Author Notes : About a year has passed since the last chapter. I spaced it out more than any other story in this series, because the evolution of Amaya's disease is slow. I couldn't have the story happening in weeks only, nor have fast-paced action. Hopefully, you don't mind my years skipping in between chapters.
Hiashi went to the Hokage Tower for the monthly Clan head council. He entered the meeting room, only to find Uchiha Fugaku was there by himself. In order to not seem rude, Hiashi sat next to him.
"Is your daughter doing well on her missions? She's on Kurenai's team, according to my son Sasuke," Fugaku said. They graduated a few months ago now.
"Yes, indeed. Her sensei seems to be a good jonin, they are a team focused on tracking, I think it'll suit Hinata well. They might have their first C-rank mission soon, if all goes well," Hiashi replied, not sure if he was meant to continue the small talk. Since Fugaku was an advisor of the Hokage, he was interacting more with other clan heads during meetings, or with people in general in the streets. While he had many demands to be asked of him that bothered him, he was friendlier than he had been before. Nonetheless, the last time they talked at length was when Fugaku himself came by to inform Hitomi's family of her death on a classified Anbu mission. Then, Fugaku had seen it fit to tell Hiashi as well, as they'd crossed paths when he was on his way to leave. He had felt the need to tell him of the news, and not just to explain an Uchiha's presence inside the compound, or so it seemed.
"Sasuke should be doing it soon as well. I could continue on this topic, but before others come in, I wanted to let you know that one of my clan's policemen came to me. He noticed something odd about one Hyuuga child. Every time he sees her in the streets, she has her Byakugan activated."
Hiashi immediately assumed he was talking about Amaya. She was the most likely to use it at random times. But Hiashi let Fugaku express himself, making a motion with his hand to signify to continue.
"I'm telling you, because, as a Sharingan user, I know excessive use can be damaging to the eye, and I assume the Byakugan to have the same effect. If it drains the normal vision, I prefer you knowing and being able to educate the young minds about possible irreversible damages. I guess she just got it and is excited to see the world with it and testing her limits?"
Hiashi hummed. He looked around. A Sarutobi man and Inuzuka Tsume had entered, but most clan heads weren't there yet, so he still had time to explain. The gossipers were yet to arrive. He started to talk about Amaya's condition, and then he decided to be specific, "Hinata graduated just before Amaya started the academy. When they don't have missions or training with their team, Neji or Hinata bring her around the village. But when they can't, she's on her own, and her Byakugan works well compared to her normal vision, so she tends to overuse it despite our warnings. I assumed you were talking about Amaya. To my knowledge, she's the only child who uses it in the middle of the street. She needs it to navigate in crowded streets safely. I'm not going to stop her, even if I'm concerned it might get her vision to worsen with time."
The Sarutobi man, one that Hiashi didn't recognize and led Hiashi to wonder where the clan head was, decided to jump in the discussion.
"Is it possible that the little girl you are talking about is in my son's Konohamaru's class? With Iruka sensei?"
Hiashi suddenly realized the man in front of him was the Third Hokage's son. He suddenly recalled his cousin, the clan head, got injured during a mission and was at the hospital. Hiashi didn't really know if Konohamaru was in Amaya's class, and he only knew of Iruka as Hinata's teacher, so if he also taught Amaya, he didn't know. So, as an answer, he shrugged.
"Konohamaru told me he had a blind Hyuuga girl in his class, that's all."
There was only one blind Hyuuga child that he knew of. Hiashi needed to have a talk with his brother. How did he not know his niece had the same teacher as Hinata?
Suddenly, Inuzuka Tsume turned around from the conversation she had with Aburame Shibi about Kurenai sensei.
"Hiashi, I need to talk to you about something after the meeting."
Hiashi frowned. He wondered if it was an issue with their children's sensei, considering who she was previously talking with. While other teams had more experienced jonin, like Fugaku's son who had Hatake Kakashi, Yuuhi Kurenai was promoted only recently. But so far, he hasn't had problems with her. And he didn't like drama and rumors, so whatever Tsume was going to tell him, he wasn't particularly interested in knowing.
The Hokage started the meeting. The agenda for this meeting wasn't very interesting. Hiashi just wanted to go home with his family tonight. He had trained a little too hard in the morning, and had slightly injured his shoulder, and was due for a dose of medicine soon.
Hiashi had forgotten about Tsume, or should he say, pretended not to remember, when the meeting ended, but she grabbed him by the arm. The same side he injured his shoulder. He kept a straight face only because of a strong will, but it felt like lightning went through his neck down to his fingertips.
"What do you want?"
"It's about the blind girl you were talking about."
"Look, Fugaku already expressed his worries, I'll handle it with my clansmen," Hiashi said, annoyed. He didn't exactly like the personality of the woman, and just wanted to get home to swallow those painkillers. Especially now that Tsume made his shoulder hurt even more.
"I was going to suggest something, but if you're not interested, I can leave," Tsume suddenly barked.
Hiashi frowned and pulled his head back in surprise. Suddenly, that was a bit interesting.
"I'll hear you out, then."
"I have a cousin who met a man raising puppies to guide the blinds. The guy doesn't live in Konoha, but my cousin was very interested in his methods and has been spending a bit of time with him. If your blind clan member isn't allergic to dogs, I could see with my cousin if we could get you a trained dog from the man, or train the puppy ourselves in our compound."
That was a nice suggestion. Hiashi was impressed with how suddenly Tsume was interested in helping him. She probably didn't even know Amaya was his niece. "I'll ask Hizashi if he'd like to have a dog in his house. Amaya loves animals, she'll surely be enthusiastic about it. I'll let you know the answer."
Hiashi left with a little smile on his face. For once, Tsume didn't get on his nerves during a meeting. And while Hinata was not a complainer nor talked behind her teammates' back, Hiashi knew Tsume's son to be similar in personality. His introvert Hinata, and likely Shino, probably got headaches sometimes because of Kiba. But Hinata loved Kiba's puppy, and so did Amaya after meeting the dog when Kiba visited the compound once. Tsume's idea was brilliant. With a dog guiding her, she wouldn't need the Byakugan as much. Now, was Amaya old enough to care for a dog by herself, Hizashi and his wife would decide.
Author notes: Where I live, the earliest one can have a guide dog is 13 or 14 years old, but I figured that if Kakashi lived alone at five, (and so did Naruto in his first life), it wasn't that bad to have a 8 year old kid have a guide dog.
