna the most is literally Uzui Tengen from Demon Slayer and a few others like Meliodas from SDS, Dark Schneider from the Manga series Bastard and now Netflix Anime. Another way to depict this Ragna as I told Saiya on Discord: ADJ Ragna is like Izuku/Deku while TMD Ragna is arguably a better written Bakugo. I tried being safe with ADJ Ragna cause the slightest thing will make people pull the 'Sue' card. This Ragna...(Cracks knuckles) is just the beginning.
Which is why, yeah, the way his school treats him seems pretty outlandish as far as I know. It's not really based on my experience, but I don't think it's that outrageous that school boards would hate a kid for joining their prestigious academy cause of his aunt who is the head of the school. I don't wanna say TMD Ragna is dumb, but honestly it's one of the few things I wanna keep him bad at since it makes him more believable like say he could be good at math but science is not his forte. Regardless, TMD Ragna is gonna make a name for himself, and he won't let anyone stop him...or in that sort of sense I mean. There are more reasons why he didn't tell the girls or ask why he can't tell anyone and I'll explain it as this arc reaches its end.
In truth I had more for the whole exposition, but I felt like it would reveal so much more so I kind of watered it down so its more focused on Sparda and I think I did a pretty good job. It was pretty simply and got straight to the point. I know there hasn't been a lot of 'super hero' stuff going on but we're building to it, gotta build up to the heroes. And especially villains like Kang or Sabretooth, one of the better fights these coming volumes. Seriously, I am so hyped for these fights I am writing them in a separate doc so I don't forget. Also interactions with other girls.
Back to Kang, gonna get into some spoilers: Him and Ragna get into the final fight for the first Kang centered arc, they fight on Damocles ship when suddenly suddenly bam: Ant-Man (Hank) uses both Ultron and Ants to hold Kang's wife Ravonna (Time Variant Version) that if he does no surrender her will take and disable Ravonna's time distortion belt which is what keeps him stable in time (Like Tracer from Overwatch). He needs his helmet though to call the ants off which is next to Ragna, imagine Hank's surprise when Ragna kicks the helmet with super strength knocking the genius out! Ragna continues the fight with Kang with the winner to be decided when the arc happens.
That basically gives you an idea on what kind of person both TMD and ADJ Ragna are, I can't for the life of me seeing them using cheap moves like that to win. If Ragna is gonna stop you, he's gonna do it by beating the ever living shit out of you. TMD ain't afraid. It also shows who he sees as friends and foe despite being heroes which puts him at odds. Also plan to expend his little friend circle such as out dear Jacob (MCU Ned Leeds).
Again, again, speaking of Kang. I have to work on my version of the Marvel Multiverse because the MCU, Loki, and What if FUCKED that shit up so bad I hate it. Like oh my god I don't think it could get any worse. Listen, to simplify it for now: My Multiverse is based on Alternate Earths where say, Captain America is still steampunk, or it's the Ultimate Marvel Earth. In my CHRONOVERSE is what we call Alternate Timelines, like saying Peggy Carter becomes the Captain which is what What If is, it's not a Multiverse.
I think that is all for now. I don't actually have much I'm just really tired. Good night yall! Next chapter we get into more of Ragna's past with Penny and our dear old Uncle Ben (Sam Raimi version)...and yes, we are using MCU version of Aunt May I have no regrets.
Next Time: Ragna meets the Lightning Witch herself, Trish, who explains her purpose and his in life and duty as the Son of Sparda. Ragna must learn to activate and control the demon power burning within him if he is to face what is to come, as Ancala is just the beginning. Ragna must sooner come to term with this despite the lack of free choice he has in all of this, especially if it means protecting the ones he loves. Can Ragna accept who he is and take on this great responsibility, or will he fail much like he failed with Uncle Ben? Will Ancala return with a vengeance? Let's find out in the next adventure of The Marvelous Devil Birth of a Hero Part Three: With Great Power!
