He could have killed McCoy there, in that cave, with no one to stop him. Spock had considered his human half the danger that threatened to steal away his control, that would not adhere to his Vulcan principles. Yet he was never more dangerous to his friends than when he was fully Vulcan. In which Spock and McCoy's failure to communicate is what drives the Triumvirate apart pre-TMP.

Doctor Leonard McCoy has just beamed aboard the Enterprise for the first time, as the new Chief Medical Officer. Of course introductions don't go as smoothly as he would have liked, though maybe this is better.

"We can handle this. After all," Kirk straightens up, and throws on a practiced grin. It's tight, hard to keep up, and extremely fake, but he can do this. They can do this. He places one hand on Spock's shoulder and the other on Bones'. "We are men of diplomacy."

After Sam's death, Jim's been suffering from nightmares. Spock and McCoy decide to ask what's causing his late-night pacing.
