A month after Story 4 The First Time
16 years old
Disclaimer: I do not own The Mr. Men Show or any of its characters, but I do own Elizabeth and the idea for this story.
The light green Mr. Man found himself in a room he recognized immediately. He looked around, his shock and confusion growing when he noticed the two beside him. What was going on? How did he get back here?
We haven't used the portal since… His thoughts were interrupted by a buzzing sound, and it took him a moment to realize that it was the human's phone.
"Who's that?" he heard himself ask, and suddenly an alarm went off in his head. I'm reliving that day!
"Roxanne," the girl answered as she replied to her best friend, not taking her eyes off her phone. The light green Mr. Man felt the urge to look over to see what she was typing, but before he could move, she lowered her phone and turned her attention back to the TV. A moment later she stood up and announced that she'd be right back.
He was aware that the smaller man asked to go with her, but their voices faded to the back of his mind. He could hear blood roaring in his ears. He knew what was about to happen, but he honestly wasn't sure how to feel. At first he had been hesitant about going through with it, but then he attacked her and pinned her down, and he realized that his best friend had been right. He had felt powerful and in control. He had enjoyed those feelings.
But all that enjoyment went away when he saw how much pain she was in, and he started having regrets. Yet he still held her down while his friend continued to hurt her, and afterward he couldn't stop himself from asking for a turn even though he knew it was wrong.
Once more, he was having conflicted feelings about this whole thing. The burning sensation running through his body was screaming at him to do it again, while his heart and brain was telling him that he should try to talk his friend out of doing this. He was torn between doing the right thing and doing the easy thing, which would be to give into his longing.
Suddenly he realized it was just him and his best friend in the bedroom.
"You know what to do," the small man said, smirking.
The light green Mr. Man stumbled to his feet. "Are you sure you want to do this?" he questioned.
"Don't chicken out now!" his best friend snapped at him. "You promised to help me if I couldn't talk her into doing it with me willingly, and you saw what happened! She refuses to do anything other than kissing so we have to make her do it." There was annoyance in his friend's voice, but when he finished talking, he smiled disturbingly.
His light green friend stared down at him, trying to recognize the once cheerful, kind hearted person who he used to be very close to. But now all he saw was someone who no longer cared about anybody but himself, someone who was so focused on getting what he wanted that he didn't care who he hurt to get it.
Nothing's been the same since we found those videos… I wish we never used her laptop!
Suddenly another thought came to him. Maybe it wasn't too late for them. Maybe he could stop this before they did something really terrible.
An idea in mind, the light green Mr. Man dipped his head to his smaller friend like he did the first time to show him that he understood the plan. Then he hurried across the room, hiding behind the door. He watched his friend climb onto the bed, then hopped down on the other side so the girl wouldn't see him right away.
I hope this works…
A moment later the human entered the room again, reaching for her phone when it started ringing, but before she could answer it, the light green Mr. Man came out of hiding and grabbed her. But instead of tightening his grip on her like he did the first time, he spun her around so she was staring up at him.
"There's no time to explain," he hurriedly said. "You just need to get out of here now."
She blinked up at him, confusion in her eyes.
He opened his mouth, but before he could tell her again that she needed to go, an angry voice spoke out from the other side of the room. He looked up to see his best friend standing on the bed.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?"
Quickly he turned his attention back on the human girl. "Get out of here!" he urged. When she still didn't move, he shouted," Go!"
Startled and still looking confused, the girl rushed out of the room.
Once she was gone, the light green Mr. Man turned back around, not surprised to see the small man marching over to him. "What the hell is wrong with you?" his best friend demanded as he advanced on him.
The light green Mr. Man backed up. He looked behind him to see that he was about to be trapped between his outraged friend and the wall. Careful to keep his distance, he slipped past the small man and crossed the room. "C-Calm down, Mr. Small," he stammered. "Everything's going to be okay now. We can go back home, and things can go back to the way they were before we found the portal." Suddenly he hit the bed, and he climbed onto it, gulping as Mr. Small stumbled up beside him.
As soon as he got his balance, the small man glared down at him, and the light green Mr. Man felt like he sunk under his gaze. "When will you get it through your thick skull? Nothing will ever be the same again!"
Mr. Nosy woke up with a start. He was breathing heavily, and something wet was rolling down his face. He wiped away the sweat and glanced around, relief washing over him when he realized that he was in the bedroom he shared with his best friend, back in their home world.
It was just a dream, he told himself, but then questions started popping in his head. Was there a portal in their closet that took them to the real world or was that part of the dream too? Was there really a human girl out there named Elizabeth? Did his best friend date her until they hurt her which broke them up?
He knew there was only one way to find out. Slowly he got out of bed and made his way to the door of the bedroom where he peeked out. At first he thought the house was empty, but then he spotted the small man sitting at the table in the kitchen, eating a sandwich and taking sips from his drink every now and again.
Mr. Nosy studied him, noticing that he didn't seem annoyed or upset in any way. He almost looked content. Relief washed over the light green Mr. Man. It had all been a dream after all. He may have enjoyed the things the other world had that theirs didn't with a guilty conscience, but he was really glad to know none of it was real if it meant they would stay the same.
A smile on his face, Mr. Nosy walked across the living room, but as he got closer, Mr. Small looked up, his eyes suddenly flashing with annoyance. Mr. Nosy came to a halt, feeling like reality just slapped him in the face. It hadn't been just a dream. There really was a portal in their closet, and his best friend did date a human, eventually hurting her. And the two Mr. Men weren't who they once were.
What his best friend told him in his dream echoed in his head. Nothing will ever be the same again. Mr. Nosy suddenly realized how true that was. He can miss the way things used to be all he wanted, but there's no taking back what they did almost a month ago to a poor human girl who only wanted friends.
With a depressed sigh, the light green Mr. Man walked the rest of the way into the kitchen, going straight to the refrigerator to get something to drink. But he turned around when he heard Mr. Small talking to him.
"Your whimpering woke me up," the small man grumbled. He finished his sandwich, then grabbed his plate and walked over to the counter. "What were you dreaming about anyways?"
Mr. Nosy watched as he used the step ladder to get up. Then his mind went back to his dream. "I don't remember," he lied. He didn't want to tell Mr. Small that he was starting to regret what they did because knowing the way his friend was now, he'd get upset and yell at him.
"Well, next time try to dream a little quieter, okay?" Mr. Small glanced at him before placing his dirty plate in the sink.
Yes, because I have control of what I do while I'm sound asleep, Mr. Nosy thought indignantly, but he held his tongue, not in the mood to deal with his friend's short-temper right now. In response to the small man, he just nodded and remained silent.
"Good." Mr. Small hopped to the floor again. "So I was thinking we could make a quick appearance in town, and then come back here because I can only take so much of their kid show world."
Mr. Nosy frowned. "We're a part of this world, which means we are also a part of their kid show world," he pointed out, though he regretted opening his mouth when his small friend snapped around, eyes blazing with anger. I can't say anything without him turning on me!
"Out there is the kid show," he growled, pointing to the kitchen window, and Mr. Nosy followed his gesture, just catching a glimpse of someone walking past the observatory, but they were out of sight before he could see who it was. "We are adults in this house," the small man went on. "And we want nothing to do with their sissy world, nothing to do with their preschool behavior and their childish chipperness. Do you understand me? It's all sickening."
But they are still our friends, Mr. Nosy thought, but he knew the small man wouldn't see anyone in this world as his friend anymore. Suddenly he felt trapped, like the walls around him were closing in on him, and he needed to get out before he was crushed.
Forgetting about his thirst, he looked down at Mr. Small. "Actually, I-I have something I need to do," he stammered, swallowing his fear.
Mr. Small narrowed his eyes. "What do you have to do?"
The light green Mr. Man glanced away from him and shifted his feet nervously. "I-I wanted to go to the other world."
He could feel Mr. Small's eyes burning into him. "Why?"
Mr. Nosy's heart pounded in his chest and his mind raced. Think! Think! Then it came to him, the only thing he knew his friend would understand and be sympathetic toward because he had to go through it himself for almost a year and a half before he finally got what he longed for. "I miss… certain things," the light green Mr. Man confessed, turning back to his small friend. "I really need to go to the other world to relieve myself of… these feelings…"
"I see." A smirk appeared on Mr. Small's face. "So you're finally giving into your true feelings? About time."
Mr. Nosy just nodded, deciding not to mention all the times he'd sneak off to the other world when Mr. Small and Elizabeth were asleep to take care of his own needs. It was bad enough that his small friend talked him into hurting the human; if he knew how much he had enjoyed it, he'd want to do stuff like that more often, and Mr. Nosy didn't think he could handle more guilt. He already hated that Mr. Small liked to play mind games with their Dillydale friends.
The Welsh accent broke into his thoughts. "Okay, you can go," the small man allowed him. "I'll come up with some excuse for why you're not with me. Just don't be long and don't let her see you."
The light green Mr. Man nodded in understanding and hurried across the living room. "Oh, and don't have too much fun without me!" he heard his friend call after him.
Oh, you don't have to worry about that, Mr. Nosy responded to him in his head. He couldn't tell his friend the real reason he wanted to go to the other world because he knew he wouldn't let him go then.
Once in the bedroom, Mr. Nosy opened up the portal and stepped through, closing the door behind him. Almost instantly his body relaxed and he could breathe again. Peace at last. As long as he was in this world, he didn't need to watch what he did or said in fear of Mr. Small going off on him.
He walked farther into the room and looked around. To his relief, there was no sign of the human girl. The door was open, but he knew she always left it open so her cats could come in and lay on her bed whenever they wanted. He didn't see either of them now, and there was no barking which told him Elizabeth's dogs were outside because otherwise they would have sensed the Mr. Man's presence and would have started having a fit the moment he stepped out of the portal.
He listened for another moment, but he didn't hear anyone in the other room. The whole house was silent.
I'm safe, he told himself as he sat down on the bed. He glanced around the bedroom, his mind flashing back to the first time they went through the portal and met the human girl who became a big part of their lives for three years.
"We were so innocent," he said out loud. "We were only curious to know more about this world, but it's that curiosity that destroyed our innocence." He remembered them coming here one day while Elizabeth was at school, and they had noticed her laptop on her bed.
It was the first time they thought to use it, and they only wanted to see if she had written any new stories. Then Mr. Nosy suggested something that would change their lives forever.
"Let's see if we can find anything else out about our show." The light green Mr. Man had gestured to the closet, indicating the portal to their world.
His small friend had agreed. Thus began their exploration of the internet. It had started with them researching about The Mr. Men Show, then they saw a link to something else and they clicked it. For a while they looked at stuff about other shows, but one of those shows was a little too graphic for a couple of kid's show characters and it opened up a whole new list of options that exposed them to things that changed their personalities and turned them into who they are today.
When they first saw it, they were shocked and talked about stopping before they got too far in. But their curiosity got the best of them and after only a few videos they were both starting to enjoy it. Mr. Nosy didn't vocally enjoy it as much as Mr. Small had. He described in great detail what he would like to do to his girlfriend, and Mr. Nosy listened, his own urges and needs increasing but he kept his longing a secret, knowing Mr. Small had more of a chance of getting what he wanted since Mr. Nosy wasn't in a relationship.
Maybe that's why he asked for a turn after Mr. Small was done with her. He saw his chance and took it even though he knew it was wrong.
With a heavy sigh, Mr. Nosy flung himself onto the bed, his head hitting the pillow. He was surprised to feel something hard under it. Curious, he picked up the pillow and blinked down at the red covered notebook.
"Is this the same one we gave her?" he questioned, and after a quick look, he realized that it was. He flipped to the last entry he remembered reading, seeing that she had written in it since the last time they were here.
He read it silently to himself.
It's been almost two weeks since they did that to me, and I'm terrified that they will return. I can't sleep in my room because they could come through my closet at any time. I think I see them everywhere. I hate myself now and started punishing myself by cutting my arms…
Mr. Nosy gasped out loud, having to stop mid-sentence when he read that. "S-She's hurting herself?" he stammered. He frowned deeply. "We messed her up badly," he murmured as he set the notebook down and covered it back up with the pillow, unable to go on reading how much she was suffering because of what the Mr. Men did to her.
When they first met her, she admitted that she was starting to become depressed because she had no friends and all the kids at her school teased her or shunned her out. But then she was happy for a few years with her boyfriend and his friend, and for once in her life she trusted someone and opened up to them. Now she was worse than she was before they came to her world. He wished they never found that portal. She'd be better off right now; she wouldn't be terrified and hurting herself, that's for sure.
The Mr. Man sighed. "I want to help her, but I can't change the past."
For a moment he stayed on the bed; then he got up and left the girl's bedroom. Before entering the living room, he poked his head around the corner. No sign of anyone. He noticed the tree near the window and all the decorations, reminding him that it was almost Christmas, but he knew he and his friend wouldn't be celebrating this year.
Pushing the holiday out of his mind, he walked over to the front door and listened. Silence. Nobody was home.
He opened the door, closing it behind him once on the porch. Right away he heard high-pitched barking. Looking up, he spotted Elizabeth's Dachshund staring straight at him, growling and barking. More barking exploded under his feet and he realized that her little Chihuahua must be hiding beneath the porch.
Mr. Nosy sighed and started toward the steps, going to leave the yard and go on a walk to clear his mind. But he froze when he noticed something. It was a leather case that he's seen Elizabeth's mom carry with her, and once he had questioned the girl about it.
"It's where she keeps her cigarettes," Elizabeth had told him. "I don't fully understand why she smokes," she'd confessed," but she seems to want to do it when someone or something's bothering her. I guess it's like a stress reliever."
A stress reliever, the light green Mr. Man now thought, still looking down at the case. Then he felt his feet taking him over there and he picked it up, opening it. At first he was hesitant, thinking maybe it wasn't a good idea after all.
But when he started putting it back, he heard his best friend's voice in his head, yelling at him and saying that he's useless when he doesn't do something he likes. He was under so much stress now because of the small Mr. Man. He needed relief.
No longer feeling hesitant, he pulled out a cigarette. He put it in his mouth, about to light it with the lighter that was also in the case. But before he could, the sound of an engine made him look up. Alarm shot through him when he saw the white car pulling into the driveway. He noticed that Elizabeth sat in the passenger seat.
I can't let her see me! he thought, fighting back panic. In a hurry but carefully, he put the cigarette and the lighter in his pocket. Then he opened the door and ran inside before the human girl spotted him. He went straight to her closet and opened up the portal.
Once back in his own world, he found himself breathing heavily and his heart was beating fast in his chest. "That was a close one," he said out loud, trying to calm down now that he was safely home, but he jumped when he heard his best friend's voice.
"What was?" Mr. Small entered the room and walked over to him, staring up at him as he waited for an answer.
Mr. Nosy was trying to come up with a lie, but then he sighed and confessed," I was almost spotted."
The small Mr. Man narrowed his eyes. "You weren't though, were you?" He spoke in a slow, threatening tone.
Quickly Mr. Nosy shook his head.
"Good." Mr. Small relaxed a little, and he headed to his bed. Mr. Nosy was about to slip out of the room and go to the backyard where he would smoke a cigarette for the first time in his life. But he froze when Mr. Small started talking again. He didn't want his small friend to get upset with him, so he forced himself to stay.
I've been stressed for almost a year. I can wait a couple of minutes.
"How is she?" Mr. Small asked unexpectedly as he climbed onto his bed, turning to the light green Mr. Man.
Mr. Nosy blinked. "Who?" he questioned, and Mr. Small rolled his eyes. Then a name popped into his head. "Oh, Elizabeth!" For a brief moment he considered telling him how messed up they made her, how terrified she was and that because of them she was cutting herself, but he had a feeling that Mr. Small wouldn't care. Maybe he cared about her in the beginning but all that changed when he realized that she wouldn't give him what he wanted. Mr. Nosy didn't think he felt any more loyalty toward the human girl.
"She's fine," he lied. "I mean, I didn't get to talk to her, since I didn't want her to see me, but she looked fine. And... I read her notebook."
He regretted saying that when Mr. Small turned to him, a spark of interest in his eyes. He jumped off the bed and ran to his friend, who took a step back.
"What did she say in it?" he asked eagerly.
Mr. Nosy looked down at him in confusion. "Why do you want to know that? I thought you didn't care about her anymore."
"I don't!" he replied indignantly, and he huffed as he looked away. But after another moment, he sighed and turned back to Mr. Nosy. "Fine, I still care about her. I loved her," he went on after Mr. Nosy looked at him in shock. "Feelings like that don't just vanish overnight. I care deeply about her and love her a lot."
The light green Mr. Man didn't understand. "If you feel like that, then why did you want to hurt her? You knew that would end your relationship."
Mr. Small shrugged. "I guess my needs are more powerful than my love for her, but that doesn't mean I don't love her." He was silent for a couple of moments, shifting his feet, and glancing around the room before turning back to his nosy friend. "A few times I found myself regretting what we did and wishing we never did it," he confessed, and hope rose in Mr. Nosy. Maybe his friend was finally having some remorse. Could this be the beginning of them going back to the way they were? He wouldn't be stressed anymore so maybe he wouldn't feel the need to smoke.
Good thing I didn't try it first, he thought, remembering Elizabeth saying that it was addicting.
Mr. Nosy opened his mouth, about to ask if they could put all this behind them, only to close his jaws again when his small friend continued. "But when I have those regrets, I remind myself how much fun it was and how much I enjoyed it— how much we both enjoyed it." He eyed Mr. Nosy, who remained silent. "When I remember the fun and pleasure, I no longer feel regret. Yeah, I guess I miss being with her, but I'm not going to deny that I loved our actions more than her."
All hope drained out of the light green Mr. Man as he listened to his friend. He's not going to change, he realized, frowning deeply. All over again he felt the need to smoke. If they were going to stay the way they were, he needed something to relieve all the stress Mr. Small put him through.
"Mr. Nosy?" His friend's voice broke into his thoughts.
"Um... yeah?"
"Are you even listening to me?" he demanded, crossing his arms.
Mr. Nosy nodded, then said," But there's something I need to do outside. I'll be back soon!" he called over his shoulder, leaving the bedroom before his small friend could ask him what he was doing. As he walked across the living room, he let out a heavy sigh.
Now in the backyard, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the cigarette, putting it in his mouth and lighting it with the lighter he stole from Elizabeth's mom. Almost at once smoke filled his mouth and he started coughing. Putting the cigarette between his fingers, he tried to calm his sudden fit. At last he stopped coughing, but his throat hurt intensely. He stared down at the cigarette.
"Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all," he said in a raspy voice. He was about to put it out, but he jumped when he heard a voice behind him.
"What are you doing?"
Mr. Nosy spun around, his eyes growing huge when he saw his best friend. "N-Nothing!" he stammered, hiding the cigarette behind his back, being careful not to burn himself.
The small man marched over to him. "Show me," he demanded, pointing to what he was hiding.
Mr. Nosy sighed and showed his friend.
"You're smoking?" Mr. Small exclaimed, shocked. "Why? Do you want to die?"
"I-It's not that bad." Mr. Nosy looked down at the cigarette.
"You do realize it causes cancer right?"
Mr. Nosy's eyes widened. "R-Really?"
Mr. Small nodded. "After Elizabeth told us that her mom smokes, I did a little research and found out that cigarettes cause lung cancer."
Mr. Nosy frowned. It's also supposed to relieve stress. He was torn. Was it worth risking getting a deadly disease just to calm himself after dealing with his small friend? He looked down at Mr. Small, hoping to see concern in his eyes. If he showed concern for the light green Mr. Man, he'd reconsider this. But instead he wore a disgusted expression as he stood there, arms crossed.
I don't think he actually cares about me, Mr. Nosy thought, sighing inwardly.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Small." He put the cigarette in his mouth and sucked in, holding back a cough as he blew out the smoke.
Mr. Small was silent for a long moment, watching as Mr. Nosy finished his cigarette and tossed it to the ground, putting it out with his foot. Then the small man closed his eyes and took a deep breath, letting it out again as if to calm himself.
"Fine." The orange Mr. Man opened his eyes. "I warned you, but you won't listen. Suck those death sticks; see if I care!" With all that said, he turned around and stormed back inside, slamming the door behind him.
Mr. Nosy stared after him, frowning. So he doesn't care…
He sat down on the ground, hanging his head. He was already craving another cigarette, but he knew if he went back to the other world now, Elizabeth would surely see him. Suddenly a thought came to him. Did he have to keep stealing cigarettes from the girl's mother? Sooner or later she'd notice something was up, especially if he took more than one at a time because he didn't think he could only smoke once a day or once every few days. But if he didn't take them from Elizabeth's mom, then where would he get them?
Well smoking was surprisingly popular in Elizabeth's world, and he was sure he could go to any public place and find someone who did it. It'd be safer to steal from strangers, people who couldn't see him, than risk Elizabeth finding out that he's taking cigarettes from her mom.
He was about to get up and see if he could find a pack full of them that he could steal from someone so he didn't have to go back for a few days. But he froze when he remembered how angry his friend had gotten when he caught him smoking.
"I don't want to get yelled at again," he muttered. "I'll let him calm down and get used to the idea of me smoking." For now, the light green Mr. Man stayed sitting on the ground, lifting his head to stare up at the blue sky. He still felt guilty about enjoying the same things his friend did, and he missed who they once were, wishing they could go back to that time when they were nice and innocent.
But all that's in the past, he told himself. They've both changed and he has to accept that, and maybe he can now that he found a way to relax when Mr. Small's stressing him out and upsetting him, making him feel bad about himself.
I just really hope smoking helps me... Because if it doesn't, I don't know what else to do…
