Hey, y'all! This is the rewritten version of the story! I will be putting my own family in here, mostly because I think it would be cool, just changing the names around. Please bear with me as I do have actual books to write as well. Love y'all!
I'm trying to get my soap making business off the ground, too, so please wish me luck. Ah! I have so much going on! Lol.
... Last time ...
"Wait!" Came a voice. "Ladies and Gentlemen! The winners of the 74th Hunger Games!"
Nikki looked shocked. "What?" she asked.
Peeta's eyes were wide with shock too. "I think he just said that we both won..."
Nikki burst into tears, sobbing her relief and confusion. The berries fell to the ground as Peeta wrapped his arms around her shaking form. At first she buried her face in his neck, but then she pulled back to look at him. "We get to go home..."
Peeta smiled, tears flowing down his cheeks. "We do." He kissed her eyelids, her nose, her cheeks, and then her lips. A few minutes later, they saw a helicraft in the sky above them and a ladder lowered for them. Peeta helped Nikki up and they each placed one hand and one foot on the ladder, holding onto each other with the other arm. They were frozen in place and then lifted up to the craft. Peeta smiled at Nikki as they rose. Inside the helicraft, Peeta stepped off the ladder and helped Nikki.
Doctors and nurses helped Nikki onto a medical bed and hurried to stick her with needles. Nikki winced every time a new needle was added, even without looking at the needles piercing her arms.
Chapter 10:
Nikki and Peeta walked slowly onto the stage to meet up with Caesar. They were dressed in outfits of matching colors, dark navy blue with red stitching, and Nikki's dress flowed to the floor. They shyly smiled at each other before they reached the center of the stage.
"Hello, hello!" Caesar cried out. "You two look stunning!"
Nikki blushed. "Thank you, Caesar." She smiled at him. "You're looking good today as well."
"Thank you, my dear," he replied. "Please, sit." He motioned to the loveseat and when the two teens sat, Caesar asked, "Now, we are all wondering what went through your minds as Nikki attempted to eat the berries."
Nikki looked sheepishly up at Peeta before answering. "I felt that it was the only way for Peeta to get back to District twelve so he could be with Katniss. I thought that there was no way he would ever like me."
Caesar looked between the two. He was about to say something when Peeta spoke first.
"I started to feel something for Nikki as I took care of her wound. I fell asleep at dawn, after spending all night keeping an eye on her, and woke up briefly when she started moving around. When I woke up later, and saw that she was gone, I panicked. I had just heard a cannon blast, so I dreaded hearing that she could be dead." Peeta leaned over to lean his forehead against Nikki's shoulder. "I found that I couldn't live without knowing if we could make it as a couple."
Caesar looked at the crowd with wide eyes. They were cheering on the young couple. He looked back at the teens, to see them staring into each other's eyes. He reluctantly cleared his throat, drawing their attention and making them both blush. He smiled before asking them more questions.
Later, Peeta and Nikki were back on the train with Haymitch and Effie. "Well," Effie said. "You certainly got their attention. Now, you'll have to pretend to stay in love until they forget about you."
"Why would we have to pretend?" Nikki asked sarcastically.
Effie rolled her eyes at the little girl. "Because, dear, if you stop acting now, they'll know that you faked everything." She shook her head. "Honestly!"
Nikki noticed that Haymitch rolled his eyes at Effie behind her back, so she only verbally attacked Effie. "Effie, listen to me carefully. We didn't fake anything! I was very honest from the beginning. I wasn't faking the pain I was in, or the fact that I would eat the deadly berries. Peeta showed how much he likes me. He isn't faking anything either." At least, she hoped he wasn't. Nikki glared at Effie. "You will keep your opinions to yourself and keep an eye out to see our honesty for yourself."
"Well, I never!" Effie exclaimed.
"You never thought before?" Nikki asked sarcastically, again. "Well, maybe you need to start." Haymitch spilled his drink as he and Peeta started laughing.
Effie started to get angry, but then she noticed how close Peeta was standing to Nikki. Huh, maybe they weren't pretending. President Snow had told her that they were only pretending so that they could both go home. She would have to keep an eye on them, just to make sure. Then she left the compartment.
Nikki shook her head, finally relaxing. She sighed.
"Don't worry about her, Sweetheart," Haymitch said. "She'll come around."
"Perhaps," Nikki replied, turning around to look at the food on the table. She was a little hungry. The healing and work the doctors did to her had worn her out and sleeping for a long time afterwards made her stomach growl. She made her way to the table, sitting down to load her plate. "I don't know about you guys, but I'm starving."
The two guys also sat down at the table and put food on their plates. Haymitch chuckled. "Remember the first day of training when you came out of your room in only a shirt?"
Peeta and Nikki blushed furiously as they thought back to that day.
~ FLASHBACK ~
She could hear glassware being placed down on the table, soft chatter, and the clink of silverware on plates. Nikki sat up in bed, thinking about what day it was. Huh, it was the first day of training! Starting today, for three days, she would be learning what she could to survive in the arena. Nikki rubbed her face as she got out of her bed and made her way out of the room she was given. A choking sound had her looking up sharply. Peeta and Effie were looking at her in shock and Haymitch had a small smile.
"You should really get dressed," Effie said, horrified.
Nikki looked down and blushed when she saw that she was only in her mid-thigh length sleep shirt and panties. She looked up horrified at herself for not getting dressed first and choked out, "Coffee."
Haymitch smiled before fixing her coffee the way he remembered her drinking it before. When he brought it over to her, he smirked and said, "Here, Sweetheart."
"Thanks," Nikki squeaked, taking the hot mug and scampering back to her room.
~ END FLASHBACK ~
"That was a nightmare," Nikki said, shuddering slightly.
"It was embarrassing," Peeta said. Then he looked at Nikki suddenly. "I don't mean that you aren't lovely. I just meant that it was embarrassing for me."
Haymitch laughed. His eyes lit up as he watched them. "I thought it was hilarious. Hearing Peeta choke on air was just a bonus."
This story is coming along a lot better than before. :D I hope that you like this chapter. I'm hoping that I get at least one chapter of this out a week if I can (1/month if life gets too busy) until this story is done. Do I end this story right after the Quarter Quell is announced (Creating a new story for a sequel?)? Or should I keep writing here for however long this idea lasts? Please review!
