Hi! So I figured since today Taylor Swift released her album that I would release the top-secret project I've been working on. I read Twilight earlier this year and I wanted to explore writing in the universe. This first one-shot focuses on depression and suicide, so be cautious reading it if those are triggering topics. Thank you so much for reading!
Bella's POV
I peer over the cliff, seeing the violent waves. I step back, considering. Jacob thinks I'm jumping off the cliff for fun, but I'm planning on killing myself. I just can't stand the fact that he's gone. I made sure to keep Jacob busy so he wouldn't follow me in. The bracelet I "lost" is still on my wrist but underneath my sleeve.
I take a deep breath, my mind made up. I back up and run for the edge, jumping. I hear the wind whistling past me and the waves hitting the rock. I'm not scared; I'm relieved. I'm finally going to be done with this-being without him. I feel the water hit me, freezing, rendering swimming useless. Even if I don't drown, I'll freeze to death. I break the surface, glancing at my surroundings. Nobody can see me. Perfect. I allow myself to slip back under the icy water, thinking about the past months without him. I just wish I could see him one last time, but I guess a memory will do. I start with the first day I saw him, making my way to the last time I saw him-when he broke up with me when he stole my will to live. It's similar to when James bit me-my life flashing before my eyes.
I feel my limbs getting heavier. There's a splash near me, but I assume it's from the waves. I open my eyes, seeing the light from the surface fading. I smile, finally at peace. Goodbye, Edward. I let the darkness take me.
"...let me, Edward," I hear a voice say. I refuse to move, to open my eyes, to make a sound. "I need to do CPR. I need to get the water out of her lungs."
"Don't you dare break her, Carlisle," I hear another voice growl. Edward. I must be dreaming.
"I don't have a choice, Edward. It's either that or she dies." I feel hands touch my chest. I realize what's going on, shocked that Edward is here. I open my eyes, groaning against the brightness, even though it's cloudy. I turn on my side, coughing up water. "Bella? Bella, can you hear me?" Carlisle asks, moving his hands off my chest to my wrist.
"Bella?" Edward asks. He drops to the ground next to me, smoothing back my hair. I stare into his eyes and lay on my back again, slipping back into darkness.
"...lay her there," I hear a voice instruct. I feel arms around me, a chill entering my body. I shiver against the cold.
"She's freezing," I hear another voice say.
"Here are blankets. Put them between Bella and you."
There's a warmth that appears and I snuggle into it. "Bella? Can you hear me? Is that ok?" I feel vibrations against my body.
"Mmm…so warm," I murmur.
"Carlisle?"
"Open your eyes, Bella." I sigh and do as I'm told. I blink until it becomes clear, focusing on Edward and Carlisle staring at me. "Bella?"
"I'm right here," I mumble. My attention turns to Edward looking at me. "You're back?" I whisper in awe, slowly reaching out to touch him, confirming that he's real.
"Yes," he murmurs. "I'm right here," he echoes.
"Bella, do you remember what happened?" Carlisle asks.
I turn my attention toward him. "Not really-" but then the memory hits me. "Yes."
"Can you elaborate?" Carlisle is examining me, gently moving my joints, and checking my hearing and such.
"Do I have to?"
"Yes, Bella. Please," Edward murmurs in my ear.
I sigh. "When you guys left, I lost interest in everything and the will to live. I was sick of living without you, so I jumped. I hoped it would kill me-and it was close."
"Did you ever go to the doctor?" Carlisle asks, now sitting in the chair across from me. He looks me dead in the eyes.
"No, why? I was perfectly healthy," I respond, shifting my weight.
"You have been physically healthy, but not mentally healthy," Carlisle answers. "You were depressed, Bella."
I shrug. "And?"
"Bella," Edward sighs.
"I've had depression all my life; it just relapsed when you left," I respond, standing up. I sway for a moment before I gain my balance. "Now, I'll let you guys leave again. Goodbye," I say, walking toward the front door.
Suddenly, Edward is in front of me. "Move, Edward," I say through gritted teeth, shoving him, even though I know it won't do anything.
"Well, you're physically stronger than you were when we left. What have you been up to?" Edward asks, pushing me gently back to the couch.
"It's none of your damn business," I respond, leaning against the armrest. Carlisle hasn't moved. "And I bet Alice knows anyways."
"Bella-"
"Don't start with me, Edward. You don't get to break my heart leaving me and expect me to be fucking fine! You can't think I'm just going to come back to you for a little while before you leave again!" I stand up straight, starting to pace. "I cried myself to sleep every night that first week! I didn't eat, I lost interest in everything, and I was always sad because you were gone! Can't you see? You broke me and it pushed me over the edge!"
I sink down to the ground, crying. I feel Edward approach me, his cold hand rubbing my back. I shy away from his touch and he sighs. "Bella, I was supposed to help you by leaving. I can see now that it did the exact opposite."
I look up at him. "The only way I'm coming back into your life is if you promise to stay with me. Otherwise, I'm going back home-with Renée. I can't keep on living here without you. I'm not going through that again," I say, standing up. I walk to the door. "So what's your decision?" I cross my arms in front of my chest, staring. Carlisle stood up and approached Edward. He whispers something to him, too fast for me to catch it. I huff and roll my eyes, grabbing the handle. The next thing I know Edward's hand is on mine.
Edward gently pulls me away from the door. "Bella," he murmurs, "we'll stay. All of us."
I turn to face him. "Are you sure? You aren't just going to disappear again?" I ask, skeptical.
"I promise, Bella," Edward replies, cupping my face.
"Ok," I whisper. He kisses me gently. I lean into his touch, sighing. It's like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I smile, finally feeling whole again. Edward pulls back quickly. "I love you," I whisper.
"I love you, too," Edward replies.
"Thank you," I say, loud enough for Carlisle to hear. I turn to him and smile.
Carlisle nods. "Thank you, Bella."
I smile and turn back to Edward. "It sounds like the rest of my family is here. Shall we go meet them?"
I nod and smile, glad to be back in his life.
Edward's POV
"Bella's going to jump off a cliff," Alice remarks.
I shoot up from my seat. "What?!"
"Edward, we have to move now. It's going to happen soon. She's already at La Push."
"Fuck," I mumble. "We're going to have to run."
"I'll come with you," Alice chirps, already moving toward the door.
"No, you will not. You will stay with Jasper. Edward and I will go," Carlisle cuts in, standing next to me. Alice nods and Carlisle turns to me. "Let's go."
Carlisle and I are scouring the beach, hoping Bella hasn't jumped yet. I look out at the water and see a flash of brown. I dive into the water, swimming to the area. "Damn it, Bella," I mutter. She's sinking below the water, unconscious. I grab her, bringing her to the surface. I can hear her pulse, but it's weak. I swim back to shore with one arm, the other one keeping Bella above water. I reach land and gently lay Bella down. "Carlisle!" I shout. He runs over, dropping his human charade. "She-she was in the water," I choke out.
"Move out of my way Edward," Carlisle instructs. I ignore him, trying to wake her. "I need to help her now; let me, Edward," he tries again. This time I move, standing and pacing. "I need to do CPR. I need to get the water out of her lungs."
"Don't you dare break her, Carlisle," I respond, knowing that it'll most likely break her ribs.
"I don't have a choice, Edward. It's either that or she dies." He puts his hands on her chest, ready to start chest compressions. Suddenly, Bella's eyes flicker open. She groans, blinking against the harsh light. She turns onto her side, coughing up water. "Bella? Bella, can you hear me?" Carlisle asks, moving his hands off her chest to her wrist, checking for a stronger pulse.
"Bella?" I ask, relieved. I drop to the ground next to her and smooth back her wet hair from her face. She looks into my eyes for a moment before laying down and losing consciousness again. "Carlisle?" I growl.
"Her pulse is stronger, Edward. Let's take her home and warm her up," Carlisle says, standing up. I take Bella in my arms and we run home at supernatural speed.
