Shadow was taken from his cell. He was confused as to why he was being called to the head office. He wasn't due for release for about a week or two. So, he didn't know what was going on. But something in his gut told him it wasn't very good.
Going inside, and looking around as he went and sat down in front of the desk in front of him. "Hello Shadow." The warden said. "I've asked for you to come here to give you some bad news." The warden gave Shadow a look of pity. This really wasn't good news.
He knew it.
"We are going to be releasing you early today. I'm sorry to tell you this but.." The warden cleared his throat. "Your wife was in a crash and died on the scene last night. I'm very sorry Shadow." He said. But Shadow wasn't listening anymore as his words sunk in.
His wife was gone.
His nightmare last night was about Laura trying to run from a light before she was consumed by it and he was unable to save her.
It was as if someone was telling him that he lost his wife.
He shook his head and stood wanting to go back to his cell and wake up from this nightmare. Laura couldn't be dead. She promised to wait for him. They have a family to start. He loves her. She was his other half.
His reason of being!
He was told that his in-laws were coming to take him to home. But when they got him, he asked them if they could take him to a hotel. They understood why they asked him. He wasn't fully ready to go to the hotel that he shared with their daughter.
When they got to him, they hugged him and the three cried together. "She was doing so good. She had been getting everything ready for you to come home. She stayed by the phone waiting for you to call." Her mother told him.
He was happy to hear her words, but it made his heartbreak even worse. They took Shadow to a hotel with some supplies and clothes. They told him that the funeral was going to be the next day.
The last time he was going to see his wife in person will be at her funeral. To top it off it turned out that Robbie was the driver and had died as well. He didn't know if maybe they were still sleeping together. Laura told him she wouldn't. So, he had to trust her word.
Shadow sat in the tub of his hotel. It was only for tonight, but he thought that he would pack things up and leave that house. He didn't think that he could live there without Laura anymore. He's sure that her family will understand and assist him in that.
He looked at the ring that laid cold on the tub. Her rings were given to him as well. It was given to him with a chain. Something to keep with him.
But he hasn't put his ring on. He had dreamed of having it back, but now he was a widow. He wasn't married anymore.
He closed his eyes for a moment before cleaning up, and getting into bed. He wasn't even hungry. He just wanted this all to end.
He closed his eyes and only opened them when he heard his name being called by a familiar soft voice. Sitting up, his eyes widened seeing Laura's frame walking in. Holding a child's hand. "Laura?" He asked breathlessly. "Go get Daddy." Laura said as she walked into his sight. A child who looked like a mini Laura but with mixed skin came and hugged him giggling. "You were having a nightmare." Laura told him.
Shadow was frozen. This was something he wanted. A family with the love of his life. Laura.
"But... you're dead..." He said, his eyes tearing up. "Who said I died puppy?" She asked him with that cute head tilt of hers.
That was when Shadow gasped awake. He looked around him and he felt tears fall from his eyes. It really was just a dream. And the fact that Laura was dead and gone was real. It was something he had to come to terms with.
He looked around and saw that it was morning. He needed to get ready for the funeral. He just didn't want to believe it still.
