Save The Last One: Part 2 of 2

RV

Dale was on lookout atop the RV. He had traded shifts with Wu a few hours back. He was a bit on edge because a few compys had wandered into their "base camp" earlier and stole a bit of food. Wu managed to cut one on the tail before it ran off. Carol climbed on top of the RV with Dale.

"Can't sleep?" he asked her.

"I'm gonna wait for them to come back. You can go down and sleep if you want to," she said.

"No, we can keep watch together. Besides, I just took over for Wu," Dale said in a calming voice.

"Which way did they go?" Carol asked.

"That way, towards the clearing. It's also where the compsognathus came out of earlier," Dale said pointing in the direction where the group went.

"I hope they come back soon," Carol said.

"Me too..Me too," Dale looked off in the distance with a concerned look on his face.

Forest

Andrea and Darryl were walking through the woods when they heard a rustling and few small chirps. They came to a campsite with a tattered looking tent, and found a walker hanging from a tree. When they came closer it was revealed that two dilos had been eating the dangling legs. They ran away startled at the site of the two humans. Andrea winced at the gruesome site. There was a note attached to the tree and Darryl read it aloud.

"'Got bit, fever hit, world gone to shit, might as well quit.' Dumbass didn't know enough to shoot himself in the head. Turned himself into a big swinging piece of bait, and a mess," Andrea nearly vomited.

"You all right?" Daryl asked.

"Trying not to puke," she said.

"Go ahead if you gotta,"

"No I'm fine, can we just talk about something else for a minute? Where'd you learn to shoot?" She asked.

"Gotta eat. That's one thing these walkers and us have in common. Dinosaurs too," Daryl said,

"I guess it's the closest he's been to food since he turned. Looks like the other geeks and Dinos have been chewing the flesh off his legs. Damn compys," Andrea vomited at this statement.

"I thought we were changing the subject," she said wiping the vomit off her mouth.

"Call that payback for laughing about my itchy ass," Darryl said.

"Let's head back," he said.

"Aren't you gonna.. Finish it off?" Andrea asked.

"No, he ain't hurting nobody. Ain't gonna waste an arrow either. He made his choice. He opted out," Darryl said. Andrea walked toward the Walker with a sad look on her face.

"You wanna live now, or not?" He asked her. Andrea shot him a look.

"It's just a question," she just looked at the walker.

"An answer for an arrow," she said. Darryl nodded.

"I don't know if I wanna live, or if I have to, or if it's just a habit," she said.

"Not much of an answer," Darryl said. He lined up his crossbow and plunged an arrow into the headed of the hanging walker.

"Waste of an arrow," he said. The two then continued and headed back to the highway.

RV

Dale and Carol were still on top of the RV. Dale was on edge the whole time Andrea had been gone. Carol noticed this.

"You don't need to worry. She's with Daryl. If something happens he can protect her. You hear what I'm saying?" She tried reassuring him.

"Sorry, All I heard was if something happens," he said. Dale paused for a moment before speaking again.

"You mind keeping watch?" he asked her as he handed Carol the rifle.

"I don't know how to use that," she said, referring to the rifle.

"I won't be gone long. If you see anything, call out, or get Wu. I'm not going far. One of us is bound to hear you if you do see something," Dale then got up and walked away as Carol watched him venture off.

Hershel's Farm

Billy was helping Patricia stitch up T-Dog's cut.

"You got here just in time. This couldn't go untreated much longer," she said to T-Dog. Billy was starting to space out, thinking that maybe he should start looking for Dr. Grant and the others. Patricia interrupted his thoughts.

"You watchin' me Billy? You might need to know how to do this someday," she said. Billy returned to focusing on T-Dog.

"Yes Ma'am. Sorry," he said. Billy noticed the bag of meds on the table next to T-Dog. Glenn walked in the room sipping a cup of tea watching T-Dog get stitched up.

"Who's Merle Dixon? He a friend that gave you these meds?" Billy asked.

"Merle's no longer with us. Daryl gave us those—his brother," Glenn explained.

"Not sure I'd call him a friend," T said as he winced at the pain from the stitches.

"He is today. This Doxycycline might have just saved your life," Patricia said as she continued to stitch T up.

"The clap," Glenn said bluntly. Maggie gave a disgusted look.

"Um Venereal Disease... That's what Daryl said," Glenn explain looking as if he might puke.

"Sound's like this guy's clap is the best thing to ever happen to you," Billy chuckled.

"I'm really tryin' not to think about that," T said as we winced even more. Glenn walked out of the room and went outside to pray and him and Maggie had a conversation about God, and even got to know each other a bit more. (I felt this scene wouldn't really add much to this chapter so I decided to skip it) After Jacob and Zach had had some food prepared by Maggie, Jacob and Zach went outside as well(Glenn had gone back in). Suddenly, Zach heard a small chirping sound. Jacob immediately recognized it as a compy. He got out his knife and sure enough, resting near the edge of the porch was a lone compy. As Jacob was about to kill it, Zach stopped him.

"Wait! it looks hurt!" Zach said. Jacob stepped back as Zach went to look at it closer.

"Don't touch it Zach!" Jacob said, but Zach ignored him and examined the small creature. Sure enough, the compy's tail looked like it had been bitten off.

"Hey there little guy. What happened to your tail?" he asked the small dinosaur. The compy squeaked weakly back at him. Zach noticed that the compy was bleeding pretty badly where part of it's tail had once been. Wasting no time, he tore a thick piece of cloth off of his shirt, and wrapped it around the compy's tail to stop the bleeding. Jacob just looked on in awe as his brother cared for the small animal.

"I think it's working. he might need a little more cloth to stop the bleeding. Here," Jacob said, as he tore off a piece of his own clothing and gave it to Zach.

"Really?" Zach looked up at his brother smiling. Jacob nodded and Zach took the cloth and wrapped it around the compy's tail, the bleeding just about stopping, tying it on gently with a small piece of rope. The small dinosaur feeling a bit better stood up slowly. Jacob was cautious, but Zach smiled at it. Suddenly the compy brushed up against Zach playfully and almost purring. Zach petted it, and it squeaked cheerfully. Jacob chuckled at this.

"I think he likes you Zach," Jacob said.

"Me too, haha!" Zach Laughed. When he laughed, the compy squeaked again.

"Hey, I think I'll call you squeakers!" Zach said as the compy sat in his lap. Jacob laughed at this.

"Can I keep him?" Zach asked his brother. Jacob pondered this for a moment.

"Well, he seems kind of harmless. I guess if he stays outside you can keep him Zach," Jacob said. Zach cheered and squeakers squeaked happily.

Back inside

Rick and Lori were in the bedroom with Carl.

"Before it happened, we were standing there in the woods, and this, dinosaur, with a crest on its head just crossed right in front of us. Parasaur, I think Billy called it. I swear, it just planted itself there, and looked Carl right in the eye. And I looked at Carl, looking at it, and that Parasaur looking right back at Carl, and that moment just...slipped away...It just slipped away. That's what he was talking about when he woke up, not about getting shot, or what happened at the church. He talked about something beautiful, something living," as Rick said all this, Lori could feel the tears swelling up inside her. Rick continued.

"There's still a life for us; A place maybe like this. It isn't all death and monsters out there, it can't be. We just have to be strong enough after everything we've seen to still believe that," Lori started sobbing as she held on to Rick's hand. Rick continued again.

"Why is better for Carl to Live even in this world? He talked about the Parasaur, Lori. Not about the dead, or—or the meat eating dinosaurs; he talked about the Parasaur," Lori's tears seemed to stop, as if she had had a wake up call.

School

Shane and Otis were running/limping down what appeared to be a long corridor or driveway. Suddenly, Shane tripped, dragging both himself, and Otis down with him. Otis was holding onto Rick's gun.

"Gotta get back to the street, Double back to the truck," Otis explained.

"Look, we ain't gonna make it ok?" Shane said.

"We gotta try! Come on get up," Otis said out of breath. Shane wouldn't listen to him.

"You're gonna take these bags, and you're gonna go," he said to him taking off his bags.

"I ain't leaving you behind," Otis said. Shane realized that he couldn't get through to Otis, so he slammed his fist on the ground in defeat, and Otis helped him up. Soon after, they could hear the moans of the walkers, as well as the screeching of the raptors behind them.

"How many rounds you got left?" Shane asked him.

"Four," he replied. "You?"

"Five, and one in the pipe," Shane said. The walkers and raptors were closing in on them fast. To make matters worse, the raptors had nearly pushed through to the front of the cluster of walkers.

"Come on, we gotta get, once those raptors get through, we gonna have to do more than limp," Shane said. They both fired into the cluster, and hit a few walkers. Shane narrowly missed a raptor, as it pushed through to the front of the group and started to charge Shane. Just when Shane thought it was all over, Otis popped one right in its foreleg, causing it to stumble and trip. The raptor retreated back into the woods, while one of them, as well as the walkers, were still chasing after them.

Back at the farm, Rick and Lori had made the painful, and risky decision to have Hershel operate on Carl without the use of a respirator. Hershel brought in his medical instruments and Patricia and Billy were helping him out.

"Okay, get the corner of that bed, lets get the sheets down," Hershel instructed.

"I'm on it," Billy said.

"Get the I.V. bag in the sheet," he told Rick. They then prepared to lift Carl up.

"Okay, on three: One, Two, Three," with the help of Rick, Patricia and Billy, they all lifted Carl on to a makeshift surgical table. As Hershel, Billy and Patricia prepared to operate on Carl, Rick and Lori both had looks of despair on their faces.

"Rick, Lori, You may want to step out," Hershel said, noticing the looks on their faces. Suddenly, as they were speaking, they heard the sound of a truck pulling in. It was Shane! He had returned with all the medical supplies. As he stepped out of the truck, Everyone came outside to meet him.

"Carl?" Shane asked out of breath.

"There's still a chance," Rick said. Hershel looked around for Otis, but didn't see him.

"Otis?" he asked worriedly. Shane just shook his head sadly. Maggie was at loss for words.

"We say nothing to Patricia. Not till after. I need her. Billy, you too," Hershel said, sounding frustrated as he went back inside. Shane was at a loss for words. Rick simply embraced him with tears in his eyes. Shane had an almost guilty look on his face.

"They kept blocking us at every turn. We had nothing left. We were down to ten rounds, and I dropped the dart gun Billy gave me. Then he said—he said he'd cover me. And that I should keep going. So thats what I did. I just... I kept going but I—I looked back and he... the raptors, they were all over him man... walkers too. I—I tried," Shane said, tearing up. Rick put his hand on Shane's shoulder.

"He wanted to make it right," Rick said. Maggie was crying as Lori comforted her.

"Well, now that we have what we need for Carl, he won't die in vain. He did make it right," Jacob said, looking down slightly.

RV

Dale and Carol were on top of the RV again, when suddenly, they both noticed flashlights shining out of the woods, and Dale smiled as he recognized them as Daryl and Andrea. He went down to greet them.

"Andrea, wait," he said.

"What do you want Dale?" she asked.

"To give you this," he said, as he pulled out Andrea's gun.

"I care about you. So I made a choice for you-choices. I know why I did it, but this is not my gun, And the choices that I made for you, were not mine to make," he said. Andrea took her gun back.

"But I can still ask, and this is not to make you guilty or put me ahead of you, but I can still ask, please, don't make me regret this," he said to Andrea. Andrea looked away for a moment.

"I'll take watch," She said.

"So do you forgive me for— Do you forgive me?" Dale asked. Andrea had a somewhat sad look in her eyes.

"I'm trying," she said. Then she walked away somewhat sadly and went on watch.

Hershel's Farm

Everyone was still torn over the loss of Otis.

"I've known Otis since I was a kid. He's run this farm since before my mother died," Maggie cried. The only other person in the room was Glenn.

"Who else? Who'd you loose?" he asked. Maggie just cried and looked at him.

"You told me I had to make it okay somehow. That's what you've been trying to do right? Which ones?" He asked looking at the pictures on the fridge. Maggie got up to show him the pictures. She pointed to a few of the pictures telling Glenn who they were.

"Stepmother," she said, pointing to a pretty looking woman.

"Stepbrother," she said pointing to a picture with a cheerful looking young man in a farmer's outfit. Maggie looked at the pictures and continued to cry.

Outside everyone was waiting for news on Carl. Hershel, Maggie, Glenn, Patricia and Billy all came outside.

"He seems to have stabilized," Hershel said wiping his hands off. Everyone had looks of relief on their faces. Hershel smiled at Rick, and Rick embraced him.

"I don't have words," Lori said crying.

"I don't either. Wish I did. How do I tell Patricia about Otis?" Hershel said. Everyone was silent until Rick spoke up.

"You go to Carl," he said to Lori. "I'll go with Hershel,"

"I will too. This is gonna be devastating for her to hear," Billy said. Lori nodded and everyone went inside. As Lori went inside, she saw Patricia sobbing, and nearly falling to the ground. Billy and Rick helped her up. Shane noticed this, and walked away guiltily. Lori was kneeling by the bed where carl was, sobbing and caressing his forehead. Shane came in and looked at Carl and Lori looked back at him.

"Stay," she said to him. He nodded and looked at Carl before leaving the room. Maggie walked up to Shane in the hallway and handed him some clothes.

"Bathroom's upstairs," she said.

"I brought you some clothes,"

"Thank you," Shane said.

"They won't fit well. They were Otis's," she said before walking away sadly. Shane had look of shock and guilt on his face when she said this. He went upstairs and got ready to take a shower. As he takes his shirt off, a large claw mark from a raptor can be seen on his back. He looks at himself in the mirror, covered in bruises and bumps. As he turns around to look at the claw mark on his back, he notices a great deal of hair missing from his head.

Flashback

"How many rounds you got left?" Shane's voice asks.

"Four. You?" Otis's voice asks.

"Five, and one in the pipe," Shane's voice says. In Shane's Flashback, Otis and Shane can be seen trying to get away from the walkers and Raptors.

"Come on!" Shane says. He can hear the walkers and lone raptor getting closer. They kept firing shots into the crowd of walkers. They were almost out of ammo. (scene reverts back to Shane in the bathroom. Shane is frantically looking for something in the bathroom, when he finds a razor to shave his hair).

Shane and Otis are still running/limping as fast as they can away from the flesh eating beasts.

"Down to my last," Otis says.

"Me too," said Shane. Suddenly, Shane stops walking, as he realizes that he won't make it back with Otis slowing him down. This causes Otis to stop as well.

"I'm sorry," he said. Otis just looks at him curiously. When all of a sudden Shane shoots him in the leg. He cries in pain as he falls to the ground. He tries to take the bag off of Otis as he's on the ground, but he won't move.

"Will you give it—Ah!" as Shane struggles to get the bag off, the raptor in the group claws Shane in the back, ripping his shirt. Shane kicks the raptor off of him and instead of it attacking Shane again, it goes after Otis. This gives Shane a chance to grab the bags, but as he stands up Otis grabs on to Shane's hair. He soon lets go after Shane punches him a few times, and when Otis feels a sharp pain in his side, he notices that the raptor had plunged its claw into his abdomen. His entrails were on the ground in front of him. Seeing this as a distraction, Shane grabs Rick's gun from Otis's hand as well as picking up the other bags, and makes a run for it, loosing some hair in the process. As soon as he runs, the walkers are already on top of Otis. More screeching can be heard as the Alpha Raptor as well as two others, run out of the woods and pounce on Otis. As Shane walks away, he can hear Otis's screams as he's being devoured by raptors and walkers.

End Flashback

Shane has nearly finished shaving off all of his hair. He looks at himself in the mirror, with a look of anger, and hatred...
