-๑-๑ ஜ ๑- Chapter 31: Volcanoes -๑ ๑-๑-

Of course.

He hated drinking.

Thrumming pain only intensified by the sound of rain beating the building from various angles greeted Shizuo first in the morning.

Weary eyes stared at the ceiling as he tried to ignore the soft but undeniable hint of a hangover.

After Izaya had left the self declared party Shinra had also forced everyone to a drinking contest. Shizuo had been against participating but that damned doctor actually guilt tripped him into joining.

Groaning, he pushed himself out of bed. The sun had already risen, although it was barely visible. Clouds, as thick as the wine wrapping his head, had settled in the sky.

Usually the survey corps would set out to train even earlier than this. But since they had been oh so successful they actually had a day off. No training. No mission.

Shizuo's guts clenched despite the lack of work.

The next mission.

They hadn't received any yet, but one was bound to come.

Too fresh was the memory of the last. Of the betrayal in their own rows. Izaya's near death and the aftermath.

Pulling on the usual attire, Shizuo couldn't help but think about Kadota. They were out there, giving their best, not knowing that this mission didn't even serve a purpose other than to get rid of their captain.

They had done their best- but for what?

A slight hint of anger choked his throat as his steps circled to the hallway.

Staying inside his room all day was of course an option and probably a preferred one to meeting anyone in this wall.

… anyone except Izaya.

The wooden floor creaked softly when Shizuo strolled down the hallway.

It was quiet. Apart from some retching noises coming from somewhere to his right the rest of the survey corps seemed to be tight asleep still.

Frowning slightly, Shizuo quickly made his way up the stairs. He could very much pass on witnessing his comrade's morning nausea from drinking too much.

It was equally annoying as it was relieving to know how blissfully unaware everyone else inside these walls was. They had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. The only danger they saw were the titans.

Sure they were scary, but an easy enemy. It was something to fight, something fairly easy to kill in terms of consequences.

But their superiors?

It was only when he arrived in front of Izaya's door that Shizuo halted and his hand, having been ready to knock, froze.

Ah.

…What was he doing?

It had become such a habit to search for the flea that he didn't even think much about it.

Izaya had been tired if not to say exhausted. He deserved some rest.

Why would he bother him first thing in the morning?

Awkward silence greeted the blond as he lowered the hand again.

He didn't even have a reason to trail back here.

They had the day off, no training was planned, no mission set, no form of interaction required.

And still…

Raising his hand he knocked, casting all former thoughts of rationality aside.

He knocked and waited.

Silence.

Unusual silence greeted the blond.

Was Izaya not there?

And suddenly his former fear sprang back to mind like a spider in a face.

The raven's expression on the battlefield, Shiki, the mess in his room, the way Izaya retreated earlier than all of them to his dorms- a rope.

Flying to the doorhandle he forced the damned thing open- only to realize it had never been locked.

Silence of a more mocking kind greeted him as he looked at an empty room.

There was no rope.

No Izaya dangling lifeless from the ceiling.

Releasing the breath he hadn't realized he had held he stepped inside his superiors chamber.

Shizuo didn't even know where the idea that Izaya might just take his life had come from. But after everything that had happened, after all his efforts having been in vain, after actually seeing the raven lose it on the battlefield… he couldn't even start to imagine the pressure on his mind.

The mental exhaustion from all those years, piling up day, by day, by day-

Izaya was by no means weak, but this was a frustration of a different magnitude.

Wordlessly he let his eyes trail. The room was just as spotless as it had been the previous day. No object placed in the wrong order and not a sprinkling of dust was to be seen. Had he not witnessed Izaya's outburst he would have never realized how hard these curcumstances brought the raven down.

Sighingg the blond let his hand brush through his hair.

He wasn't supposed to be here when the flea wasn't.

Hand back on the doorhandle he was about to leave, when he spotted a book. A heavy leather wrapping protected pages of yellow color and Shizuo recognized it as the one Izaya had read the previous day. It was the one that told stories about what laid beyond the wall.

About sceneries he had bever seen and places his captain wanted to be in.

Curiosity took the upper hand and Shizuo approached the raven's bed.

Izaya had left it on top of the blankets, open even, as if he had skimmed through the pages seconds before leaving.

Letting his body slump down onto the bed he grasped the piece of literature. It seemed Izaya had left at a passage that talked about ice. White as paper and light it was pictured to rain from the sky. Doubt flashed in Shizuo's mind as he looked at the illustration. Piles of the material were collected in the landscape covering everything like sugar.

It was… hard to believe. But Izaya seemed to hold a certain truth to them. The way he looked at the book and talked about the various ideas had shown as much.

Humming softly, Shizuo turned a page. Again it was filled with illustrations of the white substance. This time, however, it was covering a lake. People were illustrated walking across a river and Shizuo couldn't help but frown.

It was one thing for ice to fall from the sky, but building bridges on its own? So sturdy that they endured a human's weight?

Disbelieving, he looked at the illustration.

How would that even work?

Wouldn't the ice dissolve in water? Not to mention break apart? Having the material float on the surface like foam seemed much easier to believe than this.

"You are reading my book?" Startled, the blond's head shot up from the pages.

Izaya.

He was standing in the door frame, amused it seemed by his unexpected find.

Ah-

"Sorry, I didn't mean to enter your room without permission," Shizuo quickly apologized, but Izaya merely shrugged as he entered his room.

"I don't mind."

The door was closed and the raven pulled parts the maneuver gear off his clothes. It was funny really, he was in no confition to even use the gear yet, but for matters of pretense and public appearances he had to wear it anyway.

Hanging the gear over a chair by his small desk the raven couldn't help but sigh softly.

Shizuo heard.

He had been about to ask where he had been, but somehow… the flea seemed off.

Kinda not as cheery, no not cheery, but something was just missing, that usual glint to his eyes.

"Did something happen?" he questioned instead. Izaya paused, his lips moved as if to tell, but slipped shut again in under a second.

A soft but dishonest smile dpread slong his lips.

"Why do you think so?"

"... just a hunch."

"Those guts of yours again?" Izaya sighed as he walked over. Unceremoniously he let himself slump into bed, right next to the blond.

Eyes closed, arms spread, he just laid there for a moment letting silence spread like a comfortable blanket.

"... so?" Shizuo tried again, causing the raven to stir as he turned his head to at least spare him a glance.

"Just tiresome conversations." Izaya informed quietly, only making room for more questions.

Conversations?

"With who?"

Sitting back up the raven ignored the blond's question, instead reaching for the pages of the book. A number of them was turned and Izaya pointed at the bottom.

"This is my favorite part." He informed curtly, efficiently avoiding the topic as he drew Shizuo's attention to the illustration.

Izaya didn't want to talk about the topic. Even Shizuo realized as much and so he followed the raven's gaze.

It was a section talking about the water. And a vast amount of it. In fact it was supposed to be a lake so large that no land was to be seen from it.

Butvthat wasn't all. Creatures, unbelievably colorful and vast in size and shape were said to traverse the liquid.

"Do you really want to visit these places?" Shizuo questioned as he let his eyes flicker through the pages.

"If possible, sure." Izaya shrugged.

If possible?

"Why wouldn't it be?"

After all, Izaya was the captain of the survey corps. He was the one heading outside the wall the most of all. If anyone had a chance to experience these things then it was him, no?

But Izaya shook his head with an awfully frustrated sigh.

"Because of my chains, Shizu-chan." Sadness seemed to taint Izaya's expression as he shrugged. "Words, promises, threats, everything inside this wall every single person I have ever spoken to, I'm sitting in a net built of a thousand strings. And moving wrong just once could get me entangled and eaten by a big fat spider."

A deep frown creased through Shizuo's forehead.

Of course.

Izaya wasn't talking about a single person doing this to him, but several, a whole construct. Shiki, the king, the royal guards- Shizuo failed to grasp the number but he knew what the raven was feeling. Back at the court when they questioned him about what happened outside the walls- Shizuo felt it. So strongly, so cold.

Harsh.

Bitter.

The pure power they owned.

One wrong words spoken at the wrong time could get Izaya killed, just like that. By law.

Shizuo couldn't even start to imagine what kind of eggshells Izaya was walking on every day.

Without thinking the blond reached out for the raven. Softly, like stroking a stray cat, his fingertips brushed across Izaya's head.

Only upon facing a very surprised expression did Shizuo realize his mistake.

"Sorry-" he mumbled quickly, retracting the hand as fast as he had forwarded it. But to his great relief only laughter followed.

"Are you by any chance trying to cheer me up?" Izaya questioned, not taking any offense in the slightest.

Shizuo was relieved.

Not because Izaya wasn't mad, but because he was smiling.

"... maybe. A little," he mumbled with a hint of a playful shrug.

The raven snorted, "I don't think anyone has ever tried something like this." Then he paused. For just a moment.

As awkward as it was, Izaya appreciated the action. It was the closest to warmth he ever found inside these shitty walls.

Stealing the book from Shizuo's lap the raven skimmed through the pages while casually letting his back lean on Shizuo´s shoulder.

"Look, this is a chapter you might like," he declared, pointing at pages coloured in the deepest red.

"Volcanoes."

Illustrations of burning mountains were depicted and Shizuo glanced at the pictures in doubt.

"Vol-what?"

Pointing towards one of the mountains Izaya tried to explain, "Conical mountains created by a rupture in the planetary mass. They reach deep down into the earth's center, creating room for-" but he stopped midway. A chuckle escaped his lips and he took a detour in his words. "In short mountains that spew fire." He turned, wanting to bring the book closer to Shizuo's eyes. "They are-" and suddenly Shizuo was just a tad closer than he thought. Having leant over to take a better look at the unbelievably cool mountains and having Izaya do the same to show him the illustration forced them into a proximity neither of them had seen coming.

Eyes mere centimeters apart Izaya swallowed. A spark of something Izaya didn't quite expect ignited at the proximity and suddenly he was too aware of the blond's overwhelming presence.

Of those deep brown trusting eyes.

Of his overwhelming strength.

Of his gentle touch.

Of the previous night.

His dick jumped and his guts suddenly did a backflip.

"hot," he finished his sentence, the word suddenly holding a billion more meanings.

And suddenly Izaya was just tired. Tired of everything.

Of not being able to do what he wanted.

Of not knowing how long he would even be alive in the first place-

"Say, Shizu-chan, do you think I'm hot?"

"What?" Shizuo asked, not angry, just breathless. Quiet.

It caused Izaya's breath to hitch and logic to die.

Curious eyes locked onto the blond's lips.

Aaaah-

This was bad.

All too gladly his mind circled back to last night's fantasies.

About the blond taking him however he pleased. About the craving heat gathering in his groin and an unspeakable impulse setting his hand into motion.

Before he knew it he had tugged the blond's shirt and pulled him in for a kiss.

A short one.

A mere brush of lips- yet so intimate. Soft and gentle.

Coming to his senses almost immediately Izaya let go, retreating from the blond.

He was an idiot.

Shizuo stared at him like a deer caught in headlights.

An idiot.

What had he done?

Quickly Izaya regained his posture. Awkwardness defined his voice as he pushed himself away.

"Sorry," Izaya's voice hurried, "that was uncalled for, I-" but the raven didn't get to finish his words.

Because suddenly there were hands on him. The fancy book and previous center of their attention hit the floor. Shizuo turned, and before Izaya knew it he was pulled into the blond.

Lips merged once more where they had briefly touched before, hands tightened their hold on his skin.

This time the kiss was not brief.

It was hot.

Intense.

Leftvshortly only to continue after a short heap of breath.

A set of glances was exchanged quickly, mirroring nothing but equal desire as Shizuo's hand traveled to Izaya's neck, his spine- the rim of his shirt.

Feeling those fingers brush across sensitive skin a soft gasp elicited from Izaya's throat.

They paused. For just a second.

Eyes met, words unspoken.

Izaya couldn't even remember the last time he felt like that.

Everything suddenly felt so hot inside the room.

And before he knew it the blond pushed him down.

Delicious gasps and short heaps of breath filled the air and Shizuo's mind. He wanted to make Izaya feel good- nothing but that thought circled in his mind as he leant down. Kisses trailed down Izaya's hot skin, hands traveled underneath his shirt.

He couldn't stop himself. Trailing over Izaya's hip, over an obvious burning arousal Izaya grasped the bedsheets hard.

It felt so good-

"Shizu-chan-" he moaned softly-

he wanted Shizuo to touch him, to tease him, violate him, just take him however he pleased.

His hair and shirt was a mess.

His eyes glistened red.

Shizuo's hand fulfilled zhe unspoken favour as it dipped inside his pants.

Groans of pleasure escaped Izaya's throat. A hand flew to Izaya's mouth to keep quiet as Shizuo stroked.

And god the friction felt heavenly.

So good-

So different compared to himself-

Pants for air left his lips as his hands gripped the bed sheets.

The weight of Shizu-chan´s body pressing him down- the movement-

His mind just drowned in the sudden affection- in this craving heat-

"Fuck-"

Don't stop- dont´stop-

Leaning over the raven, Shizuo kissed his neck, his ear, drinking the whimpers it brought forth.

The hand sped up.

The raven's breath hitched- his hand from the bed sheets flew to Shizuo's back clutching the shirt.

"Fuck-"

Good.

Just so-

"Shizu-cha-"

A heavy rupture shook the raven as Izaya came hard, a deep groan muffling itself as he pressed his face into Shizuo's shoulder.

Just when exactly his other hand had found its way into Shizuo´s hair he didn't know, but now it was there, grasping those strains hard as he caught his breath.

The air was brimming with heat, his ears ringing in waves of pleasure.

An unnatural moment of peace settled and their glances met.

And almost immediately the peacefull moment made of glass cracked as Izaya's mind flew to alert.

What had he done.

This was Shizuo.

He was his captain.

This-

A loud knock interrupted them causing both parties to jerk in surprise.

"Captain Orihara?"

Mikado's voice.

Only briefly Izaya's mind tore itself from the blond to identify the unwelcomed interruption.

Shiki's messenger.

Catching his breath quickly, Izaya cleared his throat.

"One second-"
