The two agents looked at Hunnigan in disbelief, hoping to God that she was joking until they saw her expression and found that she was completely serious.
"You cannot be serious."
"Look, I don't want to hear it. You two are the best ones for the job." Ingrid explains, holding the files to her chest.
"Hunnigan, how are we supposed to pull this off? Neither of our apartments are big enough for all three of us."
"That's why I had agents set up a safe house of sorts for all of you. Redfield and Valentine will be tailing all of you as well as other BSAA agents and some of our own agents. You'll have 24/7 access to backup should you need it."
Leon nodded as Hunnigan gestured for them to follow, the sound of her heels echoing on the floor as she went to reception so they could have a flat surface to look through them.
"This is everything that you need to know about her. From allergies to the school she'll be attending, her name. Redfield and Valentine did a good job downloading the files from their software."
Helena took the file, looking at one of the pictures of the girl's arm, seeing a number tattooed onto her. Helena felt her blood boil as she saw that the same number was written as her name.
"110247? They tattooed her like the damn Nazis would?"
Hunnigan sighed, "unfortunately yes. As soon as it was determined that she'd need some protection, we had one of our doctors remove the tattoo to help keep things inconspicuous once she's out in the world. As for the name? She may have one, we won't know more until she wakes up."
Helena nodded, taking a small envelope out of the file before handing the rest to Leon to look over. Helena opened the envelope to see one silver ring and two fake diamond rings.
"These are your wedding bands. They have built in trackers so should something happen; all you need to do is activate them by pressing this small button on the side." She explains, showing them the barely noticeable button on the sides of the rings.
Helena nodded, "How long will this last?"
"Hard to tell. Could be as short as a few months or as long as a year. It depends on how long it takes to bring down C.A.T Co and track down any living relatives."
"And what happens if you can't track down any living relatives?" Leon asks as he put his ring on and Helena put both of hers on.
"Then unfortunately she'll have to be in the custody of the state."
Leon nodded and looked through the things that Chris and Jill had found until they heard a crash coming from the kids' room and the three of them rushed over. The three rushed in to find one of the agents on the ground, seemingly unconscious, and the little girl throwing whatever she could at the doctor who was just trying to check her vitals.
"Hey!" Leon yells, making the kid pause and drop the glass vase she was holding, causing it to shatter on the linoleum flooring and ran back to the bed, sitting as far back on it as she possibly could with her knees to her chest.
Helena looked at Leon and slowly approached the young girl, not wanting to scare her more than she already was.
"What's your name?"
The little girl didn't respond for a few minutes, making Helena frown.
The poor kid was there for so long she probably doesn't even know it.
"I-I don't have one. They only called me a number."
"Well, my name is Helena and those two are Ingrid and Leon. Leon looks scary but he's a big teddy bear."
The girl laughed, looking up and shocking Helena. Helena's brown eyes met the girls' burgundy ones. Helena frowned again, wondering how she was possibly going to be able to stay hidden when her eye color isn't naturally occurring.
"Can I name myself?"
"Of course. Helena and Leon are going to be looking after you for awhile so pick a name that you like." Hunnigan says, finally speaking up.
"Aliya. That was the name of the doctor at the old place that I really liked before she left."
"Well, I think that's a beautiful name." Helena says, smiling warmly at the girl.
"Thanks. Your name is pretty too."
Ingrid cleared her throat, "Well I need to speak with both of them, but they will be back later tonight to collect you."
Helena got up and went over to them as the doctor approached again to take Aliya's vitals. Helena didn't notice that Leon was looking at her in awe at how quickly she had calmed the kid down.
"Okay, I'll stay here and brief—Aliya. You two go and grab essentials from your places." Hunnigan says, handing Helena the mission briefing.
Helena and Leon nodded and did what they were told, heading to the parking garage, and getting into Leon's car. The two usually carpooled since they often went on assignments together and it made sense to them both. Helena finally took out the briefing that Hunnigan handed her and read it out loud:
"Agents Harper and Kennedy,
Your assignment is protection detail for this child. Over the coming months, you two are going to act as her parental figures. You need to make it look as believable as possible to avoid any suspicion. This includes but is not limited to attending parent teacher conferences, birthday parties, chaperoning field trips, helping with homework, et cetera. Under no circumstances is she to leave your sights apart from school. If at any point you have reason to believe this mission is compromised, let me know IMMEDIATELY!
One last thing:
Protect this little girl at all costs."
"Well, this mission is going to be interesting." Leon says as he briefly looked over when she finished reading.
"Well, consider this as an opportunity to get to know each other better. I'm assuming you can't see Ada at all during this though. Sorry about that."
Leon tensed as he heard Ada's name, also detecting a hint of jealousy in Helena's tone.
"Harper, are you jealous?" He asks, smirking at her.
"What? No! Absolutely not."
Leon chuckled, "then why did you bring her up?"
"I'm just trying to make conversation with a friend that's all."
"Well, I know I can't see her, but I don't care about that."
Helena looked at him curiously, "Oh? Why not?"
"Me and Ada are done."
