Rosalie watched her mate leave with Emmett. Her dead heart clenched. Not even half an hour ago Edward was inside of the house…inside of the bathroom where Bella was showering. Anger didn't begin to cover what she was feeling. She was furious. The rage she felt was overwhelming and threatened to consume her. Even Jasper struggled to be near her.
Now that Bella was gone there was nothing holding back her fury. If she ever found Edward, he was dead. She didn't care what his reasoning was or how misguided he may be. She didn't care about her promise to Carlisle, to give him a chance to save Edward. She was going to rip him limb from limb and burn the pieces. Bella lost her innocence because of him and he invaded her privacy not even an hour ago.
"Rose," Jasper choked. She glanced at her brother. He looked ready to tear out his own hair. Alice was rubbing his back, trying to balance out his emotions and soothe him as best she could.
Rosalie closed her eyes and counted to ten. She was still angry but she was able to get her emotions under control, for Jasper's sake. "Sorry Jazz," she said softly.
"I know you're angry," Jasper started. "Even without my gift it would be obvious. We will find Edward and we will deal with this; I promise you. But for now, we need to talk to the wolves."
Rosalie ran a hand through her hair. She couldn't figure out how everything went so wrong so fast. Jasper was right. They needed to talk to the wolves before Edward did something. But all she wanted to do was run to Seattle and watch over Bella. It was stupid. Emmett would protect Bella with his life, she knew that. But in this moment, it seemed like only she could take care of her mate.
Jasper touched her arm. "She's fine. You know she is. Come on. I already called Sam."
They met with Sam and Paul in an open field that stretched across both sides of the border. By the time Jasper and Rosalie arrived, Sam and Paul were already there waiting. Rosalie looked around, looking for any sign that the other wolves were waiting nearby. Rosalie couldn't see, or hear, any. It was good, but surprising. It showed a level of trust that Rosalie didn't realize the wolves had.
"Jasper, Rosalie," Paul greeted. He wasn't as friendly as normal but Rosalie figured it was because this was an official visit.
"Paul," Rosalie said with a nod. "Sam."
"You wanted to meet," Sam said focusing on Jasper. He was one that didn't want to trust vampires. He respected Jasper because of what he had done but he didn't want to interact with the rest if he could avoid it.
"It's about Edward." Jasper said getting straight to the point. He could already feel how tense Rosalie was and he had no desire to drag this out.
Paul growled. "What did he do?" Paul demanded.
Rosalie smiled slightly. As much as she didn't care about the wolves, she was glad Paul was on their side. "Bella was showering, to get ready for her trip with Emmett," Rosalie started. "Edward was able to get into the bathroom and leave her a note without anyone noticing."
Paul started shaking. Under normal circumstances Rosalie and Jasper would be running. But they knew Paul. They trusted Paul. He was angry but not at them. "I don't understand," Sam said slowly.
Jasper glanced at Paul. "How much did you tell him?" he asked curious.
Paul closed his eyes and focused on calming down so he could answer. Rosalie wasn't sure if Jasper was helping or not but she didn't particularly care. "They know everything I do," Paul answered once he was calm.
"Edward is obsessed with Bella," Jasper said. "He assumes, wrongly, that she is his mate. She is not. But he won't stop until he gets here. We believe he will attempt to turn all of you against us." Jasper paused to let his words sink in. "You must not believe anything he says. Check with us if you must. But don't believe him. He doesn't care if you live or not. All he wants is Bella."
Paul nodded. "I'll do whatever I can," he promised.
Sam frowned. "I will not put the pack, or La Push, in danger," he said.
"We don't need you to do anything," Jasper assured him. "All we ask is that you don't believe what you hear from him. That you give us the benefit of a doubt. If you can't trust us, then trust me."
"If Edward's a danger…" Sam started.
"We will deal with him," Jasper promised. "We don't believe he is a danger to Forks, only Bella. And we will keep Bella safe."
"Sam. I will help them," Paul said. "Bella is friends with my imprint. Not only that but she is also human. She deserves to be protected. Her only crime is choosing her mate over Edward. Her mate that has protected her. You've seen it Sam. You've seen how Rosalie is with Bella. And you've seen what Edward has done. Don't tell me you agree with it."
Rosalie was never more grateful to have Paul in Bella's life. Though he was raised to hate vampires, he was doing everything in his power to help her. It may have been mostly for Bella but she didn't care. She owed him and she would find a way to repay him.
Sam sighed and ran a hand through his short hair. "Fine. We will keep an eye on the boundary and Paul will keep in contact with you. Paul is right. Bella is human and it's our job to protect her. We need to have a meeting with the rest of the Cullens. We need to know what to do about Edward."
Jasper nodded. "We will speak to Carlisle. I do know Carlisle wants a chance to reason with Edward." Paul and Rosalie growled. "After what happened today, it's likely Carlisle won't have that chance anymore."
"We'll call Paul with a date and time," Rosalie added. "The sooner the better."
Sam nodded once and ran off into the woods. "I'm sorry about him," Paul said rubbing the back of his neck. "He's torn, you know? It goes against our instincts to help. But it's the right thing to do. Listen, you know Edward better than anyone… Is Angela in danger?"
Rosalie and Jasper exchanged looks. "I don't think so," Jasper said slowly. "Edward only wants Bella and he knows he can't hurt humans to get to her. That would quickly turn Bella against him. But I wouldn't be surprised if someone got hurt in his attempt to get Bella."
"Bella already got hurt," Paul said sadly.
Rosalie growled at the reminder. "I won't let it happen again. Carlisle already knows I will kill him if he threatens her again."
"He already did," Paul pointed out.
Rosalie closed her eyes. She hated that Paul was right. She willed herself to calm down. She wished Bella was here with her. The only thing keeping her mostly calm, was the fact that she knew Bella was safe in Seattle with Emmett. The only person she was safer with was Jasper. "I know," she said after a minute. "If it comes down to it, I will kill him, with or without Carlisle's blessing."
Paul nodded. "Good. I'll help."
A wolf's howl ended the conversation. "What's going on?" Jasper asked. His eyes darted around the field looking for any sign of danger. He didn't see anything but that didn't mean there wasn't anything there.
"I don't know," Paul said with a frown. "I gotta go."
"We'll patrol the border," Jasper decided. "If you need help, if you want us to come help. Come find us. We need to work together. Treaty be damned."
"I'll pass the message along," Paul promised. "I think you're right Jasper. We need to work together."
Paul ran off into the woods so he could phase while Jasper and Rosalie took off along the treaty line. "What do you think?" Rosalie asked her brother. She kept pace with him but let him lead. While he wasn't a great tracker, he was the best in the family.
"Peter and Charlotte should be here any day now," Jasper started. He took a sharp right and Rosalie quickly followed. "I'm hoping it's them and the wolves simply don't recognize the scent."
"But you don't think so," Rosalie finished.
"No," Jasper admitted. "They know better than to go near the treaty line. If it was them, they would have gone straight to the house."
"So, it's Edward," Rosalie growled.
"Possibly," Jasper said. He stopped suddenly. Rosalie hadn't realized and kept going for a few seconds before realizing Jasper wasn't there. She turned around and was back by his side in less than a second. "I don't think it's Edward."
"Why do you say that?" Rosalie questioned. "It has to be Edward."
Jasper turned to face her. "You need to look past your hatred. I get it. I really do. If it were Alice, I would have already killed him. But you're so blinded by this hatred you can't see past it. Look around, what's missing?"
Rosalie looked around but didn't see anything. She didn't understand what Jasper was getting at. She took a deep breathe and then it hit her. "I don't smell him," she admitted.
"Exactly," Jasper exclaimed.
"But I smell another vampire," Rosalie continued. "Someone was here."
"I don't think it's a coincidence," Jasper said. "We rarely get nomads here. The odds of one randomly showing up is small."
"Should we follow the scent?" Rosalie asked.
Jasper spent a full minute debating. He wanted to and knew they needed to. But with only two of them it could be dangerous. He would feel better if there were more of them. But if they didn't follow the scent then they lose it. "Yes, we need to follow it," he decided.
They took off running again, following the new scent. The scent wasn't a straight line. They wove in and out of the trees, retracing their steps at times. "This isn't right," Rosalie muttered as they stopped in another clearing. "We're going around in circles."
"You're right," Jasper said. "This isn't some nomad looking around. Whoever it is led us here… but why."
Rosalie and Jasper turned at the sound of clapping. Rosalie growled and dropped into a crouch at the sight of Edward. She lunged at him but Jasper grabbed onto her and held her back. "Let me go," she spat. "I'll kill him."
Edward's eyes narrowed. "Such aggression, what would Bella say?" he taunted. He crossed his arms over his chest. "Where is my mate, by the way?"
Rosalie growled at him. "She's not your mate," she snarled.
"Rosalie calm down," Jasper hissed. "This isn't helping and you can't take him in a fight." He turned his attention to Edward. "Are you working with a nomad?"
Edward laughed. "Why does it matter to you Jasper?" he asked.
"You know bringing a nomad around a human is dangerous," Jasper told him. "You claim to love Bella but you're putting her in danger by having a human drinker around."
Edward's eyes narrowed. "Don't you dare question my love for my mate," he snarled. Rosalie growled. "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have to get help to keep my mate safe."
"You're stupider than you look if you think a nomad will protect Bella," Rosalie spat. "But that's fine. I'll kill the nomad and you."
Edward cocked his head to the side. "What makes you think there's only one nomad?" he questioned. He smirked at the anger in Rosalie and Jasper's thoughts. "Where is she?"
Years of practice kept their thoughts hidden from their former brother. If he found out Bella's location… it wouldn't come from them. "You'll never know," Rosalie taunted. "But don't worry. She's safe from you."
Edward glared at them. "Where is she?" he roared. "Give me my mate."
There was a growl from behind Rosalie and Jasper. Neither of them turned around. Rosalie knew it was Paul behind her. She could smell him. "It seems you're outnumbered here Edward," Rosalie said triumphantly. "Out of respect for Carlisle, I'll give you one chance. One chance to leave Forks, and leave my mate alone."
It appeared that Edward was considering her deal. But then he smirked and cocked his head to the side. "I've tolerated Bella's attachment to you for far too long. I will get my mate back and you won't stand in my way. I'm afraid this conversation has come to an end. See you soon."
Edward ran off and Paul sprinted after him. Rosalie moved to chase as well but Jasper grabbed her arm. "Don't," he said. Rosalie stared at him. "He has nomads working with him. We need to talk to the others and come up with a plan to stop them and protect Bella."
"Perhaps we can help," a voice said from behind them.
Jasper and Rosalie turned around. Jasper grinned at the sight of the two vampires in front of him. "Peter, Charlotte, about time you two got here."
