Was it always like this?

What?

The world. Was it always so full of terror?

No world is perfect.

I know that. But was there a time when things weren't so bad? Was there once a time when we lived in relative peace, in harmony with the world around us?

...Yes.

Really?

Not to say it didn't have its flaws, but yes.

Describe it to me.

Why do you want to know? That was the past. You can't get it back, no matter how hard you try.

But if we know how great things once were, it might encourage us to look toward a brighter future.

I'm not even sure that I could recount it accurately.

Please?

The legend of how it all started have been passed from mouth to mouth thousands of times. Almost every version of the story is different.

I'm listening.

As I said, the old world wasn't perfect; even monsters such as Creepers and spiders terrorized the dark nights. Still, it was nothing that we couldn't handle. They didn't often stray into our brightly-lit settlements, and if one were to wonder too close, we had guards to dispatch of them.

Creepers? Spiders? They've existed the whole time?

Yes, probably as long as all forms of humanity. The one thing we have that they don't is the intelligence and capability to birth civilizations. The Three Kingdoms co-operated with one another, leading advancements in building, technology, and magic; meanwhile, smaller settlements competed for trade with the Kingdoms.

It all sounded so peaceful.

It wasn't without its conflict. Defectors split off and formed their own armies, ravaging the smaller settlements and looting them of their supplies. They experimented with dark forms of magic, and birthed their own twisted beings.

The undead?

No. As a matter of fact, the undead were brought about by one relatively well-intentioned soul. In a world that was constantly advancing, no one ever thought that maybe we were moving too fast. No one once thought that we had pushed too far, until we did.

So what happened?
