Hey, y'all! This is the rewritten version of the story! I will be putting my own family in here, mostly because I think it would be cool, just changing the names around. Please bear with me as I do have actual books to write as well. Love y'all!
* Yes, I know about the offensive review. I have reported it.
Chapter 5:
10 seconds until lift.
Nikki stood in the enclosed tube as the voice came through the speakers. She glanced worriedly at Cinna as the platform rose. He seemed confident in her, for whatever reason. Light blinded her when she got into the arena. Shaking her head, and blinking, she finally got her vision back. She searched for Peeta! Where was he? There! He was looking her way... shaking his head. What was he trying to say? She glanced at the cornucopia, looking for anything to grab that would help her. Nothing that she could see right away... Her gaze met Peeta's again. He shook his head again, and pointed behind him. He was pointing to the trees. Nikki frowned, but nodded to let him know she understood. 'stay away from the bloodbath'
Peeta's face relaxed as the countdown got closer to the end, and Nikki braced herself. She pointed at Peeta and the trees. He frowned. Then she saw him nod briefly just as the horn sounded. She rushed towards Peeta, ignoring the tributes that were running to the cornucopia, and together they ran towards the tree-line.
"Why did you want me to run here too?" Peeta asked her.
Nikki jerked back from him. "Did you really want to rush into danger? I thought that if you wanted me to avoid the bloodbath, then you could wait too and then grab what you could." She scoffed.
His eyes widened. "Oh," he said as if he had figured something out.
They hid in the trees, and within an hour the first cannons went off. Twelve. Half of the tributes were gone. Nikki snuck to the edge of the trees to look at the cornucopia and saw that no one was there, at least no alive people. She shuddered. "Ready to grab what you might need?"
"Yes, if the others are gone."
"Looks clear," Nikki said, before rushing forward trying to keep her ears and eyes open for any movement or sound around her. She heard a curse from behind her as Peeta ran to catch up.
"You run like a deer," Peeta said, looking this way and that as they ran. "Like at any moment, you are going to dodge left or right."
Nikki let out a quiet laugh. "Playing with my little sister." A moment later, "Duck!" They hit the ground behind a pile of open crates.
A boy's voice called out, "Is that all you want to grab, Cato?"
"Yeah. There's not much left here if anyone shows up later." He laughed. "We can always come back after we take out a few more tributes."
When they left, Nikki waited a little bit longer before peaking out and seeing that the coast was clear. "Looks clear," she said, jumping up to run again. Her legs flew over the ground, stopping at the cornucopia. No one jumped out at them and nothing came flying at them either. "Grab what you think you'll need and then some. You probably won't be here for a while."
Peeta nodded at her words. "Thanks for your advice."
Nikki nodded and turned her back on him so she could grab some food, two bags, a jacket and sleeping bag, and a knife that was hidden under a crate. When her hand pulled the knife out, she heard a click. 'Oh shit.' She turned to Peeta. "Run!" Thankfully, he heeded the warning, because as they ran in different directions... the cornucopia blew up. Nikki got flung a few feet into the air. She landed hard hearing something, probably branches, snap. She was in so much pain from the landing!
"Nikki!" Peeta yelled. "Are you okay?!"
Nikki was gasping in air. Slowly, she sat up, trying not to scream from the pain of landing so hard. Peeta was across the clearing. "I'm okay! Just landed hard!" She was happy that he was worried about her. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah! I wasn't as close to it!" He was coming closer.
"I'm good over here! I think this is the perfect time for us to part ways!" Nikki swallowed the words that wanted to follow. "Now, get out of here before they come back!" She stood up to show him that she was okay, and pain shot down her leg. She bit her bottom lip, whimpering.
Peeta paused in the middle of the clearing. "If you're sure! Be careful out there!" He turned back around and ran away.
"May the odds be in your favor," Nikki said in a pain-filled voice through blood flecked lips. She had bitten through her bottom lip.
~With Addie~
Some girls screamed when the cornucopia blew up. They were all in school, during a break, and forced to watch the games. Addie trembled, seeing her sister in pain. One of the older students saw her reaction and came over to hold Addie tightly. She murmured words that Addie couldn't understand for what seemed like an eternity. Then she unfroze and looked up into grey eyes. "Katniss?"
"I've got you," she said. "Nikki will be okay. It doesn't look that bad, see, she's standing up." Katniss rubbed her hand up and down Addie's back.
"Please don't lie to me," Addie said. "My mom's a doctor too. I know that Nikki broke her leg." Her eyes filled with tears. "Without care, she could worsen and even lose the leg to infection."
Katniss nodded. "You're right. I shouldn't lie. It doesn't look good now, but she isn't dead. Right now, she has a good chance to survive, even with a broken leg. We might not know what's going to happen tomorrow, but we can hope that she gets the medicine she needs."
"Thank you," Addie cried, shaking with her sobs against Katniss.
Katniss wrapped her arms firmly around the girl that was Primrose's age. "Don't worry about it. If you need anything, you know where I am." She gently squeezed the redhead. "I hope everything works out for Nikki and your family."
Three days in a row! This story is coming along a lot better than before. :D Please review!
