Katherine drew her shawl around her, hugging herself tightly against the chilled breeze. Ireland had never been known for tropical summer temperatures, Kate remembering summers of rainy mornings, cool afternoons, and evenings that would fade into inky darkness. As a child, she would wander through the damp fields between her father's home and her uncle's home, barefooted and overall-ed, while her father and his brother would sit on the porch, watching her chase the sheep and grasp for butterflies while chatting over drinks, unwinding after a long day. How strange it was now to stand on that very porch, watching the long grasses bow to the winds, staring across the field at an empty house that she once called home.

She had been stunned by Severus' initial request to visit Ireland. Every emotion flooded through her as she had sat upright in bed, staring down at him; shock, anger, sadness, joy, fear, all bringing her back to shock. He had explained finding the letter, taking her hands, a tender gesture that had left her more confused by the outlandish request. He had explained to her that it might be good for her, a strange thing to come out of the ever-icy Severus Snape's mouth. She had laid back down, turning her back to him. She did not want to go, she did not need to "heal". She was just fine, thank you very much. Tension had hung heavy in the air, Katherine feeling Severus' eyes on her back for several moments as she held back tears. She was unsure if the tears were simply out of sadness or out of anger, or from a place that she could not quite yet identify. Moments of discomfort passed before Severus crossed the bed, wrapping an arm around her, his voice heavy as he whispered softly, "Your drinking proves that you are not 'fine', Katherine. If you would rather not discuss this now, fine. So be it. But we will discuss this again in the morning. This is something you need to face. And I would quite like it if you allowed for us to face this together." She had allowed the tears she held back to fall, turning to face Severus and pressing her face to his chest as she sobbed, his arms gathering her without the hesitation she had become accustom to.

The next morning, she wrote to the primary school director to reschedule the interview McGonagall had set up for her. She had stood at the kitchen counter, staring at the photograph that still sat on the table, paralyzed in thought. Severus had come in to spread marmalade over a muffin and peck her cheek before returning to his reading. She glanced through the doorway at where he sat in his chair, a book propped in his lap as he intently read. She watched as he flipped through the pages, yawning heavily, before she turned to the kitchen. She glanced at the bottle of wine that sat on the counter, picking it up gently. She read over the merlot's label, the bottle heavy in her hand and she glanced back at Severus. She fumbled through the drawers, producing a well-used corkscrew and uncorking the bottle, overturning it. Severus looked up at the familiar pop, mentally noting the early hour of the morning. He set down his reading and went to stand when he heard the soft glugging of wine exiting the bottle. When he entered the kitchen, he found Katherine at the table writing, and the bottle overturned in the sink. She looked up at him as she folded the paper, "Take a few moments to pack," she said softly, "We're leaving Thursday morning."

Her eyes stayed locked on the dark and silent home. Her father had always left her bedroom light on when she would play outside, to guide her back home in case the night fell, and she was still out with her friends. Now, the beacon of her light house was no longer there to guide her safely back to shore, standing dark and dismal against the gray skies. A year had passed since the last night that light shone out across the field. She counted the sheep that dotted the grass, bleating out to each other as they grazed. She turned, rubbing her palms against the arms of her jumper as she entered her uncle's home again. Severus stood in the parlor, patting soot off of his jacket. The house had been empty when they arrived, her Uncle Connor being sure of so purposefully when they arrived by Floo as to not have any muggle companions present when they stepped out of the hearth. Her family was already in town, no doubt already at the pub preparing for the night's festivities. Connor had left her father's truck, a blue Ford pickup that he had used to tend to the farm, for her parked out front.

"I don't understand why we couldn't have Apparated," Severus called from the parlor, checking his face in the wall mirror for more soot, "Or used a Portkey. Both are much more sophisticated methods of travel than this."

Katherine removed her shawl, folding it carefully, "For the last time, Severus; it is a muggle neighborhood. Portkey or Apparating are both too risky. Nor would I consider a Portkey 'sophisticated'." She explained again, placing the shawl atop her travel bag.

"Well if we make this trip again, I would much rather prefer we travel at night so we can manage the risk," he retorted, "Hell, at this point I would even be content with muggle transportation."

"The great Severus Snape, perished by a bit of dirt," she teased, leaning against the wall and pantomiming an exaggerated faint, a lack of amusement from Severus. She slid down the doorframe, sighing heavily, "No! Not the soot! My greatest weakness!"

Severus rolled his eyes at her antics, stepping past her with a change of clothing he had removed from his own bag, "If you're quite finished, Miss Blakewood, I will be waiting outside."

Kate laughed, straightening herself and straightening her sweater. Severus disappeared into a powder room, the door shutting quietly behind him. Kate crossed her arms over her chest, glancing around the small parlor. Severus' bag had been left often, his clothing left rummaged through and spilling out. She crouched down, gently stuffing his clothing back into his bag and zipping it up. She picked it up, tucking both his and hers under the piano bench and out of the way. When she stood up, she froze, her eyes locked on the framed photograph resting on top of the piano. Murphy's eyes stared back at her, a wide smile across his face. He was young in the photograph, no older than 17, his face tanned from a summer in the fields and covered by the worn ball cap he wore. A young boy, carefree and wild like the daughter to come many years after. She smiled sadly, picking up the frame. She didn't notice Severus come in, changed into clean trousers and a sweater. He knocked on the doorframe, pulling Kate from her thoughts. She looked up at him, the same watery smile on her face. "Shall we be leaving?" he asked. He had changed out of his usual dark uniform of black trousers and a button down, now dressed in the gray trousers and deep maroon sweater she had bought him. He hated it when she tucked it into his drawer, leaving it untouched and undisturbed. He looked handsome, just like she knew he would. He wrinkled his brow, "What is it that you are staring at, Katherine?"

She smiled, stepping forward and running her hands over his chest and plucking a small piece of lint from the cable knit of his sweater, "I really fancy you in this color, Sev," she said, tilting her head up, Severus rolling his eyes before pressing a chaste kiss to her lips.

"Well I hope that I look decent enough," he said, Katherine licking the pad of her thumb and rubbing at an inky smudge of soot on her partner's cheek, Severus gently swatting her hand away and shooting an annoyed look back at her, "I would quite like to make a good impression."

Kate smiled at the sincerity on his tone. Hearing that Severus hoped to make a good first impression on her family was not a sentiment he had expressed before, the cold potions mater usually not passing much mind to the opinions of others. She quite liked the softer, more attentive side to him that she had come to see since he had recommended the visit. She watched as he rubbed at the soot, muttering under his breath about his distaste for Floo as it created a larger smudge. She reached up once more, Severus pausing and lowering his hand with a huff, allowing her to rub at the dirt. Her touch lingered far after the soot was gone, cupping his cheek gently and pressing a soft kiss to his lips, "They'll love you."

Severus wasn't entirely sure what he had expected of Katherine's family. Yet somehow, they had exceeded all of those expectations the moment they stepped into the rundown pub. From the moment they had stepped out of the old pickup and into the pub, Severus had been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of noise created by the lot. Katherine had bounded into the pub, her face lighting up at the sight of the familiar crowded building. She took in the laughter, the conversation, the heavy smell of cigarettes and spilled alcohol. Nostalgia flooded through her as she was overwhelmed by a sense of homesickness that she had not yet acknowledged. Her father would have loved to be there. He had always loved when the family came together. However, she noticed Severus's tension as they approach the crowded building. They stopped as they reached the doorframe, the creaking of the door announcing their arrival to the gathering of family and friends. Severus scanned the busy pub, every inch of floor space filled. He had expected a small gathering of close family and friends; not the entire village. "Who are all of these people?"

"Family," Kate said, "Friends. It's a very small village, my father knew many of those who live here. It makes sense that they would want to come pay their respects. I'm sure plenty are patrons as well. To close down the only pub in town during prime hours would be bad for business."

"Kathy!" a woman cried, pushing through the crowd, her mane of gray similar to that of her niece. She gathered the young woman in her arms, enveloping Kate into her embrace, "What a treat it is to see that face! Oh, how glad I am to see you!" Kate giggled, leaning into the woman's hug as she rocked her side to side.

Severus hung in the doorway, avoiding the stare of the dozens of eyes that had turned to face him and his young love upon their entry. Severus found it foreign to hear Kate referred to by another name. In his own home as a child, affectionate names were not given to him by his parents. Severus. He had always been Severus. He scanned the room, absorbing the faces that looked back at him. Men and women stood talking and drinking, music blaring loudly mixed with the clinking of glasses against the bar and lively conversation. It was easy to see which individuals Kate was related to, noting the similar eye color and wild curls. He felt out of place among the mix of muggles; the tall, brawny ranchers holding mugs of beer that he was sure Kate's family had assumed she would settle with. Not the pale, dark haired potions master that avoided their eye contact.

"Oh, Aunt Annabelle!" Kate laughed, "And miss an opportunity to see you? Never!"

Annabelle's eyes turned from her niece to the man lingering behind her, offering him a smile, "And this must be your beau?" she wrapped her arm around Kate, giving her shoulders a suggestive squeeze, and pinching her cheeks with her free hand.

Kate swatted her hand away playfully, turning her gaze to Severus. He kept his feet planted firmly before the doorway, physically refusing to cross the threshold into the environment that was so foreign to him. How ridiculous this all was. Why did he volunteer for this? He would much prefer the comfort of their home over this. He would much rather the peace of their living room while he gathered research for the coming year and Katherine listened to her awful records. Thiswas far too much. Yet, when Katherine reached her hand out to him, he saw a new softness about her. He wondered what it was like to truly go home. Yet, when he looked at her, her brown eyes soft as she smiled at him encouragingly, he felt that same softness grow in his chest. He took her hand, stepping into the pub.

Kate wrapped an arm around his waist, placing her hand on his chest like a love struck schoolgirl. Severus kept himself from rolling his eyes. His Katherine, as inappropriate as ever. He met the gaze of Annabelle, her bright blue eyes scanning the man. Of course, Severus was not what she had expected. A little thin, but nothing that they couldn't fix. Severus avoided stood awkwardly, waiting for one of the women to speak so that he could offer a curt nod and slink off to a corner somewhere. Katherine patted his chest rather roughly, her lips stretched over her teeth in a forced smile as she looked up at him pointedly, jerking her head towards her aunt, "I'm sorry, Auntie. Severus is quite shy. Severus, this is my Aunt Annabelle- my father's sister."

Severus took the que, clearing his throat and extending his hand to the plump woman, "Severus Snape," he said, Annabelle shaking his hand.

Annabelle's eyes widened as she pinched her niece's elbow, "Kathy told us so much about you in her letter, she's quite taken with you." She took Kate's hand, giving it a pat, "Now come along, both of you! I have been running the bar and you know labor around here does not come for free."

Kate laughed, "Aye, I see! I should have expected that you would make me work!"

"Well, what else are ya good for?" Annabelle joked, giving her niece a playful wink.

Kate took Severus's hand, noticing how tense he was. She gave it a gentle squeeze, "We don't have to stay long."

Severus tugged on the hem of his jumper, avoiding the stare of the large man he had knocked shoulders with, "While my immediate preference is that we leave immediately, I understand how important this is to you. Please don't use my significant discomfort as a reason to leave."

Katherine smiled, rubbing his arm gently, processing the discomfort masked by the passive aggressive nature of the sincere words. She looked away when she heard her aunt shout over the music, "Everyone! Katherine and her beau are here!"

"Oh, bloody hell," Severus muttered.

Cousins and childhood friends alike pushed through the crowd, excitedly leaping onto Kate with hugs and squeals of laughter. Three women rushed Katherine, one leaping into her arms with an excited squeal. Severus stepped away from his partner, the women's' squeals and shrieks deafening. The dark-haired woman bounced on her toes, grabbing Katherine's face in her hands, "Look at you! It has been so long! Oh, how I missed your lovely face!"

Kate returned the woman's excitement, laughing again before wrapping her arms around the dark-haired woman again. She turned to Severus, cheek to cheek with the woman, "Sev, this is my cousin Morgan!" she gestured to the two women flanking her, one a fiery red-head and the other dark-haired as well, "And these two are Saoirse and Eleanor, Annabelle's daughters! We all grew up together!"

Morgan's eyes ran over Severus, taking in her cousin's choice of partner, "You're Kathy's boyfriend, aren't ya?" she turned back to her cousin, lowering her voice, "Quite different from the last lad, ain't he?"

Severus cringed. Boyfriend. What an insufferable word. He had always found the term to be incredibly juvenile. It was a term that lacked propriety. He heard students throw the term around in classes and in the courtyard, acquaintances during his own Hogwarts years throwing them about. How strange it was to have that word attached to his own identity. He and Kate had never discussed such frivolous things, settling instead into the comfort of togetherness without attaching such ridiculous words to it. Yet, Morgan stared at him, her eyes still wandering over him, her nose slightly wrinkled and brows furrowed, and Severus knew the look all too well. He nodded, "Yes."

Kate rolled her eyes at Severus's curt reply, recognizing her partner's annoyance at her cousin's choice of words. She gave the three women another tight hug, "We'll catch up later, I know Connor is waiting for us and I hate to keep him waiting."

She led him through the crowd, patrons shouting their hellos and pleasantries to Kate over the loud music, some wrapping an arm around her shoulders and lowly expressing their condolences. Severus followed closely behind her, brushing elbows with Kate's past with every step. At the back of the bar, a man sat behind a round table, tucked into the booth as if he were a part of the décor. A whisky glass sat on the oak table in front of him, bright eyes peering out at the crowd of people from under the brim off his newsboy hat, his weathered face stoic and morose. He was older than Severus had anticipated, with Severus assuming the man to be at least 30 years his senior. As the couple approached, the man looked up at his niece, his leather-like face stretching into a grin, "Kathy," he said happily, reaching his hands out to take hers. Kate placed her hands in her uncles, leaning forward to kiss his cheek and say hello. "How wonderful it is to see you."

"The very same to you, Uncle Connor," Kate said, "The house looks wonderful, thank you again for allowing us to stay on such short notice." Connor eyes went from his niece to the strange man who stood beside her, his stare boring into Severus. Severus shuffled his weight from foot to foot uncomfortably, keeping his own stare on Kate.

Connor waved his hand dismissively, "It's no matter. We are all so glad you are here. Although I wish your visit was under better circumstances, I am thankful to honor your father with his family."

Kate nodded, squeezing her uncle's hand. He looked up at her with bright blue eyes, Kate's heart sinking deep into her stomach. Her uncle and her father had the same eyes- the same twinkling blue that she had always envied as a child. She had complained to her father constantly growing up, angry that she had instead received her brown eyes from her mother rather than her father's wicked blue. Since the previous summer she had pushed the electric color from her thoughts, yet as she stood in front of her father's eldest sibling, that color danced through her thoughts, bringing with it a parade of grief that pounded in her chest. Not a single thing in her current surroundings failed to remind her of her father. She patted her uncle's hand, masking her sadness with a smile, longing for the comfort of the soft, clean cotton sheets she had put on their bed at Spinner's End the night before and the sound of Severus's low mumbles as he read under his breath in bed next to her.

She noticed his hard stare on Severus, the younger man uncomfortable and exuding anxieties. She knew that this kind of environment was far from Severus's comfort level, and that the stares they were receiving caused the potions master a great deal of annoyance that hadn't gone unnoticed by his lover. "This must be the lad from your letter, eh?"

Kate turned, taking Severus's hand. He stepped forward, Kate looking up at him as she introduced him to the patriarch. Severus replied with a curt nod, which the old man returned. Kate stood between the two men, tension thick in the air as she waited for one to speak. She had assumed something like this would take place; her uncle sizing up the new man n her life and Sev unsure of how to respond. Patrons began to call for a bartender behind them, Kate glancing back at the empty bar. Several moments passed before Connor lifted his glass, draining the contents and holding it out to his youngest niece, "Kathy, be a dear," he said, his eyes still locked on her companion, "You know how your aunt is. Too busy blabbering about to tend her own bar."

Kate nodded, taking the glass, "Aye, sounds about right," she turned, giving Severus an encouraging look, "Sev?"

"Get us both a fire whisky," Connor answered, "Bottle is below the counter."

Kate nodded, Severus's shooting her an annoyed glare as she passed by him. She popped up on her toes, pressing a kiss to his cheek and whispering, "Just try to be polite."

Severus gave out an exasperated sigh, his eyes following Kate as she walked past him towards the bar. She pushed through the crowd, patrons jeering and cheering as she backed herself against the bar, lifting herself up onto it. "Aye, glad to see someone is workin' in this joint!" a man called out, his group of mates laughing, hands gripping at half full mugs. Kate rolled her eyes, twisting herself around and swinging her legs over the bar, dropping down and lifting the bottle of fire whiskey and two clean glasses out from under the bar.

"Oh, piss right off," Kate called back, pouring the amber liquid into the glass and passing them off to a cousin, instructing them to carry it over to the patriarch and the seemingly outsider, "The last thing we need is the likes of you drinkin' here. You'll dry us up, the lot of you!" The men laughed, Kate taking to orders quickly. Severus watched her for a moment, the red-headed cousin placing glasses of whisky onto the table between the two men. Kate's head dipped back, a hearty laugh roaring from her chest in response to something Morgan said to her, filling a mug from the pull-tab. Severus had noticed a change in her since their arrival- a happiness come over her that he had not seen the likes of since now. He had wondered if it had been seeing family, or returning to the place that she had once called home, but he couldn't ignore the pang of jealous he felt when he heard someone call her Kathy. She seemed fulfilled in the company of her childhood friends, and he wondered why she had chosen to return to Spinner's End upon graduation instead to their present company. As he watched her laugh and chat with the villagers at the bar, her head bobbing slightly to the lively music filling the pub, he feared that the small house that she called their own so lovingly would fail to fulfill her in the same way. If he would fail to fulfill her in the way this place had seemed to in the mere hours since they had arrived to it.

"Well don't just stand there," Connor said gruffly, roughly gesturing to the chair opposite to him, "Sit down lad." He picked up his own glass, pushing the other to Severus, who gladly accepted the alcohol. The two men sat in silence, nursing their drinks. Connor tapped his foot to the beat of the song playing, staring at Severus over his glass. Connor took a long drink, "I hear you and Kathy have shacked up. Is that right, my boy?"

Severus was taken aback by the man's comment, quickly formulating a response, "That is correct, sir. Katherine moved into my home late in the spring."

"And what is it you do for work?"

"I am a professor at Hogwarts. This last term was my second at the school."

Connor nodded, taking another pull of whiskey. The two fell silent again, Severus desperately hoping that Katherine would return or that the whiskey would relieve him from this ghastly conversation. Connor looked beyond the dark-haired man at his niece, Kate now dancing with her cousins, clapping along to the rhythm of the music as couples paired off to dance. Connor saw so much of his youngest sibling in the girl, the same stubbornness and strong will. He had loved his daughter immensely. Severus turned to face her as well. Leave it to Katherine to find the joy in every situation. Murphy emptied the contents of his glass, setting it onto the table with a heavy sigh before addressing Severus, "My niece," he sighed once more, watching Kate twirl and laugh with her cousins, pushing Eleanor towards a young farmer down the road who quickly asked her for a dance, "She is a good lass."

Severus nodded in agreement, Kate flashing him a smile from across the room. He returned her smile, finishing his own drink. The older man continued to speak, his eyes focusing on Severus rather than on Katherine, "My brother loved his daughter very much. Her mother quite the piece of work, but Murphy doted on that little girl. He hoped that his daughter would grow to meet a good man. A man who would take as good of care of her as my brother did and treat her right. Now that my brother is gone, God rest his soul, I know he would hope that his daughter would still be cared for." Connor shook his head, Severus wondering if the man had ever anticipated that his sibling would pass before him. Connor fell quiet, his eyes unfocused and full of sorrow. Severus leaned forward in his chair, unsure of what to say to the man. It was clear that he loved his brother's daughter. He hoped that the young man's intentions were to care for a girl who had already faced enough heartache, "She was devastated when he passed. We all were. Yet, Kathy has been back to this place since her father's funeral. I'd be lyin' if I said I wasn't surprised to hear she was planning to come tonight."

Severus folded his hands on the table, focusing on the older man's fingers. His hands were rough and calloused, a simple gold band on his left hand. Severus met Connor's gaze, "I must assure you, sir, my intentions are purely honorable. I truly care for your niece."

Connor nodded, "I hope so, my boy."

Connor smiled as Kate approached the table, laughing as she pushed her way through the crowd. The music shifted from the bright, lively tune, slowing to something softer. Severus recognized the song from one of Kate's muggle records. She would sway gently to it as she prepared dinner, singing quietly. She had a rather lousy singing voice, her sense of pitch faltering as she kept her voice low as to not disturb Severus as he read in his study. However, he would still strain to hear her in the other room as he worked. Patrons paired off, swaying gently. Kate's cheeks were flush, curls bouncing as she leaned down to kiss Severus, "C'mon now, dance with me."

She slipped her hand in his, giving him a slight tug from his chair. Severus resisted her tug, "I'm sure this will come as a shock to you, Katherine, but I do not dance."

"Oh, please Sev. You know how much I love this song," she protested.

"No, Katherine."

Kate rolled her eyes, pressing a kiss to his cheek before returning to the bar, sitting down on a stool next to Morgan, chatting with her and watching the couples dance. Severus watched her from his seat in the back of the bar, her soft swaying on the old stool causing it to rock. She kept her face close to her cousin, speaking quickly, her eyes still on Severus. He returned to his longing for their own home. He wondered if she would have played this record as she cooked, and if he would have accepted her offer then in the privacy of their own home, out of the eye of judging family members and curious strangers. A tall, broad man crossed the pub to her, leaving behind a group of friends who jeered after him. Severus bristled up as the man neared the young woman, gritting his teeth when the man dipped his head to her ear, undoubtedly asking for a dance. Kate looked at him, eyes wide and lips stretched into an uncomfortable grin as she shook her head no, thanking the man. However, he only asked again, Katherine looking at Severus uncomfortably. Connor noticed the dark-haired man go tense, folding his hands in his lap and chuckling. "I met my wife in a pub like this," he stated, "Long before you were even born. She was out with a few friends, myself out with a few of my own after a long day of working in the fields. I was never much of a dancer, but after watching my Roisin," he shook his head, smiling fondly at the memory, "She loved to dance. After that, something came over me and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to ask that woman for a dance. Throughout our marriage, I always found an excuse to take her in my arms and find a moment to dance. She died shortly after our youngest child was born and I would give anything to dance with her just one more time."

Connor sighed, leaning back into his chair, looking at Severus, "When the woman you love asks you to dance, you dance."

Severus sat for a moment, taking in the old wizard's words. He watched as Katherine hesitantly agreed to the man's request, rising from her seat, the man offering her arm. Severus looked upon the woman he had shared his home with, the woman he had held for so many nights. The night had not been what Severus would have deemed ideal, yet he had rather enjoyed the sight of the young woman's smile. He sighed, excusing himself as he stood, Connor offering him a nod as he maneuvered the dwindling crowd. Relief washed over Kate's face as Severus neared, the man looking behind him at the approaching dark-haired man.

"Pardon me, I believe she said no," Severus said curtly.

"Aye, my apologies," the other man said, holding his hands up in mock surrender, "I figured a beautiful woman sitting by herself was too good to be true."

Severus nodded, the man slinking back to his group of friends. He turned to Katherine, who smiled excitedly up at him, Severus ignoring her giddy nature, "Severus Snape," she teased, "Are you really about to dance? In a pub?"

Severus rolled his eyes, holding his hand out to her, "Come now, Katherine. Don't make me regret this decision."

Kate laughed taking his hand and leading him out to where the rest of the couples danced, "Don't worry, professor," she said, slipping one arm around his neck and the other hand into his, Severus resting his hand on her waist, "I'll go easy on you."

Severus rolled his eyes, eliciting another giggle from Kate. The two swayed for several moments, Severus looked around to see who all was staring at them. Kate rested her head on Severus's chest, taking in the comfort of his embrace. Severus looked down at her, her dark eyelashes resting on her chest, her body warm and familiar in his arms. He rested his chin upon her curls, releasing her hand to wrap his other arm around her waist, relishing in the comfort of her touch in the uncomfortable environment. He was not one for such affectionate behaviors, finding annoyance in the similar gestures he had seen shared by students. However, in the arms of his former student, he found a comfort he had lacked for so many years. "Katherine?" she looked up at him, her cheek pressed to his chest, "Why is it that you never requested that I call you Kathy?"

Kate sighed, Severus noticing the way her body tensed against him, "Kathy was the name my father called me by," she explained, Severus nodding, "I much rather prefer being called by something other. Besides, I quite like that you call me Katherine."

Severus nodded once more, leaning down to press his lips to hers. "I love you," she said softly, placing her head on his chest once more. Severus pressed a kiss to the top of her heart, melting into her embrace once more. The couple swayed to the music once more, Severus no longer searching the room for wandering eyes.

"I love you, as well, Katherine."
