It was Saturday afternoon and Talia was playing Charming's music hall with her bandmates and four other groups. They were the headline and closing acts and got the most applause and cheers from the audience. They all came to the center of the stage to take a bow and Bobby was sidestage clapping for them too. He led them off the stage and they made their way to the exit, but were stopped by fans wanting signatures or pictures with the cover band.
"Talia, that girl's here again." Dylan pointed out after they finished taking pictures with a foursome of girls.
"Gotta be more specific, Dibs. We have a pretty impressive amount of groupies."
"The chick with the really light blonde hair."
"Wait, Beanie Babe's here?" Ethan asked. "That girl's been coming to every show we've had for two months now. She's hot."
"Really hot." Josh chimed. "Tal, if you don't go ask for her number, I'm going to."
"It's obvious where her attention is. What makes you think you've gotta chance with her?"
"I'm a guitarist, finger skills." He wiggled his fingers at Ethan.
"Those finger skills don't make up for your tiny dick and whack-ass stroke game." Talia teased the boy, making Ethan laugh.
"You don't have a stroke game at all."
"Darlin', my stroke game could put a porn-star to shame and drive your mama insane."
"Prove it, go get her number."
"Challenge accepted, dickhead." She shoved Josh out of her way and went searing for the pale-haired girl wearing a burgundy beanie.
"Hey, gorgeous." She smiled at the girl, hugging her. "Oh, I'm sorry. You look a lot like my next girlfriend."
"Okay, that was smooth."
"Smooth enough to earn your name and number?" Still smiling, Talia pulled out a Sharpie marker from her back pocket- because for some strange reason that she will never understand, Ethan always sticks markers in her pockets at rehearsals 'for safekeeping' like that was a normal thing to do- and held it out to the girl.
The girl looked like she was either thinking of a way to turn Talia down or she was trying to think of something cute to say. Tal lessened the tension by wiggling the marker in hopes that things would be swayed in her favor, then the girl laughed and everything changed.
Talia didn't know what the hell happened. It was like time stopped or something, felt like they were the only two people in the room, and she was watching the girl in slow motion, savoring every second. It seemed like the only thing that mattered was that laugh and Talia had to figure out what she did to deserve it.
Talia was taking the prolonged moment to try and notice everything she could about the girl. They were just about the same height, but the girl still seemed a quarter of an inch shorter than Talia. Under her burgundy beanie, her light hair fell just under her chest in the front, but she couldn't be considered a blonde because her locks were too pale. Her hair was the same color as a glass of milk. Her eyes were hard to find a single color for. One minute, they looked cobalt-blue and the next, it seemed like they were shifting to shamrock-green, so Talia settled on cerulean for now. The girl had a gorgeous smile, the kind you wanted to see all day, and to top it off, Talia spotted a pair of dimples forming on her cheeks. She wasn't one to notice details like that from someone she just wanted to fuck, but the girl had the cutest button nose and heart-shaped lips. She seemed so perfect, almost too good to be real.
"...so soon." The girl's words brought Talia back to the present and the blonde was signing her hand like she asked. "But I hope you guys are performing at the Sweetheart's Festival. I'd really like to see you again."
The girl was giving Talia the marker back, but her hold on her hand lingered for a second before she turned to leave. She looked over her shoulder at Talia, a parting glance, then she was lost in the crowd. 'Why did it feel like none of that just happened, that those gorgeous blue eyes weren't real?' Talia thought. Looking down at her hand, she saw a name scribbled on her palm with a phone number.
"So, what happened?" Josh questioned as they caught up with her, watching as the girl got lost in the crowds while Talia was staring after her. "Is she hopelessly in love with you yet?"
"Does she have a sister?" Ethan asked.
"What's her name?" Dylan inquired.
Talia looked down at her hand and read the name scribbled on it. "Hayleigh...and she's perfect. I gotta see her again, so we're playing the Sweetheart's Festival."
"I thought you were against that. 'If you're good at something, don't do it for free' and all." Ethan argued.
"Plus, you're kinda anti-Valentine's Day." Josh added. "You love 'em and leave 'em, but without the love part. You lust them and leave them heartbroken."
"I changed my mind, we're playing."
"But-"
"We're playing the stupid fucking goddamnit festival, alright? Jesus."
