Chapter Two-hundred and forty-four: Hulbury Hustle

The reborn trainers woke up in their hotel room in Hulbury, Galar, before they went about getting ready to tackle the day. Today would begin the process of Dawn and the boys issuing their respective challenges to the Hulbury gym leader, Nessa, in their respective bids to earn the badge her gym hands out. And their challenges would be televised as part of Rose's and Oleana's bid to up ratings due to how the current World Coronation Series season wasn't drawing in the level of viewership that they had been hoping for.

As per Oleana's word, Dawn and the boys had to challenge Nessa in the order of Kenny first, Trip second, and Dawn last. This is because Rose's assistant felt it would maximize viewership ratings if Dawn, the trainer that viewers are most interest in, was saved for last against all of the gym leaders. Given that Dawn is the Champion of a foreign region, it made sense to save her for last, as it'd force viewers to stay tuned in so as to not miss any of the action that Sinnoh Champion Dawn Berlitz will be pulling off against the gym leaders of Galar.

There was also the strategizing against Nessa for the respective challenges; as a user of water type Pokémon, Nessa was vulnerable to those using the grass and electric types. As such, Dawn and the boys rotated in Pokémon they owned of those types, or had moves of those types, to maximize their odds of winning against Nessa in the Hulbury gym. Dawn, after thinking about it, realized that Milo in Turffield used the same team that he in the video games in Dawn's previous life had used for battles in his gym for his badge.

If that held true here for Nessa, then Dawn could expect to see her use Goldeen, Arrokuda, and Drednaw. It also made Dawn a bit glad that she had to wait until after the boys, as it'd give her a chance to see if her theory held true. If it did, then Dawn would be able to prep even better for taking on the gyms of Galar. She even did a bit of planning for her team based around her theory, although a part of Dawn was still tempted to do a certain something due to vibes she got from Nessa when they and the others had dinner yesterday.

Dawn didn't exactly like those vibes, so she planned to do something about it.

...

Kenny had his battle against Nessa first, as per the rule set up by Oleana without her even bothering to get the opinion of the reborn trainers because Oleana's a bit-err, because Oleana wanted to maximize ratings. Watching Kenny's battle carefully, Dawn and Trip saw it that, as per what Dawn was feeling, Nessa used a party of Goldeen, Arrokuda, and Drednaw, with the Drednaw being Dynamaxed. It was no issue for Kenny, as he used his named Torterra Roshi to sweep Nessa's entire team, even one-shotting her Dynamazed Drednaw after he had Dynamaxed Roshi.

As such, Kenny got the Water Badge from Nessa. After the necessary period of rest, Nessa and her team were ready to take on Trip's challenge. Similar to Kenny, Trip had won and thus earned the Water Badge. However, rather than use a single Pokémon to sweep Nessa's team, Trip used his named Galvantula Metroid to take out both Goldeen and Arrokuda, then swapped Metroid out to send in his shiny Tangrowth Bashir, who was Dynamaxed and proceeded to one-shot Nessa's Drednaw who was also Dynamaxed. Seeing a Dynamaxed shiny had helped up the ratings.

The following morning was Dawn's go against Nessa and, like the boys before her, Dawn won. However, to answer the vibes she got from Nessa at the dinner meeting at The Captain's Table, Dawn decided to only use fire Pokémon. She used her named Alpha Hisuian Arcanine Argent to one-shot both Goldeen and Arrokuda by using Wild Charge once each on both, being protected from receiving recoil damage thanks to Rock Head. Dawn then swapped Argent out in order to send in Zancrow, her named Volcarona, to take on Nessa's Drednaw.

Zancrow was Dynamaxed, then one-shot the Dynamaxed Drednaw with Max Overgrowth (Zancrow knows Giga Drain). In an amazing display of scissors cuts rock, Dawn had answered Nessa's less than appealing vibes from the dinner meeting, earning the Water Badge in the process. With Dawn and the boys each with a Water Badge from the Hulbury gym, the group was able to proceed. The next gym that Dawn and the boys had to tackle was the one in Motostoke, the one they had to register at in order to challenge the gyms of Galar.

It would be a fire Pokémon gym, led by the gym leader Kabu. Dawn, remembering her time playing the games in her previous life, sort of grew a fondness for Kabu. As such, she hopes that Kabu won't do anything to tick her off here like how Nessa had done with the less than favorable vibes she gave off. But Dawn had confidence that Kabu would be a good, reasonable man when she and the others meet him in Motostoke. As such, it was with interest in what all laid ahead of them in the future did the reborn trainers set off down the road to continue their Galar gym challenge tour.

After getting through the mine between Hulburry and the Motostoke Outskirts, the reborn trainers arrived in said Motostoke Outskirts. Looking up at the sky as they came out of the mine, Dawn said, "If we go straight from here to Motostoke, we'll get there in time to check into the hotel for the night."

"I remember hearing," Mina began, "That Kabu's gym was considered something of a roadblock in the Galar gym challenge, and that a good few people give up on the challenge due to failing to get over Kabu."

Pounding a hand into his fist, Kenny said, "Well I'd like to see Kabu give Dawn or Trip or I a hard time. We have the power of cringe and moxie on our side! We're all going to go all the wa-"

*rustle*

Kenny stopped short when he and the others heard some grass rustling nearby. They all turned to look to see what it was that was about to come out as them from the grass, but it turned out to just be a wild Impidimp. It scampered up to the reborn trainers and looked up at them. It then suddenly tried making a jump at Dawn while looking like it wanted to grab her hat, but Dawn skillfully jumped back to get out of the way as Impidimp landed. "Oi, that Impidimp tried to steal my hat!" Dawn said, "Why I oughta-"

"Myde use Flash Cannon!" Trip said as he sent his named Empoleon out, prompting it to conjure and cast a Flash Cannon that blasted right into the Impidimp, knocking it out when the force of the attack sent it flying into a nearby road sign. After Impidimp fell to the ground, Trip took out a spare Pokéball, expanded it, and threw it at the Impidimp, successfully capturing it."

After Trip had caught the Impidimp, Dawn said, "You caught the Impidimp that tried stealing my hat?"

"Impidimp fully evolves into Grimmsnarl which is a pretty cool Pokémon," Trip remarked, "Anyway, Imma name Impidimp here Eva."

Mina looked a bit confused. "Don't you usually check genders first before giving nicknames?"

"The Impidimp line is one-hundred percent male, Mina," Trip explained, "I know full well that Eva is a boy." After the kerfuffle with the now dubbed Eva who was sent to Oak's lab, the reborn trainers continued on their way to Motostoke, hoping to get there before the sun sets and night is fully settled in. They would like some light to be out before they retire for the night, and Dawn at least planned to take a shower if possible to wash away the sweat and weariness. Dawn was also planning on trying to get the others to wanna freshen up before bed as well, but she's not so sure how well she'll succeed in that department.

Maybe Dawn can convince Mina to help her encourage the boys to shower after they get into a hotel room.

The following morning, the reborn trainers had time before Kabu was ready to accept a challenge from Kenny, so after Dawn had the boys freshen up (they did indeed opt to wait until morning), they all went down to the hotel dining room where complementary breakfast was served. It was there that they were met up by Rose and Oleana, who seemed to be waiting for them. "What's the sitch?" Kenny asked as he and the others approached Rose and Oleana.

"The battles you all had against Nessa have really upped the rating of televised battles here in Galar," Rose said, "We're already making up for the fact that ratings for the current World Coronation Series aren't as high as anticipated!"

"The battle that Sinnoh Champion Dawn had against Nessa was particularly popular," Oleana remarked, "As it showed Dawn defeating Nessa's water Pokémon using only fire Pokémon. Using a dual fire rock type against two water types, and a dual fire bug type against a water type that's part rock type. Dawn had battled at a very severe type disadvantage the whole time, and she STILL won flawlessly."

Shrugging, Dawn said, "Some attitude Nessa had when we had that dinner meeting at The Captain's Table rubbed me the wrong way."

"Well I hope for Kabu's sake he doesn't do or say anything to elicit a similar response," Rose remarked, "He's a good, respectable man."

"I try to do my best, Chairman," an older male voice called out, making Rose and everyone else turn to see Kabu come walking in. "I came here because I wanted to greet Dawn Berlitz and her companions," Kabu explained, "As well as express praise that I have for Dawn for how-"

"-She had lost the excess weight she had in the latest Kenny Harris Studios movie," Mina finished, a dry and monotone look on her face.

Kabu, with a surprised look on his face, said, "Err, umm, yes that is exactly what I was going to say. Young lady, how did you-"

"Kabu, sir," Trip said, "You are FAR from the first person who thought that my sister had for real gotten really fat and then lost the weight, and at the rate these incidents have happened I'm doubting you'll be the last."

Gesturing to Dawn, Kabu asked, "Then how-"

"She used a fat suit for those roles," Kenny interrupted, "And yeah, I'm totally going to have to start using disclaimers at the beginning of movies I make where I have a thin actor or actress use a fat suit."

Gesturing to Kabu, Rose said, "Don't be embarrassed, Kabu. Oleana, and even Leon, made the same mistake."

Dawn was a tad annoyed that Kabu had mistakenly thought she had for real gotten fat but then lost the weight, but she let it go because it was an honest mistake on Kabu's part; a testament to just how good Kenny's skills in applying movie make-up are. Also, Kabu really was far from the first, and Dawn had a feeling that Trip would ended up being proven right on his assessment of Kabu not being the last. The most that the reborn trainers could do for now was begin the process of Dawn, Trip, and Kenny battling Kabu to earn badges from his gym.

Kabu, despite his mistake, was going to see mercy from Dawn.

...

Kenny had his battle with Kabu first and, as expected, Kenny won. Kabu also used Ninetails, Arcanine, and Centiskorch, with the Centiskorch being Gigantimaxed. That still didn't do anything to keep Kenny from bringing the cringe. Kenny ended up sweeping Kabu's entire team using only Godzilla, his named Tyranitar, who was Dynamaxed against the Gigantimaxed Centiskorch. The type advantage against Kabu's fire types (made even stronger against the dual fire bug Centiskorch) that the named Tyranitar had helped Kenny to nab the win.

After Kenny was Trip who fought Kabu later in the day after his Pokémon had all had a chance to rest and recover. Trip also used a type that's super effective against Kabu's fire Pokémon, but whereas Kenny used rock, Trip used water. Trip took out Kabu's Ninetails and Arcanine with Suzaku, his named Primarina, before swapping in his named Blastoise Tumbler to Dynamax against Kabu's Gigantimaxed Centiscorch. Centiskorch fell in battle to the named Blastoise, and as such Trip had been able to earn himself a Fire Badge from the Motostoke gym.

After Kabu and his team were able to rest for the night, he had his battle with Dawn the following morning. Dawn had used Shadow, her named West Sea Gastrodon, to take out both Kabu's Ninetails and Kabu's Arcanine, then she swapped Shadow out to send in Souji, her named Rampardos, who was Dynamaxed to counter Kabu's Centiskorch who was Gigantimaxed. One Max Rockfall from the named Rampardos had defeated the Gigantimaxed Centiskorch, and as such Dawn had won her battle against Kabu and had earned for herself the Fire Badge.

With their business in Motostoke complete, the reborn trainers got ready to head out to go through part of the Wild Area in order to reach Hammerlocke. Before they left, they were met up by Kabu, who was accompanied by Milo and Nessa, who wished them luck in their journey through Galar to earn the badges from the rest of the gyms in the region. Nessa also said something about Dawn and the others needing to be ready in case Raihan, the gym leader in Hammerlocke, comes over to greet the lot of them when they arrived in his city.

Raihan, according to Milo, is the overall strongest gym leader in Galar, and the only trainer in Galar considered to be strong enough to serve as a rival to Leon the Galar Champion. Raihan is also the last gym leader that Dawn and the boys will have to go up against when challenging the Galarian gyms (the gym leaders in Galar have to be challenged and beaten in a set order), and that Raihan's use of dragon Pokémon makes him very formidable. Again, a testament to how Raihan is considered strong enough to serve as a rival to Leon.

The reborn trainers thanked the gym leaders for their time and words before heading off. They still had some traveling to do to reach Hammerlocke, although Kabu stopped them before they left to warn them about some bad weather in the northern half of the Wild Area. The reborn trainers kept in mind the warning about the less than agreeable weather before heading off to continue their travels. If anything, the reborn trainers can just fly straight the rest of the way to Hammerlocke, but they first wanted to check out what all the northern half of the Wild Area had.

It was raining rather strong as the reborn trainers made their way through the northern half of the Wild Area. "Hey Dawn," Mina said, "Can't you call out Kurumu and have it clear the rain away with its ability?"

"I don't have Kurumu on hand at the moment," Dawn replied, at least grateful she and everyone else in the group had umbrellas. Gently shaking her head, Dawn said, "Well anyway, we ought to head on up to Hammerlocke as soon as possible. Depending on when we get there, we may have to crash at a hotel for the night before we can made the trip to Stow-On-Side to challenge the gym leader there."

"I forget," Kenny said, "Who's the gym leader for Stow-On-Side's gym?"

Shrugging, Dawn said, "It varied in our previous lives depending on if you played Sword or Shield. Sword is Bea, Shield is Allister." Turning to look at her brother, Dawn asked, "What do you think, Tri-"

"I wanna try and catch a Cufant or a Copperajah," Trip interrupted, "I got it that they can be found in this area, so Imma keep an eye out for one."

Dawn gave an amused hum of a chuckle. "Ah yes, you and your preference for steel types."

Turning to look at Dawn, Mina said, "Well are there any Pokémon here in the northern part of the Wild Area you'd be interested in nabbing?"

After giving it a bit of thought, Dawn said, "...Actually, yeah and since it's raining all over the place, I bet I can come across it more easily."

...

Deciding to act on her spur of the moment interest, Dawn led the rest of the group in the direction of the Giant's Bed area of the Wild Area's northern half. After they got across the water (they surfed over on Pokémon), Dawn kept a vigilant eye out for the Pokémon that she sought to catch for herself, a Pokémon that she felt would fit her rotation of Pokémon very well, especially after she got it fully evolved; it would be a very powerful, not to mention very fast (if Dawn's memory on it from her previous life still held here) addition to her selection.

Eventually, Dawn found the Pokémon she sought, but it surprised her a bit. Dawn was actually looking for a Dreepy which, when fully evolved, would be a Dragapult. However, Dawn instead first came across a Drakloak, the middle stage that evolves from Dreepy and into Dragapult. After a quick scuffle where she used her named Totem Kommo-o Tambourine, Dawn was able to wear down and capture the Drakloak. It was a male with an Adamant nature and the Clear Body ability. Dawn was very happy to have caught Drakloak, and she named him Jet.

After that business, the reborn trainers were done there, so they made their way back across the water and made a beeline for the gates leading into Hammerlocke. But when they got there, they spotted a truck parked outside near the gate leading into Hammerlocke, and the guys driving the truck were outside and trying to fend off a wild Copperajah who was harassing them. Looking in the bed of the truck, the reborn trainers spotted that there was a lot of Pokémon food in the truck bed. That made it clear why the wild Copperajah was harassing the men.

The reborn trainers rushed in to help save the men and the Pokémon food that they were trying to bring to Hammerlocke. Trip sent out Myde to sweep the Copperajah away with Surf, pushing it back and giving the men some relief from being attacked by a wild Pokémon. Trip had Myde wear the wild Copperajah down until it collapsed from exhaustion. Trip took the opportunity to throw an Ultra Ball at the Copperajah, successfully capturing it. It was a jolly nature female with the Sheer Force ability, and Trip ended up naming her Natalya.

After things were settled, the two men thanked the reborn trainers for the save. "We were able to keep any of the Pokémon food in our truck from ending up as lunch for that Copperajah, so now we won't get into any trouble for bringing in a tampered with load of Pokémon food," the first man said.

"Well we saw you were in danger and wanted to help out," Dawn replied, "Also my brother said he'd been wanting to catch a Cufant or Copperajah anyway, so two things were done for the price of one."

The first man was about to speak up, but stopped short when the second man said, "Hey wait, you kids are Dawn Berlitz and her companions! We've seen you on the telly having won battles against Milo and Nessa!"

"Oh shoot, that's right!" the first man said, "Since you guys are following the structured path for challenging gym leaders here in Galar, at least that's what the battles aired on the telly are saying, you ought to be headed for Stow-on-side next." Gesturing to the reborn trainers, the first man went on, "That said, it's the first of two gyms you'll come across here in Galar with two gym leaders. Bea, a fighting type specialist, and Allister, a ghost type specialist. You may have to plan accordingly for your battles depending on who you face."

Dawn nodded her head once in thanks, and after that the reborn trainers followed after the mens' truck into Hammerlocke. It would be a city that they would be coming back to later, but for the time being they were simply passing through. Even so, the reborn trainers were looking forward to what all laid ahead of them in the city where Raihan, the strongest gym leader in Galar and the only trainer in Galar considered strong enough to serve as a rival to Leon the Galar Champion, made his home. It was going to be a rather interesting pit stop in their Galar gym challenge tour.

Getting into Hammerlocke, the reborn trainers were glad to have escaped the rain from the Wild Area, but looking up at the sky above they knew that they were going to have to rest in Hammerlocke for the night. "Let's just find a hotel to check into for the night," Trip said, "We ought to dry off from the rain, and I would like the chance to freshen up from the road."

"Same here," Dawn said, "I really would rather not stink of the road if I can help it."

Shrugging, Mina said, "What's wrong, you don't want a respectable level of girl stank?"

"You ought to shower too, Mina," Dawn scowled.

Mina was about to speak up, but stopped short when she and the other reborn trainers heard a crowd of excited persons come rushing over. They all turned to see that a stampede of battle fans were rushing over to them, and Mina was able to call out her Dragonite and hop on to go straight up into the air before the crowd rushed the rest of the reborn trainers. Dawn and the boys struggled to get the fans to settle down, and they only backed off when a commanding male voice called out, "Yo, give the special gym challengers some breathing room!"

The crowd parted as Raihan came walking on in. Looking up at Mina and her Dragonite for a moment, Raihan looked back down at Dawn and the boys. "She okay?" Raihan asked as he pointed up at Mina.

"My girlfriend doesn't do well with crowds swarming around her," Kenny explained.

Raihan gave a single, understanding nod. "Fair enough. Anyway, I figured that you guys would be crossing through Hammerlocke eventually, especially as I'll be one of the gym leaders you'll be facing. Just to warn you, I'm not the strongest gym leader in Galar for nothing. Heck, I even got into the Masters Eight in the current World Coronation Series season, but I got eliminated in the first round by Leon."

"He's a strong Champion, from what we've gleamed," Trip remarked.

Nodding once, Raihan said, "True. He's probably the strongest trainer in the world, I bet." Clenching a fist, Raihan said, "But that'll change the day Leon's winning streak is broken, and you're looking at the guy who will do that breaking!"

"Press X to doubt," Kenny muttered to himself under his breath, too quietly for Raihan to hear.

Gesturing to Raihan, Dawn said, "I got it that, due to us having to follow the same structured path that people traditionally taking the Galar gym challenge have to take, we'll be battling you last. That said, I'm looking forward to facing off against you."

Raihan gave Dawn an amused smirk. "The girl who beat the former Sinnoh Champion and became the new and current Sinnoh Champion in turn is looking forward to facing me. Well now, it looks like I'll be having a bit of fun when you guys get back to Hammerlocke with seven Galar gym badges each." Pointing at Dawn, Raihan went on, "You're a damn impressive trainer, Dawn. What's also impressive about you is how you had lost the weight you had in the latest Kenny Harris Studios movie."

"She wore a fat suit for that role," Kenny said dryly.

Raihan, with a mildly embarrassed look on his face, said, "...Oh."

Sighing, Dawn remarked, "Relax, Raihan, you ain't the first person to have made that mistake. Many others before you were under the impression that I was for real gaining and losing weight. Even Leon made the mistake."

After hearing that Leon had also thought that Dawn had for real been fat, Raihan's expression relaxed a little bit. "...I'm catching up to Leon." Looking to the reborn trainers, Raihan went on, "Anyway, I'm guessing that you all are gonna wanna find a hotel here in Hammerlocke to crash at for the night, unless you plan to push through to Stow-on-side."

"We're gonna crash for the night in Hammerlocke, yeah," Trip replied.

Nodding once, Raihan said, "Fair enough." Raihan had to first shoo away the rest of the crowd before Mina was willing to come back down, and after Mina landed on the ground, Raihan led the reborn trainers over. He led them over to a hotel located near the Hammerlocke gym, then took off after wishing them the best of luck on the rest of their journey through Galar up until they reach his gym. After the reborn trainers got checked in, they proceeded to head up to their hotel room and get settled in for the night, intending to rest up for the next morning.

...

"So yeah," Dawn said, "I think that, due to how the Stow-on-side gym has two gym leaders, we may have to wait until Rose and Oleana show up to talk to us before we try to challenge the Stow-on-side gym." Folding her arms over her chest, Dawn went on, "I get the feeling that Rose and especially Oleana have some sort of plan in store for when we take on the Stow-on-side gym."

"Really kind of wish that bitch in white didn't decide things for us," Kenny spoke up, "It took away a bit of freedom from us to decide how to go about things. I like to march to the beat of my own drum."

"Oleana is obsessed with upping ratings as much as possible," Trip said, "Pokémon battles here in Galar are one of, if not THE, biggest televised events. We aren't just trainers here, we're also celebrity athletes who have to put on a show for an audience. You do know how we've had to deal with crowds swarming us a couple of times so far, don't you?"

"Those crowds can munch my butt!" Mina called from the bathroom, the sounds of a running shower also coming from there.

Dawn gently rolled her eyes as she thought about the particular situation that came with the Stow-on-side gym. There would be two gym leaders, Bea and Allister, and Dawn and the boys would only challenge one each. But the one that they challenged respectively was yet to be determined, and because of that Dawn had to come up with two plans on how to go about battling the Stow-on-side gym, depending on if it's Bea she has to battle or if it's Allister she has to battle. Dawn was kind of hoping that she could come up with a plan that would work in both cases, regardless of which gym leader it is that she battles for her fourth Galar gym badge.

As such, Dawn went to sleep thinking about what all she could do for taking on the Stow-on-side gym. She had a bit of time to come up with a plan that would work, either two separate plans where there'd be one each for Bea and Allister, or a single plan that would work for both of them. Dawn was hoping to come up with a general plan that would work for both so she wouldn't be caught flat-footed, and she was thinking of using Kenny and Trip having to go first and second respectively to scout things out AND figure out what she herself would be doing. But all of that depended on what Rose and (especially) Oleana had planned for when the reborn trainers got to Stow-on-side to take on the fourth Galar gym.

At the very least, Dawn hoped she'd be allowed to rotate her party before her battle at the Stow-on-side gym.

...

The following morning, the reborn trainers got up, freshened up, got breakfast, then hit the road out of Hammerlocke to make their way to Stow-on-side. Kenny as the group walked proclaimed that, regardless of which gym leader he fought, he would bring the wrath of moxie and cringe down upon their heads and score an epic win the likes of which will be sung about by bards for generations to come. Mina said that she was looking forward to seeing Kenny make Bea or Allister (depending on who he got) kneel before him in defeat on the pitch in the Stow-on-side gym.

Trip said that, regardless of what gym leader he was slated to fight, he'd win. As for Dawn, she had come up with a plan that ought to work well for her regardless of which gym leader between Bea and Allister she was slated to battle against. As such, the reborn trainers felt confidnet as they made their way out of Hammerlocke and on the road to Stow-on-side, where they would continue their journey through the Galar region as Dawn and the boys sought to earn and collect the gym badges that were offered to winners at the Galar gyms.

END, CHAPTER TWO-HUNDRED AND FORTY-FOUR

Author's notes;

This chapter manages to squeeze in a lot; Dawn and the boys clear the Hulbury gym, then the Motostoke gym, they go through the northern half of the Wild Area where Dawn catches a Drakloak and Trip catches a Copperajah, they make it into Hammerlocke, and they are greeted by Raihan before he shows them to a hotel where they're able to crash for the night before continuing their journey through Galar. Things may seem a bit rushed, but they're focusing solely on the gyms right now; things will be picking up when the World Coronation Series becomes a thing the reborn trainers have to worry about.

Anyway, the next chapter will be seeing the reborn trainers make their way into Stow-on-side, where they will contend with the Stow-on-side gym leaders Bea and Allister. The reborn trainers will also be meeting a certain someone who will have more significance later on in the story. But how said person, as well as who said person is, will be having a significant role in the story will be a subject matter that will be explored later on as the story progresses. The Galar gym challenge tour will continue to go on strong in the next chapter, but until then take care.
