[The Quarry, South of Atlanta]
Bella pulled up behind the truck Glenn was driving and came to a stop. Rick was quiet since they left Atlanta. It was hard for him. She understood that losing family hurt, but she left him in his silence. She didn't know how to even comfort him anyways. She was just worried about next steps. She hoped that there wasn't going to be an issue here. "Alright. We don't know these people. So, don't let your guard down." She said and Jake nodded and so did Rick. She got out of the Highlander and drug her crossbow with her, Glenn hopped down out of the truck ahead of them and others from the camp started gathering.
"What the fuck Glenn are you bringing strays in now?" A man asked. He had dark hair and dark eyes. He was taller than Bella and it was clear he was strong by how muscular his arms were. He was wearing a white tank top and khaki cargo pants and boots.
Bella raised a brow. "Nice to meet you too."
"Shane?" Rick was shocked to see his old partner from the force standing in front of him.
Shane's eyes went wide as he swung his attention from Bella to Rick. He was in shock, seeing his friend and partner. Suddenly the two men were embracing each other.
Glenn was surprised too. "Small world." He said and smiled.
"Rick!" A woman's voice stammered a little as it called out to him.
Rick peeled himself away from Shane and he looked at the woman. Her hair was long and dark, and her eyes were equally as dark. Rick was rushing towards her, tears rolling down his face as he scooped her up in his arms and hugged her tight.
Bella smiled a little. A rare occasion for herself. "I'll be damned."
Shane looked at Bella. "What?"
"We went to Atlanta looking for his wife and son. Oh no…"She frowned and looked at Shane. "Did-"
"Dad!" A boy called and was running over towards Rick and the woman.
Bella felt herself relax and she smiled. "Good."
Shane studied Bella. She was shorter than him by a foot and she had dark hair braided down her back. Her blue-green eyes were unusual. She seemed strong. She was wearing a white tank top and army pants and he saw the silver glint of what he figured were dog tags. "How'd you find Rick?"
"He found us. We were squatting in a house in his old neighborhood. He woke up from his coma and that was the first place he came to. He wanted to check Atlanta before we moved out away from here for something more permanent." Bella explained. "I'm Bella Swan by the way."
"Shane Walsh." He said and extended his hand.
Bella grasped Shane's hand in hers and shook it. "So you and Rick. Police together?"
Shane nodded. "Yeah. Partners actually. You? Dog tags. Army?"
Bella nodded. "Yeah. Army medic." She said and then Jake joined her. "This is Jake Black." She said introducing Jake.
Jake shook Shane's hand. "Nice to meet you man."
Shane nodded to Jake and then looked around. "So, we've been here from the start. The Quarry is isolated. We have a good source of fresh water. The camper is Dale's he's trying to fix some radios for us so we can have contact when we have people away, like today." He explained.
Bella nodded and looked around the camp. "Any defenses?"
"Some. We started stringing cans up around the camp as an alarm system. Our hunter guts and cleans what he finds away from the camp so we don't draw in unwanted wildlife, but also, the biters. They smell blood too, doesn't matter if it's human." Shane explained. He started walking and Bella followed as he introduced her and Jake to the others at the camp. He was still trying to get his mind wrapped around the fact that his best friend was still alive. It was a miracle that he was alive and standing right now.
Bella nodded and shook many hands as Shane introduced her and Jake to the group. She felt a little bit better. These people really weren't bad. There were children, four of them and that was something that she could stay to protect. She had a soft spot for children and that was all she needed as a reason to stay here. "Well, do you mind if Jake and I, if we stay and help. I'm glad to be another hunter. I'm a medic I know how to fix people. Surgery too. I was a surgeon before I enlisted." She explained and looked up at Shane.
Shane seemed to be impressed with her. "Of course. You brought Rick back to us. I am grateful for that."
Bella smiled a little. "Well, he wasn't a bad guy. He needed help and so." She shrugged. "There aren't too many good people left in this world anymore. Jake and I, we've met some pretty rough people." She said and Jake nodded.
"Well, like I said, we're pretty isolated out here."
"The dead haven't been a problem?" Bella asked.
Shane shook his head. "Nah, not really. If we find a few stragglers, we take them out before they can cause any damage."
Bella looked at Jake and he nodded. "Alright. Well, we have our own tents and supplies. My highlander is loaded down with supplies. If you guys need any of it you-"
Shane cut her off. "That's nice of you. But… we don't want to take your stuff. That's not the kind of people we are." In his mind he knew the supplies would be needed and that he would take the supplies anyways.
"I know." Bella smiled again. "But, if we're going to survive together. We should look out for one another right?"
Shane smiled. He was charming and he wasn't terrible to look at either. Right now he was flirting with Bella. He liked her. She seemed like a decent person. "We should." He said, his tone dropping a little, flirty.
Jake rolled his eyes. He was used to guys acting like this with Bella. He cleared his throat. "I'm gonna go get our tent Bells." He said and walked away, towards the Highlander.
Bella smiled and looked up at Shane. "Well, Officer Walsh, I'm happy to help with whatever you need." She flirted back. She was a woman. She had needs just like men did. She was thirty years old and was not shy.
Shane's smile widened a little. "Well, if you want, we can take a tour of the alarm system. It's not too far from camp, but it's… secluded."
Bella understood what he was saying and she smiled and nodded a little. "Sure. I'd like to see this alarm system." She said and she followed him. He wasn't wrong. It wasn't far from the camp. They made it to a section where there were a few trees bunched together, giving some seclusion. Shane turned, his hands moving to her waist, his rough hands brushing her skin as he backed her against a tree. His mouth covered hers, kissing her and she kissed him back. They unfastened each other's pants then he was pushing inside her fast and hard against the tree. The bark of the tree bit into her ass, but she didn't mind it as Shane fucked her fast. It was the small pleasures that Bella admitted were needed in a world like this. Jake was like her brother, so she would never dream of ever doing something like this with him. Bella felt her orgasm on the rise and when she came, she moaned against Shane's mouth which was his signal that she had finished and so he went faster, pushing himself towards his own climax. When he felt his cock swell, he pulled out and came, his seed shooting against the tree between her legs.
They took a moment to pull their pants back on. Bella smiled a little as she straightened herself. She looked around the woods. "Hmm. This is rather exposed back here." She said, putting her back to Shane.
Shane fished fastening his belt and then he moved towards her, his hand slipping to her hip. "Well, what's your suggestion?"
"The cans are a good alarm system, but there needs to be more of them. I was thinking some sort of spike wall. The dead would impale themselves and they'll get stuck. Do you do rounds or watches?"
Shane nodded. "We do."
"Good. Then those on watch can make their round, check the wall." Bella said and turned and looked at Shane. "So?"
Shane smiled and leaned in and kissed her. "Hmm. Sounds like a lot of work. But. Worth it to keep everyone safe."
Bella was glad that Shane seemed to be sensible. "Alright. I'll start working on that. I have a task so I will get it done." She said and then patted his cheek. "This was fun." She said and then she walked off back towards the camp.
Shane smiled and shook his head and followed her back to camp.
Rick was happy to be reunited with his wife and son. "Bella! There you are." He called to her, gathering her attention.
Bella walked over. "Hey."
"This is my wife Lori and my son Carl." Rick introduced.
Bella smiled and held a hand out to shake Lori's but Lori ignored it and just hugged Bella. Bella hugged Lori back. "What's that for?"
"For saving my husband's life." Lori breathed and then leaned back. "Thank you."
Bella nodded. "Of course. I was glad he was able to reunite with you and your son." She said and looked at Carl. He looked to be about twelve or so. "You're not so small. I pictured a smaller kid."
Carl chuckled a little. "I'm thirteen ma'am."
"Oof, showing your age Sheriff." Bella teased.
Rick smiled a bright smile. "Yeah, I'm not that old." He ruffled Carl's hair. "So, how's Shane?"
Bella raised a brow. "Well, he's Shane." She nodded. "He's-"
"Already hitting on Bella." Jake said as he walked up. "I got the tent set up by the RV and next to Glenn's tent." He announced. "I'm Jake by the way." He introduced himself to Lori and Carl.
Lori smiled, but it didn't quite meet her eyes. Shane was flirting with Bella which that didn't really sit well with her, but she hid it. "Nice to meet you Jake."
Bella rolled her eyes at Jake's statement. "I can handle Shane." She said when she noticed Rick frowned. "I want to take a look at the quarry. The woods has some blind spots that need addressing, but I talked to Shane about that and we got a plan."
"Plan?" Rick asked.
"Yeah, we're going to put up some more alarm systems, a spike wall to take out biters if they move in too close. Establish some patrols and check those walls." Bella explained.
Rick nodded. "Makes sense." He crossed his arms. "Do you think that putting in that effort should be set aside so we can think about a permanent solution?" he was thinking about having stability. Not camping in tents in the woods.
Bella had already thought about that. She wanted everyone to stay safe. There were children here and she knew that Georgia weather could get violent sometimes so it would be smarter to find a permanent shelter. "Yeah. Finding a permanent spot is ideal. But it's what we have for the moment. I was hoping to get back on the road in a few days."
Rick nodded his agreement. "I agree. A few days at most but we should head to the more reclused spots "
"We can make room in the Highlander later. I have some stuff I can part with for others in the camp."
"You're talking about leaving camp?" Lori shook her head. "We can't leave."
Rick put a hand on Loris back. "Honey, we can't camp in tents forever. We need solid walls. The Quarry will have some hard rains here and a the winds. The weather is unpredictable."
Bella saw the panicked look on Lori's face, so she nodded. "Well, we can probably make it a few more weeks here, but really Ms. Grimes, we need to think about permanence." She said, agreeing with Rick. That was the ultimate goal. To get somewhere, where they could defend easier against the dead and other people. This world wasn't kind, and she didn't want to keep reminding people of that, especially since she just met most of these people.
Shane walked over, sensing a little tension. "What's going on?"
"They're talking about leaving Shane." Lori blurted out, clearly distressed.
Shane frowned, his hands perched on his hips. He looked at Rick. "Rick?"
Rick sighed. "It's not safe Shane. I get you have been camped here since the start of this thing… but the tents… in the woods next to the Quarry?" He shook his head. "It's risky."
"We've made it this far. We're reclused here. We barely get biters here." Shane put in.
Bella heard a beeping sound and the realization hit her that it was the satellite phone in her Highlander they were standing close to. "Oh shit." She said and rushed towards the SUV and she pulled open the door and reached inside and grabbed the satellite phone. "Hello?"
"Bella?"
"JASPER!" Bella exclaimed. "Where are you?"
"Atlanta. It's fucked over here."
"I was just there. Are you trapped?"
"Sort of." Jasper was panting a little. "Your number was the only one I memorized. I was thinking I'd get a voicemail darlin' but hell, I got you. You're alive and kicking in this shithole."
"I'm coming to get you. Get up high. Get safe." Bella said quickly.
"Nope. Don't you dare."
"Major. I'm coming to get you. That is a fucking order damnit." Bella cursed.
There was a brief silence. "I'm heading to the roof of the mall."
"I know where you're at. I'll be there. Don't you fucking move."
"Gonna try not to." Jasper said and she heard some clanking of doors shutting and other voices.
"Who is with you?" Bella asked as she whistled over to Jake.
Jake trotted over. Rick and Shane were standing by the SUV now, listening to what was going on.
"Corporal Lahote, my brother Peter and his wife Charlotte. Charlotte is sick we don't know what's wrong. She's not bit."
"I'm coming to get you. Jasper."
"Yes darling."
"I fucking missed you."
"Likewise." Jasper said and the phone beeped, indicated low battery. " I'll see you when you touch down."
Bella blew out a breath and ended the call. "Jake, we're moving now. We have to head back into Atlanta."
"That's suicide." Shane said, frowning still.
"Don't have a choice."
Jake was frowning too. "What's going on?"
"Jasper is hunkered down at the mall and so is Paul."
"Are you serious?" Jake was shocked right now. "We have to go."
Rick put a hand up. "I'll go with. We're going to need the people to get in and out. That mall was crawling when we left."
"No! You can't leave! I just got you back!" Lori exclaimed, upset that Rick was willing to jump to helping rescue some random people form the mall in Atlanta.
Rick looked at Lori. "I'm not letting them go at it alone."
"Wait. I'll go." Shane said and right then another man walked up. He was carrying rabbits and had an older crossbow. His hair was darker, shaggy, touching his shoulders and he has a small goatee, and his eyes were a grey-blue color. "You're back."
"I am and I saw a new vehicle. Thought maybe it was scouted, but there's more people."
Bella nodded. "I'm Bella, this is Jake, that's Rick."
"Rick is Lori's husband and Carl's dad." Shane explained.
"Daryl." The man introduced. His grey-blue eyes swept over Bella, taking her in. She looked strong. She was beautiful to say the least. The way the sun hit her blue-green eyes made them sparkle somewhat.
Bella just gave him a nod and then she looked back at Shane. "I can't ask you to come with us. You're right, this is suicide. These are my people, Shane. It's my duty to get them back." She said, her tone even.
Shane studied her for a moment. "You brought Rick back and helped get our people out of Atlanta."
Daryl shouldered his crossbow a little. "I'll go. Whatever it is I'll go. You should stay here." He said to Shane.
Bella shook her head. "Listen, I have four people I have haul back. I need the room in the SUV. Jake and I can get in and out."
"It's dangerous with just the two of you." Rick reasoned.
Bella didn't know Shane that well and she just met Daryl and they were both trying to help her. It was the opposite of what she was used to before when everything started happening. She nodded. "Fine. Play rock, paper, scissors or whatever, but only one of you can come with. I don't have the room otherwise." She said and then walked around to the back and opened the trunk and pulled out two crossbows. "Daryl." She called and he turned and looked at her and she tossed him a crossbow. "Your crossbow is dated." She said and then she handed one to Jake. She shuffled some things around in the back of the trunk while Rick and Shane argued over who was going with. Lori was still stressed looking and not looking happy that both Rick and Shane were willing to walk into the line of fire for Bella, whom she had only just met. When she was done sorting, she walked back over to the three men. "So?"
Daryl nodded. "I'm going with. I know we just met but Rick said you helped get my crazy brother down off the roof. Anyone who doesn't shoot him first and ask questions later, is worth it in my book." He said.
"Alright then. Let's move."
