Chapter 10: Welcome to Beacon
From the top of Beacon Tower, Ozpin and Glynda observed the Atlesian ships flying around the Academy.
"Ironwood certainly loves bringing his work wherever he travels," Glynda sighed.
"Well, running an Academy and a military makes him a busy man," Ozpin replied, "but yes, those are a bit of an eyesore."
A chirping sound drew their attention to the door, indicating that someone wanted to enter.
"Come in," Ozpin said.
The doors opened to reveal an older man clad in a white military uniform complete with gloves. His black hair was starting to gray at the edges and his dark eyes had a few lines, but his smile made him look younger than he was.
This was General James Ironwood, Headmaster of Atlas Academy and General of the Atlesian Military.
"Ozpin!" he said, sounding genuinely happy.
The fellow Headmaster walked towards him, "hello, General."
"Please, drop the formalities. It's been too long," Ironwood said as they shook hands, "and Glynda! It has certainly been too long since we last met."
"Oh, James," she replied with a hand to her chest and a fake smile before dropping it and looking at Ozpin, "I'll be outside."
"Well, she hasn't changed a bit," Ironwood chuckled as Glynda left.
Ozpin walked over to his desk and used a kettle to fill a mug, "so, what in the world has brought you all the way down from Atlas? Headmasters don't typically travel with their students, even for the Vytal Festival."
He turned and offered the mug to Ironwood, who accepted it and they clinked their cups.
"Well, you know how much I love Vale this time of year," the general replied, bringing out a flask and pouring some of the contents into his mug, "besides, with you hosting, I thought that this might be a good opportunity for us to catch up."
"I can certainly appreciate the quality time between friends," Ozpin replied as he refilled his mug before looking out the window, "however, a small fleet outside has me concerned."
Ironwood shrugged, "well, concern is what brought them here."
Ozpin's expression didn't change, "I understand that travel between Kingdoms has become increasingly difficult."
Ironwood's expression became more serious, "Oz, you and I both know why I brought those men."
Ozpin drank from his mug before setting it down, "We are in a time of peace, shows of power like this are just going to give off the wrong impression."
"But if what Qrow said is true-"
"If what Qrow said is true, then we will handle this tactfully," Ozpin raised a finger, "It's the Vytal Festival, a time to celebrate unity and peace. So I suggest that you not scare people by transporting hundreds of soldiers halfway across the continent."
"I'm just being cautious," Ironwood pointed out.
"As am I," Ozpin said, "which is why we will continue to train the best Huntsmen and Huntresses we can."
"Believe me, I am," Ironwood sighed as he turned to leave, "but ask yourself this: do you honestly believe your students can win a war?"
Ozpin looked down, "I hope they never have to."

Later that day in the Beacon Library, Team RWBY was playing a board game at a table.
"Yang Xiao Long!" Ruby cried, "prepare your troops for battle!"
Yang pumped her fist, "bring it on!"
"I deploy the Atlesian Air Fleet!" Ruby slammed her card down as Yang gasped, "looks like I get to fly right over your Ursai and attack your walls directly!"
As Ruby made airplane and explosion noises, Yang pointed a finger at her with fake indignance, "you fiend!"
"And since Atlas is part of Mantle," Ruby went on, "my repair time is only one turn."
Yang smirked and held up one of her cards, "pretty sneaky, sis… but you just activated my trap card!"
"What?!" Ruby shrieked.
"Giant Nevermore!" Yang slammed her card down, "if I roll a seven or higher, fatal feathers will slice your fleet in two!"
"But if you roll a six or lower," Ruby pointed out, "the Nevermore will turn on your own forces."
"That's just a chance I'm willing to take," Yang shot back.
As the two sisters kept bantering, Team DVIN sat nearby.
Dante and Pyrrha were studying while Nora slept on Dante's shoulder and Iris read a comic book.
"Come on, Iris," Dante said, holding out a hand, "we have a test coming up."
"But I wanna see if Batman saves Catwoman from Ra's al Ghul!" Iris whined.
Dante gently grabbed the end of the comic, "this comic will still exist after the test. If you want, I can read it and tell you the ending."
Iris pouted as Dante took the comic and slid his textbook over, "this is abuse of power."
"No," Dante wagged a finger, "this is me being responsible by making sure that all of my Teammates get good grades."
He then started reading the comic while Nora stirred and muttered something about pancakes.
"Well, Weiss," Yang said, "it's your turn."
"I have… absolutely no idea what's going on," the heiress admitted.
Yang scooted next to her, "Look, it's easy! You're playing as Vacuo, which means that all Vacuo-based cards come with a bonus."
"That sounds dumb," Weiss noted as Yang started going through her cards.
"See," the blonde muttered, "you've got Sandstorm, Desert Scavenge... Oh, oh! Resourceful Raider! See, now you can take Ruby's discarded Air Fleet and put it in your hand!"
The girl in red cried at the underhanded move.
"And since Vacuo warriors have an endurance against natural-based hazards, you can use Sandstorm to disable my ground forces and simultaneously infiltrate my kingdom!" Yang continued before leveling a finger at Weiss, "just know that I will not forget this declaration of war."
"And that means…" Weiss waited for further explanation.
"You're just three moves away from conquering Remnant!" Ruby said through her tears.
After processing that, Weiss began to cackle maniacally, "Yes! Fear the almighty power of my forces! Cower as they pillage your homes and weep as they take your children from your very arms-"
"Trap card," Yang said in a monotone before reorganizing the pieces on the board, "your armies have been destroyed."
Weiss slumped into her chair, "I hate this game of emotions we play!"
Ruby hopped into her partner's lap, "stay strong, Weiss! We'll make it through this together!"
"Shut up!" Weiss said as she hugged the smaller girl, "don't touch me!"
Yang put her hands behind her head, "alright Blake, you're up!"
Obviously lost in thought, the girl in black perked her head up, "oh, um, sorry, what am I doing?"
"You're playing as Vale trying to conquer the Kingdoms of Remnant!" Yang provided helpfully.
"Right…" Blake replied, seeing some irony in that.
Before anything else could happen, Iris walked over, "hey, can I play?"
"Sorry, Iris," Ruby said, "we've already got four people."
"Besides," Weiss added, "this game requires a certain level of tactical cunning that I seriously doubt that you possess."
"Uhh, you attacked your own naval fleet two turns ago," Yang pointed out, causing Weiss to huff.
"Bring it on, Ice Queen!" Iris challenged, "I'll have you know that I have been told that I am a natural born leader!"
"By who?" Weiss asked dryly, "your mother?"
"You have no proof!" Iris leveled a finger at her, "come on, let me play your hand for one turn!"
"I'm not trusting you with the good citizens of Vacuo!" Weiss said, cradling her cards.
"Hey, I'm actually from Vacuo!" Iris shot back, "besides, you've trusted me with way more important stuff before, like how Blake and Dante are secretly Fa-"
Pyrrha bolted over and clamped a hand over Iris' mouth, "fun-loving people whom we all admire and respect."
Dante chuckled, but Blake was not amused at all.
"Hey, gang!" chirped a familiar girl's voice.
Everyone turned to see Kiriko and Hana walking into view.
"Hey, Kiriko," Ruby waved back.
"Ruby, Yang, Blake… Ice Queen."
"Why does everyone keep calling me that?" Weiss muttered indignantly.
"I never got the chance to formally introduce you to my old friend," Kiriko went on.
"Aren't libraries for reading?" Hana wondered out loud.
"Thank you!" came a man's voice from somewhere nearby.
"Pancakes!" Nora snorted as she was jolted awake.
"Nerd," Kiriko chuckled.
"I'm not a nerd, I'm a geek; there's a difference," Hana replied before waving at everyone, "I'm Hana."
Dante raised an eyebrow, "you wouldn't happen to be from Haven, would you?"
"I would be," Hana said as she walked over with an extra sway in her hips, "don't think I got your name, handsome."
"It's Dante," he replied with a smirk, "nice to meet you."
"Are you kidding me?!" Weiss whispered loudly.
Kiriko looked over to Blake, "never took you as the board game-playing type."
"Right, well, I think I'm done playing actually," she replied before standing up, "I'll see you guys later."
Then Blake left before anyone else could say anything.
After an awkward silence, Nora shrugged, "women."

Once she got back to her dorm, Blake sat on her bed as she thought about everything that happened in the past few days.
She tried to make sense as to why the White Fang would work with someone as unscrupulous as Roman Torchwick, but she just got more frustrated the more she thought about it.
A while later, the rest of her Team opened the door.
"Ugh, we never should have let them play!" Yang groaned.
"You're just mad that the new girl beat you," Ruby chuckled, "see, if you had just attacked when I told you, none of this would have happened."
Blake quietly went over to the door, but a voice stopped her from leaving.
"Stop," Weiss said firmly, "lately, you've been quiet, antisocial, and moody."
Yang raised an eyebrow, "uh, have you met Blake?"
"Which I get is kind of your thing," Weiss went on, "but you've been doing it more than usual! Which quite frankly, is unacceptable! You made a promise to me, to all of us, that you would let us know if something was wrong! So, Blake Belladonna, what is wrong!?"
Weiss had gotten so worked up in her speech that she was now balancing on a chair pointing at Blake. When she realized this, she got down and put the chair away.
"I just…" Blake began, "I don't understand how everyone can be so calm."
"You're still thinking about Torchwick?" Ruby asked.
"Torchwick, the White Fang, all of it!" Blake snapped, "something big is happening and no one is doing anything about it!"
"Ozpin told us not to worry," Yang pointed out, "between the police and the Huntsmen, I'm sure they can handle it."
"Well I'm not!" Blake shot back, "they don't know the White Fang like I do!"
"Okay, between blowing up nightclubs, stopping thieves, and fighting for freedom," Weiss stepped in, "I'm sure the three of you think that you're all ready to go out and apprehend these ne'er-do-wells!"
"Uh, who?" Ruby muttered.
"She means the bad guys, Ruby," Dante said, causing everyone to flinch as they noticed him leaning in the doorway, "didn't mean to overhear, but you left the door open."
"Let me once again be the voice of reason," Weiss went on, "we're students! We're not ready to handle this sort of situation!"
Dante raised an eyebrow, "so what? We just sit around doing homework and hope no one dies?"
"We're not ready!" Weiss stated.
"And we may never be ready!" Blake pointed out, "our enemies aren't just going to sit around and wait for graduation day. They're out there, somewhere, planning their next move, and none of us know what it is, but it's coming! Whether we're ready or not!"
Ruby raised her hand, "Okay, all in favor of becoming the youngest Huntsman and Huntresses to single-handedly take down a corrupt organization conspiring against the Kingdom of Vale... say aye."
"Aye," Dante said immediately, raising his hand as well.
Yang pumped her fist and looked at Blake, "Yes! I love it when you're feisty!"
"I suppose it could be fun," Weiss admitted.
Ruby smiled at Dante, "thanks for saying 'aye.'"
Dante nodded, "I'll go tell the rest of my Team."
He then crossed the hall and stuck his head through the door.
The rest of his Team were in their pajamas just hanging out; Pyrrha was reading a book while Nora and Iris were playing with Fifi.
"Hey," Dante said casually, "just so you know, Team RWBY and I decided to do some vigilante stuff that may or may not get us arrested. You want in on this, too?"
Without looking up from their activities, all three of them gave Dante a thumbs-up.
"Cool," Dante sounded like he'd been expecting that reaction, "be right back."
He went back to Team RWBY's room only to be met with Ruby bolting out the door.
Dante caught Ruby by the shoulders, "woah, woah, slow your roll; what's the rush?"
"I left my board game in the library," she said hastily.
"It'll still be there if you walk," Dante replied, "come on, let's go get it."
They turned around…
Only to see Emerald, Valerie, and Cinder coming up the hall wearing black jackets and checkered skirts.
Ruby and Cinder locked eyes while Dante and Valerie did the same thing.
"Are you guys new?" Ruby asked.
"Visiting from Haven, actually," Cinder replied.
Dante raised an eyebrow, "then what are you doing here? The exchange student dorms are further east."
"I guess we just got turned around," Valerie shrugged.
"Eh, it happens all the time," Ruby waved it off, but Dante kept his eyes on the three.
Cinder gave him a smirk and a wink, "maybe we'll see you around."
"Yeah, maybe," Ruby smiled, completely oblivious to any tension, "oh, and welcome to Beacon!"
The three nodded and continued down the hall while Ruby and Dante went in the other direction.
Ruby looked at Dante and noticed that his lips were pursed, "everything okay?"
"I don't know," he replied, "I just felt that there was something… off about those three."
Ruby thought about that for a moment before saying, "well, it's always something we can look into. Come on, let's get to the library."
Further down the hall, Valerie had the same thoughtful expression which Emerald noticed.
"You feeling alright?" she asked her partner.
"It was him," the silver-haired girl replied, "he's the one."
Cinder smirked as her eyes glowed, "this is going to be even more fun than I thought."
To Be Continued…
Author's Note:
That's a wrap!
Not really much to say about this chapter other than Dante officially met Hana and encountered Cinder's group. I felt it would make sense for him to suspect them of being up to something due to all the different kinds of people one tends to meet on the road. Not to mention what I have planned with him and Valerie.
I hope to get the next chapter out soon and I hope that FanFiction will have fixed the glitch by then.
Next time, we'll see Teams RWBY and DVIN doing some investigating around Vale and find some promising leads to what Torchwick and the White Fang are up to.
Again, feel free to favorite, follow, and/or review. All I ask is that you keep things friendly and professional, both in your praise and your critiques. Suggestions are always welcome, just keep in mind that I might not see or reply to every single review or message.
That all said,
Later Bros!
