Naoko tried to find Sesshomaru, but when a demon Lord doesn't want to be found, you won't find him. She sent word to her brother about Kagome and stayed West like she was supposed to. Every day that went by the more she started to pace. Every day that her Lord was gone was a day wasted in her mind.
"Are you worried for him?" She turned to see his father standing "No, yes."
"You are faithful," He said,
She turned away; she wasn't sure about that. "I am not sure if my faith is with the West or with her."
His father smiled slightly "All is well, either way, we tried, and that my dear is all we can do."
She turned to look at him "How did you know he would fall for her over all of us?"
He shrugged "I didn't know for sure when I picked her out."
"Then later?"
"Her will, her drive, her eyes, her power."
She raised an eyebrow "Those things almost got her killed."
"Hm, I suppose you are right."
She went back to looking into the far-off distance. "I don't understand what happened, she came back smelling just like him."
"His pride and his resolve not to be like me."
"Ahm"
Both Naoko and the Lord turned around to see a letter carrier "For you," He bowed and handed over the letter to Naoko. She looked at the Lord of the West, who nodded for her to open it. Naoko scanned the latter and then balled it up in her hand "Kagome has agreed to mate with my brother." Her heart picked up speed.
"Naoko, we have done what we can do. We can not force this."
"But it is a mistake; she will be unhappy."
"Perhaps not. Do you have little faith in your brother?"
She sighed, it did sound like she had no faith in her brother, didn't it. Plus, she had not been happy so what was to say this wasn't right.
"Will you not be unhappy?" He then asked her. She hadn't even thought about herself. Her lips pressed into a thin line. "Kagome and I are not the same."
"Perhaps she has taken to looking up to you."
Naoko tossed the letter. "I say again, Kagome and I are not the same."
"Will you still mate my son?"
"Do you think he will come back?"
"Yes," It was firm,
"I must unless he releases me."
"Why?" He then asked; she looked at him. "I know my place."
He titled his head; Naoko had been trained well "Then perhaps Kagome has learned hers?"
Naoko's mind yelled no. Kagome was a free bird, not a caged one, and she wanted Kagome to be free because deep down, she wished she could be free herself.
"Kagome is a free bird," She said,
"Yes, yes she is," He agreed. "And he is a predator."
She became confused by that statement and looked at him. But he began to walk off whistling a tune. Chirping brought her attention back outside, where birds were reacting to his song.
Naoko bit her lips again. "Maybe I can be a little bird, just for a bit."
That Naoko transformed and called out, spread her aura, and called for him. Instincts, regardless of how he really felt about her, should bring him back.
He was the last chance. If he still denied Kagome, then she would take her place and not say another word about it. But deep down, she hoped that she and Kagome could still be friends if they mated the wrong men.
Naoko had never had a real friend; go figure, it would be a Miko.
Naoko howled at the moon.
Her tune worked for when the moon was at its most high, a large white dog returned and howled beside her; the song was not happy.
