Peace and quiet.
That is what went through Piccolo's head as he sat on the top of a mountain. A sea of mountains surrounded the area, as far as the eye could see.
The snow was light, and the air cold. However, it was not a sensation that Piccolo felt.
He levitated just inches above the ground, laser focused on his meditation. He could feel his aura surrounding his body, the sensation of its heat being more than enough to keep his body warm from the weather. Steam slowly rose from the ground, the snow it had formed from having evaporated at the warmth exuded by the energy surrounding Piccolo's figure.
His eyes were seemingly sewed shut, his face calm and peaceful. Were he laying down, it would be easy to assume he had fallen asleep.
The energy surrounding him clung closely to his body, gently flowing to the top all the way to his turban, similarly to how a slow moving river would calmly make its way down a stream.
There he sat, alone in the mountain.
No danger to be had.
No sound to be made, other than the gentle wind.
Peace and quiet.
"Yo! Piccolo!"
'Damn it…' Piccolo thought, inwardly groaning. He turned to see a familiar smiling face, Spiky black hair and a strong muscular build wearing an orange gi.
"I really hate it when you do that." Piccolo spoke, his voice slightly irritated. Goku let out a laugh while bashfully rubbing the back of his head. The instant transmission was as useful as it was annoying, in Piccolo's opinion. Especially when wielded by someone as oblivious as Goku. While it made for a quick escape whenever there was danger, it also tended to interrupt peaceful moments.
Like the one he was having right now.
"Man! It's a good thing our energy keeps us warm, huh? Else we'd be freezing!" Goku said.
Piccolo landed gently on the ground, his cape flowing lightly in the wind. He crossed his arms and gave a deadpan look.
"What brings you here, Goku?" He asked.
Goku turned to face Piccolo, giving him his full attention.
"Well, I was wondering if you could help me out with something." He said.
Piccolo shrugged. "What is it?" He inquired.
Goku walked toward Piccolo as he spoke. "Gohan is training a student and I think it would be an awesome idea if you went in there and helped."
Piccolo raised a brow.
"Gohan has a student?" He asked curiously.
While Piccolo knew Gohan had begun to once again routinely train, in case another threat were to arrive, he never truly imagined he would have a student of his own. Not only due to his lifestyle but also for his overall lack of interest in martial arts.
"Yeah! But he has to go work a lot. Sometimes Videl likes to help out, but she can only teach him so much. Since Gohan is working today I was wondering if maybe you could give them a visit and see what you can teach him." Goku said eagerly.
Piccolo looked contemplative, looking down while considering it. It had been a while since anything interesting had happened. Not to mention that both Gohan and Videl were probably being too soft on this kid. It would be fascinating to see what would happen if he went in there and changed things up a bit.
Also, He wanted to see just what kind of boy had managed to gain Gohan's attention. Enough to be trained by him no less.
Piccolo looked up at Goku.
"How did he know that Gohan was a martial artist?" He asked.
It was a little surprising that this mystery boy had not only found out that Gohan was a martial artist, but a strong one as well. Especially with the lengths he went to in order to hide his identity. Most people ended up buying the crap about Mr. Satan being the one who stopped Cell and Buu.
"Oh he didn't. I introduced him to Gohan. He asked to be my student first but I ended up giving him to Gohan to work on his technique and strategy." Goku explained.
'Ah. That makes more sense.' Piccolo thought. 'It's likely that footage from our battle at the tournament was saved and this kid probably saw it.' he rationalized.
However, that footage would have contained a lot of scenes of them blasting ki attacks and performing fantastic abilities.
I.E. His size alteration and his ability to stretch his limbs.
Most of the public believed that these were simply stage tricks, as Mr. Satan and Videl once had.
Meaning that in order for this boy to have been interested in having Goku as a teacher, he would have needed to believe in the existence of ki, if not be a ki user himself.
Not to mention the fact that it took quite a bit of intelligence, bravery, and intuition for him to have found out about where Goku lived.
Piccolo, needless to say, was interested in this boy.
He looked up at Goku and nodded.
"All right. I'll see what I can teach this kid. What's his name?" He asked.
Goku grinned at him "Really? You'll do it?!" goku asked, elated.
Piccolo nodded. "Yes, Bu-"
"ALRIGHT! Thanks man! You rock." He cheered, patting him on the shoulder. His cheerful face quickly switched to a serious one, intent on concentrating.
Before Piccolo could repeat his question, Goku had already placed his fingertips on his forehead and used instant transmission.
leaving the mountain with no trace of them ever having been there other than their footprints along with the evaporated spot Piccolo had meditated over.
In an instant, just outside of Gohan's house, Goku and Piccolo appeared. Videl, who had just opened the door, looked over at the pair and recoiled in shock before bringing a hand to her chest.
"Hey, Videl! What's up?" Greeted Goku nonchalantly.
Videl looked at her father-in-law and smiled. She was wearing a standard white karate uniform, her black belt wrapped tightly around her waist.
"Good morning, Si- I mean Goku." She greeted, slightly tripping over her sentence. She had to keep reminding herself that Goku cared little for formalities and had nonchalantly told her that she could call him by his given name if she desired.
She looked over Goku and saw a familiar figure standing behind her father-in-law.
"Hello there! Sorry I didn't see you, 'Mr. Piccolo'" She said, grinning cheekily.
Piccolo gave an annoyed groan. For reasons he could not explain, Videl often enjoyed teasing him by calling him the nickname Gohan had given and still called him to this day. While Gohan often called him that out of respect, Videl did it in a playfully mocking manner.
"Are you okay Videl? I heard you gasp." Came a voice from inside the home.
Videl looked behind her.
"I'm fine, just a bit startled. Goku used the instant transmission and took me by surprise." She explained.
"Goku's here?" The voice asked excitedly.
Out came Gon, also sporting a karate uniform identical to Videl only smaller along with an eager grin on his face.
"Hey Goku! Who's this?" He asked, seeing Piccolo stand next to him.
"Hiya Gon! This here is Piccolo." Goku told the young boy.
He turned his head to look at his green friend, The latter eyeing Gon curiously.
"Piccolo, this is Gon, The kid I told you about." Goku said, introducing him to his student for the day. Gon gave a grin at Piccolo, waving at him enthusiastically.
"Hi Piccolo! Nice to meet you." Gon greeted. Piccolo gave him a curt nod in return.
Videl looked over at Goku and walked closer to him.
"So what brings you boys here? Are you going to join us for training? Me and Gon were just about to head out to the desert." She questioned the older man.
Goku shook his head. "Not me. Just Piccolo. Hope you don't mind but I asked him if he could join you guys. I thought he'd make a good teacher for Gon." Goku said, explaining his actions to Videl.
"Oh I don't mind at all. I think it'd be great if 'Mr.' Piccolo came and joined us!" She said teasingly, agreeing with the idea.
Piccolo quietly growled at her, while she gave him a sickeningly sweet smile in return.
Goku nodded his head in affirmation. "Great! Now that that's all settled I gotta get going! See ya later!" he said, moving his fingers to his forehead.
"Hey wait! Are you sure you don't want t-" Videl tried to say before Gokue left. Unfortunately, before she could finish her question, Goku was already gone, disappearing right in front of their eyes.
"...Join us…" She finished lamely. She gave a huff and crossed her arms. She looked over at Piccolo. "I don't think I'll ever get used to that. Is he usually this straightforward?" She asked, exasperated.
Piccolo simply nodded.
She gave a huff. "Well I guess we better get going. Come on boys, we're burning daylight." She said, slowly ascending into the air.
Piccolo easily followed and, much to his surprise, so did Gon.
The three levitated high into the air before letting ki envelope their entire bodies. The three of them then flew at a moderate pace in order to conserve energy.
The trio landed in the middle of the desert, rocky structures surrounding them. Standing a comfortable distance from each other. Piccolo turned toward Gon, able to converse properly with the young boy.
"So, you know how to fly, hmm?" Piccolo asked, nonchalant but with an edge of curiosity. Gon gave Piccolo his full attention before answering.
"Yeah! Gohan taught me. It is the COOLEST THING EVER!" Gon said, expressing his pure elation at being able to soar through the air.
"That it is, kiddo!" Videl piped up, affectionately rubbing her hand on his spiky hair. She looked over at Piccolo with a grin. "He got it down fast too. He was able to levitate on the third try, and could fly like a pro on the second day."
Piccolo smirked lightly. "Fast for you maybe." He remarked, remembering his own first flight.
Videl barked out a laugh and punched him lightly in the arm. "Shut up! I'm not a super genius like everyone else in your little group of 'Z fighters'~!" She teased. Piccolo's face cringed and looked away embarrassed.
'The Z fighters' was the group name a six year old Gohan had given them, because, according to Gohan…
"Well because we protect the planet! We are defenders of justice! And all great heroes need a cool name!" He had declared childishly.
He begrudgingly remembered everyone at the time laughing, charmed by the little boy's silly idea. He himself along with Vegeta had cringed.
Although later on he did admit that it had a nice ring to it.
But only slightly!
"Z fighters?" questioned Gon.
"That's just what Gohan used to call his friends when he was younger." Videl answered.
Gon smiled. "Awww! That's cute!" he said, giggling.
Piccolo cleared his face and put on a stern expression. "Anyway, it's time we started training. We've already wasted too much time." He said getting back on track. The other two looked back at him, both of them focused.
Piccolo looked over at Gon. " What exactly do you need help working on?" He asked the boy, testing as to whether or not he knew his own weaknesses. Gon thought for a moment before answering.
"Gohan says I use my fists too much. He said I need to learn how to fight more strategically."
Piccolo nodded before continuing. "And how much progress have you made?"
Gon smiled. "Gohan says I'm not doing too bad! But I still have a ways to go. I'm starting to see what he meant though. You can't always beat someone with brute force, so you have to rely on other factors. Right?"
"And do you know why you throw yourself into close confrontation?" Piccolo questioned.
If he was going to overcome a flaw, he needed to learn why he had that flaw in the first place.
Gon looked down, rubbing his head. "Because if they can beat me while using their bodies alone, It pisses me off. It makes me feel so… weak. So I always try to at least land a hit on them. Using only strategy kind of feels like cheating sometimes." Gon explained before looking back up at Piccolo.
"Also, Whenever I do win by using close combat alone, I really like the feeling I get afterwards. It just feels so…"
Gon adopted a thinking position, trying to find the right word that represented what he felt.
"Rewarding?" Piccolo suggested.
"Yeah! That's it!" Gon said.
Piccolo nodded his head in understanding. He knew well what Gon spoke of, enjoying the feeling he had felt. The feeling of overpowering your opponent, completely dominating them. That feeling of power gave off a sense of comfort, elation, and superiority. It gave validation that all of the hard work that was done to reach that certain point was well earned and deserved.
He had felt that way during his first fight with Goku during the tournament whenever he had overpowered him. When he was defeated however, he forced himself to reevaluate his fighting style.
Piccolo decided to tell Gon the same thing he had realized when overcoming his own sense of pride.
"I know how you feel." He admitted.
Gon and Videl looked to him.
"Really? That's kind of surprising. From what Gohan told me, you were the strategist of the group, weren't you?" Videl asked, slightly perplexed at this revelation.
Piccolo nodded. "Wasn't always like that." He looked back at Gon. "Try to think of it this way: There are a lot of different types of strengths. There is physical strength, mental strength, and sometimes, using strategy is another way to prove your superiority over opponents. You're proving that you are smarter than they are. also…"
He leaned into Gon, giving him a stern glare. "Sometimes, you are going to need to put your pride away to do what you believe in. Do you want the people you care about to suffer just because you want to prove your strength?" Piccolo asked.
Gon quickly shook his head in an honest manner.
Piccolo nodded approvingly. "Exactly. Always remember that knowledge is power. Never rely on only one trick. The more diverse you are, the better."
Gon nodded. "Osu." He said.
"Good. Now we are going to have an exercise." Piccolo stated.
Videl looked over at him questioningly. "We are?" She asked.
Piccolo nodded and looked back at Gon. "Here's how this is gonna go. We are going to attack you. And the only thing you can do is dodge, block, or hide. If you manage to not get hit for one hour, you win. We will not stop until you finally succeed. We will fight all night if we have to. Got it?"
Gon pouted slightly at the thought of not being able to fight back. However, he found that Piccolo's words resonated with him.
He nodded. The deal seemed fair enough.
"Very well. Videl, come over to my side." He ordered curtly.
"Right." She said with a smirk. She moved 10 meters to Piccolo's side before proceeding to stretch her legs.
Gon settled into his own fighting pose. Making sure to guard himself carefully. Videl put her guard up as well while Piccolo simply stood there with his arms crossed.
"Ready, Gon?" Videl asked.
Gon nodded, determination surging through his eyes. "Yeah!" He confirmed.
Piccolo nodded.
"BEGIN!"
Videl quickly flew away from sight, while Piccolo emitted Red laser beams from his irises.
Gon barely managed to dodge the lasers and jumped back several feet into the air. While midair, He felt a sensation of anticipation crawl up his spine as Videl quickly flew in, attempting to strike at his back.
Gon quickly turned and blocked the flying side kick with his left arm and, making sure to control his strength, pushed her away with just enough force to make her fly off a long distance.
'That should keep her away for a while.' he thought.
As soon as he landed, he was quickly intercepted by Piccolo, who unleashed a barrage of punches at Gon.
Making sure to spike up his aura just enough to match the intensity of Piccolo's attacks, He blocked each hit, albeit barely. Each punch just inches away from his face. He felt the wind from each one.
Gon glared as he realized something.
'He isn't going all out. Which makes sense considering this is just a test. This could also be a way to goad me into letting loose. ' Gon concluded as he narrowly managed to duck under one of Piccolo's punches. He backflipped in order to gain distance.
'But I'm not gonna lose that easily!' He mentally declared.
Just as soon as he got away, the green skinned mentor immediately began shooting at Gon with several small pellets of energy.
Gon immediately began to dodge all of them before noticing that avoiding all of these energy balls was easy.
...Too easy.
For whatever reason, Piccolo stopped shooting the blasts, but still had his arms wide open. Gon immediately sensed a ton of energy around him and looked up.
Energy balls were floating all around him in midair.
'He can control his energy even after the attack left his body?!' Gon realized, his eyes widening. He had never seen this level of energy precision before.
The energy balls all stood there.
Menacingly.
With a quick wave of his hands, the balls came charging at Gon. Gon quickly closed his eyes and activated his ren to protect against the ensuing explosions while putting up his guard, covering his head as much as possible.
Each blast ball resulted in a small explosion upon making contact with Gon. they covered the area with smoke, making a temporary blind spot for Gon.
The explosions stopped and the smoke cleared.
A small crater was formed around Gon. The boy in question still had his arms up, his outfit dirtied with the dirt from the explosions, yet not burnt due to the energy barrier surrounding his body.
Gon looked up from his guard and gave Piccolo a wild grin.
The smile quickly faded as he felt the ground below him vibrate.
Videl burst from the ground and focused all of her strength into her fist, giving Gon a sharp uppercut to his stomach, sending him skidding back away from the crater.
'What?!'
Videl back flipped and regained her footing, landing gracefully on the ground.
She looked up at Gon and let out a smug smirk.
"Looks like you lose, kiddo." She teased, rubbing her sore fist from the punch.
Gon rubbed his chin with a frown.
Her punch didn't hurt, but he felt irritated at the fact that he had lost so quickly.
'She dug into the ground to catch me by surprise. But how did she know where I was If she was underground? It's impossible for Piccolo to have told her. I would have heard them. Wait... She probably just sensed where I was. ' He thought, baffled by the quick strategy.
He was also embarrassed that he had missed such an obvious detail such as her being able to sense energy.
Little did Gon know however, that there was more than one way of communicating when Piccolo was involved.
'Good work, Videl.' Piccolo told her, using telepathy. Videl gave him a thumbs up and a wink at their successful plan.
Piccolo walked over to Gon, crossing his arms in clear disappointment.
"Why did you lose?" He asked, testing to see if Gon knew the reason for his quick defeat.
The answer was obvious, even to Gon.
"I let myself wide open to attacks. I also forgot about Videl. I'm a lot stronger than her so I thought the push sent her flying much farther than I thought. I was also too focused on you." He said looking down.
"I underestimated her though. I didn't expect that kind of attack. Or for her to get back here so quickly." He acknowledged. Disappointed in himself.
Piccolo nodded.
"Those are definitely good reasons, but you forgot to mention how you never really tried to do anything strategically. You were going to rely on your ability to block, dodge, and on that I was holding back." Piccolo added.
Gon rubbed the back of his head bashfully, Videl came to his side.
"Don't feel too bad. To be fair, you didn't know how strong I actually was. Being as strong as you are I can see why you thought it would take a while for me to catch up to you guys." She said.
She patted his back in a nonchalant manner. "Besides, you're still young. You have a lot of time to get stronger."
Gon quickly raised his smile at the comfort. He began to think about all of the ways he could drag this battle on.
"Yeah! This time will be different." He promised.
Videl returned to Piccolo's side and readied her stance.
"Don't get cocky you arrogant brat! Even if you end up winning we're gonna make sure you don't win easily." Piccolo said, glaring daggers into Gon.
Gon went back a distance before turning and guardian himself. Bracing himself for the second round.
It was a quiet day over at Capsule Corp.
Vegeta sensed an energy signature immediately appearing just a few meters behind him. Not surprisingly, it was none other than Goku, (Or Kakarot, as Vegeta liked to call him).
"Hi Vegeta!" He greeted nonchalantly.
Vegeta looked to the side, his stoic expression not budging an inch.
"Our training session is tomorrow. What are you doing here, Kakarot?" He asked Impatiently. He had just been ready to enter Bulma's gravity room.
"I just wanted to drop by. I've got great news for you and Bulma. Oh! And Trunks too. Are they inside?" He asked.
Vegeta shook his head. "Trunks is studying and Bulma is working on some… Well whatever it is that woman does in that lab of hers." Vegeta explained. "I can pass on the message though, so just tell me what it is you need." He responded.
Goku shrugged, satisfied.
"Okay. Anyway I told you about my students, right?" He asked, wanting to be on the same page.
Vegeta scoffed. Goku gave a questioning look.
"YOUR students? Hardly. Your lazy ass is only training one of them and passed the other two to your wife and son." Vegeta jabbed.
Goku pouted, looking offended. "It's not like that! All of them had different weaknesses and I had to give them different teachers to work on those weaknesses!" Goku said, defending his actions.
The saiyan prince simply rolled his eyes. "Whatever. Anyway what about them?" Vegeta inquired, wanting to get to the point.
Goku put his hands to his side and smiled.
"After I fight them all at the end of the month, I want to set up a mini tournament just between us, them and our friends! Sounds pretty exciting huh?" Goku asked, exhilarated by his latest idea.
Vegeta raised his brow.
"It'll be fun! It's been a while since all of us were together, everyone who wants to fight can participate, while the others can just sit back and enjoy the show." He explained.
Vegeta stood still for a moment, contemplating before shrugging and closing his eyes.
"Well… it's not a BAD idea. I must admit it has been rather boring around here. It would be nice to see how much everyone has improved." Vegeta said, before giving a devilish smirk.
"Or if they haven't, it would be even more fun to crush them." He said ominously.
Goku however knew Vegeta meant no ill intent, and laughed heartily.
"How many people have you told about this? Did your woman even agree to this idea of yours?" Vegeta questioned.
"She doesn't know. I only told you right now. In fact, I thought of the idea just yesterday." Goku gave a nervous smile and shrugged.
Vegeta breathed out an irritated sigh. 'Leave it to Kakarot to act on impulse without thinking things through.' He thought. Exasperated at his rivals' behavior
"And how exactly do you plan to convince your woman into agreeing with this?" Vegeta asked.
Goku rubbed the back of his head. "Um…Crap." He said, realizing he probably should have thought this through.
"Look, I'll think of something! Just be sure to tell Bulma and Trunks alright? I gotta go make preparations." He said ready to use instant transmission.
Vegeta wasn't through yet however. "Hold on a damn minute! When will this tournament take place? Assuming your wife approves."
Goku stopped himself from saying goodbye and answered his question. " If Chi-Chi approves, about a week after my fight with the kids. That should give everyone enough time to prepare." Goku explained.
Vegeta nodded. "That sounds reasonable. Just know that if you and I are paired together, I won't hesitate to kick your ass! Understand?" Vegeta challenged.
Goku smirked. "I look forward to it!" He responded, before disappearing.
To where Vegeta could only guess.
Stretching his arms, He headed towards the gravity chamber, ready to resume his training regiment. He would tell Bulma and Trunks later. Perhaps tomorrow, as it was Saturday, It being one of Trunks and Bulma's few days off from work and studying.
It was the dead of night, a full moon already out.
Videl had gone home sometime ago. Unable to keep up with the stamina freaks that were Gon and Piccolo. This had left both of them to train until Gon finally succeeded the test.
The area was completely devastated. Craters and holes in the ground, as well as many of the rocky structures were destroyed, or had holes inside of them.
Behind one of the fallen boulders, Gon stood hiding. His skin was covered in sweat and dirt as well as several bruises from the various attacks he had sustained. He had removed the top of his karate suit leaving only the white tank top he had underneath.
He had activated Zetsu once he was sure Piccolo couldn't see him.
In his hand, he carried a small pebble. He reared back his arm an shot it into the air.
Piccolo, who was just a distance away, heard as the pebble landed on one of the rocks, and quickly turned to see if it was Gon.
As soon as he had though, little to his knowledge, Gon quickly dashed behind another rock, which was farther away from Piccolo. He quickly peaked out of the boulder's side to see that piccolo was just standing there with his arms crossed, probably having already realized that the pebble was nothing more than a decoy.
Gon grabbed for his chest, gritting his teeth.
'I can't hold my breath for much longer...'
Very carefully, he drew in a small amount of air, before exhaling slightly.
unfortunately, That was all Piccolo needed to hear.
Gon's eyes widened as he felt an energy source closing in on his location at rapid speeds.
He quickly leaped into the air a second before Piccolo had smashed the rock into oblivion just by punching it.
'Darn it! His ears are too capable.' Gon thought, his strategy ruined.
Realizing he had dodged, Piccolo looked to the sky and saw Gon before pushing himself off the ground and giving chase, leaving a crater from where he used to propel himself.
Gon charged up whatever energy he had left and flew high into the air, with Piccolo not far behind. The two flew in zigzags, back and forth, side to side.
Piccolo shot out an energy ball.
the attack honed in on Gon, easily catching up to the tired boy.
The attack moved so fast that Gon turned around mid flight, raising his arms to block the energy ball.
However, Gon's luck ran out as his energy finally burned itself out and he began to plummet to the ground.
'Darn it!' He thought, not wanting to lose again.
The energy attack was just about to hit him.
Before it somehow disassembled itself and disappeared.
'What?' Gon questioned just as he hit the floor.
Gon fell to the dirt ground, dust and dirt flying everywhere from the impact. Piccolo hovered down slowly looking down at the boy.
He allowed the boy a minute to catch his breath.
Gon gave his mentor a tired questioning look.
'Why isn't he attacking?'
After waiting, Piccolo gave him a nod of approval.
"Not bad. I have to admit I wasn't expecting you to get this exercise down so quickly. At most, I was expecting you to get it down in a week but you managed it in one day." He said.
Gon's eyes widened in surprise. He realized that ever since they started this round, an entire hour had passed.
Which meant...
"Still, you won fair and square. Good job brat. Looks like you passed." Piccolo said, giving small praise to Gon for his victory.
Gon looked up from where he was lying down and gave a tired grin.
'I did it!' He mentally cried out, too tired to yell in joy.
Piccolo couldn't help but give a small smile.
'I can see why Goku had such interest in this boy. His talent for combat is monstrous. Especially for a human. He's also ridiculously dedicated and determined.' Piccolo thought.
"Alright, that's enough resting. Time to get you back to Videl and Gohan's house. They probably made something for you to eat." He said, encouraging Gon to get up.
Gon nodded tiredly and slowly got up from the ground. He went over to where head taken off the top of his uniform before sliding it back on, Piccolo following behind him. When he tried to activate his aura however, very little came out. He rubbed his head and looked to Piccolo with a nervous grin.
Piccolo looked amused, much to Gon's releif.
"You're all out of energy." Piccolo sighed. "Looks like I have no choice. Come here"
Gon slowly walked toward Piccolo.
He gave a surprised yelp when the taller being grabbed the back of Gon's shirt.
Piccolo then activated his own aura and blasted off at blinding speeds. Gon yelling in surprise at the incredible velocity they were going at.
As they flew Piccolo's mind wandered, allowing his curiosity for this boy to take hold of his mind.
How could a child, a human no less, be this strong?
Have this much potential?
There was no doubt about it.
This boy was anything but ordinary.
Alright! This chapter is finally done.
And right on schedule too!
Looks like the green man himself decided to join in the training. Needless to say, He will not be as lenient with Gon as Gohan and Videl usually are.
