The week went by painfully slowly for the three of them. Aliya still wouldn't speak to Leon, although she had no problem talking to Helena and then being quiet and glaring at him as soon as he came into the room. Leon had been trying to make things right between the two of them but to no avail; Aliya didn't want to hear it. Helena hated seeing the two constantly tiptoeing around each other, but her hands were tied about the situation.
Aliya got up from the table that Friday night and went up to her bedroom just as she had been doing for the last week. All she had to do was wait until the two went to bed and then she would sneak out the back and meet Trevor to go to his cousin's party. There was something in Aliya's gut that told her not to go to this party since she had become progressively sicker, but she shrugged it off and listened to music while waiting.
Aliya had been so distracted by her music that she hadn't heard Leon knock and enter and when she did, she took the remote and turned the stereo off and gave him a look.
"What do you want?"
Leon flinched at her tone, nothing but pure hostility in the tweens voice as she crossed her arms and glared at him. She just sat there waiting for him to speak.
"Look I'm sorry about everything that happened with Trevor and his dad. I do regret killing his father and you're not going to understand why I did it until you are much older, I don't understand you to get it right now. Just know that I'll do anything to get the job done, especially if it means keeping you and Helena safe." He explains, going to sit on the edge of the bed.
"Uh, okay? You said all this already."
Leon sighed, "how about we go out one day? Just you and me. We can do whatever and buy you whatever you want."
Aliya raised an eyebrow, "uh, okay? Sure."
"Alright, we will plan something soon."
Aliya nodded, watching as Leon finally got up and left, closing her bedroom door behind him. Aliya got up, listening closely until she saw the lights in the hall turn off and heard Helena and Leon's bedroom door close.
The girl waited a while longer until she was certain that the two agents were in bed and got changed out of her pajamas into some jeans and a T-shirt. Aliya slowly opened her door and began to tiptoe down the stairs, going to the drawer in the kitchen to grab her phone that Helena had taken away since she had another week before she wasn't grounded anymore. The good thing about the nighttime was the fact that no agents were camping out in front of the house seeing as there was no need when both Leon and Helena were home. Aliya snuck out the backdoor and went to wear Trevor was waiting by a hole in the fence in the yard.
"Hey, do they suspect anything?" he asks quietly as he saw her through the pitch-black darkness.
"Nah, they went right to bed tonight," she says, playing with the boards in the fence until she found the weak point and moved the board to the side, the two kids sneaking through it, "so where does this cousin live?"
"He's only about a twenty-minute walk from here actually."
"Oh, cool," she says as the two walked, sticking to the back yards of the neighbors until Aliya was certain that no one she knew was going to see them. She knew that she would be in a world of trouble if Helena and Leon caught her at any point of this evening.
"So, what's this cousin of yours like?"
"He's cool, other than you he came to check on me after dad died."
Aliya looked at her feet, "did they happen to say how your dad died?"
Trevor shrugged, "not really. They only said something that there was a security breach, and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time," he explains, his voice cracking as he talked about it, "the funeral was yesterday, and I don't know how me and my mom held it together."
"Well, you can always talk to me about it. I may not understand completely but I would be just as upset if it was my dad and I'm sorry."
Trevor shrugged, "why are you sorry? It's not your fault."
No, but it was because of me.
Aliya was about to speak again when she felt overwhelming nausea and went to throw up in the nearest bush.
"Woah are you okay? Maybe you should go back home if you're sick." Trevor says, looking at his friend with concern.
"Oh no I'm okay, it's nothing contagious."
Trevor didn't believe her but didn't say anything as the two continued to walk until they reached his cousin's house. Trevor opened the door where they were greeted by loud music and strobe lights, everyone was in costumes to celebrate the holiday.
"Hey little cuz! Who's your friend?" A boy with blonde hair just like Trevor's asks, taking off his clown mask to reveal blue eyes the same as his and a tanner complexion.
"Hey. This is my friend Aliya. Aliya, this is Jacob, my cousin."
"Hi, nice to meet you." Aliya says, suddenly feeling shy at all the older teens around.
"Well where are your costumes?"
Trevor shrugged, "Sorry. When your dad dies you don't exactly have time to shop around."
"Yeah, and my parents don't know I'm here so," she says, rubbing the back of her neck as she felt lightheaded.
"Ah so you're a rebel. I like you." Jacob says, giving her a warm smile as he led the two over to the drink station, grabbing them both a couple cans of soda.
"Yeah, that's kind of why we're friends."
"Well, enjoy yourselves and just let me know when you leave."
Trevor nodded as he and Aliya maneuvered through the crowd, taking care not to bump into anyone as they walked. Aliya felt nervous, unsure of how she felt being around all these older teens and the music and strobe lights were making her senses go haywire. Trevor excused himself to go to the bathroom and Aliya went to sit on the brown leather sofa with her drink.
"Hey what's someone like you doing here?"
Aliya looked over to see another older boy with dark hair and a paler complexion, not looking much taller than Jacob. He was dressed in a long black lobe and sat next to her, too close for her liking as he rested his arm on the back of the couch behind her.
"Oh, I'm here with Trevor. Jacob is his cousin," she says nervously, trying to ignore the pounding migraine that was beginning to form.
"Well, it's nice to meet you. I'm Michael."
"Aliya," she introduces herself, feeling considerably worse. Michael moved closer to her, and Aliya gagged at the strong smell of alcohol in his breath. If she'd have known there'd be drinking, she wouldn't have agreed to come.
Michael moved closer to her and put an arm around her shoulders, which she slapped away. She felt her skin crawl as the older boy touched her and she got up to go to the bathroom, only for him to pull her back down and forcing her to sit on his lap, wrapping his arms around her.
"Let me go!" She snaps, struggling against his grip.
"Where are you going? I'm just trying to have some fun!" Michael says, tightening his grip on her. Jacob saw what was happening from where he was talking with another friend and immediately rushed over.
"Hey man let her go you're scaring her!"
Michael didn't listen until Aliya bit down on his arm, hard. This caused Michael to scream and let out a string of profanities as he let her go, allowing her to rush to the bathroom as the dizziness got worse.
Meanwhile, Leon had woken up in the night to grab himself some water and went down the hall to check on Aliya on his way down, turning her bedroom light on. Leon's heart nearly stopped when he saw that Aliya's bed hadn't been slept in at all and Aliya was nowhere to be found.
Leon tried not to panic, not wanting to wake Helena just yet and cause any alarm. He knew that had someone broken in and taken Aliya, that he and Helena would have woken up before they even had a chance to reach her. Leon went downstairs, the stairs creaking with each step. He hoped that Aliya just couldn't sleep and had decided to fall asleep on the couch.
Aliya wasn't there either.
Leon was about to wake up Helena and call Hunnigan when his phone rang, and he breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that it was Aliya on the other end. Oh, she was in a world of trouble when she got home.
"Aliya? Where the hell are you?"
"Dad," she starts, staying in character in case anyone heard her, "I need you to come get me and I don't want you to ask any questions, okay?" she asks weakly, barely able to speak at this point.
"Is everything okay?" he asks, his anger dissipating as he heard the distress in her tone.
"I think I need that serum. I'm getting bad."
"Okay, share your location with me and I'll be right over," he says, hanging up the phone and grabbing his keys and jacket.
Aliya sent Leon her location, stumbling out of the bathroom afterwards. She needed to get out of there, especially before Michael found her again, seeing as she kind of made him angry earlier. Aliya didn't bother to find Trevor and tell him that she was leaving and stumbled out of the house, beginning to walk towards her own.
The twelve-year-old barely made it a mile before she collapsed to her knees and started vomiting in the grass, the migraine becoming worse. Her heart was beating a mile a minute, she could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. Aliya had become so distraught that she hadn't noticed Leon's car pull up beside her.
Leon got out of his car and rushed to Aliya's side, taking his jacket off and wrapping it around her shoulders.
"Hey, it's okay, I'm here," he says, helping her up and beginning to lead her over to his car.
Aliya barely made it when she again and everything went black.
