Birds-Eye View

By Swellison

Sam felt Dean's hands expertly untying his bound wrists. Once freed, Sam reached back and yanked the blindfold from his eyes. He took in the back-of-beyond countryside surrounding them. "Aren't we too old for this sh—crap?"

"Never too old for training, Sammy."

Sam stuffed the blindfold in his pocket—you never know what could be useful—glaring down at his twenty-year old brother. "It's SAM."

Dean ignored him, scanning their empty environs. No roads, rivers or trails; some scattered trees. Dean walked towards the largest tree, Sam automatically trailing behind. They stopped at the tree and Dean gestured towards him. "Start climbing."

"Why me?"

"You're taller, you can see more, Sasquatch."

Eschewing further argument, Sam hoisted himself upon the sturdy lowest branch, then climbed as far up the tree as he could. He glanced around, noting a cluster of brick buildings at the horizon. Some sort of university. Sam remembered his math teacher's offer to write a glowing recommendation letter for his college applications.

"See anything, Birdman?"

My future. Sam refocused on the landscape. Dad could only hide his tire tracks for so long; Sam spotted where the truncated tracks resumed. "Tire tracks about a mile east."

"Let's go."
