Chapter 2: The tests
A/N: Disclaimer: I do not own Stargate SG1 or Danny Phantom characters or original storylines, all right go to the original creators of both series (Stargate SG1: Brad Wright & Jonathan Glassner. Danny Phantom: Butch Hartman.). I only own the plot and any characters created for this fanfic.
Also, I write this for fun, so while I'm trying to be faithful to the characters and storylines of the original content, I am not stressing about all the details. I was just thinking about what would happen if Danny joined the SGC when he became an adult and joined the Air Force. I'd be happy for any suggestions on how all the secrets eventually come out if you have any. I'll be trying to post on the weekends, but I work a second job that can sometimes take up what little free time I have.
Dr. Jackson followed Danny to his car once they made their way out of the complex. When Danny opened the trunk to retrieve his bag with the change of clothes in it, Daniel wondered about the second bag that looked bulkier sitting next to it. "What's up with that other bag?" He asked as Danny closed the trunk.
"It's some basic ghost hunting equipment. Growing up in Amity Park, I always carried something with me, just in case I was attacked. A habit I haven't broken." The Airman responded. "In fact I have a couple items I keep in my pocket just in case."
"Really? Mind showing me?" Dr Jackson asked, curious about what kind of tools one would use against an attacking ghost.
"I might show you the stuff in that bag some other time, but these are the items I carry in my pocket." He told the Doctor as he pulled out what looked like a small flash light and a pen at first glance.
Daniel looked at each of them has Danny handed them to him. He realized the what he first thought was a flash light was actually some kind of container, an empty one. The side had two buttons, one labeled 'release' and the other 'catch'. The other looked like it might be a laser pointer instead of a pen like he first thought.
"What do these do?" Dr Jackson asked, confused.
"Well, this one," Danny took back the small container, "is for catching ghosts so that they can get sent back to where they belong," He returned the item to his pocket, " and this one," he also took back the laser pointer, "is an ecto laser. It isn't the easiest to use, mostly because the beam can be weak enough for it to be used as a laser pointer, but it is also fairly discreet."
"So be careful borrowing any of your stuff?" Dr Jackson asked, a little worried about the damage the laser pointer could do.
"That's probably a good idea. Especially since I've been hit by some of the ecto weapons my parents invented, and they hurt." Danny agreed with the caution. He'd seen some of the burns on his friends and other humans that had gotten between an ecto blast and the ghost it was aiming for. They may not hurt humans as bad as the ghosts, but they were still effective as weapons on them.
Teal'C watched as Daniel Jackson returned with Airman Fenton. The child was a surprising addition to their team, one Teal'C was uncertain of. He knew how brash new warriors could be on a battlefield, the strength of youth affecting their judgment. He knew that the only cure for that brashness was experience, but it could still cause trouble for his team in the meantime. He hoped he could see something in Captain Carter's fight with Airman Fenton that will show him his worries were unfounded.
Colonel O'Neil sent the boy to go change for the sparring session. They all turned to Daniel Jackson while waiting for Airman Fenton to return. "What do you think of the kid, Jackson?" Colonel O'Neil asked.
"I don't know yet. The way he talks about the ghosts in his hometown, it makes me wonder about what they actually are. And despite not currently being in Amity Park, he is still prepared to face whatever keeps attacking his hometown. He said his parents are both ghost hunters, so he has been targeted in the past by their enemies, so that might be part of it."
"Believing in ghost stories is something new." Colonel O'Neil commented.
"Well Sir, with some of the other things we've come across, it wouldn't surprise me if there is technology out there that can make one seem to be a ghost." Captain Carter added.
"Well, if we get a chance we might be going on a field trip to Amity Park to check it out." Colonel O'Neil informed them.
"Well, let me know if you need a guide. I know a few people who would be happy to show you all the best haunts." Airman Fenton said as he entered the gym again. "Captain Carter, I'm ready to start sparring whenever you are."
"Well, Kid, you ready to meet your maker?" Colonel O'Neil joked.
"I'm already halfway there." Airman Fenton quipped back.
"I'm ready to see what you got." Captain Carter headed to the sparring mat with Airman Fenton.
As they got into position Teal'C and the others watched on with varying levels of curiosity. Teal'C may be the strongest fighter on the team, but Captain Carter was still a strong opponent to test the child on his skills when it comes to hand-to-hand combat. Airman Fenton seemed almost relaxed as he faced Captain Carter on the mat, though it wasn't in a way the portrayed arrogance. He was ready for Captain Carter's strike when it came and blocked it easily, with a returned strike of his own.
As the battle continued, Teal'C noticed something seemed a bit off with the child's fighting style. It almost seemed like he was holding back. He was still landing strikes against his opponent, taunting the Captain while he did so, but there were openings he seemed to miss or ignore. Airman Fenton also seemed to be aiming for places on the captain where he would cause the least damage. When it was Captain Carter who landed the final blow of the sparring match, it wasn't exactly a surprise to Teal'C, in fact he wondered if that was the outcome Airman Fenton was after.
"Colonel O'Neil, may I spar with Airman Fenton?" Teal'C asked before anyone else could make a comment on the fight that they had witnessed.
"Teal'C, he already lost against Sam, why do you want to humiliate him any further?" Daniel Jackson asked.
"Teal'C be my guest. Fenton, you don't mind going another round do you?" Colonel O'Neil replied, ignoring Daniel Jackson's protests.
"Don't worry, Dr Jackson. I'm still in pretty good shape after sparring with Captain Carter, despite my loss. Teal'C, right?" At the man in question's nod, Airman Fenton continued, "I hope I'm not too easy of an opponent for you."
"Indeed," was Teal'C's only reply.
"You both can start whenever you're ready." The room was quiet while Teal'C stared at his opponent. He watched and waited for a few moments for Airman Fenton to make the first move, watching his body language for any sign of it.
When Airman Fenton finally made a move, it almost seemed too slow. As Teal'C blocked it and prepared his own attack, he noted how it felt like it stopped short after connecting. "Geez, What are you made of? I think I've hit walls that are softer." Airman Fenton teased the Jaffa.
Teal'C ignored the child's continued teasing and taunts, focusing on his opponent's movements instead. Noticing Airman Fenton was holding back the same way he was while fighting Captain Carter, Teal'C decided to push him a little harder, trying to make him slip up and show his true capabilities.
Teal'C continued to draw the fight out, avoiding the opening Airman Fenton seemed to provide for a winning hit while still trying to push the child into actually fighting back. Airman Fenton's ability to avoid or counteract some of the most damaging hits fueled Teal'C's suspicions. As he continued to increase the speed of his attacks, Teal'C mistakenly struck his opponent with his full force, except he never felt it hit. He saw his hand go into the Airman's torso before he dodged out of the way, he was fairly sure of it.
"Hey, are you trying to kill me the rest of the way?" Danny quipped as he held his side where Teal'C had seen his hand enter. His clean, unbloodied hand.
"Alright, that's enough,"O'Neil looked at Teal'C with concern and confusion. "Both of you go shower off and change. Fenton, we'll see you tomorrow, bright and early to show you around the place. Go home to your wife and work on settling in. Teal'C, find me when you are done getting cleaned up."
Danny knew he had messed up when he'd used his intangibility in his fight with Teal'C. It had been an instinctual reaction to the hit that he knew was coming from the other man. He had been surprised by the power and speed behind Teal'C's attacks, making it hard to maintain the amount of power and skill he displayed just now. And now Teal'C had seen his hand go through him.
Teal'C kept staring at him while they headed into the locker room. Once in the locker room Teal'C asked him, "How did my last hit not harm you? It seemed to go through you instead."
Teal'C had just confirmed he had seen him use his powers just now and Danny wasn't sure what to tell him. So instead he asked, "How much would that have hurt if it had? And how are you so strong and fast?"
"It would have hurt greatly. I can not answer your last question at this moment." Teal'C replied.
"Well, I'm glad it didn't connect. I'd prefer to stay out of the infirmary, especially on my first day here." Danny continued to ignore Teal'C's original question as he headed to the showers. He was not looking forward to when Colonel O'Neil heard about what happened and decided to seek answers as well.
