I told Jacob everything, well almost everything. I didn't think he'd be happy to hear that at some point I'd have to be turned into a 'bloodsucker', to be honest I was trying to forget about it. To think, there was a time that I wanted to be like them more than anything. I wanted us to have forever. Now we had nothing, although they didn't seem to understand that. Jacob was incensed when I told him about my discussion with the Cullens. That they'd taken me to their house, that they'd tried to apologize. He couldn't believe they thought everything could go back to how it was before, to be honest neither could I.
There wasn't much of anything in the house, so I made a mental note to pick up some groceries and we ordered takeout. Jacob ate loads, which was good because he was so distracted by his own appetite, he didn't notice mine, or my lack of one. After we'd finished and Jacob had helped me clear up, we were sat in the lounge, me finishing off my work and Jacob watching football. I sat on the floor in front of him while he laid on the sofa. The only thing I had left to do was read Act 3 Scene 2 of Macbeth, but I could feel my concentration slipping as I got further down the first page. "Bells?" Jacob said placing a hand on my shoulder. "Why don't you go up to bed?"
"No," I said shaking my head. "I want to get it finished." He sighed, and before I could stop him, he'd sat up, put his arm around my waist and pulled me onto the sofa. "Jake what are…"
"Shush." He said letting go of my waist and grabbing the book from me. Before I could say anything else he started reading. "Is Banquo gone from court? Ay, madam, but returns again tonight. Say to the king I would attend his leisure for a few words." As he continued reading, using different voices for each character, I rested my head in his lap, feeling calmer than I had for weeks.
I woke in the early hours of the morning in my bed, Jake laid next to me his arm around my waist. I lifted it off me as I sat up and swung my legs off the side, rubbing my eyes in an attempt to wipe away the images that remained from my dream. "Bella?" Jake whispered, moving to sit next to me. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah." I said trying to catch my breath. "Sorry I didn't mean to wake you, and you didn't need to stay."
"That's okay." He said running his hand up and down my back. "Do you need anything?"
"No." I whispered leaning my head against his chest. "I'm fine." Maybe if I kept saying it, it would become true. "Are you sure?" He asked, kissing the top of my head. I paused for a minute before deciding to just ask. "Actually; will you read to me? Just so I can fall back to sleep."
"Of course." He replied. I flicked my lamp on and grabbed a copy of The Faraway Tree from my shelf, wanting something light-hearted even if a bit random. Jacob took the book from me and laid down, lifting his arm so I could rest my head on his chest before he pulled the covers back around us.
I managed to sleep for a few more hours but woke again at 4. I snuck out of bed and headed downstairs. By the time I'd cleaned the kitchen, made Jacob some breakfast, and Charlie some lunch, it was seven, and I had to get ready for school. When Jacob got downstairs at eight, he was surprised to see me ironing. "Bella did you clean the kitchen, and do laundry?" He asked scanning the room and looking at me in confusion. "What time did you get up?" I shrugged my shoulders in an attempt to be non-committal, "I'm not sure, I couldn't sleep so I thought I'd just get on with some chores. Here." I said placing his breakfast in front of him. "You need to go after you're finished, I don't think Charlie will be happy that you stayed over."
"Sure, no worries. Thank you for breakfast you didn't have to." Jake said, briefly squeezing my hand before picking up his cutlery. "It's okay, you didn't have to stay over, or read me back to sleep but you did." I quickly scrawled a note for Charlie to text me a list for the grocery store before grabbing my bag. "Okay, well I should get going. I'll see you later." I kissed the top of his head and headed out the door. "Yeah, I'll see you later Bells." He called behind me.
I was exhausted, my decision not to stay in bed was a mistake, a big one. School had dragged and after Gym in which I'd had to run track for the entirety of the lesson, I felt like I was ready to collapse. By the time I reached the truck I swear I was half asleep, and I barely even noticed Jake leaning against it. "Bella, you okay?" He asked taking the bag from my shoulder. "I'm fine, just tired. What are you doing here?" He rarely met me at school and the only times he had we'd organised it in advance. "I was around so I thought I'd just meet you here. I'm glad I did though, I don't think you should be driving." As he spoke, he searched through my bag. "Where are your keys?"
"Here." I said fishing them out of my pocket. He snatched them from my hand. "Jake, what?!"
"I'm driving, come on, get in." I attempted to stare him down, but he was having none of it.
"Fine, but we need to go to the grocery store."
Jake was skittish for want of a better word. The whole time we were in the store he was scanning everywhere, everyone. Every single person that walked by, he did a double take. Every sound, he seemed to investigate. Anyone would think we were undercover or something. By the time we got back to the truck my nerves were fried and my head was throbbing. "Okay Jake, enough is enough." I said as I shut the passenger door. "What?" He questioned, feigning ignorance.
"Nope, we're not. Something is going on." I crossed my arms, not taking my eyes off him.
"Bella I…"
"Start talking." He sighed, looking behind him as he reversed the truck.
"Okay, but don't freak out." Oh shit, that wasn't a good sign. I took a deep breath waiting for the rest. "You know about what's happening in Seattle?" He didn't wait for me to respond but I nodded my head anyway. "All those people going missing Bella, someone's creating an army."
"An army?" I questioned, what the hell was he talking about.
"Of new-borns, of vampires."
"What do you mean, how can you possibly know that? And what does that have to do with me?" I said pinching the bridge of my nose. "They're not being discreet, if they don't stop, the Volturi will come to make them." I suddenly understood the concern.
"And if they go to Seattle, what's to stop them coming here? Wait you only found out about the Volturi last night, how do you know that, or why it would even matter that they came?" Now I was wide awake, and the slight throbbing in my temple had turned into full blown pounding. "Well, I, I went to see the Cullens." He stammered, taking his eyes off the road for a second to look at me. "You what?!" I shouted. "Why would you do that? What did they say? Jake what the fuck?!"
"Okay, okay, I know it sounds bad. Maybe I didn't start explaining the best way." He said scratching his head. "Umm, okay. Yesterday when I grabbed my hoodie from your bedroom, I could tell someone had been in there." My eyes went wide.
"How do you know?" I worried with the hem of my jumper to give me something to do.
"They left their stink over everything Bells. At first, I thought it was one of the Cullens, so I went there today to check. I caught their scent from outside, when I realised it wasn't any of them, I knew I needed to talk to them, and Alice saw something." I didn't say anything, I just waited. "The boy from around here, Riley, he's leading the newborns. The Cullens are the only coven for miles, there's no one else they could be planning to fight. That, coupled with someone being in your house, well it's not good."
"The phone." I said, before I could stop myself.
"What?" He glanced at me again.
"Last night. Someone kept calling, when I answered they didn't say anything, they just laughed, it was a man, and I didn't recognise his voice so…" My voice trailed off as he glared at me. "Don't look at me like that, maybe if you'd been a bit more forthcoming with all of this, I would have known that it was important." I was furious that he dared be angry at me.
"You're right, I'm sorry, we're just worried." I wanted to know what he meant by we, but the question died on my lips as we pulled up in front of the house. Edward and Alice stood on the porch. "I want you safe Bella. It doesn't matter how." Jake stated, at least looking slightly ashamed. I grabbed the groceries and stormed out of the truck, slamming the door behind me. "Charlie gets home at two, he can't know that you're here." I said stalking into the house not looking at either of the vampires on my porch.
