Nightmare Motel

Chapter 2

Tobias' POV

We have been walking for what feels like forever, however it's only been really two hours. Nothing but the sounds of animals around us and our feet hitting the pavement is all we can hear. Neither one of us is willing to break the silence we have fallen into.

Thankfully we can see a cluster of buildings as we continue to walk. A small gas station with an attached garage for repairs, a run-down Motel and a small building that serves as the main office for the motel. I sigh, at the sight of some kind of life.

We tried the garage behind the gas station first. All the lights are out, with a large sign that says "closed." We look around the building towards the motel.

"Maybe they'll know where to find the owner of the garage… Or at least help us." I suggest, pointing towards the motel's main office. Tris keeps ten feet behind me, as she sighs exhaustedly and stomps behind me. I begin to wonder if this is a good idea, or if we should head back towards the car as we walk. The building seems really dated, maybe fifty or even sixty years old. The gas pumps look even possibly older than that. But at this point, I won't dare tell Tris that she was right, and I was an old run-down truck to match the rest of the decor right outside the door of the office. I swing the door open, rolling my eyes as I hear the older chimes that alert the owner to our presence. Like the gentleman I am, I hold the door open for Tris, letting her walk in first before I do. We might not be happy with each other, but I was raised right.

The moment we both step into the office we both stop cold in our tracks. The room is filled with a woman screaming in terror. The screaming seems to be coming from the back room.

"What is that?" Tris asks, concerned. She glances at the back door and the front door deciding whether or not to leave. I hold my hand out, stopping her. No. I won't just leave. I step closer to the desk, where the back door is cracked just enough. I ring the bell that sits on the counter, letting whoever that is back there know that I am here and ready for anything. At first there isn't any movement or sound other than the woman screaming. I hit the bell again, glancing over at Tris who seems more annoyed with me than ever at this point.

"Hey folks." A man peeks out of the door... He pushes himself forward, never opening the door more than it already is. He smiles at Tris and glances at me. I glance at his name tag noticing the name "Peter" under the title Manager. "How can I help you?" He asks. Ignoring the screams that continue to break the silence between us all.

"Is everything alright back there?" I ask. Trying to sound more like a person from law enforcement. My questions turn on a light in his head, as he realizes exactly what I am referring to.

"Oh." He blurts out, turning towards the door. He comes back the moment the screams stop all together. Showing us a remote in his hand and an embarrassed smile to match. "Sorry about that folk. Things get a little boring around here late at night… You know what I mean." Peter jokes.

I guess I can believe that. Doesn't look like a lot of things go on around here at this time of the night.

"Well anyway…. Is there any mechanics around here by any chance? Do you know him?" I ask.

"I.. ugh…. I think he has gone home for the night. He will probably be back around 8 in the morning." Peter says, nodding his head.

"Is there a way you can call him? We are kinda stranded. Our car broke down a few miles down the road."

"I can't. I'm sorry." He says, refusing to help us one little bit.

"Do you know if there is another garage around here?" Tris asks.

"There is nothing closer than twenty miles or so." Peter answers. "But like I said, Eric will be back around 8 if you can wait. I'm sure he can get you guys back up and running. Meanwhile, I'm wide open here." He says, lifting his hands to gesture towards the motel building.

I think for a moment about our options and if we can stick it out here for the night. Or go back to the car, only to have to turn around to walk right back here in a few hours.

"Okay. Thanks," I mutter, agreeing to a room.

"Shocking." Tris mutters under her breath. Peter and I both ignore her little remarks. What good would they do now?

"I'll get you two the honeymoon suite," Peter says, opening up a logbook.

"A regular room would be just fine. Thank you." Tris says.

"Oh no, it has a few more perks that the other rooms don't have. Trust me, you'll thank me later." Peter says, jotting down in his logbook. "I'm going to need to see some ID."

"Well whatever works… Whatever is the fastest." I suggest. Not caring what room, we land in, as long as it's a room.
