Although Magic is legal, Merlin has been hunted out of Camelot. The Aftermath of the caused the citizens to hate magic. Merlin aids the young princess of Avalon Gate long enough to see Arthur's body is preserved in the sacred Isle, then comes in service of the family as a Dragon Lord. Merlin finds a sacred object and spell that could re-awaken Arthur's lying-in-wait body.

Morgause never expected to find herself in the arms of her former arch nemesis—Merlin Emrys. The only problem was, she was married to someone else and Merlin's partner had a life-threatening illness. They knew it wouldn't fix their problems, but at least it gave them a distraction from the problems. That is, until the distraction becomes the problem and more.
