Power to Protect, Power to Destroy

Now onto the story.

Chapter 40

"It has been two weeks since the devastating attack that lead to the deaths of so many, amongst them Oscorp's Board of Directors, at the hands of the notorious Green Goblin whom, we have on good authority, is in fact Norman Osborn himself. This has led to great panic amongst the population of New York, especially as we know Osborn did not act along but in the company of two other people who have shown unsettling capabilities, one that has caused trouble in New York before, William Baker also known as Sandman, the other named Mysterio who we have just now learned is the escaped Quentin Beck." Nancy announced as she stood before the camera, delivering the news report. "Of greater concern is the recent actions taken by Oscorp which has now fallen under control of one of their own scientists, Martin Brenner, who has agreed to give an interview today."

She turned to Brenner who was smiling, a smarmy smile as if he felt nothing could touch him.

"A pleasure Miss Wheeler." He said. "It is a true tragedy what happened, which is why the security measures taken by Oscorp are necessary, we cannot allow these creatures to strike again, especially since we know the real reason behind all this and-"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Brenner, but I fail to see how road blocks, security check points and armed guards imposing forced curfew is necessary, seems more like a violation of human rights to deal with, what is simply three crazy supervillains who, let us note, we have seen one of them before and know they can be beaten." Nancy interrupted.

Brenner narrowed his eyes but continued. "That is a naive view Miss Wheeler, we have to remember that we're faced with a real mutant threat and so all these measures are necessary to hunt them down so that they cannot-"

"Mutant threat?" Nancy cut him off. "I don't recall any mutants being involved in this and by that regard, you have made questionable comments regarding mutants before, two in particular, is this really a necessity, or a personal matter-"

"This interview is over, Miss Wheeler, you should know better than to ask such questions." Brenner snapped.

With that he turned and stormed away. Nancy just shrugged and turned back to address the camera again.

Having watched the report on TV, Mike sighed.

"Man, Nancy's really got that guy's number huh?" Dustin commented.

Mike nodded. "Yeah, I just hope she knows what she's doing."

They all nodded too, sympathetic to his concerns. It wasn't just Mike and Dustin, Lucas, Max, Suzie, Jonathan and Joyce were all present too.

"Yeah...so, what is...I'm still not able to understand this, how…" Jonathan stammered.

Joyce gently touched her elder son's arm. "I know it's a lot to take in Jonathan. I've known for a while now, so I managed to get used to this, but still…"

She trailed off and the others turned to as Will finally entered, he had recovered in the two weeks that had passed, his hair was damp so he was clearly not long out of a shower. Seeing them all looking in his direction, Will sighed, gently crossing over the room to Mike. They shared a gently kiss and hug before they both settled on the nearby sofa and everybody else gathered around them.

"So...now you guys all know the truth." Will said softly. "I'm Spider-Man...all that time you've seen him, it's been me."

"You've been out there, so often, risking your life." Jonathan said, his voice shaking a little. "Saving other people and fighting those…supervillains."

Will nodded. "Yeah, it's, it's something I've got to do. I've got these powers and I've gotta use them responsibly, so, if I can help in a situation like that...I've got to do it."

They lapsed into silence for a moment.

Finally Will sighed and shook his head.

"I'm sorry guys, sorry I kept this from you all, I just...I was afraid of putting you all in danger…" He paused and then added. "Mom, you already knew...Given your inability to stay out of danger Mike, well, that and the, obvious reason are why I showed you."

Mike gave a dry laugh at that while Joyce nodded.

"Don't apologize, Will." Max said. "We get why you did it."

Lucas nodded. "Yeah, but now that we know, we can do something."

Will froze. "Wait, what, no you guys, this-"

"You don't quite get it, come check this out, we've been busy." Dustin said with a grin.

Confused Will did so, noting that even Mike was smirking now. He stopped in amazement when they entered the spare room where his suit was laid out, along with several computers and other equipment.

"We're here to help." Dustin said. "With this we can keep in contact with you, I can use this monitor to see what you see and anything you need to check, analyse or such, I can run it through that."

Lucas then directed him to two other monitors. "With Suzie helping him with that, Max and I can keep track of things that are happening in the city and pass on word."

"Then you have my station, research, ways around any security things that you might face." Mike explained. "You don't have to do it alone, Will. You have us...your Spider Team."

Will laughed at that. "That's a great name, wow, you guys...that's great, but...how do we do this."

They knew what he meant, things were still crazy, those three supervillains mentioned before, that monster Venom still on the loose and now Oscorp's recent actions, all but preventing any mutants from entering or leaving New York.

This of course meant that the mutants Brenner was really after, the real reason he was committing borderline rights violations, El and Kali, were forced into hiding, unable to help Will.

He had already told the others this and sighed. "So, without them, this will be a problem. I've already seen that I can't take those three on, not to mention Venom is out there...worse if I do try, they'll simply attack me all together again."

"So, we need to get help from these girls." Suzie mused. "But...with Oscorp acting the way it is…"

Will nodded. "Well, we've got our task then. Brenner is trying to hide the truth, his actions in that interview with Nancy prove that, that means there's evidence of what he's really up to."

"So, you plan to head to Oscorp and find it?" Mike mused.

"Find it and expose it." Will confirmed.

"Alright then, let's do this." Dustin said.

Buoyed by this and ready with their new plans, the others began firing up everything they needed to fulfil their new duties as the Spider Team, Will suited up and, making sure everything was working, Will left through the window and swung out, heading for Oscorp.
