Jonathan Hart couldn't believe his luck. He'd been lucky a lot in his life, and those lucky breaks had landed him millions of dollars and a thriving company. But nothing compared to the luck of meeting Jennifer Edwards.
Oh sure, he'd been pissed off at her deception to try and wrangle a story out of him, but they'd cleared that up. And he had quickly seen that the Louise Tobin he had been falling in love with that night was really just Jennifer Edwards by another name. She was exactly who she'd presented herself to be. Beautiful, whip smart, great sense of humor, and endlessly interesting. In spite of everything they'd gone through, he only wanted more of her. Now and forever.
And here they were, riding around Hyde Park in a horse-drawn carriage driven by Max. A silly romantic whim he'd arranged at the last second along with the banners on Tower Bridge, but he was glad for it. Jennfier had agreed to marry him, and now they could revel in it.
"Come here, I want a picture of us," Jennifer said, pulling out her phone.
"Max can take a picture of us later," he protested. Jonathan didn't really like having his picture taken. He didn't really like the constant fixation people had with their phones and taking pictures of everything and experiencing life through the screen of an iPhone instead of with their own two eyes. He didn't want Jennifer to be like all the rest when it came to that.
But Jennifer would not relent. "Max is busy driving the carriage. Just smile for two seconds and pretend like you're happy," she instructed.
"I don't need to pretend," Jonathan told her, his tone low and serious.
Jennifer turned her face to look directly at him. "Well, I'm glad of that." She put her phone's front camera on and held it up. "Smile, darling."
At the last second, Jonathan turned his head to kiss Jennifer's cheek. She started laughing in delight and snapped a few pictures.
"Oh that was great, thank you," she gushed, looking through the photos.
Jonathan saw that she was right. The pictures were lovely. "You look as happy as I feel," he noted.
"Well, I feel as happy as I look. But I will get a nice picture of your face one of these days, Jonathan Hart. You can't escape me," Jennifer threatened teasingly.
"I don't plan on it," he replied. "I guess I'm just not used to all that kind of stuff."
"What, taking selfies?"
"Yeah, that."
Jennifer furrowed her brow at him. "How curious," she commented.
"Is it?"
"Well, we're not too far apart in age but you're so opposed to social media. Most people with success like yours can't live without it. Usually not by choice, actually. It's a necessity of modern life. But you've always been so elusive, and you've achieved success and notoriety without it. I guess I thought that was just a conscious choice on your part to maintain privacy and credibility or whatever. I didn't realize you're just against it like this," she mused.
Jonathan hadn't really thought about it like that. "I guess I am. I've avoided it because I didn't really see the point. It's a part of the world I just haven't had much interest in and I guess I don't know why anyone would."
Jennifer chuckled, "I think you can stay off Twitter and TikTok, but I'm going to see if I can get you on Instagram. It might be fun. See, look at this."
He watched as she opened the app on her phone and tapped a few things in quick succession. The photo of Jennifer beaming with joy and Jonathan kissing her cheek came up. She put a couple filters on it to make the background a little hazy and romantic.
"Hashtag love at first sight," Jennifer said aloud as she typed. "And I'll just leave it like that. But I am going to send this to my father first because he'll be furious if he finds out I put it on Instagram before telling him. Give me two seconds."
Jonathan didn't like the sound of that at all. He didn't know much about her family at all. Not yet, at least. But he still had a nervous feeling in his gut that he had asked Jennifer to marry him before her family had even met him. It was Jennifer's choice, of course, and he would never deign to think her father had any ownership over Jennifer or her choices. But it all felt a little surreptitious now. Jonathan had no family to introduce Jennifer to, except for Max. But to get engaged before knowing her family might have been a mistake.
"There," she announced. Jennifer held the phone for Jonathan to see what she'd written. This is Jonathan Hart. Google him, you'll be very interested, I'm sure. We've fallen madly in love and he asked me to marry him and I said yes. I want you to meet him, of course, and I want to tell you the whole story. We can FaceTime later. Let me know when you're free.
Well, that was certainly to the point. "You'll have to let me know when he responds," Jonathan said.
"I will," Jennifer assured him. She put her phone back into her pocket and resettled herself in the carriage. "Now then, where were we?"
"Enjoying a carriage ride," Jonathan reminded her.
"Yes, but…" she trailed off as a very sexy smirk came over her lips. "Ah, I remember."
Jennifer draped her arms around his neck and leaned in to kiss him. Jonathan eagerly responded.
