Hello everyone. I am so, so, sorry that I didn't update this story for months. I got carried away with two other stories and I focused on those because they were easier to do and I faced a reader's block for this story. Also over the months, an idea came for GOTG 3 and then click I got an idea for this story, Thora 4 and GOTG 3. And now here is the next chapter and I've changed this story into a crossover story between Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers because...spoiler alert: there will be elements from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies in this story. Hope you enjoy the chapter.
Unforgiveness
It was dark and cold on planet Earth. The remaining Avengers and remaining Guardians sat silently in the building, doing nothing. Tina and Rocket had grieved for days for Meredith and Groot. They prayed the rest of their team and family were still alive. It had been very strange for Tina to be on Earth for such a long time since she was abducted more than 30 years ago when she and Peter were kids. And to be here right on the planet, she lost her mother made her heart clench.
Una and Valkyrie had tried to contact the Asgardian survivors far out in space but they hadn't had any luck so far. They considered contacting Wakanda for help but Shurak, Ramonda and Erik were too overcome with grief for the deaths of T'Lilla and Nakia. No one could say anything. Jesse above all had been so distant. His father had died in the Snap. And so did his closest friends Darcy and Ian. He wouldn't talk to anyone. Only Una. He became an alcoholic drinking every day till he was hung over and lying down, draining away his sorrows, dreaming of his beloved Thora who had perished, trying to stop Thanos and his goal.
"You think Fandrall's alive?" Una asked Valkyrie, not sharing eye contact with her.
"We can only hope," said Valkyrie simply. She raised her solemn head at her friend.
"I can't believe she's gone. My entire family is gone now," she sniffled. "If Fandrall…" Una's head fell into her hand and she began crying. Valkyrie pulled her into a warm hug, comforting her, shedding tears of her own too.
Seconds later, the entire building was shaking. And a bright glow sparked outside. The two Guardians walked to the windows and saw two glowing figures guiding a ship to land. Their hearts leapt for joy. They dashed outside, Captain America, who had shaved his face, Rhodes, Black Widow and Pepper Potts shooting behind them. They dashed into the dark and saw the ship slowly landing on the tall grass. Colin and Wendy approached them.
"Is it them?" Tina asked. Colin and Wendy didn't say anything. She became pale. The stairs lowered down and everyone watched as Nebula helped a limping Tony down the steps. Captain America came over to help him.
"I lost the kid," he mourned. "I lost the kid,". Steve knew who he was talking about.
Tina and Rocket waited intently. But then Orlins came bounding down the stairs and right into her arms. "Oh, buddy I've missed you so much,". Her Guntrin purred into her face, licking her wet cheeks. Rocket hugged him and Tina stood up again heaving slow audible stepping on the metal ladders again.
Peter appeared into view, his head hung, avoiding eye content. When Tina saw him, she threw her arms around his body but he didn't respond. "Oh, Peter…" she cupped his cheek. "What happened?". Her brother was speechless. All she saw were wet eyes.
Nebula approached them and she turned to her, desperate for answers. "I'm sorry,". It was at that moment that Tina realised that Gamora, Drax and Mantis had perished as well in this fight. "No," she shook her head, her eyes wetting up in seconds. "No,"
"I'm…sorry," choked Peter. She burst into tears, crying into his shoulder. Orlins and Rocket grieved as well and Nebula closed her eyes too. Peter's arms slowly wrapped around her but his heart was now crushing with heartbreak and horror. The Avengers held sympathy for the remaining Guardians who had lost many of their loved ones in this fight. Tina above all was the most heartbroken. She loved Mantis. And now she would never get a chance to tell him she did. And it made her twin all the guiltier than ever too. Nebula promised him she'd keep his mistake a secret for now.
Tony was tended to. Peter was offered refreshments but he barely ate anything. The day came by and everyone stood around a consul emitting holographic projections.
"It's been twenty-three days since Thanos came to Earth," Rhodes reminded grimly as pictures of all their friends and allies who had died appeared on the screen, bringing tears to their eyes.
"World governments are in pieces," Natasha choked on her words. "The parts that are still working are trying to take a census and it looks like he did…he did exactly what he said he was gonna do,"
Colin and Wendy's hearts dropped at seeing Nick Fury, their uncle Joel and cousins Monica and Josie appear on the screen. Colin held his twin close. Their entire family was gone and they wanted nothing more than to kill the warlord who had killed them.
"He was gonna wipe about 50% of all living creatures,". The heroes felt down. They had failed.
From a distance, Jesse saw Thora's picture and his heart clenched. He pulled out the ring box and opened it. He was going to propose to her and now he would never get the chance. He dropped the ring box into a bin.
From behind a wall, in a chair, Peter became more and more consumed with guilt. If it wasn't for him messing up the plan, Thanos wouldn't have succeeded and all those people would have been alive. Jesse would have proposed to Thora and they'd be married.
"Where is he now?" asked Tony.
"We don't know," said a glum Steve, folding his arms. "He just opened a portal and walked through,"
"That's it?" he asked. "That's all you got?"
"We've been tracking him for weeks," said Tina. "Deep space scans, satellites….nothing,"
"Needle, haystack," Rocket remarked.
"Tony, you fought him," acknowledged Steve.
"No. He wiped my face with a planet while the Bleecker Street magician gave away the stone. There was no fight, cause he's not beatable,"
"Did he give you any clues, any coordinates, anything?"
Tony just stood up, shaking. He had had a lot to drink last night. "I've nothing for you, Cap. I've got no clues, no strategies, no options,"
"Cap, you need to sit down," Steve tried to get him to sit down and so did Rhodes but Tony wouldn't. He just kept on speaking without thinking. "We were close. This close…" As he hissed, he held his index finger close to his thumb. "…to getting his gauntlet off of him. But then…" he lost words but a feeble finger was pointed at Peter much to the confusion of his sister and racoon.
"Please no," Peter begged, unable for her twin and Rocket to hear it. But already they suspected something.
"Okay. You need a lie-down," Valkyrie pointed at him. "You're drunk and you're letting her guilt get to you. This is what happened to me. Now you need to lie down,". Tony tried to speak but he collapsed and instantly he was escorted to a medical room by Rhodes and Pepper.
"What was he trying to say?" Tina demanded.
"Teen…" Steve did not want a fight to break out. In a time of grief, this was not acceptable but the woman didn't look like she was backing out of it.
"What did you do?!" Tina demanded, marching on her brother.
"Tina, there's no need for this," Una tried to calm her down, knowing anger was not the way of reason. From the other side of the room, Jesse raised his head, sensing something amidst.
"You all have a right to know," Peter spoke up. He realised he couldn't hide it. "I've done something terrible. Something I regret. And…if I could go back in time I would undo what I did,". He was silent for a second. All eyes were laid on him. "I let Thanos win," he confessed. Everyone eyed him intently. Nebula hung her head, knowing this was not going to end well. "I learnt he killed Gamora, the woman I loved,". Gamora's sister shut her eyes remembering her. "I lost control and I screwed up the plan. He got away because of me. It's my fault he succeeded in his goal,"
Slap! The men winced. "How could you let this happen?!" the outraged twin roared, holding more anger to the ashamed twin than the killer of trillions.
"Okay Let's just calm down," Bruce tried to sooth her but she wouldn't listen.
Peter winced from her slap to his cheek. "I'm so sorry," he tried to apologise.
"You're sorry?!" the colour red painted her face like fire. She was no longer filled with grief but rage and resentment. "You killed half of all life and that's all you can say?"
"Please. I'm sorry," he begged. "I didn't mean for this to happen,
"But it did!" roared Rocket, his eyes stuffed with hatred like Tina's. "We had to watch Meredith and Groot dissolve right in front of her eyes! Because of you!"
"Racoon enough," Nebula tried to break it up.
"Trillions of people are now dead because of you!" Tina pointed an accusing finger at her brother, appalling everyone else. They were equally outraged at Peter for unintentionally allowing Thanos to succeed in his goal but right now Tina was taking it too far without considering everything else.
"Tina, enough," Una tried to break it up.
"I'm so sorry," Peter breathed out, hoarsely. "Please," he begged for her forgiveness.
"Too late! Everyone else would be here right now if it weren't for you and your stupid emotions!" bellowed Tina. Peter was struck. She didn't care at all about the love he had held for Gamora and how losing her was something he couldn't walk away from. "You've jeopardized everything! And now everyone we love is gone, because of you!" she pushed him back, trying to punch him but Una pushed her back.
"Just stop it," the Asgardian ranted. "What's done is done! It's not his fault! Not entirely!"
"Why should I?" she roared. "We both lost people we loved because of him!" she pointed at Peter who remained frozen by her yells, unable to defend himself.
"He lost Gamora," reminded Nebula, her voice broken for her sister. "He's lost people as well. You're not the only one who's suffering,"
"I don't care!" she shouted, shocking everyone, even Orlins that she would rant like this about her brother, the only blood relative she had left. "The only thing I care about is that half the universe is dead and Thanos has won," she glared darkly at her twin. "I will never forgive you for this,".
Peter tried to apologise again but she stormed off, shoving past him. Rocket followed behind her growling at him. Peter just stayed where he was, heartbroken by their resentment towards him. He had let them down. But nothing was more heart-breaking than the fact that his twin didn't care about the fact that like her, he too had lost the person he had loved in this war. He felt disowned. Nebula came over and placed a hand on his shoulder. Una did too. Even they thought she had gone too far. Orlins didn't glower at him but he left without saying a word or sending a glimpse. He was giving him the cold shoulder again which made him feel even more rejected.
"Just give her time to cool off," Una tried to comfort Peter. "She'll get over it,"
"No," he shook his head. "She's right about me. It's all my fault. Everything's all my fault,"
"You didn't force Thanos to give the Strange the stone," the sister of his deceased lover reminded him. "The wizard guy said so himself, there was only one path to success,"
"I don't care," Peter shook his head, not even caring that Tony had revealed his screw-up to Tina as he wanted her to know but didn't know how to tell her himself. "All I care about is I've let my entire team down. And the worst part is the only family I have left will never forgive me or talk to me again. They're right to reject me," he glanced at everyone. He eyed Colin and Wendy whose eyes were filled with bitter hatred. They had lost nearly their entire family because of him. "I'm so sorry," he sobbed out. "For everything,".
He then turned and left the room in an instant unable to face anyone. Nebula and Una were the only girls who looked out for him with sympathy. As he passed by Jesse, he saw a sober man with dark eyes of unforgiveness. He had taken Thora away from him, just like he had taken Mantis from Tina and Meredith from Rocket. There was nothing he could do to make up for that.
Tony in his room with his loved ones heard footsteps and saw a rejected Peter marching past the window. He became guilty for getting drunk and revealing what had happened. He had completely forgotten how he had sympathised with Peter for losing the woman he loved and now it seemed he had only made things worse.
On the far side of the compound, in a small empty room, Peter locked himself inside, slouched on a bed and just sat there silently until hours of grief and heartbreak sent him to sleep. And all he could see in his head was the image of his beautiful Gamora who he now missed more than ever.
It was morning the next day. Tina leaned against a window, venting heatedly, her rage burning more for her brother than for Thanos. Tears of anger flooded her eyes but they didn't spill out. The door opened slowly. She wouldn't turn.
"Go away," she seethed.
"I'm not your brother if that's what you're implying," It was Nebula. She walked slowly up to her. She spoke neither a word nor moved a muscle. "You shouldn't be so hard on him,"
"Why shouldn't I?"
"It was my fault for telling him that Thanos brought Gamora to Vormir for the Soul Stone and that's what led to him screwing up the plan. You can't hold him entirely responsible,"
"Because of him…half the universe is dead! Because of him, our team is gone! And I didn't even get a chance to tell Mantis how I felt for him!" her voice broke and her tears spilt. Behind the doors, Peter's heart couldn't stop trembling to the temp of every heated word, his unforgiving sister was roaring out. "He allowed his stupid emotions to get the better of him and it has cost us everything!" He couldn't help but agree with her. He thought by morning he'd be able to talk to her again but nothing had changed at all. He couldn't take it anymore. He had never felt more ashamed than ever of disapproving of Mantis and Tina's affection for each other. He walked away slowly through the halls, his head hung low.
He instantly went to the kitchen, looking for something to drink but was stopped by a loud growl. "You think drinking's gonna change anything?" It was Rocket, tweaking his gun. He wasn't looking at Peter but the latter could tell by his stiff posture how much he hated him now. "It ain't gonna make you less guilty,"
"Rocket please…" Peter begged, unable to bear it anymore.
"Don't please me,' Rocket's voice was becoming more dangerous. "You know before I met you guys…I had no one in my life. I had people taken from me. And it happened the same way. I trusted a friend just like Tina and I trusted you. That friend got my first love Lylla killed. And now you've taken Meredith from me," he growled making Peter's eyes wet thinking of her.
Peter approached him. "I'm sorry Rocket. I didn't mean for this to happen. I just…"
"Get out!" he roared ruthlessly into his face, his hands on the trigger. Peter instantly turned his head and left without another word, leaving Rocket to growl in anger. He retreated outside to the grass, fell to his knees, and unclipped his mother's watch holding it to his lips. "Oh mum…I'm so sorry,". He felt he had left her down terribly. He felt he had let everybody down. And most importantly he had the only surviving members of his team down.
Colin and Wendy dressed up in their suits again were marching through the halls. Steve walked out of his room and Natasha exited hers. "Where are you two going?" he asked.
"To kill Thanos," Colin declared, not looking back at them.
"Don't try and stop us," said Wendy.
"It may not be your territory but it's our fight too," Steve declared.
The siblings turned to them. Bruce and Rhodey appeared as well. "With those stones, you two are gonna need all the help you can get," Bruce declared.
"Do you even know where he might be?" Rhodey asked.
"We know people who might," said Colin.
"We'll send messages to every corner of the universe and in less than a week, we'll get some intel," Wendy planned.
"Don't bother," spooked a voice. It was Nebula. "I know where he is,". They gathered around the table again, Tina and Rocket, who had cleaned his claws joined them. Jesse was there too but kept a distance as before. Una and Valkyrie weren't there with them. Tina suspected they were with Peter but didn't care about it at all. "Thanos spent a long time trying to perfect me. And when he worked, he talked about his Great Plan. Even disassembled, I wanted to please him. I'd ask 'Where would we go once his plan was complete? And his answer was always the same," she leaned on the table. "'To the Garden'"
"That's cute," remarked Rhodey sarcastically. "Thanos has a retirement plan,"
"Who cares? We need to find him," Tina said impatiently, desperate for justice.
"So where do we find him?" asked Steve.
An image of Earth appeared. "When Thanos used the stone fingers, Earth became ground zero for a power surge of ridiculously cosmic proportions," explained Rocket. As he enlightened, a holographic force of image spread from earth, supporting his lecture. "No one's ever seen anything like it,"
"So, the only way to find him is if something like that happens again," said Bruce.
"We picked up the exact same signals of this power surge that happened two days ago," Nebula made the image switch to another planet which emitted the same energetical surges. "Thanos is there,"
"So, we go in. Beat him. Get the stones. Use them to bring everyone back," declared Colin.
"We'd be going in short-handed," warned Bruce.
"You'll have us this time," Wendy reminded.
"So just like that we just do a snap with the stones and bring everyone back?"
"Yeah. Just like that," approved Steve.
"Even if there's a small chance that we can undo this…" spoke up Natasha. "I mean we owe it to everyone who's not in this room to try,"
"If we do this, how do we know it's gonna end any differently than it did before?" Bruce asked, becoming worried about longer-term consequences.
"Because you have us," Wendy said, exchanging positive glances with her brother.
"Not to be rude or anything," spoke up Rhodes. "But where exactly were you two and your parents this whole time? I mean if Nick knew your parents why didn't he just contact them before?"
"Earth is not the only planet that needs protection. There are many other planets out there that don't have Avengers like you guys," Colin reminded. "But now we can work together to get that gauntlet and undo everything. There's no time to waste,"
"Then what are we waiting for?" Tina asked, desperate to bring Mantis back as much as Rocket was to bring Meredith back. The ship was being prepared. The Guardians and Avengers prepared their weapons too. Whatever lay in wait for them, they had to be prepared.
"I hope this works," Colin hoped. "If it means getting our family back,"
"It will," prayed Wendy.
"What are you thinking about?"
"If maybe we had been here to help them. We could have stopped Thanos. Our family…" she was beginning to break into tears.
"We couldn't have known," Colin's voice was broken but he was doing his best to sound strong. "But we have to be strong. It's what Mum and Dad always taught us to do,". She pursed her lips and nodded.
Orlins had sharpened his claws but when he looked from his person's shoulder, Tina felt his claws dig a bit into her skin. "He's coming this way,"
Tina and Rocket turned slightly and they saw Peter walking towards them with Valkyrie and Una. When Peter's eyes laid on them, they turned away at once. The women comforted him. They comforted him with pats on the back. Whilst Nebula had explained Thanos's location, they had been with him, doing all they could to give him the comfort and care that neither Tina nor Rocket and even Orlins held for him.
"You ready?" Steve asked them.
Before either of the girls could answer, Tina interrupted. "He's not coming,"
Peter refused to go. "I refuse to go. We're supposed to…" But Tina marched right into his face. i
"You're staying here!" she shouted in his face.
"I'm going! And you can't stop me!" Peter tried to walk past her but she aimed her left Quadblaster at his face.
"Woah. Woah," Bruce tried to calm her down.
"Enough of this," Una spat at her. "Let him come with us. It's his fight too,"
"Why? So, he can screw up everything again? Like he always does?"
Peter was wounded by her words. "You really think I intended this to happen?"
"Just go!" she shouted. "GO!"
"It's better if he stays here," Colin agreed. "Before he lets his emotions get in the way of things again,". He completely agreed with the other Guardians that Peter was not eligible for the mission.
"That is enough. We're on the same side," Steve refused to allow any conflict to arise between them.
"He screwed up the plan to get Thanos's gauntlet. He's just gonna screw it up again," Wendy pointed at him.
"At least he has feelings which is much more than you lot have!" defended Valkyrie knowing full well exactly what Peter had gone through. "Especially you three who are supposed to understand him," she accused his twin, Rocket, and Orlins. The superpowered cosmic heroes felt offended like she was accusing them of having no humanity compared to Peter. And the Guardians were offended too like none of them cared how much it had broken their hearts losing their families.
Before any arguments could arise, Peter spoke up first. "I'll stay," he accepted humbly.
"No," Una refused to see him drawn back by their words.
"It's for the best," he turned around and walked off. The guardians didn't look out for him; they just got back to getting ready.
Neither Una nor Valkyrie could take it anymore. "I know your brother made a mistake…" Valkyrie tried to sound calm but once again the red-faced twin interrupted.
"It wasn't just any mistake," she was close to losing he temper. "It was a mistake that cost the entire universe half of all life. Now we have more important things to do. Getting the stones. And bringing everyone back. Without him!" she turned and marched up onto the ship, Rocket, and Orlins behind her.
Everyone who didn't fully blame Peter remained stunned by her words. Though all were still angry at Peter for his actions, they couldn't entirely hold him responsible for Thanos's victory.
"I'll stay behind with him," Valkyrie volunteered, unclipping her scabbard. "Someone needs to look after Jesse anyway and keep him from attacking Peter,"
"We'll be back soon," Una swore. "Once we bring everyone back, we can patch things up,"
"It's what Gamora would have wanted," Nebula acknowledged. She turned her head but Tina, Rocket and Orlins had already boarded the jet; she sighed, wondering if things could ever be fixed between them and Peter. Once everyone was on board. The ship's engines activated and whoosh! The jet shot off into the sky with the super-cosmic siblings behind them.
Oh no. Tina, Rocket, Orlins, Colin and Wendy entirely blame Peter for the deaths of everyone. And only Una and Valkyrie seem to sympathise with him the most. Oh dear. What will happen when they return later with no chance of bringing everyone back? We'll have to wait and find out. Hope you all enjoyed it. And I promise you all that the next chapter will come either this weekend or next week. You all have my word and I promise you all I won't slack off Marvel stories for a good long while. See you all sooner than before. Please send reviews and let me know what you all think.
