So a lot of this is lifted straight from the Terror Bears Adventure in the TMNT and Other Strangeness book, but the funny thing is...What if all this happened in Gotham? Where Supervillain attacks usually means it's Tuesday, this was one of the first things I thought of when doing this redo fic is that the effects of the Terror Bears psychic attacks would look very similar to Scarecrow's MO however the targets of the crimes are so Penny Ante that is would lead most to think Scarecrow is losing his marbles...More so than usual...
Over the next few days, as the Turtles waited to see what would happen with Enna and Scarecrow and also trying to dig up some more dirt on Dim Thoughts, before they would try to make a move (They pretty much knew more Mutant Children were being held there) a rash of strange crimes...Strange even for Gotham happened...The details were as follows...
The linking factors are all weird. Each of the places hit are out in distant suburbs all within a mile or two of rural farms or forest. In every case, the incident happened late at night and there was always a guard, attendant or custodian on duty...The aftermath of these crimes was sometimes tragic. In most cases, the employees of the burglarized business were simply be unable to remember any details of the crime. They were normally shaken, upset, and slightly hysterical. However, in three cases, the victim had gone completely bonkers and had to be institutionalized as a raving lunatic.
Four late-night party stores, an all-night gas station, and two banks had been robbed
In the latest incident, in a suburban bank, a security camera was activated. Unfortunately, (and this was shown on TV, pictures in newspapers) the only thing seen were three large hats on the other side of a four-foot high counter.
That was when the Turtles and Casey knew they had to make their move.
And of course Batman, who had been wearily trying to locate the Rogues and bring them back to Arkham after that latest massive break out, also knew about it, and seeing the effects of the employees he could only think of Scacrecrow, however to implication of the rather short criminals did strike Batman and Robin as rather odd, they didn't think Professor Crane being rather frail himself would be inclined to hire henchmen with...Dwarfism?
When he found Scarecrow lurking around that same Bank the next night, what else would he do but immediately arrest him, however Scarecrow insisted it wasn't him this time.
"You've got to believe me Batman!" Scarecrow pleased as he tried to tug away from Batman and Robin "This isn't my doing this time! It was the Terror Bears! Little mutant bears!"
"Right..." Robin said "...Professor, I think you've been huffing your own fear gas too much."
"Oh for the love of..." Jonathan groaned at being sassed by the Boy Wonder "Batman you don't understand..."
"What else is there to understand?" Batman askedthe agitation in voice told Jonathan the situation was serious.
"Please!" Scarecrow got on his knees and wept "If nothing else Batman, if you must take me back to Arkham...Then at the very least provide some protection for Enna!"
"Enna?" Now this had Batman's interest "Who is Enna?"
"She's a mutant otter." Jonathan said "As intelligent as a human and can speak, she's the one who alerted me about the Terror Bears, who apparently came from the same Lab she escaped from, Please Batman! She's a freak with no place in this world! If nothing else then please protect her!"
Batman and Robin looked at each other for a moment, this seemed so unlike the usual Jonathan Crane but then again they both remembered the incident when Scarecrow tried to be a teacher again...
"What do you make of this?" Batman asked Robin
"To be fair..." Robin said "...Professor Crane isn't the kind who would just make up stories about talking animals, if anything that's what Mad Hatter would do...And attacking party stores and gas stations doesn't fit his usual MO either."
"He is telling the truth." Came a new voice and five figures dropped down from the trees four of which were clearly not human.
"Who are you?" Batman asked
"We're Mutants ourselves." Leo said as he approached "And we've seen the Mutant Otter Scarecrow is talking about, we tried to persuide her to come with us, but she wanted to stay with the Professor and we respected her decision...Where is Enna anyway?"
"She was following the Bears' scent..." Jonathan said "...When I began to suspect we were being followed I told her to go to the truck and if I didn't come back..."
And with that they all headed to the truck the was parked in the nearby woods.
Enna was gone, but they found some torn cloth from her costume as well as a little fur and blood on the passenger seat...
DUN DUN DUN! Yes Enna has been kidnapped! Now it becomes a race to find her!
