Chloe had nearly reached the junkyard when she noticed an orange light breaking up its usual nighttime darkness. As she got closer, she noticed someone sitting near the light, now revealed to be a small fire. She approached with apprehension.
"What're you doing here?" Chloe asked.
Wilhelm took a long drag of his cigarette before responding.
"Thinking," Wilhelm responded softly, "Please sit."
"You want one?" Wilhelm asked, offering her a cigarette.
"Sure."
Wilhelm handed one to her and lit it for her.
"Hot girls don't light their own cigarettes."
"Sounds like something Rachel would say."
"I know," Wilhelm replied with a melancholic smile on his face.
"What're you thinking about?"
"Love and pain."
"You and me both."
Wilhelm then took a sip from his flask and handed it to Chloe.
"I'm sorry I didn't reach out to you, Chloe. I know you care about her, too. I just… didn't know what to say."
"I'm sorry too. It's a two way street."
"I haven't really been sleeping since she's gone missing. I have nightmares. I toss and turn all night. Can't get it out of my head."
"I'm not doing much better myself."
The two of them sat in silence for a while, smoking and drinking together.
"Chloe?"
"Yeah?"
"There's something I have to tell you. I searched Frank's trailer a while back and I found an unsent letter from Rachel. So, I.. put two and two together. You and Rachel were closer than I thought.."
"Yeah. We were together for a long time.. and turns out, she was fucking Frank behind my back."
"Once I realized you and Rachel were.. together, I felt guilty. I still feel guilty."
"About what?"
"It wasn't," Wilhelm explained, tears welling up in his eyes, "It wasn't just Frank."
"What are you saying?" Chloe asked, raising her voice.
"We had been hooking up since the beginning of last school year."
"What!?"
"I'm sorry, Chloe."
"Fuck you!" Chloe said, getting up to pace around.
Wilhelm stayed seated, staring at the fire.
"I was in love with her. She lied to me. Rachel is a user. She's always been a user."
"Take that back!"
"You know I'm right. She used me for sex and she used Frank for drugs. She used everyone around her. She actually loves you… just not as much as her vices."
"Fuck. You, Will."
Wilhelm shook his head.
"She's just like her mother."
Chloe flew into a rage and threw the closest object at him. Wilhelm didn't react other than simply ducking the bottle.
"That wasn't very nice. You really could've hurt me," Wilhelm said softly, "Rachel would be sad if you gave her second-favorite love interest a concussion."
Chloe didn't say anything, she just stood there, staring at him, fuming mad.
"I'm sorry this is how things turned out," Wilhelm said as he got up to leave, "You deserved better. Goodbye, Chloe Price. Do take care of yourself."
That went well, Chloe thought.
