Phyllis arrived back at Nonnatus House and had a word with Sister Ursula about Baby Chen and the result of the ridiculous time limit on home visits. Now that the weight of that conversation was off her shoulders she went in search of Sister Julienne. She knew she needed to tell Sister Julienne about Mrs. Turner. However she could not find her, first Sister Monica Joan had been disappearing and now Sister Julienne. She decided she would change and make sure she was downstairs for when Sister Julienne turned up.
A few hours later after dinner at Nonnatus House and a conversation between Sister Julienne and Sister Ursula, Phyllis was finally able to catch Sister Julienne alone.
"Sister Julienne, may I have a word with you?" Phyllis asked as she stopped the nun in the hallway.
"Of course Nurse Crane." She responded with her customary calmness.
"I was called to the maternity home today. Originally I was to take Mrs. Turner to St. Cuthberts but once I arrived Dr. Turner insisted on taking her there himself and I stayed with the inspector. Mrs. Turner had some bleeding. I hadn't heard from them again when I left earlier this evening but I assume the hospital admitted her." Nurse Crane reported as calmly as she could when telling someone about a difficult situation. She watched as Sister Julienne's face fell, the calm in her eyes vanished and was replaced by a storminess that Phyllis had never seen there.
"Have the children been told?" She asked firmly.
"I don't think so. I called Mrs. Penny to tell her and she said she could keep Angela for the night but Timothy must not have been home yet when I called." Phyllis replied.
"If you will excuse me Nurse Crane, I will go there now to inform him myself." Sister Julienne said quickly before turning to leaving the house.
On her bike ride to the Turner's flat she prayed. She had been praying for this miracle for the Turner family for so long, she couldn't fathom it slipping away now. Her heart broke for her poor Shelagh. She realized the need for a family is what had propelled her former sister from her religious vows and she could see her service to God continued even from her new role. As she arrived at the Turner flat and got off her bike she wiped the tears she hadn't noticed falling from her cheeks and took one more deep breath before knocking on the door.
"Sister Julienne!" Timothy exclaimed upon opening the door for her. "Please come in. Maybe you can tell me where everyone is. While I appreciate the quite to finish my homework it is strange to not have heard from someone by now." Tim rambled as he led her inside and to the table where his maths book and notes lay. They both sat down at the table.
"Timothy, your father had to take your mother to the hospital today. She was bleeding. I assume she will be staying in the hospital but I don't know how she is or when your father will return. Angela is with Mrs. Penny right now, but if you want we can pick her up. I don't know more than that." Sister Julienne said before gently grabbing his hands in hers.
"The baby..." Tim whispered.
"I don't know Tim." She said as she shook her head. Dampness gathered in both their eyes and she pulled him in for a hug. They both let the tears fall as the hug continued. She rubbed his back in a soothing motion she has used on many patients before, but never one that had hit this close to home. After a few moments they both pulled away and dried their eyes.
"How about we go pick up Angela and get you both some fish and chips? We can leave a note in case your father returns while we are gone." Sister Julienne said, her calm demeanor returning as she placed herself in charge of the situation. He nodded at her and got up to write a note by the phone before they headed out together to fetch his sister.
A few hours later Sister Julienne sat in one of the golden chairs in the den after putting a confused Angela to bed. Timothy was in bed as well but she knew he wasn't yet asleep, his mind was probably as tormented as hers. She knew Shelagh must be worrying for not just the child she carried that was in trouble but also for Timothy and Angela. She would make sure that they were safe, at least until Dr. Turner arrived home. She held her wooden cross in both hands and continued her prayers for Shelagh, the baby, and the Turner family. A short while later she was still consumed by her prayers when the front door opened. She quickly finished her pray with a "May the Lord sustain and help them" before she got up as he entered the den. Patrick looked tired and worn out, but he did not look surprised to see her there.
"Angela is upstairs asleep. Tim is up in bed but I doubt he is asleep. I told him the little Nurse Crane passed on to me. How is she?" Sister Julienne said in a rush.
"She is okay for now. The bleeding was bad but it stopped. We can't know for certain if the baby is alive and the doctor says she may still spontaneously abort." Tears began in his eyes and he swallowed thickly before he continued. "The doctor prescribed bedrest and wants to watch her carefully. He let me stay tonight until she fell asleep but said even I will have to stick to visiting hours in the future." Patrick explained.
Sister Julienne grabbed his hands and said, "Patrick she is strong and brave. You will both survive this, no matter what happens."
"God I hope she survives this. I don't know what I would do without her." He said before he collapsed onto the settee sobbing. She sat next to him and rubbed his back until he calmed, using the same technique she had used a few hours prior on Timothy. Once they pulled away from each other he realized that she was mouthing a prayer as she had helped him calm down. He knew that was something Shelagh did too. Even though her life as a nun was behind her she still prayed daily and he assumed she would be doing so even more now.
"Go on upstairs and try to get some sleep. I will head back to Nonnatus House but I can come back in the morning if you think you will need help. I know Angela did not cooperate very well tonight as she was concerned with where you both were." Sister Julienne stated.
"Thank you for the offer but I think I can manage to get both kids ready in the morning. Thank you for taking care of them both tonight." Patrick responded
"I simply went where God called me, just as you did." She replied before squeezing his hands one more time and getting up to head towards the door.
When she arrived back at Nonnatus House it was late. She had missed Compline and the Great Silence had begun but she didn't mind. She didn't need to speak aloud to pray so she headed to the chapel.
