The next two weeks flew by for Aliya. She made a few more friends while at school, courtesy of Trevor, and she even made an enemy. Logan. He still pulled her hair every single day and even shoved her a few times, but she tried her best to ignore it.
Helena and Leon had also seemed to grow closer. So close that she almost believed that they were married, laughing, and joking around with one another. She may have only been twelve, but she could tell in the way they both acted that they wished it was real.
Aliya woke up for school one day with the worst stomachache of her life. She felt as though a knife was being stabbed into her and slowly pulled back out again. The twelve-year-old rolled out of bed, clutching her stomach. Aliya ran to the bathroom and started emptying the contents of her stomach into the toilet. Once she had finished, she finally looked down at her lap and screamed.
Helena and Leon had been sitting at the kitchen table with coffee when they heard her scream and immediately grabbed their guns, fearing the worst. The two went to the bathroom, hearing Aliya throwing up again.
"Aliya, are you okay?" Helena asks, putting her gun away and knocking on the bathroom door.
"Go away! I'm dying!"
Leon looked at Helena, wondering why the girl thought she was dying. Helena shrugged, looking around until she peered into Aliya's room and saw blood on the fitted sheet, putting two and two together.
"Leon, go downstairs and see if you can get some breakfast for her. I've got this."
Leon nodded, still as confused as ever, but didn't ask questions. Helena went to their master bathroom and looked through the cabinets. She had gone to the store the week before to get tampons for herself because she knew that she was due soon but had a hunch that Aliya would have also started soon since she had been increasingly moody over the past week.
Helena grabbed a pad and returned to the bathroom.
"Aliya, it's Helena. Can I come in?"
Helena waited for a minute until Aliya unlocked the door, allowing her to come in.
"What's going on with me?" Aliya asks softly from where she sat on the ground next to the toilet.
Helena frowned, most kids knew about things like periods, sex, and the like from their parents or health class. Aliya had learned none of this.
"Well, I can assure you that you aren't dying. It's something that happens every month, it's called a period. I have one, you have one now, every woman gets one, it just means that you're growing up."
"Okay why do I have to get one though? Like what's the point of it?"
Helena sighed, "well, it means that you can get pregnant now." She says, going on to explain things like sex and consent since she didn't exactly trust the public school system to teach those things.
"Okay so I get it, and it means that I'm not pregnant and I just have to deal with bleeding and pain for three to seven days. However, I don't get it and it means that I'm most likely pregnant and then must raise a kid for eighteen years?"
"Well, you have to have sex for the risk of pregnancy, but yeah pretty much."
Aliya groaned, "that's so fucking dumb."
"Hey, language." Helena says, trying not to laugh at Aliya's reaction.
"Okay when does it stop for good though?"
Helena shrugged, "Around the age of fifty."
"So that's…thirty-eight more years I have to deal with this?"
Helena chuckled, offering the pad to her, "unfortunately. This is a pad, you put it in your underwear sticky side down and you change it every few hours. When you need more, they're under the sink in our bathroom."
"Do I have to go to school today?"
Helena sighed, "I guess not, but no opening the door for anyone and you're sure you're okay on your own for a few hours? I just need to grab some things from the office and go to the store."
"Yeah, I'll be fine."
"Okay then you can stay home."
Aliya smiled faintly, thanking Helena as she got up and went to leave the bathroom to give her some privacy.
Helena went downstairs where Leon had put some cereal and orange juice on the table for Aliya and Leon looked up when she came back into the kitchen.
"Is everything okay?"
"Oh yeah, she's uhm just got her first period is all. Poor thing thought she was dying so I had to reassure her that what she's going through is normal."
Leon nodded, "well at least she's alright."
"Yeah, I told her she didn't have to go to school today. She understands not to open the door to anyone and that she'll be fine for a few hours."
"Alright, let's get going then."
Aliya spent most of her morning in bed, only going downstairs to eat the breakfast that Leon had left out for her. She had been trying to sleep away the pain but failed. Leon and Helena texted her every so often to make sure that she had been alright, which she appreciated.
Aliya perked up when she heard a knock on the front door and she raced down the stairs, looking out the peep hole to see the person on the other side. She wasn't going to open the door until the person on the other end had told her that she was a friend of Leon's and, forgetting all rules, Aliya opened it.
Helena was now driving back from the store and HQ. Leon had been sucked into meetings about their assignment all day and he wouldn't be home until late. Helena pulled into the driveway, not seeing anything unusual until she saw the door was unlocked.
Huh. I swear we locked it when we left.
Helena hesitantly made her way inside.
Inside, standing in the kitchen with Aliya, was none other than Ada.
