Chapter 41

Nancy fought not to roll her eyes as she stood by Jonah's desk, Jonah glaring at her.

"What the hell were you thinking, Wheeler?" He snapped

Nancy shook her head. "Sir, I was just-"

Jonah cut her off. "No excuses, your interview with Martin Brenner was outrageous, you can't just go around asking provocative questions like that, it's slander!"

"Sir it's true, his actions are not-"

"You toe the line in here, Wheeler, I do not tolerate someone who attacks their interviewees like that." Jonah snarled. "You make one more mistake like that and I'll think twice about promoting you to a live reporter, you've just failed your first trial run."

Nancy couldn't believe what she hearing, this was crazy. "I thought the job of a reporter was to expose and report the truth, sir."

"EXACTLY, THE TRUTH NOT RUMOURS!" Jonah yelled. "GET OUT AND KNOW THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING WHEELER!"

Nancy fought not to say anything, to do anything, fists clenched at her side but she simply turned and left the office, ignoring the others in the office for indeed they had to have heard. She knew that what she had asked Brenner about was the truth, contrary to what Jonah said, even if she did not have the proof on hand Brenner's reactions to her questions all but confirmed the truth. Regardless she knew she had nothing else to do here and so she gathered up her things and made her way out to her car.

Shaking her head, Nancy got into her car and started it up, reflecting on what she should do now. Slowly she considered if she should go home, or to go searching for the proof she needed, it was would be extremely risky, especially with the road blocks and checkpoints that Oscorp had set up. Still undecided she drove off and began simply driving in a random direction. She finally stopped her car, albeit not completely by choice, as she reached one of the Oscorp checkpoints. Grumbling slightly to herself she waited for her turn to reach the front of the line.

'This is ridiculous, especially since they are getting away with this, nobody is saying or doing anything...not even outwith the city, it's like nobody outside even knows and thanks to Norman Osborn being the former head of Oscorp, as well as the former mayor, the mayor's office is currently vacant and unable to do anything about Oscorp's actions.' She thought sadly as she waited.

It was ridiculous in her view that Oscorp could carry out blatant rights violations without any real reactions, it was like the people of New York didn't care, or that they bought into Brenner's lies about mutants.

"Miss, ID please."

She realized she was up at the front of the line and quickly held her ID up.

The man read it and something changed in his expression. "Ah, Nancy Wheeler, could you pull over into here please. We have something we need to deliver to you."

Nancy was confused and a little apprehensive hearing this. "Um, okay…"

She was sure she wasn't in trouble, but it still left her uneasy as she pulled her car over, allowing the line to keep moving. She got out and followed the man into the makeshift 'base' that had been set up.

"So, what-?" She began only to let out a gasp as she felt a sharp pain in her neck.

"People like you are part of the problem, Miss Wheeler." The person who injected her said. "People who don't see that mutants are the real threat, you need to be dealt with."
That was the last thing Nancy heard before she blacked out.

Swinging through the streets, easily avoiding all the 'security measures' put in place by Oscorp, Spider-Man headed for Oscorp's main headquarters.

"Alright, getting there will be the easy part, the problem will be getting into the building." He remarked.

"Yeah, I hear ya." Dustin agreed. "What exactly are we looking at, Mike?"

Mike replied after checking the computer he was working on. "Okay, I dug around and found some interesting information, there is indeed security measures, automated of course but if they can be disabled then you should be able to enter through a vent on the outside, will be on the 30th floor."

"Alright, sounds good." Spider-Man agreed as he drew closer.

Lucas then spoke up. "Max and I are digging up what we can to see if anything's changed, anything that might make things harder."

"Got it." Spidey paused and then spoke again. "Okay, gotta be careful now guys, I'm just about there, they could be checking for anything like out of place communications, have to maintain silence until I shut security off."

They agreed and went silent while Spidey landed on the edge of the building next to Oscorp's HQ.

After analysing things carefully he made carefully checked the vent he could enter by and saw indeed that it was guarded by a laser grid. He carefully tuned the lenses of his mask and found his way to the three junction boxes that controlled the defences, of which that laser grid was simply one of them. It was clear that Oscorp's security had been upgraded in the past two weeks, a sign of Brenner's paranoia, for even as Spidey disabled the first junction box, the security features that had not been disabled by this activated in low alert mode, simply scanning for threats and would likely react if they detected him. Working carefully he was able to do the same to the second one, disabled even more security, but the remaining security was now even more alert. Grimacing he knew it wasn't going to be easy, but regardless he was determined to finish this and finally, with the last junction box disabled, the security was all disabled.

"Good, we're ready, heading in." He said.

He got the confirmation from the others as he slipped in through the vent, finally infiltrating the building.
