Charlie feels a little bit silly. It's not as if he's run away from home, because he's an adult, and he can't run away from his own home.
Still, Tonks doesn't know where he's gone, and for that he feels guilty.
Despite that, the Romanian wind licks at his face, and he watches a dragon in the distance spray fire into the distance. He longs to be closer, to touch the dragon, to work with it.
What's really gnawing at him is the knowledge that he could have that. He could have the ability to stay here, at the dragon reserve, for however long he'd like. Until he grows old and dies, if that's what he'd prefer.
The decision seems so easy — this is what he truly wants, what he's found he loves — but there's one glaring problem for him: Tonks.
Tonks, who's at her apartment right now, probably just waking up, looking forward to seeing Charlie later. For one fleeting moment, Charlie considers accepting the job at the dragon reserve immediately, and never going back to England. The thought leaves as quickly as it comes; it's not like he can leave England forever — his family is still there, and he doesn't want to leave them and never see them again. Besides, he's going to be called back for his decision in three days.
Three days, they told him. He could stay at the reserve, in one of the spare apartments on the grounds, and he could think about if he wants to join them or not. If he does, he'll be able to live there, working and training with dragons every single day.
It's scary, thinking that his entire future could change so quickly.
He looks out into the grounds from the small hill he's found. He's nowhere near close enough to interact with any of the dragons, but he can still see them, and he thinks about how much he wants to be out there, with them.
The problem is, that he doesn't want to leave Tonks. He likes her — they've been best friends since they were fourteen, and lately they've been edging on the side of something more and…
Charlie's not sure if he can give that all up. If he could have his way, he'd tell Tonks to come with him, that they could both live in Romania, on the dragon reserve, and they could stay together until their deaths. Tonks wouldn't give up her dream of becoming an auror, though. Plus, it's selfish for Charlie to want that. He knows that.
He just wishes he could know what part of his heart to listen to — does he work with dragons, or does he stay with Tonks?
He knows that sooner or later, he's going to have to face Tonks. She doesn't know about Charlie being at the reserve, about him even considering the job in Romania. They're supposed to hang out today…
He should let her know about him leaving.
