Episode 34: Thomas and Trevor, Original Airdate: October 8th, 1986

It was a warm sunny day on the Island of Sodor. Thomas, Lucy, Howard, Tanya, Annie, and Clarabel were spending the day at the beach at North Tidmouth. Thomas and Howard had been working hard the past month and so Sir Topham Hatt had decided to award them with a day off, it was Thomas who suggested that they family spend a nice day at the beach, an idea that the others had accepted.

Thomas and Lucy were both building sandcastles when they both heard a familiar whistle. They both looked up to see Trevor's William Foster & Co. DCC Traction Engine cuffing along the beach, with Trevor Cole driving it and a group of happy children on the wooden seat bolted on. Trevor then stopped his traction engine and let the children off.

"Alright kiddies" said Trevor as their parents collected them, "next rides after lunch".

"See you Trevor" said a little boy.

"I had fun on your traction engine" said a little girl.

"You always know how to make our children happy" complimented a mother.

"Your always welcome and thank you" smiled Trevor.

The children and their parents then headed off to rescue their other beach activities. Trevor was just attempting to his traction engine before heading off the grab his lunch, he then noticed Thomas and Lucy coming towards him, he smiled and waved at them.

"Thomas, Lucy" greeted Trevor, "this is a surprise".

"It sure is Trevor" smiled Thomas, "fancy seeing you here. But then again this is your favourite beach after all".

"It sure is" said Trevor, "anyway I'm just about to grab a burger for lunch if you and Lucy are interested in joining me?".

"We'd love to" said Thomas as he turned to Lucy, "wouldn't we Lucy sweetie?".

"Yes please" said Lucy happily.

Thomas, Lucy, and Trevor then went to the burger shop that was located near the beach. They ordered two burgers and fries each and a children's meal for Lucy, they then sat down on a bench near the beach and began to eat.

"You know I remember when you first brought me to this harbour Thomas" said Trevor.

"That I do" replied Thomas as he looked at Lucy, "although I don't think that Lucy knows the story".

"Story?" asked Lucy excitedly.

"That's right a story sweetie" smiled Thomas to his daughter as he turned to Trevor, "you don't mind if I tell it do you Trevor?".

"Take it away Thomas" smiled Trevor.

"Right" said Thomas, "it was a month after Edward and Reverend Charles rescued your traction engine from Crock's Scrap Yard".

(Story Begins)

Trevor Cole enjoyed working and living in the vicarage orchard. His good friend, Edward Pettigrew visited him every day. However, Trevor didn't always have enough work to do, this of course made him feel down as he told Edward when he visited one day.

"I do like to keep busy all the time" he told Edward, "and I do like company, especially children's company".

Edward felt sorry for his friend and decided to tell him the news he had for him.

"Cheer up Trevor" smiled Edward kindly, "Sir Topham Hatt has work for you at his new harbour. I'm to take you to meet Thomas and Howard at Elsbridge".

"Ah" exclaimed Trevor happily, "a harbour, the seaside, children. That will be lovely".

After gaining permission from Reverend Charles Laxey, Edward brought a flatbed so that Trevor's traction engine could be loaded onto it. Trevor then hopped into Edward's K2's cab and together they set off to mee Thomas and Howard.

They arrived at Elsbridge where they met Thomas and Howard. They were on their way to the harbour with a trainload of metal pilings. They were needed to make the harbour wall firm and safe, they were driving pass the carriage shed when they noticed Edward and Trevor and stopped.

"Hello Thomas" greeted Edward.

"Hello there Edward" greeted Thomas, "who's this?".

"This is my friend Trevor" said Edward, "and this here is Trevor's traction engine".

"A what engine?" asked Thomas as he eyed it doubtfully.

"A traction engine son" explained Howard, "it runs on roads instead of rails".

"Could you two please bring me to the harbour?" asked Trevor, "Sir Topham Hatt has a job for me there".

"Yes of course" replied Thomas but he was still puzzled.

Workmen then coupled the flatbed with Trevor's traction engine to Thomas' train as Trevor hopped into Thomas' E2's cab. When everything was ready, they then set off on their journey.

"I'm glad that Sir Topham Hatt has a job for me" said Trevor, "I don't have enough work to do sometimes you know".

"Well, I'm glad that you have something to do when we get to the harbour" replied Howard, "but anyway Trevor where can your traction engine work if I may ask?".

"She can work anywhere" said Trevor, "in orchards, on farms, in scrapyards even in harbours".

"But she doesn't run on rails," said Thomas.

"She's a traction engine" said Trevor" said Trevor, "she doesn't need rails to be useful, just you wait and see".

Soon they reached the new harbour, and they did saw that everything confusion. Trucks had been derailed, blocking the line and stone slabs lay everywhere.

"We must get these pilings past, there are essential" said Howard as he turned to Trevor, "Trevor, we need you to drag them round this mess".

Trevor beamed; this was his chance to show Thomas how effective his traction engine was.

"Now you'll see Thomas" said Trevor confidently, "I'll soon show you what traction engines can do".

Trevor was as good as his word; the workmen unloaded his traction engine from the flatbed and soon set to work. He dragged the pilings clear with chains and pulled them into position. He even helped to clear the stone slabs that were blocking the line and rerail some of the derailed trucks.

"Who needs rails" Trevor hummed cheerfully to himself.

Later Thomas and Howard brought Annie, Clarabel, Tanya, and Lady to the harbour to meet Trevor. When Thomas saw that Trevor had managed to clear up the harbour, he was impressed.

"Now I understand how useful a traction engine can be" said Thomas.

"That you can son" replied Howard.

Annie and Clarabel's coaches were full of children. Trevor gave them rides along the harbour and the beach; he liked this job best of all.

"He's very kind," said Annie.

"He reminds me of Thomas" added Clarabel.

"That he does" replied Lady.

Everyone had a wonderful time. Everyone was sorry however when it was time for Trevor to leave, the workmen loaded his traction engine back onto the flatbed and Thomas and Howard then pulled it to the junction.

After unloading it at the junction, Thomas noticed a small tear in Trevor's eye. He didn't want his new to feel sad and so he decided to whistle to cheer him up.

"Don't worry Trevor" said Thomas kindly, "I'll come and visit you if I can".

"Besides the vicar will look after you" said Howard, "there's plenty of work for you at the orchard".

"But who knows, we may need you again at the harbour someday," said Thomas.

This made Trevor feel a lot better.

"That would be wonderful" said Trevor as he then drove his traction engine home.

That evening Trevor lay in bed thinking of the wonderful day that he had. He remembered his new friend Thomas, the harbour and most of all, the children. Then he went happily to sleep in the guesthouse at the bottom of the orchard.

(Story Ends)

"And ever since then Trevor has been needed at the harbour on occasion" said Thomas as he finished his story.

"Now that was a very nice story Thomas" comment Trevor as he looked at his watch, "well would you look at that, its ride time again. Would you two like a ride".

"Yes please" said Lucy as she clapped her hands.

Thomas smiled at his young daughter as they both followed Trevor back to his traction engine.

And done, this has to be the shortest chapter I have ever written, but all in all I'm please with how it turned out. In response to zachhoevel's questions is that yes, series 4 & 5 won't be stories with the exception of the first four of course and the answer is yes Lucy will be growing up. Anyway please be so kind as to leave a review and as always, see you all next time.
