Jin Fengju deliberately kept their pace slow as he studied Fu Qiuning's shadow on the ground. His fists clenched unconsciously as he made secret vows to himself. It was at that moment he realised that this woman had, at some unknown time, entered his heart. Without his knowing, she had firmly occupied an immovable position inside of him.

When they reached Health & Longevity Court, Madam Fang and Madam Jiang as well as the other women were already there. They were all very shocked to see Jin Fengju and Fu Qiuning enter together. The ones who were most surprised were Jiang Wanying, Concubine Xu and his other concubines. However, Jin Fengju pretended not to notice the tension, smiled and said, "Since I am free today, and found that the mother and children were done with their work at Night Breeze Pavilion, I brought them here. Seeing how Old Ancestor has eaten many of Qiuning's things, surely it is reasonable to treat them to a meal? Since I have brought them here, I do hope that Old Ancestor would not be stingy and demand this grandson to pay for the food, right?"

"All of you, just listen to that mouth of his. How dare he ruin my good reputation?" Old Madam Jin was obviously very happy. She spared Fu Qiuning and the children from the formal greetings and ordered the servants to bring more seats in. Then, she addressed Jiang Wanying, Concubine Xu and the rest, "If you are busy, you may leave. I shall play some cards here."

[1] She turned to Madam Fang, "Your husband is not back yet. If you have any work needed to get done, just have your daughter-in-law do it. Stay and entertain me for a while. Your sister-in-law (Madam Jiang) is always praying to Buddha around this time. Since this is a great moral service, I shall not stop her. Let her chant more Sutras, consider it as her chanting on my behalf and earning me a little merit."

Everyone laughed. Jiang Wanying stepped forward to say, "Old Ancestor, you mustn't be so partial. I am busy every day, surely it's fine for me to give myself some leisure time? Let this granddaughter-in-law play a few rounds with you, so as not to let others stir up trouble"

(Gumi: No idea what JWY trying to imply).

Jin Fengju smiled, "You all enjoy yourselves here. I need to visit my brother-in-law. He had friends visiting and had been calling for me to come over for a while now but I have been too busy lately. However, I can no longer push off the visit." He turned to Fu Qiuning, "There's no need for you to rush off so early. It's rare for you to visit this place. You should visit more and accompany the Old Madam for a game or two. After all, you have benefited too, and therefore should earn your meals here, right?"

At this, everyone laughed (again, ugh). Old Madam jokingly spat a few times with a laugh. Jin Fengju laughed heartily (everyone laughed, let's all laugh. Ha ha ha) and left. Helpless and trapped by the Old Madam and her devious grandson, Fu Qiuning could only sit in place. Madam Jiang also expressed an interest to join in the fun today (Gee, I wonder why). Thus, that day's card game participants consisted of Old Madam Jin, Madam Jiang, Madam Fang and an old female relative.

[1] Old Madam smiled at Jiang Wanying, "Go and watch your mother-in-law's cards. Qiu girl will look after mine." Thus, Fu Qiuning was directed to sit next to Old Madam Jin while Jiang Wanying was made to sit behind Madam Jiang.

An hour into the game later, Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying had to pull out. Old Madam Jin had had a great time. She laughed and said, "It's been a long time since I had such a nice time. Enough, you may leave, I am tired. Qiu girl, stay and have a chat with me."

At this, Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying left. When the two of them reached Madam Jiang's room, Jiang Wanying's eyes reddened and she tugged at Madam Jiang's sleeves with tearful eyes. "Aunt, did you see how cousin had… had… yesterday, the wind was so strong, but that did not stop him from running over to Fu'shi's room. Fine, that is his privilege, but why did he have to bring that household over to greet the Old Ancestor? Isn't this just slapping me in the face? As she is Cousin's official wife, am I to suffer the fate of a discriminated secondary wife? What am I? Clearly, even the Old Madam is confused too. Why is she letting Fu'shi charm her like that? She keeps protecting that woman and pushing her to the forefront. Clearly, that woman is preparing herself to enter the main courtyard. If that happens, I… do I still have a position in this marquisate?"

Madam Jiang was also quite annoyed with her son. She patted Jiang Wanying on the hand and said, "My dear, don't be afraid. You still have your aunt on your side. It is very clear to me that your cousin is reluctant to divorce that woman and is now running off to Night Breeze Pavilion all the time. Who knows what kind of ecstasy soup that vixen has fed him, to the point that he is so determined to raise that Fu woman? I ask you now, have they shared a room?"

Jiang Wanying sobbed, "Wh- what should we do, ah? Auntie, just look at my cousin. Isn't he making plans to move her into the inner court? Though I have set some plans in place, they would only show results after a few months. I'm afraid, by that time she would have entered the inner court in a grand manner. Once Father-in-law returns… Mother-in-law should know that he likes the scholarly types most and often said that a hero's background should never be questioned. Back then, when Cousin ignored those two children, Father-in-law disapproved. If he sees just how promising and likeable those children are… W-wouldn't it be even more impossible to drive her out?"

Madam Jiang pondered over this seriously, "You're right. However, just how are we to drive her away? You and I are merely women. In this family, so long as Fengju is around, we cannot force him to divorce her, ah. Otherwise, he would have listened to me all those months ago and given her the divorce letter. No, we must come up with a plan that would make Fengju dissatisfied with her. Wanying, you have always been very clever. This is not the time to panic, think carefully. See if there's anything or any situation we could turn to our advantage?"

Now that matters have come to this, it was their only way. Luckily, she had her aunt on her side no matter what. Jiang Wanying sought some comfort in that as she thought hard. She wiped her tears and said, "Yes, I understand, auntie. I will go back and think over the matter a little more. In fact, I am not moved by jealousy alone. Cousin is an outstanding person, therefore, it is inevitable that many would adore him. If he were to accept new people, I would definitely not object. However, that Fu'shi, her identity is too unfit for our family. Not to mention, did she even have the proper social status to be Cousin's official wife? Back then, she was stuffed into this house to humiliate us. If Cousin really got together with her, wouldn't it just invite people to mock us? Mock the Jin Marquisate for having no backbone? That we would uphold the bastard daughter of the Zhenjiang Prince as the official wife?"

"My dear, you are very right. Isn't this the very reason why I wish to have her driven away? Otherwise, how could I bring myself to commit such a sin? Amitabha." Madam Jiang said somewhat helplessly as she put her hands together in prayer. Seeing her mother-in-law's white face, Jiang Wanying knew that she had been moved by her argument. Thus, with her mother-in-law's blessing, she left.

However, even until she had returned to Clear Soft Pavilion, no great idea struck her. Irritated, Jiang Wanying was pacing about in her room when Qiu Xia lifted the doorway curtain. The maid said, "Madam, it should be time to hand out the monthly allowance. Since we have delayed them for a few days, people from Concubine Xu and Concubine Huo have been sent to inquire about it. As they could not see you easily, they bade this maid ask for Madam's instructions."

Jiang Wanying sneered, "Who are they putting on this 'poor me' show for? Do they think that I don't know about their dowry outside? Each month, they easily collect over a hundred silver taels from various businesses, so how could the monthly 10 taels be anything to them? They are clearly trying to make trouble for me. Fine, you give the order, give out the monthly allowance. After all, I have earned enough these few days."

[1] After Qiu Xia left, she slowly got up from the bed and looked out the window.

"Monthly allowance. Even though it's just a few silver taels, those lowly maids would only receive 500 coins each month. They probably never even touched silver. Still, no matter how little, once that small stream dries up, they have no way to survive." Jiang Wanying muttered to herself as she relished the power of life and death in her hands.

Suddenly, her expression stiffened. [2] A sudden thought had struck her. Just then, Qiu Xia came in with a notebook in hand. "Madam, the allowance would be given out according to this list. Would Madam please have a look and…" her voice trailed off as Jiang Wanying stared at her with dazed eyes.

Jiang Wanying suddenly sat down and said, "Qiu Xia, let me ask you. In a household of 5 people. Without a scrap of food reserve or money, how long do you think they can live?

Hearing this question, Qiu Xia became confused. She said, "5 people? With no access to money or clothing? No silver or copper coins? How could they live, ah? Surely they would have died from starvation within half a month?"

"That's right, they would not survive past half a month," Jiang Wanying's hand clenched into a fist. She thumped the table once and stared at Qiu Xia with wolf-like eyes, freaking out the maid a little. Her mistress continued in a sinister voice, "If that's the case, then how did they survive until now? Over 6 years have passed. You tell me, just how did they survive?"

"Madam… just who is Madam talking about, ah? Surely… surely that's too ingenious…" Qiu Xia was not actually stupid, but faced with her mistress' freakish eyes, she was suddenly struck dumb. Her brain became sluggish at Jiang Wanying's glare.

"Stupid thing, I'm talking about the residents of Night Breeze Pavilion. Those 5 people at Night Breeze Pavilion. Just how did they survive until now?"

"Oh, Madam is talking about them, ah?" Qiu Xia sighed with relief. Then, her expression became thoughtful, "That's right, ah. Madam is right, before this, the Master ignored them completely, seemingly having forgotten about them." She went quiet and looked around furtively before coming over to Jiang Wanying's side to whisper, "The Master thought they had at least some allowance and supplies, though not much, but still enough to survive. However, he must not know that Madam never intended to let them live. The allowance and supplies have never been given out. If that's the case, just how did those women and children survive until now?"

Gumihou: Everyone laughs at Old Madam Jin's every little joke. You can tell by the number of people laughing at their lame jokes just who the powerful people are in a room. Also, yes, I don't like the Old Ancestor. Gumi despises hypocritical people. Jin Fengju is more or less made in her image.

Jiang Wanying is created as a plausible villain. She is selfish, spoilt, haughty, proud and used to getting her own way. However, she had also been short-changed by life (or White Pear Flower). The flaws in her character are obvious and made us dislike her. However, Gumi is also sad for her. Jiang Wanying was smart enough to know the kind of woman Jin Fengju desired and tried her best to shove herself into that box. She is both sensitive and intelligent, a terrible combination when in love with a man who saw her as little more than a tool to humiliate another and a way to cement a relationship between two families. She also knows that Old Madam did not like her. She is sharp enough to know almost immediately that Jin Fengju was interested in Fu Qiuning.

So long as she has feelings for Jin Fengju, she will never be happy.

Jiang Wanying, Gumi sincerely hopes that you transmigrate or be reborn into a better life.

Jiang Wanying sneered, "That's right. Even if they fed on grass, roots and tree bark, it cannot sustain them for 6 weeks, let alone 6 years. Moreover, in those 6 years, they never came to me for their montly allocation. Curious, isn't it? Just where did they get their living supplies? Even if they depend on the trees and gardens for a bit of food, how did they get their hands on cloth for clothes? Though the clothes they wore were not new, they were not several years old either."

"This maid is stupid and begs Madam to grant her wisdom," Qiu Xia immediately put on an attentive expression. She knew that allowing this mistress to show off her cleverness was the best way to flatter her. Sure enough, the corners of Jiang Wanying's lips curled up. She beamed proudly as she drawled, "Clearly there is only one explanation. They must have found ways to make money. Perhaps by selling their embroideries, or those fragrant potted plants, or other similar things. Once they have the money at hand, it would be spent on food and clothing."

"Madam is right, looks like this is the only explanation," Qiu Xia quickly raised her thumbs in praise. Jiang Wanying looked even more ecstatic, "As the official wife of the Young Marquis, to actually sell things privately? More importantly, to even sell her hand-sewn embroidery to the public? Hahaha, she can forget about ever getting a foothold in this marquisate."

Qiu Xia nodded like a chicken pecking rice, "Madam is right, only… how do we prove it?"

"This will not be simple. You, come over here," Jiang Wanying waved a hand and Qiu Xia quickly scuttled over. As Jiang Wanying spoke, she nodded several times. Finally, she straightened up and said, "Do not worry, Madam. This maid will carry out your orders."

"En, be cautious. Make sure no rumour gets out. Otherwise, forget about not serving by my side, you can get out of the Jin Marquisate," Jiang Wanying carelessly threatened. Qiu Xia quickly acquiesced and ran off to carry out her errands.

"Fu Qiuning, ah, Fu Qiuning. This time, even if your hands reach the skies and Cousin does his very best to protect you, I'm afraid the sin of 'Private Business Ruins the Marquisate's Good Name' is more than enough to drive you out and ruin your reputation~" after drawing out that last line, Jiang Wanying laughed happily to herself.

"Madam, this is the money we have collected from selling embroidery for the past few months." Yu Jie came into Night Breeze Pavilion and handed over two silver taels to Fu Qiuning. [1] As she handed the money to her mistress, she added, "Since we now have the favour of the Young Marquis, all food, clothing and other expenses are taken care of. There's no need to risk our reputation for this money. So, why hasn't Madam given it up, yet?" Yu Jie had been puzzling over that matter for some time now and still could not understand her mistress's actions.

"He sends us all kinds of things, but have you ever seen him send money to us?" Fu Qiuning stroked the silver taels in her hand, as though they were precious treasures. She sighed and said, "At first, I did not quite understand it, thinking that he understood our circumstances and would know what to do. I had not imagined that he would go so far as to not spare us even a single coin. He must have also understood our shameful circumstances and the embarrassment of not having even a coin to reward the messengers and servants. Why do you think we kept getting more and more things, and yet were given not a single silver tael at all? I now realised that this was all deliberate. He deliberately used this method to force me into a corner and is waiting for me to open my mouth and ask him for money."

"Why would he do this, ah? If the Young Marquis wanted Madam to ask him for things, surely it would be better for him to not give us anything at all?" Yu Jie tilted her head to the side, still not understanding the situation.

"He had not sunk to that level as yet. After all, I have already raised his son and daughter, children with no blood relationship to me," Fu Qiuning sighed again and looked at Yu Jie. "Enough about that, you won't understand. It's fine if you don't understand. As the saying goes, 'Ignorance is bliss', these words turned out to be very true."

"Madam, this maid has something to say, b-but is not sure if it is appropriate…" Yu Jie stared at Fu Qiuning for a moment, biting her lip. After some time, she continued, "In- in fact… the Young Marquis, recently, towards Madam is… he is quite affectionate but, but Madam is being very indifferent. Madam says that the Young Marquis is trying to force you into a corner, is it…"

Fu Qiuning cut her off by saying, "Enough about that. Since you have no idea whether to speak up or not, just don't speak it. I understand the situation well. Don't you think our lives are pretty good now? There is no need for us to conduct business anymore. From now on, be sure to remember that the spring flowers, summer potted plants, autumn fruits and winter embroidery are all leisure activities in this courtyard. In the future, we may sell some of our embroidery outside again. After all, Third Brother Zhang is a trustworthy person. Therefore, we should not encounter trouble from that side. However, there are more and more eyes on me right now. With so many wishing to get rid of me, it is only a matter of time before someone casts their suspicions on my head. Therefore, from today onwards, the things within Night Breeze Pavilion cannot be sold outside."

When she was done speaking, she stood up and walked to the window. As she stared into the garden, she sighed and said, "It's been nearly seven years, hasn't it? Ever since I moved into Night Breeze Pavilion, without my knowing, seven years have passed just like that. We depended on ourselves for food and clothing, and even managed to save twenty or thirty taels. In the eyes of the Young Marquis, this money would barely make a satisfying sound when thrown into the river. However, this little bit of money is our hope, our confidence. Now that Feng'er and Jiao'er have caught their father's eyes, there is no need for me to worry about them. As for you, me and Aunt Yu, this money will be reserved for our old age. When we can no longer move, it would serve as our coffin money."

Yu Jie's heart thumped. She finally understood what Fu Qiuning had been telling her all this time. Her mistress's message was clear: Until the end of her life, she does not intend to forgive the Young Marquis. When old age comes and her looks decline, when the Young Marquis finally loses interest in her, she would use this money for retirement and burial arrangements.

She sighed, as a maid, Yu Jie could only helplessly hope for a blessing for her mistress, before retreating.

In a blink of an eye, the winter season came. The days were getting colder until one morning, snow floated down from the sky and the world turned white.

Jin Fengju came out of the hall, and was about to get into a sedan chair in front of the palace gate to go home when someone called him. "Fengju, do stay for a bit." He turned and saw Prince Lie walking over to him, a wide smile on his face.

"This lowly official greets Your Highness," Jin Fengju greeted the prince ceremoniously. Privately, he thought: Just why did Prince Lie call out to me? It's not like he doesn't know whose faction I am with. What is his intention?

[1] Unsure, but unable to just leave, he maintained a warm and gentle smile on his face. Quietly, he remained guarded.

"What's all this 'lowly officials' and 'your highness'? You are my Sixth brother's brother-in-law. I often hear him call you by name, therefore, this king [2] shall naturally follow his lead. Alas, as you are well regarded by the emperor and quite busy with all kinds of errands, it is difficult to get to know you. It's rare for the emperor to let you off so early like this. Therefore, you must not go home, you must accompany me."

Jin Fengju smiled and said, "This lowly official is ashamed to be so highly praised by Your Highness. However, our grandmother caught a cold today and this lowly official is worried and must hurry back to inquire after her health. Do allow this lowly official to entertain Your Highness some other day as compensation."

"Fengju, don't tell me you only give face to my Sixth brother? Are you reluctant to give me face?" Prince Lie laughed as he put an arm around Jin Fengju's shoulder. Acting as though they were intimate friends, he leaned close to Jin Fengju's ear and whispered, "Let me tell you a secret, you should just agree and come with me. If you don't, well, I'm afraid you won't have the opportunity to see this good thing in my hand."

Jin Fengju was not used to this affectionate demeanour. Although he was young, he had always been mature and indifferent even towards his peers. Even when it came to his brother-in-law, Prince Rong, there was no real brotherly affection between them. Therefore, he could not help but felt annoyed and sternly said, "As a noble royal son, Your Highness should mind your manners. Please do not forget that Prince Rong was personally reprimanded by the emperor for drunken, disorderly and disobedient behaviour."

Prince Lie laughed, "It's fine, Emperor Father knows that I have always been fond of playing with swords and maces ever since I was a child, and I have spent many years in the army. A little rambunctious behaviour is expected of me. Enough with the nonsense, why don't you have a look at this thing first? Later, you can decide if you wish to accept an invitation to my banquet. What do you think?"

Hearing this, Jin Fengju had no choice but to agree. The 'thing' that Prince Lie was so excited to show him turned out to be a handkerchief. On the handkerchief were delicately embroidered flowers. The prince waved the handkerchief back and forth in front of Jin Fengju with a grin, "Well? Do you recognise this thing?"

"Isn't it just a handkerchief? What's so special about it?" Jin Fengju's eyebrows raised even as he made a show of studying the thing. However, he knew that there must be something odd about it. Otherwise, Prince Lie would not have behaved so mysteriously.

"The handkerchief is not that special, however, hehehe… the origin of this handkerchief is quite unique, ah. Moreover, it has some connection to you, Fengju. Well? How about that drink? If you don't want to come, you won't get to know the origin of this handkerchief and I'm afraid you'll regret it later when the reputation of the Jin Marquisate falls into ruins, ah."

"Your Highness, this lowly official has never liked to play jokes," Fengju stared at Prince Lie, his eyes burning.

Prince Lie also put his joking manner away, he turned solemn as he said, "Of course, this king knows. This king does like to play jokes, but, Fengju, have you ever seen this king joke with you?" Suddenly, the solemn façade disappeared under a smile and he said, "How about it? Are you going to accompany this king to White Phoenix House [3]?

Jin Fengju breathed in deeply before letting out his breath slowly, his eyes never leaving Prince Lie's. Prince Lie continued to smile at him. After a long while, Jin Fengju nodded, "Your Highness, please."

The two of them left, walking side by side just as Prince Rong stepped out of [4] Imperial Hall of Diligence and saw them. He had been reporting something privately to the emperor and happened to see Prince Lie and Jin Fengju walking away arm in arm. Suspicion immediately suffused his person. He thought: Fengju had never interacted with Fourth Brother or Eighth Brother before, so why do they look so intimate together? Could it be that they had coerced him into something? En, I should ask Brother-in-law about it later. See if this prince could be of any help.

Snow had been falling since morning, only stopping when evening came, covering everything in two inches of snow. Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao held hands together with Lu Hua and Jin Zhuan as the four of them rushed home. After tumbling through the front gate, they saw their mother waiting at the door and the children quickened their paces.

Although the snow within the courtyard had been swept away, it was still a little slippery. Yu Jie and Fu Qiuning had to caution them not to run before the children slowed down. Even so, Jin Changfeng cheerfully called out, "Mother, we don't have to go to school tomorrow. The teachers told us to stay home to avoid the slippery paths."

Gumihou: …for all his vaunted 'intelligence' Jin Fengju doesn't seem to react well when things are outside his control. This isn't actually an 'OOC moment'. There are precedents for this. Jin Fengju had been described by many people (mom, sister, servants) as being someone who 'has never been particularly influenced by emotions even when young'.

However.

Washerwoman incident – possibly raped when drunk. Reacted by cutting off all relationships with the woman, and later the twins when they were born, he refused to even acknowledge their existence. Overreaction? Perhaps. Then again, he was 12 or 13 at that time, and this may have influenced his future behaviour towards women

Original Fu Qiuning incident – forced into a political marriage that humiliated his entire family. Reacted by marrying lots of women in to snub the official wife. Overreaction? Perhaps. Then again, he was not the only one who suffered from this political marriage, his whole family did too. He was probably 16 or 17 here.

Falling for Fu Qiuning – suddenly having feels for a wife he had not even seen in years. This is not the issue, the issue is the woman actually *gasped* refused his charms! Reacted by chasing her harder, not even considering her feelings. A total asshat? Yup. Do we hate him for it? Totally.

Understandable?

… haahhh….

Yes, actually. This is again another 'out of his control' situation. This time, the lack of control came from within himself, not from outside conditions. However, his reaction is the same. Through excessive counter-reaction.

Prince Lie poking him – Jin Fengju lost his cool and visibly tried to regain control? Very possible, though this shows that the perfect image most people have of him was actually flawed.

Conclusion: He only has control over himself when he has control over the situation.

Readers: …Gumi, what's with all the excessive character analysis?

Gumi: …it's… an occupational hazard. It's how I know whether a character is OOC and exactly how to steer them back to the set character path. I don't have to like them to understand them. Let the record stand that I hate Jin Fengju and hope he gets struck by lightning, steps on dog poo on the way to an important event or slips on a seaweed while walking downstairs.

Fu Qiuning nodded, "As it should be." [1] She studied Lu Hua and Jin Zhuan, "Are the clothes warm enough? The two of you had been sick, so you need to have a good rest. It is getting rather cold now."

[1]

In fact, not long after Jin Zhuan and Lu Hua entered the clan school with Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, the two children ate something that made them suffer from terrible stomachaches and diarrhoea for over half a month. She guessed that they must have eaten some drugged food that nearly took their little lives away. It was only after much care that the two pulled through. Though she had her suspicions, there was nothing they could do. She had no real power in her hands and could not investigate the matter.

[1] Jin Fengju had been appearing in front of the emperor these past two days and only returned to the marquisate late at night. Moreover, he did not visit Night Breeze Pavilion, which meant the matter could only be left unresolved. Fu Qiuning could only warn Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao to be more careful in the future.

"It's not cold, the clothes that Madam gave us are very thick and warm. They have also been stuffed with new cotton, so they are really toasty and comfortable. We never had such lovely cotton clothes before." Jin Zhuan and Lu Hua beamed at Fu Qiuning. After patting the excess snow off themselves, Fu Qiuning quickly arranged for them to climb up the warm kang, and she even ordered Yu Jie to close the courtyard door.

Mother and children had just been chatting for a short while when Yu Jie's high-pitched scream was heard. Shocked, Fu Qiuning jumped up and ran to the door to investigate. She stepped out the door and nearly ran into Jin Fengju, who was dressed in a large cloak. His complexion was ash white and hard, and it was clear that the cold on his face had nothing to do with the weather.

"Lord Husband, why did you come when it is already so late?" Fu Qiuning's hand unconsciously clenched into a fist. Something must have happened. But what? She had always remained within Night Breeze Pavilion and had not done anything excessive. Had she been framed? How could she still be framed while she remained shut indoors?

Jin Fengju's chest was heaving, obviously panting with anger. His sharp eyes razed across the room, searing over the children piled on the kang. All four children were so frightened by his glare that they tumbled off the kang to stand in a stiff line. Four pairs of eyes stared up at him cautiously.

"Yu Jie, take the Young Master, Young Miss and those two to the study," Jin Fengju ordered.

[1] Yu Jie dare not disobey. She could only usher the children away, now and then casting a worried glance at Fu Qiuning.

[1] "Make sure Aunt Yu goes to the study too, I wish to speak with your Madam,"

"Just what is going on? Why are you so angry?" Fu Qiuning had managed to pull the façade of calmness over herself after a few deep breaths. She moved to pour tea for Jin Fengju.

"This thing, do you recall it?" Jin Fengju fiercely tossed something down.

[1] Fu Qiuning picked up the item. It was a handkerchief embroidered by her. Though she did not exclaim in surprise, the change in her expression was enough to give her away.

"So, this thing really came from here."

Jin Fengju's expression actually turned blue, and the veins on his forehead visibly throbbed. Suddenly, he seized the handkerchief and tore it in half. In a stern voice, he growled, "As my official wife, to actually let your personally embroidered work circulate in the market. Moreover, you even expose yourself and allow everyone to know? Do you know how much face my Jin Marquisate has lost because of this? Did you do this on the advice of your father to damage the reputation of our Marquisate? Fu Qiuning, ah, Fu Qiuning, all this talk about peace for a lifetime? Shelter within Night Breeze Pavilion? Was it for the sake of humiliating me so that our Jin Marquisate could no longer lift our heads?"

[Dude, lol]

Fu Qiuning clenched her own handkerchief tightly in her hands. There was no denying it; she clearly recognised the now torn handkerchief. When she first laid eyes upon it, her heart shook. However, as Jin Fengju made his accusations, her heart rate slowed to a glacial pace. She knew that if she do not deal with the matter properly, she, Yu Jie and Aunt Yu would be finished. Disregarding their standing within the marquisate, they might even lose their lives tonight.

"Dare I ask the Young Marquis, what is the benefit does this humble woman achieve for making the marquisate lose face? Or, should I ask, what benefit would Zhenjiang Palace receive?"

Fu Qiuning slowly raised her eyes to meet Jin Fengju's glare. Without waiting for him to reply, she said softly, "Indeed, if the marquisate loses face, it would invite mockery from the people. However, this matter originated from me, a woman. Would the emperor feel that the Young Marquis lacks talent and alienate you over this? Would the strength of the Jin Marquisate collapse? Not to mention, as the wise man of the ages, would the emperor even take this matter seriously? At worst, those who delight in calamity would mock the Young Marquis for a while. This matter could certainly pull down the marquisate's face, but it has little impact on the marquisate's power. Young Marquis, do you feel that this humble woman would risk her life over something as insignificant as the marquisate's face?"

Confronted by Fu Qiuning's calm eyes, the anger in Jin Fengju's faded a little. They had been getting along with each other for a good half year now. Enough to understand that this woman valued self-improvement, self-reliance, self-love and self-respect. If he were to spare a bit more thought on the matter, if Fu Qiuning was truly moving on behalf of Zhenjiang Palace, why would she only launch a single attack six years later? Moreover, to only damage the face of the marquisate?

[1] Not to mention, he had made repeated overtures to her, but had been soundly rejected each time. If she truly did have schemes in her heart, wouldn't it have been more preferable to ensnare him completely to better ruin him than to play this insignificant trick?

Now that he had time to think, his anger subsided a bit more and his voice became gentler. However, it was still rather stern and even sarcastic as he said, "If that is the case, then why did you sell your embroidery? Ever since I stepped into Night Breeze Pavilion in spring, everything had been gradually prepared for you. Don't tell me that you're selling your embroidery to make ends meet?"

Fu Qiuning privately sighed with relief. She thought: Well, looks like we have skipped over this hurdle nicely.

[1] Now that she had judged herself safe, muted anger began to unfreeze her fear as she cast an indifferent glance at the torn handkerchief. She sneered, "A very good question, Young Marquis. A very good question indeed, this humble woman had been waiting all this while for you to ask this question."

As she spoke, her eyes slowly moved up to look directly at Jin Fengju. Her voice remained soft but every word was heavy with meaning, "Looks like you also recalled that you stepped into Night Breeze Pavilion this spring? Before this, five years, full five years have passed since your visit on the day I hung myself from the beam. The next day, Jin Ming stopped by on your orders with a few rolls of satin, with the instructions to make clothes for the children. Since that day, it had been five years.

Over one thousand six hundred nights and days have passed since you inquired after us mother and children, let alone sent any food, clothing or silver. How do you think we survived? Do you imagine we survived on those few sweet potatoes, corn and vegetables? When Jiao'er and Feng'er came, there was not a single intact skin on their bodies. Old and new injuries stacked upon each other, with some scars that would never fade for years. Do you not imagine that we would need medicine?

In winter, the north wind blows and snow freezes the very breath into drops of ice. Without charcoal or firewood, how do you imagine we survived the icy days? The cloth you sent was not bad, but without cotton quilts or padded clothing, could we have passed the winter in satin clothes? Young Marquis, it has been so many years, do you not know?

The inner court has never sent a single coin to us. That we have not become dried bones and ghosts within Night Breeze Pavilion, all depended on selling those worthless accessories and brocade cloth from my dowry. From the embroidery that Yu Jie, Aunt Yu and I sewed during our spare time in exchange for rice, flour, oil and salt. For cotton and fabrics to keep ourselves from freezing to death. Do you think that is all? There is more that you do not know.

Within this courtyard, the roses, honeysuckle and Japanese roses are sold as wreaths and bouquets, the potted fragrant plants, and the fruits from these trees were all sneaked out by a trusted friend to be sold for more money. Because I have done all this, you can now celebrate your son's and daughter's eighth birthday this year. That you can now see me alive and standing in this place."

As she spoke, she stepped closer and closer. The dignified Young Marquis stumbled back, step by painful step as he retreated from her words, each of them dripping with blood, sweat and tears. Suddenly, Fu Qiuning stopped. She turned to look out the window. That was when he saw the tears trickling down her cheeks.

"I had believed that I would live like this for the rest of my life. Though life was hard, it was peaceful. Who would have thought that you would break in and ruin the peace of this well? Young Marquis, it is you who dragged me before your wives and concubines, before the Old Madam and paraded me before the rest of your family. It is you, who made me the new target of criticism and schemes of your wives and concubines.

You have been sending an endless parade of things into this place, believing that these were enough to ease our worries. I had believed that there was no need to worry about survival from then on. Even without money, so long as there was enough to live on, I shall not care for the rest. I have even instructed Yu Jie to stop selling things. However, it was already too late.

Young Marquis, think carefully. Your official wife has been selling embroidery, jewellery, flowers, fruits, and spices from this courtyard for over six years. Why did the news suddenly start spreading now? And in so short a time, to 'allow everyone to know'? Do you really believe this is all just a coincidence?"

Jin Fengju was speechless. The sharpness in his eyes dulled as he stared pensively at Fu Qiuning.

"Forget it, now that things have come to this point, what is the use of talking about it? This embroidery is sold by me. Do as you like with me. As for the mess happening outside, there is nothing I can do about it. If you wish me to take all the blame, that is fine. If my death can save the marquisate's face, take it. I have only one condition. As Feng'er and Jiao'er's blood father, you must promise to love and protect them from now on and let them grow into adults peacefully. Otherwise, even once I have been sent to hell… I will not rest. Even if I have to transform into a malicious spirit, I shall haunt you every day, and ask you where your conscience has gone."

At the mention of Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, Fu Qiuning's control wavered and tears flowed like rain. However, she refused to admit defeat and look at Jin Fengju directly. Her face was resolute as she stared through the window with iron resolve. Jin Fengju was convinced that if he did not fulfil his fatherly obligations, this woman would really transform into a malicious ghost and haunt him.

"If you transform into a malicious spirit, then Feng'er and Jiao'er will certainly hate me for life, wouldn't they?"

Jin Fengju sighed and went forward to take Fu Qiuning's hand, intending to embrace her gently in his arms, but to his surprise, Fu Qiuning pushed him away. The woman before him was obviously weaker than him, yet seemed as insurmountable as a high mountain. She took over a dozen steps back, clearly putting distance between them.

Jin Fengju's face couldn't help but change. With his status and family background, what woman had ever rejected his advances? Moreover, the woman rejecting him now was his own official wife.

However, his expression still softened in the end. He looked at Fu Qiuning, who was leaning against a wall, away from him. Finally, he lowered his eyes and said in a gentle voice, "The fault is mine. I cannot blame you. I shall not attempt to defend myself, only… I really did not know that for the past 5 years, you have not received even a single allocation. Thank you, if not for you, Feng'er and Jiao'er… I'm afraid they would have…"

He did not continue, knowing that Fu Qiuning would understand what he was going to say. Sighing again, he raised his eyes to look into Fu Qiuning's indifferent face. It was only then, that he realised just how much this woman had been hurt by him. He had been cold, ruthless, and cruel. To think that he had been looking forward to the day she would change her mind and accept him with open arms… could this even be possible?

"There is no need to speak these words. No matter what, all of us, mother and children, are alive and well." [a] Understanding that Jin Fengju no longer blame her for the handkerchief incident, Fu Qiuning was greatly relieved. This calmed her heart further and she ventured to ask, "However, how should the matter be handled? From Lord Husband's words, the entire city knows the marquisate's shame."

"No need to concern yourself over this, I shall take care of it." There was a murderous aura under Jin Fengju's light tone. He lightly thumped his fist on the table, and continued, "Once I find out who is behind this good deed, I shall not let them off lightly."

"[a] There is no need for the Young Marquis to make such grand claims. It is possible that once you have discovered the person, you would not be able to do anything about it."

Fu Qiuning's smile was very indifferent. Jin Fengju's eyebrows creased together. As an intelligent person, he naturally understood what Fu Qiuning's meant.

"This matter may not be as simple as you think." Slowly, he made his way to a chair and sat down. He picked up an empty cup and began to fiddle with it as he shared his thoughts, "It is one thing for this matter to spread far and wide, but do you know who gave me this handkerchief?"

"Who was it?" Since he had deliberately baited her interest, [a] Fu Qiuning decided to play along. After all, she was a little curious too. "Could it be Prince Rong?"

"If it had been Brother-in-law, would I come here and trouble you?" Jin Fengju sneered. "It was Prince Lie. Due to my relationship with Brother-in-law, both Prince Lie and Prince Hong only treat me as a nodding acquaintance. However, this time, His Highness personally brought me this news and even attempted some friendly overtures. You tell me now, what do you think he's thinking?"

"As Lord Husband had said, the matter has been made known to everyone by now. If Prince Lie wished to draw you into his faction, he could have given you a reminder two days earlier. What is the purpose of waiting until the matter could not be undone before informing you of it? Isn't it possible that he merely called you out to mock you to your face?" Fu Qiuning also slowly sat down as [a] she pondered over the matter.

"It is unlikely that Prince Lie would invite me to a meal just for the sole pleasure of mocking me. Moreover, to still give me time to put a stop to this matter," Jing Fengju sneered. He thought: No matter. Since the prince's motives are unknown. I'll just wait and see for now.

He then smiled at Fu Qiuning, "Do call Aunt Yu, Yu Jie and the children in. After hiding themselves in the study, I'm afraid they must be really frightened by now. I have never shown such a fierce expression before them, right?"

"So Lord Husband also knows that he has frightened them?" Fu Qiuning sniffed. She went over to the door, opened it and called towards the study, "Alright, you can all come in now. Be careful when you come over, don't catch a chill."

At that, sounds of hurried footsteps echoed through the corridor. Aunt Yu, Yu Jie and the rest of the children came trotting over. When the maids saw their mistress, they cried out, "Madam… Madam, are you alright?"

Between howls and sobs, childish voices wailed, "Wuwuwu, Mother, did Father bully Mother?"

Jin Fengju was still seated in his chair. In Fu Qiuning's modern eyes, she could almost see the black lines that had gathered over him. There were probably enough black lines to make two large pots of noodles. Ignoring the man, she smiled at the children and said, "It's fine. Mother is fine. How could your Father bully Mother?"

"Father looked very fierce when he came in, so scary…" Jin Changjiao choked out between sobs as she wiped her tears.

"Cough cough" Jin Fengju coughed twice before standing up. He gloomily thought: Must they be so exaggerated? Was I really that scary when I came in? En, it's possible that my face might have been a bit dark when I came in and this scared the children.

Therefore, he rearranged his face to show a friendly expression and stretched out his arms toward Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao. He also mellowed his voice and said, "It's alright, Father and Mother were just discussing something earlier. It's all fine now. Come, let Father give you a hug."

Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao backed slightly away in unison. From their posture, it looked like they were protecting Fu Qiuning from him as they stared guardedly at Jin Fengju. Neither of them spoke.

Jin Fengju was already at that age, but he had never encountered such an awkward situation. He thought: Well, looks like the saying is true. No good ever comes out of impulsive actions. By losing both my temper and composure, what little bit of affection I had cultivated over a year, and coaxed with many things with my two precious children, have disappeared just like that. Just look at the expression in their eyes.

They are already this wary even though I have not done anything to Qiuning. If I had actually done something, I expect that these two little fellows would have driven me out. Tsk, looks like all my previous achievements have been lost. I shall have to win them all over again.

Though he felt aggrieved, Jin Fengju maintained a mild and friendly expression as he withdrew his hands. He continued to act nonchalantly as he stood up, "Alright, it is getting late. You should go to bed early. I still need to return to the inner court. There are some things I must think through properly."

"It's snowy and slippery outside, and you have no escort with you. Why not rest here?" Fu Qiuning really did not want to say that. She did not want Jin Fengju to assume that she was worried for him.

However, the children had developed some obvious resentment against their father. If that resentment was not treated properly, it could brew into future troubles. As a powerless woman in such a noble house filled with enemies [a], the children's future would depend entirely on Jin Fengju. If the children continued to treat the man coldly, this arrogant father of theirs might one day decide that these children were too troublesome to deal with and abandon them again. If that were to happen, the ones who suffered would be the children, right?

Furthermore, she was very clear that this incident happened because someone had specifically aimed at her. [a] Though Jin Fengju did not know that Night Breeze Pavilion had never received allocations of any kind, it is unlikely that the person in charge of his inner court [b] would not know. So long as someone took the time to rub a few brain cells together, certain key points would surface.

[a] Nevertheless, it did not change the fact that the only person she could effectively rely on would still be Jin Fengju. At the very least, she would not be so stupid as to put on a cold look and kick her biggest backer away.

Moreover, Jin Fengju's actions were not too bad. He might have crashed into her place, all angry. However, when he found out he was in the wrong, he still apologized, and even thank her. What else would she have this proud man do? Kowtow and admit his mistake? No way, she still had some self-awareness. Currently, he was obsessed over her, [a] which meant she could use him to shield the residents of Night Breeze Pavilion. Therefore, there is no need to kick him down when he had already shown remorse.

Due to those two considerations, no matter how unwilling, Fu Qiuning is determined to maintain a relationship… Even so, the gentle look on Jin Fengju's face nearly made her [a] break out in hives, even more so when he said softly, "If I were to stay the night, I'm afraid it would leave a scar on your heart, right?"

"I do not fear scars. What I fear are unresolved misunderstandings. Once the misunderstanding has been resolved, naturally, the relationship cannot revert to its original form." Fu Qiuning's smile was very professional even as she privately howled: Young Marquis, you had better not delude yourself with my explanations, ah. I have no other meaning, no special intentions, ah!

However, it was obvious that Jin Fengju did not believe it. His eyes, when staring at Fu Qiuning, were very intense. Finally, he nodded slowly. His smile was heavy with meaning as he said solemnly, "Yes, you are right. Once a misunderstanding is resolved, there is nothing frightening about it. Then, I shall sleep here tonight." With that, he stood up and said, "The floor is a little cold, but the kang is still warm. Come, Feng'er, Jiao'er, come sit by father on the kang, alright?"

Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao were still children after all. After being coaxed by Jin Fengju, they felt confused and unsure of what to do.

They looked up at Fu Qiuning, and when they saw that she did not look angry at their father and was even smilingly pushing them toward him, they concluded that Father and Mother must have resolved their conflict and now all was well. Thus, whatever knots in their hearts fell away and the children happily clambered onto the kang and clung to their father like octopuses.

"Yu Jie, pour a cup of hot tea for the Young Marquis," Fu Qiuning said mildly. She picked up the cloak that Jin Fengju had taken off and hung it up. "This cloak has been soaked through by snow. Has Lord Husband rushed here?"

"No, in fact, Prince Lie pestered me to dine with him until half past noon. I quickly delegated some of my tasks to other people before rushing over. Half of my day was spent outside." He frowned, "Didn't you say that the person entrusted to sell your things is trustworthy? How is it possible for people to find out? The news outside was no mere rumour, there were stores claiming to have sold your embroideries for a long time. The information was quite detailed."

Fu Qiuning said, "I, too, am puzzled After selling our things for over five years, Third Brother Zhang has also proven to be a discreet person. So, why would he reveal us now? If you claim that he had sold us out for silver, I won't believe it. He has been with us all this while and had never asked us for a single silver. He should not be the greedy type, ah."

While she was speaking, another thought occurred to her and she said, "In fact, this Brother Zhang is the same person I spoke to you about. He is Aunt Yu's [1] childhood friend, Madam Zhang's third son."

"I see, if that is the case, then it would not be difficult for the curious to find out about this matter." Jin Fengju tapped his finger against the table lightly. Suddenly, he raised his eyes and smiled at Fu Qiuning, "Did you not mention that you have lately become the target of many arrows? [1] Since that is the case, shall I step in and strike on your behalf? Do you wish to maintain the peace? If you make a big move and show your colours now, it is possible that others would not dare to trouble you again in the future."

Fu Qiuning looked at him blankly for a moment, her mind whizzing quickly as she thought: Jin Fengju, just what are you trying to say? Did he already have some sort of plan in mind? Well, looks like it's almost a certainty. Wait, that's not important. What's more important is his weird attitude. Does he want me to remain neutral, or does he want me to take up the flag and make trouble?

Fu Qiuning considered Jin Fengju's personality for a moment before saying, "Since Lord Husband intends to strike on behalf of this humble woman, do forgive this humble woman for being forward. This humble woman's ultimate wish is to stay away from strife of all kinds. If Lord Husband can strike the mountain and shake the tiger, this humble woman will naturally be grateful. However, this humble woman has some concerns. Lord Husband has many connections and relationships with the people within the marquisate. Therefore, there is no need to deliberately raise a fuss on behalf of this humble woman."

A small smile curved up her lips and she quietly added, "In fact, there is no need for this humble woman to even mention this. Lord Husband should have guessed that I would reply thus and have your own plans in place. In fact, by speaking thus, it makes this humble woman appear insincere, purposely creating suspicion where there is none."

"Hahaha … indeed, as expected of Fu Qiuning. You truly are my confidante." Jin Fengju suddenly laughed out loud. Yu Jie, Aunt Yu and the four children were startled by the sudden loud noise. However, since Jin Fengju did not look unhappy, their emotions settled down again.

"To strike the mountain and scare the tiger, very good. I owe you too much, therefore, I should strike the mountain for you and scare that tiger once." Jin Fengju's fist landed heavily on the kang, making the others jump. Then, he turned to the children, "Be sure to not reveal even half a word of what had happened tonight, understand? It is for your mother's sake."

The four children nodded simultaneously. Fu Qiuning also lowered her eyes and made some sounds of agreement. She had just been pondering over Jin Fengju's attitude and intentions. She recalled that this man was the proud and disdainful sort. Prideful, to the point of looking down on senior officials. [1] He should be the type to retaliate on whatever slights against him quickly. [2a] Note how he had cut off all relationships with the laundry woman, and how he suddenly married in those extra wives and concubines immediately after he was forced into a marriage with Fu Qiuning. Still, this man sure knew how to be cautious, and merely displayed his arrogance against those who could not or cannot afford to retaliate against him.

Had been the cringing type, she might have invited disdain from this proud man. Not that she could care less about being disdained by this arrogant asshole. Had she been alone in this place, she would have frozen him out, cursed him openly and never entangled herself with this [2b] despicable man ever again. However, she had to consider the two children. If she refuses his 'generous' offer to strike on her behalf, Jin Fengju might throw a [2b] childish fit, suddenly decide to retaliate against her and declare, 'Not willing to compromise? Then suffer!'

Why should she and the children suffer [2c] a fickle man's delusion of romance? Therefore, after considering the matter properly, she decided to go with Jin Fengju's 'good intentions'. She would play her part in his little plan and show those wives and concubines some toughness from her side. At the very least, those twittering birds should think twice whenever they want to scheme against her.

To Fu Qiuning, it was best not to retaliate whenever possible. If she had to make a move, it must leave a strong enough impression that those annoying women would have to consciously decide whether it was worth fighting her or not. Hopefully, those women would suffer some PTSD from her attacks and would shrink back from attacking her or the children, leading them to not raise a hand against her at all. This would be the best outcome of this 'Strike the Mountain' move.

After Yu Jie served tea, Jin Fengju picked up the cup and leaned against the pillow. As he slowly sipped his tea, his eyes were oddly unfocused. Fu Qiuning guessed that he must be strategizing and put her finger to her lips, signalling for the children to be quiet. The man was a [2c] prideful ass, but Fu Qiuning also understood that he was in a more difficult position than herself. She only had to guard her own little household against his many women, but he had to placate those women, consider the family honour and assist Prince Rong, not to mention defend against attacks from the other princes and backstabbing courtiers. It's best that she does not become a burden for this man, or he would most likely dump her as soon as possible. The children still need the protection of this man and the marquisate.

[3] The Young Marquis was praised to be clever, favoured by the emperor and successful. This 'great man' was still in his early twenties but had to shoulder responsibilities of the honour and disgrace of the entire marquisate. He did all that and was still able to maintain a facade of a good family man and a dashing beauty, possessing the unrestrained nature of a manly man. One had to admire his ability to maintain his good work ethic, ability to balance relationships and maintain a good public face. This shows his ability to act very well.

As Fu Qiuning considered this, she could not help the thread of pity that spun out for Jin Fengju. [3] How tiring it must be to have to maintain such a facade day in, day out, in front of your own wives and mother. Thus, she came forward to place a plate of snacks beside him and said gently, "Have some snacks, Lord Husband. Have you had dinner yet? This humble woman, Feng'er and Jiao'er have not eaten either. How about joining us?" [c] She might regret extending this goodwill in the future, but for now, let's try to build some relationship first. She could regret at leisure later.

Jin Fengju raised his eyes. His smile was cool as he said, "Very well, I have not had anything to eat this afternoon. Instead, I was plied with wine by Prince Lie. I'm feeling a little uncomfortable now." He frowned and muttered. "It's really odd. Even though Prince Lie had always been unruly under the indulgent eye of the emperor, who saw it as part of his attitude from being in the military, he had always shown some restraint. Why was he so affectionate with me today? Even if he had wanted to ridicule me or show some goodwill, surely he should not be so unbridled, ah."

[4]

He was mostly talking to himself here, but the words flowed to Fu Qiuning's ears and she studied him for a moment. The man before her has slender, sword-like eyebrows flying towards his temples. Eyes as bright as stars. A straight nose. A mouth with beautiful lips. His dark hair, which was held up by a jade hairpin, had been scattered from the effort of running around all day. No matter how one looked at it, Jin Fengju's looks could be described in two words.

An 'extraordinary beauty'.

No matter how she looked at it, this Jin Fengju was an extraordinarily beautiful man. Back in modern China, none of the handsome men and beautiful stars could hold a candle to him in looks. No wonder it was said that after he was married, he still firmly occupied the position of being the capital's number one most beautiful man.

Could it be that this was a BL matter? Fu Qiuning considered: If Prince Lie has the habit of liking men, surely it would not be out of the question for him to, ahem, develop an interest? Especially towards the wonderful example of male beauty in front of her? To hear the Young Marquis describe it, Prince Lie had even thrown his arms around the beauty's shoulders and patted his back. The poor Young Marquis just had his tofu [5] nibbled on and did not even know it. Look, the fellow is still thinking hard over there.

"What are you thinking about? What has captivated you so?"

A sudden question sounded in her ear. Still lost in her own thoughts, Fu Qiuning answered absently, "This humble woman is wondering whether Prince Lie has any interest in male beauties…" Even as the words left her mouth [6], she froze in place and thought: [6a] Oops, wait, what's the stance on gay relationships in this era? Will this guy be offended? Is BL a serious taboo or just frowned upon? Would this guy be enraged at her suggestion, or intrigued?

"Male beauties? I never heard of any such rumours…" Jin Fengju frowned as he pondered on the matter. Then, he paused and turned wide eyes at Fu Qiuning, "You… are you saying…?"

[6b] Seeing Jin Fengju's face turn blue, red and finally as black as the bottom of a pot, Fu Qiuning guessed that he was not at all flattered at the idea of being seen as, ahem, an object of interest. Especially since she could actually hear his grinding teeth.

Sensing that the man was about to explode, she quickly said, "Young Marquis, this humble woman did not mean anything, it is merely a little speculation…"

"Do not speculate wildly, unlike the bygone dynasty of the past, Emperor Taizu and Emperor Taizong place great importance on virtue. Reducing such custom shaming practices. Moreover, Prince Lie does not have an interest in… such things." Jin Fengju said sternly.

He really wanted to grab this woman and spank her a few times. He thought: This bold little woman, how dare she indulges in such wild speculations? Him? Desired by men? No matter what, he is still her official husband. If others knew what wild thoughts she had in her head, they would have forced her to drink an entire pot of vinegar as punishment.

"Yes, this humble woman understands." Fu Qiuning [6] nearly rolled her eyes at his overreaction. Still, [6c] she was grateful that this man managed to restrain himself from hitting her. She could see from the clench of his jaw and fist that he was tempted to do just that.

Thankfully, they were called to dinner shortly after that. Since they had no idea that Jin Fengju would be coming, dinner was made up of ordinary home-cooked meals. Rice was ordinary Egg Fried Rice, but thanks to Aunt Yu's skills, the tender yellow rice sparkled like crystals and looked even more appetizing when contrasted with shredded jade green spring onions.

The food was still steaming hot, so Fu Qiuning ordered for dinner to be placed on the round table on the kang. She said, "It's cold, go set a table in your room on the kang and have Zhuan'er and Lu Hua eat with you."

Aunt Yu and Yu Jie hastily acknowledged the order and led Jin Zhuan and Lu Hua to their rooms. Once the maids and the servant children had left, Fu Qiuning asked Jin Fengju, "Would Lord Husband like some wine?"

"Indeed, no need to bring anything fancy, just pour two cups of your home-brewed fruit wine." Jin Fengju picked up a piece of pork rib and placed it into Jin Changfeng's bowl. He did the same for his daughter and laughed, "Your wine is mellow and sweet. I had not liked it at first, but lately, I cannot stop thinking about its taste. How strange."

They chatted over dinner until the meal was over. Jin Fengju finished with two cups of hot wine, feeling much more comfortable as he said with a smile, "Now, I'm finally warmed from inside out…"

Before he could finish, the sounds of footsteps coming from the outside interrupted him. Fu Qiuning looked up in surprise, "It's already so late, who could it be? Ah, I just remembered I forgot to close the courtyard door."

Jin Fengju laughed and said, "Who else could it be? It is probably Jin Ming, here to give me his report. No need to be afraid, just ask him to come in." Not long after that, tapping sounds came from the door and Jin Ming's voice floated through, "Young Marquis! Madam! It is me, please open the door, ah."

Yu Jie quickly trotted over to let Jin Ming in. She opened the door and was surprised to see him covered in snow. "What's this? Is it snowing again?"

"What do you mean again? Girl, take a look outside. Snow is falling like goose feathers outside. If it keeps on falling like this, I'm afraid the snow would not end at merely three or five inches deep." Jin Ming kept talking as he dashed in. He sighed, "Aih, such heavy snow at the start of the winter. I can tell that the common people's days will not be good. I was just walking past the city walls today and saw a frozen beggar's corpse being carried out of the city."

"This actually happened?"

Hearing Jin Fengju's voice, Jin Ming hastily entered the room and replied, "Indeed, while I was out on errands today, I saw many beggars seeking shelter by the city walls. One froze to death today. Tomorrow, who knows how many would die."

"Detestable. [7]" Jin Fengju suddenly slapped the table, causing the bowls and plates to tremble. Under the candlelight, Fu Qiuning saw this handsome face actually turn green as he continued to bellow, "Just where are we? We are the Capital city, right at the foot of the emperor! In the past, if people froze to death in winter, the emperor himself would investigate the matter. It is barely the beginning of winter, but a death already happened? Who dares to be so bold? Treating human lives like mere grass?"

Jin Ming shook a little at Jin Fengju's outburst. He stared at his master and said in a low voice, "In the past, matters relating to the resettlement of citizens to the Capital City were handled by Prince Rong. However, from last winter onwards, the work was given to Prince Lie. At that time, Master was in the Northwest assisting the emperor in training the troops and did not return for nearly the whole of the winter.

Word has it that tens of people froze to death, but the news disappeared and no one seemed to know about the deaths. The emperor also praised Prince Lie for doing a good job. Thus, he was naturally given the same responsibility again."

Jin Fengju frowned, and said, "So that's what happened. That is to say, not only was the winter prevention disaster management for the capital handed to Prince Lie, but for other provinces as well."

Jin Ming nodded repeatedly, "Isn't it so? All were handled by Prince Lie. Fortunately, last year's winter was not too bad and no deaths were reported from other places. When the reports were submitted, the emperor was very pleased and even rewarded Prince Lie with a few precious paintings. Our prince does not care for the paintings, otherwise, he would have complained about the matter to Young Marquis."

"Idiot, can such words leave your lips?" Jin Fengju glared at him. Then, he shifted his gaze to his twin son and daughter. He smiled and said, "Good children, go and play with Aunt Yu and Yu Jie. Father wants to speak to your mother now. Can you remember father's instructions?"

"Yes, Father. Anything that was said today cannot be said in front of others," Jin Changjiao announced with a raised hand. Jin Fengju stroked her little head, smiled and said, "Very sensible. Just remember, if you two speak of the matter and others know, Father will never come to Night Breeze Pavilion anymore. Understand?"

Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao nodded like chickens pecking rice, running out hand in hand. Fu Qiuning released a sigh, casting a reproachful look at Jin Fengju, "The two children are still young, you know they are most afraid of you never returning to Night Breeze Pavilion, so why do you have to scare them like this?"

"This is a matter of great importance. I, too, have no choice. This is the best way to scare them into compliance," said Jin Fengju indifferently. He got off the bed and slipped on his shoes. After pacing about a few times, he suddenly stood still and looked at Fu Qiuning. "Paper cannot wrap fire [1]. Prince Lie relies on the emperor's favour and does not put the hundreds of lives from these provinces in his eyes. If we let him continue with this nonsense, it will backfire one day, drawing the wrath of the dragon on his head. When the time comes, all we need to do is sit back and enjoy the show. Don't you think so?"

Fu Qiuning looked into his eyes. Suddenly, she smiled and said softly, "Could it be that Lord Husband pities those innocent lives and cannot bear the weight on your conscience?"

Jin Fengju's lips twisted into a bitter smile as he patted her shoulder. His voice was grave as he said, "Only you could say this, and only you know me well enough. Qiuning, are you willing to be used by me, just this once?"

"Does the Young Marquis wish for this humble woman to make a trip back to her maternal family?" Fu Qiuning's tone was indifferent as she sat on the edge of the kang. In a voice so low that it sounded as though she was talking to herself, she smiled and said, "It is cold, the kang bed is warmer for it."

Jin Fengju's brow was tightly knitted. After frowning for a long time he sighed and waved his hand, "It's fine, it's fine, it's not like there are no other ways. The days are getting colder and snowy roads are hard to traverse. There's no need for you to make the trip."

Fu Qiuning continued to sit and study the man before her quietly. [a] She never knew that this man could actually look so worried when it came to matters about the country and people. Wreathed in worry, anguish and melancholy, his handsomeness wafted off him almost like a visible cloud. Anyone looking at him would be drawn to believe that he truly worries for the people. In fact, from the way he paced back and forth in front of her, even letting out a long sigh before calling for Jin Ming to, 'Go to my study and bring me my account books' [b] she had to wonder whether he was putting on a play before her.

"Enough [b] of that, you wish for me to visit my maternal family? Fine, consider it my payment for the Young Marquis' promise to stick up on my behalf." Fu Qiuning suddenly stood up. If the Young Marquis' concern [c] was not mere performance, she could at least allow herself to imagine that he was less of a scum to the general public than to the women in his harem. At the very least, she would play his games and not let the people suffer over some stupid family intrigue schemes.

Jin Fengju looked at her with some surprise. He barked out a sudden laugh, "Why the sudden agreement? Don't tell me you hold a grudge against my questioning you over the handkerchief, and waited to see me embarrassed before agreeing to assist me? Looks like you still have me in your heart?"

"Lord Husband, please mind your words." Fu Qiuning shot him a displeased look [b]. "Lord Husband has the common people in his heart. Thus, should not this humble woman have pity for them as well? I merely hope that my actions will serve to assist the people. Though I will come to entangle with other people in the process, it is my shame to bear. However, I also understand that I am merely a helpless creature in a hopeless situation. I understand that to live in peace, I shall have to compromise certain things. This, I am very clear in my heart."

Jin Fengju's eyes lit up, he nodded and said, "Yes, it is good that you understand. Qiuning, you… are truly a curious woman. How unfortunate that you are not in the harem. Otherwise, with such boldness and courage, you would have taken over the harem quickly. So long as you have a shred of benevolence, the harem would be blessed."

"Young Marquis, please mind your words."

Fu Qiuning thought: Why don't you just scram? Having transmigrated into this marquisate is already unfortunate enough for me and you still want to push me into the harem?

Do you think I'm Zhen Huan? [2] Even if I were Zhen Huan, wouldn't my whole life still be described as extremely unlucky?

Today, I agreed to abandon my father and grandfather to assist you. However, that's only because they pushed me into this horrible marquisate in the first place, so why should I put their interest above mine? I am no Virgin Mary and those men are strangers to me. Furthermore, I still have to rely on you to keep me safe. Why should I let your family fall over such a small matter? Moreover, if Prince Rong ascends the throne in the future, having a capable minister who appears to have the people's welfare in his heart would benefit the public.

When her thoughts reach this part, she softly said, "It is to Lord Husband's credit that he cares for the people. However, as the saying goes, 'Those who should achieve great things, must not be stuck on trivial things'. Though your heart aches with pity, could Prince Lie's arrogance be knocked down by the weight of one beggar's life?" She turned to look out the window, "The snowfall is very heavy. Once the sky clears, there would be no telling how many would be buried in the snow. However, this short-term pain would be worth it for a wave of long-lasting peace."

"What you said, I understand." Jin Fengju nodded. He said solemnly, "As you said, sacrifice is necessary for long-term peace." Suddenly, he felt a jolt in his heart. With a smile, he said, "Well, it's time to sleep. I promise to act on your behalf. To shake the mountain and scare the tiger, so to speak, and I never go back on my word. This time, I shall make it so that you may raise your eyebrows and blow off steam. When the time comes, I believe there is no need to make up any excuses. Your father shall suddenly miss his daughter on his own."

Fu Qiuning looked at him blankly. She thought over the matter for a moment before smiling lightly and said, "If that is the case, this humble woman shall carry out her duty should the opportunity arises and fulfil Lord Husband's wish."

Jin Fengju nodded with a smile. Then, he turned to Jin Ming, "Well? What of the matter that I instructed you to investigate? Have you found the source?"

Jin Ming replied, "The source is still unclear, only…." he flashed a quick glance at Fu Qiuning. Catching the hint, Jin Fengju nevertheless waved his hand carelessly and said, "It's fine, continue."

"Understood. Back to the matter Young Marquis bade this one investigate. Everything in Madam's hand was sold through the backdoor by Madam Zhang's son. This servant dare not 'startle the snake by swatting the grass' [3] and returned for further instructions from Master."

Fu Qiuning [d] stayed silent, but her eyes spoke volumes as she stared at Jin Fengju.

Jin Fengju waved his hand at her as he laughed and said, "I understand, I understand, I know what to do in this matter. Rest easy, I will not break the mother and son's rice bowl. [4]"

Fu Qiuning looked away, leaving Jin Fengju to look at her pensively. [b] On her side, there was really nothing she could do if Jin Fengju decided to persecute the mother and son due to the grudges between them. It would not be the first time this happened after all.

The heavy snow fell throughout the whole night.

The sky had yet to brighten when Jin Fengju got up. He had intended to wash his face and have Jin Ming put his hair up when he unexpectedly encountered Fu Qiuning. The two met in the corridor, surprised to see each other. Jin Fengju spotted the kettle of hot water in her hand and asked, "Why are you up so early in such weather?"

Fu Qiuning quickly saluted with a smile, "This humble woman is used to waking early. It does not matter whether it is spring, autumn, winter or summer, this humble woman would be up at this time. But, why is Lord Husband up so early? The snow may have stopped falling, but the wind is still quite strong. It scrapes at people's cheeks like knives and sneaks snowflakes into one's clothes. Surely there is no need to be up so early if there is nothing urgent to be done?"

"You are not wrong. However, there is one matter that can never be delayed," said Jin Fengju as he returned to his room. Fu Qiuning trailed after him, "The morning court?"

"Naturally, aside from that, why would anyone wake up so early?"

As they spoke, Fu Qiuning moved to pour hot water into a copper basin. Jin Fengju went over to wash his face and dried himself off with a large square of cloth. On the side, Fu Qiuning frowned, "What if the emperor did not appear? Won't the people who appear early in the morning have gone to court in vain?"

"Then we would have gone to court in vain and can only disperse. Though we carry a belly full of complaints, we dare not let anything spill out. Yesterday, no one informed us that court is cancelled today, therefore we must all attend. If the emperor did not appear, I shall return early." Jin Fengju said as he wiped his hands.

"Isn't this similar to playing with people's lives?" Fu Qiuning's [b] modern worker's rights thoughts intruded.

"As someone who lives off the ruler's fortune and is granted much glory and wealth, this much respect is appropriate," said Jin Fengju with a smile as he placed the towel on a stand. He sat on his chair and said, "You have not seen the farmers who faced the ground day after day with their backs to the sky. They make only enough to ensure the survival of their families but their lives are a hundred times harder than ours. Jin Ming had probably just rolled out of his nest. Come, help me put up my hair. Just a bun would do."

"Even so, during the winter months, farmers can sleep on a warm kang bed until the sun is high in the sky and do not need to run around so early in the morning for something [a] that may or may not happen," said Fu Qiuning as she absentmindedly picked up the comb. She had put the children's hair up before [b] so she was quite capable of fixing long hair into buns. Moreover, she was still Jin Fengju's official wife, and therefore could not excuse herself from this job.

Jin Fengju stared at the slender hands removing his hairpin in the bronze mirror. As she gathered the locks of black hair and put them up on his head, he said, "This is the fortune of farmers. We have our glory, they have their peace and leisure time. Otherwise, what other good thing could they look forward to?"

Fu Qiuning thought about it for a moment. [c] Indeed, life was much simpler when she was barely making ends meet. The joys were simpler with no grandeur. However, now she had to trade peace of mind for grand schemes and duties. Life is indeed harder as a bourgeoisie. No wonder she, a good communist youth, was finding it hard to assimilate to this life.

Still lost in thought, she was suddenly disturbed by a knock on the door. After receiving permission to enter, Jin Ming came in to say, "Yo~ Master's hair is already done? Here this servant thought to rush over to assist Master,"

"No need, it's all done. Let's go, we still have to put on our court attire at Clear Soft Pavilion." Jin Fengju turned to Fu Qiuning, "You may wait here at ease for news. If anything were to happen, stay calm. I shall deal with it when I return, understand?"

"Yes, this humble woman understands. Lord Husband should make haste and not delay your journey to the morning court," Fu Qiuning replied with a salute. She watched as Jin Fengju and Jing Ming disappeared into the snow. Once the men had disappeared, the sound of children stirring in the house was finally heard.

Let us speak of the moment Jin Fengju arrive at Clear Soft Pavilion.

When he arrived, he saw that the lanterns within the main room had already been lit. He hesitated for a moment before pushing past the door and stepping in. He found Jiang Wanying already dressed and groomed. At the sight of her husband, she got up with a smile, "Lord Husband went to Night Breeze Pavilion last night? Why have you not sent word? If Xing'er had not seen Lord Husband by accident, I would not have known about it."

As she spoke, she fetched the official uniform and hat on the way and personally helped Jin Fengju put them on.

"What did Xing'er say?" asked Jin Fengju dully as she dressed him.

"Nothing much, only that Lord Husband did not look too happy. This humble woman thought that something major must have happened at Night Breeze Pavilion and sent a servant girl to have a look. Who knows whether she was lazy or went off to do something else, but she returned to say that nothing much was happening. She also dared not disturb Lord Husband, did not encounter anyone else and came back just like that. I was so concerned that I could not sleep well last night. Knowing that Lord Husband's court attire is here and that Lord Husband must stop by before attending court, I waited until now to inquire. Well? Did something happen? Should I visit dear Elder Sister today?"

"No need, nothing happened. I was held back by Prince Lie, who insisted that I drink with him, which put me in a foul mood," replied Jin Fengju indifferently. Once the court attire was properly put on, he turned to leave. However, he stopped at the door. He turned around to face Jiang Wanying and said, "Cousin, I may have taken more concubines in the past years. However, I have always respected and cared for my dear cousin. I hope you will remember the affection we have shared over the years. It would do you well to not squander those feelings."

"Cousin, why are you saying this all of a sudden?" Jiang Wanying was shocked. She rushed over to Jin Fengju, who merely smiled indifferently at her. "It is nothing. I am merely speaking on a whim. That's right, the allocation for Night Breeze Pavilion appears to be a lot less. So pay more attention in the future and do not let this happen again. Right, it is cold outside. You should head back inside. I am leaving for court."

After Jin Fengju left, Jiang Wanying's personal maid, Qiu Xia, trotted over anxiously, "Madam, what is the Master saying? Is this because of what we have done? Could it be possible that he knows something? Xing'er clearly said that she saw Master fuming with anger when he made his way to Night Breeze Pavilion. But… but why did he not mention it today?"

Jiang Wanying's complexion changed a few times. Finally, she said, "It does not matter. If Prince Lie had approached Lord Husband, that means the matter has been revealed. He must have gone to Night Breeze Pavilion to inquire about that woman's crime. Unfortunately, that hateful Fu'shi's tongue is as flexible as a reed, and must have turned her crime into some sob story. That is why Lord Husband specifically told me to not short them in the future."

"But… but, what of Master's other words? Even if Madam has shorted Night Breeze Pavilion's allocation, isn't it due to Master's lack of care? Why would the Master speak of his affections as though it is all in the past? Surely the allocation of things cannot warrant such heavy words?" Qiu Xia continued anxiously.

Jiang Wanying nodded slowly. "Yes, such heavy words would not happen merely over the monthly allocation. Prince Lie had invited Lord Husband to drink with him. How long would that last? Two hours? After that, Lord Husband hurried back. Just what kind of person is our Lord Husband? Merely half a day passed, but it was enough for him to understand some things. He had spoken such words to me, clearly because he was suspicious of me." As she spoke, she studied her nails intently, as though there were some interesting little bugs on them.

"Then… then, what should we do?" Qiu Xia was on the verge of panic. "If Master knows that Madam is the one responsible for this, w-wouldn't he…"

"Why are you panicking?" Jiang Wanying's stern voice cut through Qiu Xia's stammering. "Useless thing, you can barely birth half a thought in your head, but always panic at crucial times. What are you afraid of? Though this matter was indeed done by me, there will always be others to carry the guilt. Just be sure to cover our tracks cleanly, and fix up your plucked chicken look."

"C-carry the guilt?" Qiu Xia was shocked. However, Jiang Wanying's calm smile soon boosted her confidence and enlightenment dawned on her. She crowed with delight, "C-could it be… that's right, Madam must have long been prepared! This maid is too stupid and never thought of this. This is excellent, no matter how angry the Young Marquis was, how could he…" she covered her mouth and nearly vibrated with glee.

Jiang Wanying nodded gently. A while later, she suddenly smiled and murmured, "Be sure not to short their allocations? Dear Cousin, you must have been blinded by that tub of lard. They have done such a terrible thing already and yet you believe they still have a future within the marquisate? I'm afraid you are the only one who could tolerate them, but the rest of the clan may not swallow this insult well. Humph, humph…"

Let's speak of Jin Fengju's side for now.

He arrived at the palace without incident. Nothing exciting happened during morning court, and the ministers had nothing to report, and thus, they dispersed quickly. He was walking out of the palace when he heard someone calling his name. He looked back and saw Prince Rong panting as he ran up. Jin Fengju hastily put on a smile and hurried over to meet with the prince to say, "Brother-in-law, what's this? If others saw you, they would say that you have abandoned your royal manners again."

Prince Rong came up, still panting lightly, and gave Jin Fengju a once over before saying in an off voice, "Are you alright?"

"Alright? What could be wrong?" Jin Fengju was also not sure what was going on. "Brother-in-law, have you been drinking again? Are you still drunk?"

"No, I heard that you and Old Eight were together yesterday. I thought that he must be looking for you to settle the matter of Xu Shifan's fall. Since you're fine, I am relieved." Prince Rong said even as his gaze was fixed upon Jin Fengju.

Jin Fengju laughed and shook his head, "Brother-in-law, there's no need to look at me like that. He merely forced me into a drinking session." How could he reveal private family matters to Prince Rong? Still, afraid that Prince Rong would become suspicious of him, he gave some small excuse for yesterday's actions, omitting his household matter. This brother-in-law of his had always been open-minded, and would not make him feel too bad about the matter.

"Oh, so it's only a small matter, ah. Well, it's good that it's mostly solved now. That Old Eight is no simpleton. Try to have fewer dealings with him in the future," said Prince Rong kindly. "Well, are you busy now? If you're not busy, why not accompany this king to the palace for a drink?"

"No, I have something that needs to be taken care of back home today. I shall bring some good wine to Brother-in-law's place someday soon and drink our fill." Jin Fengju said with a smile and a salute.

"I know you say this just to pacify me. Ever since our two families married, I have lost count of how many times I heard you say this, and have yet to see it happen." Prince Rong muttered with some dissatisfaction as he turned his head away. Jin Fengju knew that this was just his normal attitude and just smiled, not at all annoyed.

"Come, let us go. Though the road is not good with so much heavy snow, moving slowly along the streets will allow us to observe the lives of the people," Jin Fengju tightened his overcoat, placed his hands behind his back and said to Jin Ming, "Have you managed to get to the heart of the matter? How was Third Brother Zhang revealed? Also, has Ningdu Palace taken any action? Did you receive news from Yan Xi yet? Has there been any movements at the marquisate?"

Jin Ming answered, "There has been no movement yet." Then, with a smile, continued, "There's no need for Master to overthink. After Master's reminder to Second Madam, as a smart and sophisticated person, surely she would understand the important points? Now that she realises that Master knows what is happening, surely she would not dash her eggs against rocks [1] and still carry out her schemes against Master's wish?"

"I hope so." Jin Fengju sighed. "Sometimes, when people become greedy, it is difficult for them to think coherently. I still remember, back when she was a child, she had been a kind and sweet girl. When she saw an ant, she would reproach it soundly as she escorted it back to its nest. After our marriage, I still felt that she was very good. Although her shrewdness and intelligence were beyond my expectations, with me busy with court matters, I happened to need such a person to look after the home.

But slowly, as time went by, I found myself unable to recognise her any longer. Her words and deeds could no longer be described with the words 'smart' or 'capable' anymore and I am forced to divert some energy to guard my household and ensure that she restrains herself. Otherwise, do you think Concubine Xu or Concubine Huo's children could be born safely? Fortunately, she settled down a lot after that. Unexpectedly, after I showed a little affection for Qiuning, once again, she…"

Jin Fengju shook his head and let out a long sigh. He continued emotionally, "After I parted with her in our childhood days, it must have been close to ten years since we last saw each other. I did not expect her to remain the same, but had not expected her to become someone so different either. Enough, enough about that, I hope that today's reminder will remind her of 'the many years of husband and wife's affection' between us. Otherwise, with my promise to Qiuning, I would have no choice but to pull down some of her face and prestige."

Suddenly, Jin Ming said, "Huh? Isn't that Yan Xi? He… he seems to be running over, looks like…" instead of finishing the rest of his sentence, he merely shook his head slightly.

"Well? Has your Madam gone to Night Breeze Pavilion?" Jin Fengju did not look surprised at all as he went straight to the main point the moment he opened his mouth.

"To reply to Master, Madam did not go to Night Breeze Pavilion. Elder Madam was the one who sent someone to the Night Breeze Pavilion, and had someone invite Second Young Madam Ning (aka Fu Qiu'Ning') to her courtyard," replied Yan Xi with a respectful salute. He observed his Master from the corner of his eye. After many years as a servant boy, he understood that something vital must have been happening within the marquisate. Moreover, it looked like the Young Marquis intended to display his power.

"The Elder Madam?" Jin Fengju frowned. He said in a low voice, "Looks like mother intends to intervene? Not bad, this is indeed a very dependable mountain to lean on." He quickened his pace and called for Jin Ming. "Come, we must return quickly."

"Yes." Jin Ming and Yan Xi answered as they hastily followed Jin Fengju.

At that time, contrary to Jin Fengju's expectations, Fu Qiuning was not at Madam Jiang's place. She was, instead, visiting the Health & Longevity Court along with the two children.

"This humble woman pays respects to Old Ancestor."

"This grandchild pays respects to Great Grandmother."

The group of three, mother and children alike, paid their respective greetings to Old Madam. The old lady was so happy that she could barely close her mouth as she laughed and crowed, "Good! Good! Good! Rise, all of you, we are all one family. Why such formality?"

She called for a maid to bring a chair for Qiuning and have the two great-grandchildren sit by her on the kang. After settling the children down, she looked at Fu Qiuning and said, "You have never liked coming to the inner court. Why are you here today? It snowed heavily yesterday and the roads are not good for travelling. I have already sent maids to each house to let everyone know that they need not come to offer their greetings today. I was certain you would not come, and had not sent anyone to inform you thus. Who would have thought I'd see you here today?"

"Indeed," Fu Qiuning smiled warmly. "Lord Husband chided this humble woman last night for not paying my respects to the Old Ancestor for a long time and bade this humble woman visit today. I believe Elder Madam and Second Madam shall be here shortly, therefore, this humble woman shall return first…"

"Why would you return? It is so rare for you to visit and yet you wish to conveniently leave right after? "The Old Madam laughed jovially. "Did you not hear me just now? No one would be coming today. I happened to be bored and you appeared at just the right time. Come, since you are here, have a look at my plants and tell me if I am looking after them right."

"Word has it that Old Ancestor paid great attention to them day after day. It is their blessing to be taken care of by Old Madam. If Old Madam wishes it, when New Year comes and the flowers start budding, this humble woman will bring a few more pots over. As plants that can be made into spices, their flowers will smell especially good."

"Yes, I know. That woman was the best at making incense when she was alive," said Old Madam Jin, clearly thinking back to the past. "Aside from flowers, her garden was filled with herbs and spice plants." There was a hint of a sigh in her voice.

Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps came from beyond the courtyard. Old Madam Jin looked up curiously [a], "Who could it be? Did I not already inform everyone there's no need to pay their greetings? Why is it that more people appearing today?"

"Old Ancestor has very good ears. This humble woman heard that most older people lose their hearing quickly. To think that Old Ancestor could still hear the sounds of footsteps from the courtyard, how exceptional." Fu Qiuning said with respect and a moderate amount of flattery.

Cheered by this flattery, Old Madam laughed out loud as she protested, "No need for such compliments. I'm already at such an age, even if I wish to do something, I am constrained by this old waste of a body. You say my ears are good, but I shall tell you now, my eyes are sharper still. I am very good at telling the good from the bad at just a glance with eight or nine times accuracy."

"If that is so, isn't Old Ancestor's talent wasted here? The Grand Inquisitor should enlist your help to examine their prisoners and tell the wronged from the guilty. Wouldn't the marquisate achieve great merit that way?" Fu Qiuning teased with a smile.

[a] The Old Madam howled with laughter at that, "You dare to tease me? You certainly know how to flatter. I had been wondering why Fengju had been so lively lately. I dare say it is all due to you."

As the two continued to speak, the people in the courtyard finally arrived at the door. The servant girl pushed the curtain apart to announce, "Old Madam, Elder Madam, and Second Madam have arrived."

"Yo, did I not say that there's no need to give your greetings today? Why are you here now?" Old Madam Jin looked a little surprised to see Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying enter, still wearing their cloaks. Their eyes fixed upon Fu Qiuning's person immediately.

Fu Qiuning stood up and saluted respectfully to Madam Jiang, saying, "Greetings, Elder Madam Jiang." The two children also got off the kang and earnestly greeted their grandmother.

"I dare not receive your salutations, just how capable are you, ah? Do you still need to salute the likes of me?" Madam Jiang unexpectedly sneered. She immediately turned to Old Madam Jin, "Old Ancestor, your daughter-in-law needs to speak with this Fu'shi. We cannot have her remain with Old Ancestor. This daughter-in-law shall play cards with Old Ancestor on a later date to make amends."

The astonishment on Old Madam Jin's face had disappeared by then. She leaned back on her cushions and leisurely said, "What can be so urgent, to not even have time to play cards with me? I can see from your face that something unpleasant has happened. Has Qiuning done something?"

Madam Jiang's voice was filled with hatred as she said, "Old Ancestor, this kind of matter would only anger you in vain if spoken out loud. This daughter-in-law shall report the matter to you personally at a later date. For now, I shall take this slut back and question her to her face." With that, she turned to Fu Qiuning, clearly about to order the servants to drag Fu Qiuning to her courtyard.

"No need for such words. You believe I'm too old to take charge of household matters, is that it?" Old Madam slowly sat up, her eyes fixed on Madam Jiang, a hint of anger rising from her countenance.

Seeing that the situation was getting out of hand, Jiang Wanying hastily interrupted, "To reply to Old Madam, Elder Madam has no such intentions. She is afraid that Old Ancestor's health will suffer a blow if angered. Elder Madam intends to thoroughly inquire into the matter before making a succinct report. In truth… in truth, what Fu'shi did was so heinous that when this granddaughter-in-law first heard it, my world nearly spun out of place."

"Is that so? Very well, Ming Yu, Luo Cui, you two stay behind. The rest of you leave this room and stay far away," Old Madam Jin ordered. After the various maids and servants had shuffled off, she turned to the people standing before her. "I have already lived up to this age and experienced many things. What news cannot enter my ears? Even if Fu'shi had done some heaven-defying sin, you may give me the details. If she has sinned, I shall not go light on the punishment. However, she had also raised two motherless children on her own, proving her heart of gold. Moreover, they have also been fatherless until recently.

I shall not allow others to slander or frame her either. You have always been cautious in your conduct. I believe that you would not have created such a great fuss unless you have ironclad evidence. If that is so, let me hear your case. I shall be the judge. No matter what, I am still the Old Ancestor of this household. I am neither deaf nor blind, nor am I senile yet."

Her voice sharpened by the end of her speech.

Jiang Wanying secretly gritted her teeth. She had long known that Old Madam Jin favoured Fu Qiuning. However, she never imagined that on the very day they decided to persecute her, Fu Qiuning would suddenly visit Health & Longevity Court to pay her respects. She and Madam Jiang had discussed the matter together, and, fearing that Jin Fengju would protect Fu Qiuning once he returned from court, they had no choice but to press forward.

As women of the family, they had to obey the so-called "three obedience and four virtues" [1]. Although they were the mother and wives of the Young Marquis, they could not overrule him. However, they had solid evidence for Fu Qiuning's case. Thus, after discussing the matter, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law pair decided to take their chances and went straight to the Health & Longevity Court.

Meanwhile, Concubine Xu and Concubine Huo, who loved to gloat over others' misfortune were more than eager to join in the fun when they heard that Fu Qiuning was about to be driven out of the marquisate.

"To reply to Old Madam, this… this cheap slut, this slut of a woman had hidden the fact that she had been selling the fruits and flowers within Night Breeze Pavilion for years! Perhaps counting on the fact that no one inquires after the place, these three outrageous women tarnished the reputation of the marquisate by selling not only the produce of the courtyard but also their embroideries. In fact, a large number of embroideries have been made and sold every year!

Right now, everyone within the Capital knows that the wife of the Young Jin Marquis has been treated harshly by the marquisate to the point that she had to secretly sell her embroideries to make a living, causing the marquisate to lose face…"

Madam Jiang's eyes looked like they were about to spit fire as she pointed at Fu Qiuning and hatefully spat, "You cheap bitch, you slut, when you married into our marquisate, your despicable old father was the hateful one, pushing a slut like you into our house to humiliate us. Unexpectedly, your heart is even more vicious than your old father's. How dare you use such a disgraceful method to ruin the reputation of this marquisate?

You… you did this, how do you expect my son to hold his head up before his peers and the emperor in the future? You… you have nothing but snakes and scorpions in your belly!" she howled, tears rolling down her face.

Beside her, Jiang Wanying stood with her head raised, a pillar of dignity and calm as she added venomously, "Fu'shi, you still have the cheek to stand before Old Ancestor and Elder Madam. Do you not know shame?"

The words were so shocking that even Old Madam Jin had to sit up with a start. She stared at Fu Qiuning and asked sternly, "Qiuning, are they speaking the truth?"

Fu Qiuning lowered her head. [b] She knelt down before Old Madam. The two children scrambled to kneel behind her as well. After a moment, Fu Qiuning said, "It is true."

Old Madam Jin nearly choked on her breath. She stared at Fu Qiuning with shock and anger. [c] Dimly, she thought: What happened? Was I wrong about Qiuning after all? Am I wrong to encourage Fengju to pursue her?

Just then, the twins cried out and crawled forward on their knees, "[d] Great-grandmother! Don't blame Mother! It's us, it's our fault. Punish us instead, if not for us, mother would never have… never have done any of that!"

"Feng'er, Jiao'er, come here," Fu Qiuning ordered. [b]

Her stern voice shook Old Madam Jin out of her runaway thoughts. [e] She looked at the frightened children before her and had a sudden terrible premonition. If Fu Qiuning had intended to plead for leniency, she would have let the children continue to cry and beg in her place, maybe even adding her voice into the crying and pleading. Instead, she had called the children back sternly after admitting her sins.

Obviously, the matter was more complicated than meets the eye.

"Since the children had shown filial piety by pleading on your behalf, you may stand up and speak," said Old Madam Jin dispassionately.

Jiang Wanying appeared dissatisfied and was about to argue when Old Madam Jin glanced over to say, "Wan girl, do not be impatient. Your husband was at Night Breeze Pavilion last night. Therefore, he more than likely knew about the matter. I want him to give me his account of the matter. For now, I wish to hear what Qiuning has to say."

Jiang Wanying felt as though her hands and feet had gone cold. She had not expected the Old Madam to protect Fu Qiuning to this extent. She turned and saw that Madam Jiang's face was practically blue with anger, with flames still flaring in her eyes, obviously chafing for this opportunity to rid herself of this thorn in her flesh. Jiang Wanyin's fist unclenched a little at the sight.

"To reply to Old Ancestor, from the moment this humble woman entered Night Breeze Pavilion, no one had ever inquired after this humble woman's well-being. Fortunately, allocations of rice and flour were still quite regular. Together with the clothes and cloth from this humble woman's dowry, this humble woman managed to keep warm and stave off hunger. Even so, this humble woman's resources were gradually dwindling.

This humble woman's resources had already been stretched to the limits when Lord Husband suddenly tasked this humble woman to raise his two children. Perhaps it was the hunger, the cold, or the prospect of having married a husband who had uncaringly left this humble woman alone on her wedding night, or of having to raise two unwanted children on diminishing resources that was… [a] that was… when… when this humble woman resorted to… drastic measures. This humble woman thought that it must be better to just die than to take on more suffering and humiliation."

[b] As Fu Qiuning spoke, she grasped the children's hands tightly. Her voice was tight with emotion as she continued, "Unexpectedly, when Aunt Yu brought the twins over, this humble woman… realised a terrible thing. Though this humble woman's life was lonely and fraught with shame, it was still better, far better than the lives endured by the little children.

This humble woman can still recall that very day. It was not long after the beginning of spring, the chill was still in the air when this humble woman opened the door and two little children dressed in rags and covered in grime were standing at the doorstep. When this humble woman approached them, the little children threw themselves at this humble woman's feet and begged to be given work, fearful of being scolded or beaten.

This humble woman was at first, too shocked to react. How could these beggarly-looking children belong to such a marquisate? There was no piece of intact skin on their stick-like arms. Old Madam, back then, they were barely three years old, ah. This humble woman could not believe the sight of old and new injuries on such tiny children. At times, I wondered how they had survived…"

Tears streamed down Fu Qiuning's cheeks as she told her story. Beside her, the two children sobbed as they too were haunted by those miserable days.

The Old Ancestor aside, even Madam Jiang had not expected to hear that the twins had been living such terrible lives. The ladies' faces had turned pale.

"This humble woman truly had no choice. The Young Marquis paid a visit on the day the children arrived, said a few words and simply left us to our devices. This humble woman understands that she will never have a place in this marquisate due to Grandfather and Father's evil intentions. However, these children are innocent. They are even the Young Marquis' own flesh and blood.

Though this humble woman had given up on life, how could I give up on the children's lives? This humble woman feared the children might have suffered muscle and bone damage. If they had internal injuries, they might even die… This humble woman had no choice but to secretly pawn whatever dowry or jewellery for money to purchase internal and external medicine. Fortunately, though they had been beaten by sticks, the children were robust enough and there was no need to invite a doctor."

"When the Young Marquis had condemned this humble woman to fend for herself, this humble woman had intended to live on the remaining grain and food before slowly starving to death. This could be regarded as this humble woman's way of settling accounts with the marquisate. A way to atone for her Father's and Grandfather's sins. Unexpectedly, this woman was suddenly given responsibility over two little lives.

If this humble woman were to pass away, the children would be sent to the village. This humble woman had spent years in the village before and intimately knew what sort of hard life they would suffer. If Feng'er and Jiao'er were sent away, they would not even have a mother care for them. That very night, this humble woman stood looking at the children's sleeping faces for a long time. Aunt Yu even said that they had never slept so soundly in their little lives. That was when this humble woman decided not to die.

I cannot die. I had to take care of the twins until they have grown up. In that time, perhaps Heaven would have mercy and Young Marquis would no longer dislike them for their birth mother. Even if the marquisate never acknowledges them, this humble woman would have considered her duty done once the children had grown up. Once that happened, this humble woman would no longer care whether she live or die.

Even so, this humble woman was confined within Night Breeze Pavilion. We were not even allowed to set foot into Yong Cui Garden. Even if we were to reach out for assistance, who within the marquisate would lend a hand to a mother and children from Night Breeze Pavilion? Helpless and desperate, this humble woman had little choice but to… to… take a desperate risk…"

Tears continued to flow as Fu Qiuning sobbed out her explanation until even Old Madam Jin's eyes were shining with moisture. Seeing the children's trembling figure, she choked out, "My poor children. How you must have suffered. It is all the fault of your arrogant and self-important father back then. You just wait, Great-grandmother will punish him."

[Gumi: *rolls eyes*]

"Old Ancestor, your honourable self has heard this humble woman's explanation. This humble woman had given the Young Marquis the same answer. It is fine to beat or kill this humble woman, so long as the children… this humble woman begs Old Ancestor to shield them and treat them well. They are the Young Marquis' flesh and blood. Old Ancestor only needs to look after them until they have grown up. There is no need to confer riches or treasures to them, only peace and safety. So long as this promise is fulfilled, this humble woman is willing to peacefully descend to the nine springs."

After speaking, she suddenly rushed for the sewing basket and seized up a pair of scissors. Fu Qiuning aimed the sharp end at her neck, shocking Old Madam Jin to the point of shouting, "Quick! Quick! Someone snatch those away!"

"What is happening? [d] What's all this crying and screaming?" Jin Fengju stepped through the curtains just in time to see Fu Qiuning about to stab her throat with a pair of scissors. He quickly grabbed the scissors and threw them back into the sewing basket. He continued to hold her as he said, "[d] What is going on? Why are you seeking death? Yesterday you were still so steady, so why are you trying to kill yourself today?"

Fu Qiuning suddenly 'collapsed into tears'. "It was true that Young Marquis had confronted this humble woman yesterday. However, that was before this humble woman realised that Elder Madam, Old Ancestor and all the sisters know my shame. What face does this humble woman have to live on? Fortunately, fortunately, the children have received Lord Husband's favour. Thus, this humble woman can now leave the world peacefully."

How could Jin Fengju not know that Fu Qiuning was merely play-acting? [d] While he secretly laughed at her excellent performance, he played his part and said righteously, "How could you die over such a small matter? What happened to the courage that brought you through the many years of raising these children with limited resources? Moreover, doesn't the root of the problem lie with me, the despicable man who abandoned you and the children? If you were to die, would the children even recognise me as their father?

Do you wish them to continue living while carrying hatred for the marquisate for the rest of their lives? [d] Besides, last night, I clearly told you that I would naturally solve this on my own and you do not need to let it weigh on your heart. Yet now, you are crying to death again, don't you trust your husband? If such a small matter is beyond me, would I not have died long ago from one of the emperor's mandated missions?

It sounded as though Jin Fengju was criticising Fu Qiuning, but he was really criticising her for 'distrusting' him and not for 'shaming' him. The sharp and intelligent Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying immediately caught the implications as their faces turned white.

Fu Qiuning appeared to have 'recovered her composure' at this. She stopped wailing to say, "This humble woman had lost her composure." She looked like she had lost all animation as she moved to the side, still in shock. Luo Cui quickly led her to a chair, helped straighten her hair and clothes and even personally fetched water for Fu Qiuning to wash her face.

"You're back early today, was there no court business this morning?" Old Madam Jin said after studying her grandson's face. He looked as composed and steady as ever, which settled her own heart.

"Yes, there was nothing going on during morning court, so this grandson came back early." Jin Fengju replied respectfully.

Old Madam Jin nodded and ponderously, "Earlier, your mother informed me that the matter of Qiuning selling her embroidery is already public knowledge and that the marquisate's reputation has been seriously tarnished. You appear to know about this and already have a solution in mind. Could this be true?"

"Yes, Old Ancestor, please be at ease. This grandson had already set things in motion. A reliable family has been found and paid off. An official from the Ning Government Office has also been found. The official story is that this grandson had asked the Ning Government Office to investigate the rumours that have been spreading recently, tarnishing the reputation of the marquisate. Today, the investigator found the family who had admitted to spreading these rumours in order to sell more of their embroidery.

They have since been imprisoned and found guilty. Naturally, the imprisonment was merely a show. This grandson has already arranged for them to live abroad and had even given them money for the trouble. This grandson believes that word about this matter should start spreading tomorrow, preserving our marquisate's reputation."

Old Madam Jin nodded, "That is all very good. How well do you know that family? Have you investigated them thoroughly? Are they truly reliable? Don't let people bite you back at the end."

Jin Fengju laughed, "Old Madam, no need to worry, how could your grandson not understand this danger? The family had no way to live because their fields had been seized, cutting off their means of survival. This grandson happened upon them while hunting, took care of them secretly and even helped them get their fields back. They recognise this grandson as their saviour, but do not know my true identity, nor do they know how to repay this gratitude.

Today, when this grandson came to their door, they recognized me as their saviour and happily agreed to shoulder this blame. This grandson has also ordered Jin Ming to investigate this family's character and found them to be good. In fact, they have truly been selling Qiuning's embroidery from their shop for a long time, thus, their circumstances fit this matter perfectly."

Jin Fengju continued, "What's more, the whole matter was merely a rumour. It became a serious matter when people grew curious and gossiped over it. Now that a perfectly ordinary reason has been found, it should soon die down. Within two days, the original rumour will be buried and disappear soon after."

"You are right. Very well, help your wife up and escort her back safely. She has suffered a lot of grievances over the years. I am a little tired now, you are all dismissed. Fengju, after you have sent your wife back, go visit your mother. I'm afraid she must have some words for you. That should keep you busy enough, no need to come by my place." Old Madam Jin said as she supported her forehead in her hand. Granny Ming Yu hurried over to support her and helped her to lie back down onto the quilt behind her.

It could be said that Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying had marched over brimming with smug ambition. Who could have imagined that the outcome would turn out like this? Not only did Fu Qiuning escape unharmed, those cunning little brats even took advantage of the situation to earn a bottomless well of sympathy from Old Madam.

That alone was bad enough. More important was the way they were dismissed from Old Madam's courtyard. From Old Madam's final two sentences, it was obvious there were more meanings underlying the words. Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying knew in their heart of hearts that Old Madam was not stupid, Jin Fengju even less so. If the pair of old and young foxes decided not to let the matter rest, the two of them might have to suffer more loss of face in the future.

Jin Fengju held Fu Qiuning's hand as they walked out of the courtyard, together with the twins, Madam Jiang, Jiang Wanying and the group of concubines.

The courtyard was empty of servants that usually lined the place, awaiting orders from their masters and mistresses. Fu Qiuning's face was solemn even as Jin Fengju held her hand intimately. The faces of Elder Madam, Second Madam and the concubines were all very ugly.

How could the servants who noticed this entourage not draw certain assumptions? Bolts of frost pierced through their hearts as they mused: This Fu'shi, who had already won over Old Madam, has now obtained the Young Marquis' favour. Looks like we cannot underestimate this soft and weak-looking woman in the future.

"There's no need to hold my hand, it's… embarrassing." Fu Qiuning was [a] already getting used to receiving hostile gazes, but the amount of aggression she was getting was starting to go beyond uncomfortable to painful. It felt as though she was being stabbed in the back.

[a] Unfortunately, Jin Fengju merely tightened his hold on her hand and sniggered quietly as he leaned close to her ear, "Did I not ask you last night if you wish to make a fuss or maintain your peace? You have raised a scene by yourself, so why are you saying 'no' now?"

"The scene is already over. One could tell from the eyes of the people here that the Young Marquis had moved on behalf of this humble woman to strike the mountain and scare the tiger. This humble woman desires a life with less trouble and has no wish to enter the inner court. This much drama is more than enough." [a] Fu Qiuning said indifferently.

To the eyes of the people around them, it looked like the Young Marquis was being very affectionate with this 'Second Young Madam Ning', the former abandoned woman. What they did not realise was that these two were in the middle of a negotiation.

"One must see through a good deed till the end and send Buddha all the way to the West [1]. If you start a drama, naturally you must carry on till the end. Not to mention, have you already forgotten? We still need to shake things up a bit more so that news would reach Zhenjiang Palace."

With Jin Fengju [a] coercing her, Fu Qiuning had no choice but to keep walking with him until they reached the junction where most of the ladies would part. Jin Fengju stopped. Without turning around, he deliberately raised his voice to say, "Mother, Wanying, do head back first. I shall visit you after escorting Qiuning to Night Breeze Pavilion."

Without waiting for their reply, he left, still holding on to Fu Qiuning.

With such an obvious declaration, even the blind could see that the Young Marquis was very angry with the Second Madam over Fu'shi, to the point that even the Elder Madam caught some of the blame. The people around them were a little shocked as they sighed to themselves and thought: Looks like the winds of change are blowing through the inner court.

At the entrance of Night Breeze Pavilion, Fu Qiuning sent the children in first before shaking off Jin Fengju's hand, [a] resisting the urge to wipe her hand on her skirt. She then put her hands together and saluted him ceremoniously, "This humble woman thanks the Young Marquis for his assistance. It is enough to send this humble woman this far. This humble woman has done her best to cooperate. The Young Marquis has promised to visit the Elder Madam, this humble woman shall not see you off."

"Did I not say that I do not want you to call yourself 'this humble woman'? Why do you insist on this kind of behaviour? Really, this is called burning a bridge after you've crossed it, ah." Jin Fengju laughed. Then he sighed, "I have helped you to solve such a big matter, but you refuse to let me pass through your door. Well, since you have decreed it, I shall go. I do have a lot of matters to attend to." So saying, he turned and left.

[c] Fu Qiuning said nothing, but she thought: I would not be in this dilemma if it were not for you and your shitty grandmother. How could such words ever have passed my lips? Of all the shitty people in this world, I still have to depend on this arrogant shitty person to survive in this shitty era.

She turned around and had just reached the courtyard door when…

"Qiuning!"

[c] Fu Qiuning closed her eyes in despair. What now? However, she still turned around.

Jin Fengju suddenly gave her a thumbs up from a dozen paces away. A large grin adorned his face as he cupped his mouth and yelled, "Your crying scene was greatly performed, ah! I really have to admire you from now on!"

Heat suffused her face as [a] anger nearly choked her. She thought: So, it was all entertainment for you? I was fighting for my life, crying and scrambling for my life, and you think it's all a funny joke? [a] Hands clenched into fists, Fu Qiuning pressed her mouth together and whispered, "Just leave."

"Hahahaha…" Unexpectedly, Jin Fengju actually heard her, [a] and his reaction was to laugh at her misery. He continued to laugh as he said, "Why so angry? Aren't I leaving already?" Leaving that taunt behind, he continued laughing loudly as he strode away.

Fu Qiuning went straight back into the courtyard, her face still feeling hot. She had never seen Jin Fengju [d] acting this way before. Was this his true behaviour? After suppressing himself before his family, the emperor, and pretending to be a mature person, did he finally find someone he could bully openly? Half-despairingly, Fu Qiuning wondered if life would be better if she just ran away with the children.

The children… no, she had to endure. [d] So what if he taunts her? Wasn't it just some verbal suffering and mental games? She just… had to put up with it.

[d] Jin Fengju would be twenty-four this year. However, age does not equal maturity. He already married two wives and several concubines, had many children and was well regarded by the emperor. She could only hope that this taunting was an aberration of his behaviour and that the man entrusted with important duties did not have the disgusting habit of playing mind games with the women in his harem.

As for choosing a young man over wise and famous ministers, could it be that this old emperor liked the story of "Gan Luo Appointed As Minster" [2] so much that he believed that heroes arise from the youth ever since ancient times?

As her thoughts skipped over different topics, childish laughter disrupted her increasingly chaotic thoughts, "Mother, Mother, we heard Father laughing just now. Why is Father so happy? We have never seen him like that before?"

Fu Qiuning looked down and saw that it was Jin Changjiao and Jin Changfeng. They must have been worried about her and had been waiting for her by the courtyard door.

"Well, [a] your father works very hard. He must have been very stressed thinking up ways to save us just now. So, Feng'er and Jiao'er, be filial to Father when you grow up, but also strive to be sensible a bit earlier to help Father share the burden, understand?"

"We understand, we children must study hard, help Father and Mother share the workload early and be filial to Father and Mother." Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao replied in unison, apparently having secretly muttered many such words to each other during the week. Fu Qiuning felt quite comforted. No matter what kind of slag [a] Jin Fengju was, she still had to depend on him. He was [f] confident enough of his own attractiveness to keep clinging to his off-hand promise to her, which meant that he was not infallible. She still had some cards she could play. Regardless of whether he was sniffing after her virginity or merely infatuated over a novelty, she still has a slight upper hand here. At least, for now.

Jin Fengju left Night Breeze Pavilion, and after some thought, did not go back to Clear Soft Pavilion, instead, he went directly to Madam Jiang's courtyard.

"Elder Madam is chanting Buddhist sutras, she will come out soon." Madam Jiang's maid, Ju Rui, informed Jin Fengju as she served tea and snacks before shuffling to the side to stand quietly, awaiting orders.

As expected, a short while later, Madam Jiang came to the room, her face cool and indifferent. She cast a glance at Ju Rui and said, "Go out and keep watch. Let no one in."

Ju Rui acknowledged the order and retreated

Madam Jiang seated herself. Noticing that Jin Fengju had eaten a piece of dessert and had drunk some tea, her expression softened a little and she said in a tender voice, "What is it? Are you hungry? Were you in a hurry to go to morning court and missed breakfast?"

"Mother, do you feel better after repenting in the Buddhist Hall?" Instead of answering Madam Jiang's question, he continued to eat his snacks and smiled meaningfully at his mother.

"What nonsense are you saying?" Sure enough, Madam Jiang's face immediately paled. The hand holding Buddhist beads twitched and she shuddered.

"Fine, this son has given Mother a fright and is unfilial." Jin Fengju put the snacks down and sat upright. The slight mischief on his face had receded, replaced by his usual cold and solemn expression. He eyed Madam Jiang dispassionately and said, "As the saying goes, 'The person who did no wrong in life would not fear a midnight knock'. This son had merely spoken a single sentence, and yet Mother had…"

"Enough, just say whatever you want to say. Enough with these insinuations. Do you still recognise me as your own mother?" Madam Jiang shouted back. She had never received such words from her son, her expression grew uglier as she tried to sound stern.

"This son has always respected Mother. However, Mother was the one who had committed a sin. Therefore, Mother cannot blame this son for being unfilial. If Mother becomes clear-headed from the shock of this son's lack of filial piety and stopped doing things that deliberately hurt others, this son would be glad to love and respect Mother once again." Jin Fengju was not at all moved by Madam Jiang's temper tantrums. He responded calmly, indifferent as always. For a moment, Madam Jiang did not seem to know what to say.

"You… you still have the cheek to call yourself filial? Last time, when I would have you divorce that Fu'shi, did you even listen to me?" Unable to suppress her son with arguments, and suffering from minor effects of guilt, Madam Jiang reverted to employing her seniority and a past event to push forward.

"Mother, you should know that loyalty and filial piety [3] cannot exist side by side all the time. There are no dignified seven-foot-tall sons who dare not put loyalty before filial piety." Jin Fengju stood up, his expression solemn as he stared down at his mother. "Thus, if a mother would have her son harm the Heavens in the name of filial piety, the son still cannot abandon his conscience on reasons of filial piety."

"Have you forgotten the reason that Fu'shi married into our family? Divorcing that piece of wart would free our family of the anger and suffering that had been forced down our throats years ago. How did it turn into making you abandon your conscience?" Madam Jiang slapped the table, her eyes indignant as she glared at her son.

"The one who harmed me is Zhenjiang Palace, and not Fu'shi. She was sent here under the orders of her parents and the matchmaker's words. As a young girl, how could she resist? If you wish to condemn a helpless woman like her, then what about this noble son? A marquis' heir and first-class scholar, I had to obey my parent's arrangement to marry her in. If my parents had felt so humiliated by the arrangement back then, they could have chosen to struggle and engage in a death match [4] to show their dissatisfaction. Why swallow this anger?

Ever since she was married to me, I have not set foot in Night Breeze Pavilion for five years. Even so, she had done her best to bring up my twin children without complaint. Mother, this son confesses to being a cold and heartless person, a wretched being who abandoned his own children born out of my own mistakes. Now that I think back on it, regret and shame cannot even begin to describe my feelings or even make up for what I have done.

As a woman, can Mother truly say that Qiuning is not a virtuous wife? She has served me well, she has caused no shame, her character is virtuous, and of the Seven Offences [5], she does not have even half an offence. You want me to divorce her, but how can this son agree? If I were to agree, would the conscience of Heaven and Earth or Principles of Man spare us?"

Every word from Jin Fengju's mouth was eloquent and forceful, pushing Madam Jiang into a corner until she was speechless and have no grounds to refute. Jin Fengju continued, "Of Zhenjiang Palace's sin, this son naturally knows. This debt can never be simply written off. However, this son shall leave these words before Mother. Even if our two houses exist like water and fire, it has nothing to do with Qiuning. This son is only interested in her selfless love and sincere care for Feng'er and Jiao'er. Therefore, this son will love and respect her as the Official Wife and do my best to preserve her safety. Mother, surely you understand this son's meaning?" [6]
