Konata Izumi is a hardcore otaku and proud of it. Even though she doesn't look it, being shorter and "less developed" for her age, she is 18 years old and will be starting her first year at community college the very next month.

Or that's how it would've been.

But then it happened.

Konata was on her way back home from buying some anime DVDs at Animate Ikebukuro when she was suddenly blasted in the face by a sudden gust of wind, a surprisingly warm gust of wind cutting through the cool air of late March. The warm air did not fade away into the seasonal chill, rather it lingered. Konata found it strange but decided not to think much of it as she continued on her way home. But it was at that moment that she was hit again, this time by an odor like a combination of sewage water and burnt rubber, followed by the faint rumbling noise in the distance.

It was at this point Konata knew that something was off as the ground started to shake as the smell became stronger and the rumbling got louder. Everything, from nearby parked cars to the trees, began to shake with the force of the shaking becoming so great that it caused nearby windows to break and shatter. Konata felt herself almost lose her footing as the mere act of just standing still was made difficult thanks to the shaking and rumbling.

And then she saw it.

In the distance she saw a massive tidal wave of misty emerald green water littered with the various debris that it had accumulated in its path. As it got closer and closer the rumblings had turned into a roar not unlike that of a mighty alpha stag. In a panic she turned tail and ran in the opposite direction, but although she was fast the wave was faster. In an instant she was swallowed into the nasty, yet surprisingly cold water. The smell was bad enough but now it was in her mouth. It had also seemed that the ground had completely vanished under her feet as she was pulled deeper into the water, like deeper than it should have been. She desperately tried swimming up to the surface but the current just wouldn't let up as she pulled deeper and deeper down into the ever expanding depths, and with the exhaustion combined with the lack of oxygen she blacked out.

When she woke up she started violently coughing, her legs were sore and she still had that vile taste in her mouth. She figured it was only a bad dream and expected to open her eyes to her bedroom at home, but was instead greeted with more green water. And instead of waking up in her bed she was laying on a metal door that had been tipped off of the hinges. So it wasn't a dream. All her life she had wished that she could go on an epic adventure like in an anime, but not like this. "Oh well," she sighed under her breath, "No use crying about it." In this situation she knew she had to stay calm and survey her surroundings before making her next move. It was clear that the skinny body of water was a river, but it was the banks of the river that really caught her attention. Both sides were walled up with brick and concrete, painted white and reinforced with metal plating. This was less a "river" and more likely a man-made canal.

Konata surmised that it was the same on the bottom as it was on the side, though couldn't really tell for sure as the water was too dark and murky to see to the bottom. And it didn't help that the dark, overcast sky made the water look even more dark and sickly. Whatever the case she knew that she would have to find a way out of the water and onto dry land eventually. And after several hours of floating she came to a point where the canal started to funnel out and get wider. In this wider space she spotted a small platform lined with some small posts and affixed to a staircase that led up to the top of the canal's side wall. Seeing her chance, she paddled in the direction of the platform and grabbed onto one of the posts with both hands. She then began the process of getting enough of her body onto the platform and trying not to lose footing on the door or fall into the water. Once she was on solid ground she released the door from her foot and let it go with the current as it bumped and clattered against the narrowing walls.

After catching her breath, Konata stood up and proceeded to go up the stairs, and once at the top finally saw the new world that she had been whisked away to. As far as the eye can see there was nothing but rocks and sand, and aside from the small grass patches that grew along the steep hill that the gate opened on, there was no plant life to speak of. The only thing to be seen for miles, besides the rocks and sand, was a far away mountain range enveloped at its peak by a mist of thick, dark clouds illuminated from behind by the sun. Not wanting to wait around to see who or what might show up after dark, she jumped over the locked, chain link gate and made her way down the path worn through the grass and into the desert. Though seeing as there was no sign of civilization within sight at this point, she figured it would be smart to go in the direction of the flow of water in the canal, away from the mountains. As so, off she went.

In hindsight it was pretty stupid to just go wandering through the desert with no real idea where she was going. Konata had been walking for hours and all she could find amongst the rocks and sand was more rocks and more sand, on top of that the sun was starting to set. So here she was, miles away from civilization, at almost after dark, wandering aimlessly through a desert most likely filled with creatures that would bite her head off if given the chance. This would manifest a fear within her as she continued walking. The darkness creeped over the desert as the sun continued to get lower and lower under the horizon. Now, Konata wasn't afraid of the dark, no one really is; it's more a fear of what's lurking in the dark rather than the dark itself. And all the memories of every horror movie she watched and every horror game she played came flooding into her head, making her paranoia even worse. By this point she was jumping at the tiniest sounds, usually the whistling wind or the buzzing of a small bug.

It was then heard a noise that made her skin crawl. It was a noise loud enough to spend several minutes echoing around the empty desert, and unlike any noise that she had heard before. The best way to describe it was like Godzilla mixed with the Bigfoot monster from The Legend of Boggy Creek but all fed into and regurgitated out of a foghorn. This scared the hell out of her but she wasn't too concerned as clearly whatever made the noise was miles away from her. But then she heard the noise again, this time louder. Then again, even louder. Konata started to panic and ran as the noise got louder and louder signaling that whatever was making the noise was getting closer. The noise blared once more, this time followed by a large rumbling as if a whole caravan of boxcars were being rolled down a steep gravel trail. Konata looked back to see a massive monster. It was slithery like a snake but thick and boxy like a train, it had seemingly hundreds of sharp, spiked legs that pierced the ground and dragged the massive body along. It was covered in bright lights, especially the eyes at the front that were like lighthouse lights. And just under the eyes was a wide, gaping mouth with rows and rows of sharp teeth that seemed to be made of rusted metal and moved back and forth in the mouth like sawblades.

And so she ran, it would've been a hilarious moment of Déjà vu if her life wasn't in actual danger. She ran as fast as she possibly could only for the monster to plunge itself into the dirt. Konata looked back confused before it exploded back out of the ground in front of her. It lunged at her and she closed her eyes tightly and shielded her face with her arms. She froze up and awaited her death, she would be cut to pieces in one fell swoop.

But nothing of the sort came.

What did come was a sudden explosion and what sounded like the creature shrieking in pain. She opened her eyes and saw that its face was not only badly burnt but had a good chunk taken out of it. It was then hit with another explosion and let out another painful shriek. She looked over to see where the explosions came from and saw a tall figure in a brown leather duster jacket firing a M79 grenade launcher. The figure reloaded and fired at the monster's head for a third time, and this time it went down. The figure then walked up to the downed beast and poked it with the barrel end of the launcher. "I swear, these things keep getting bigger," the figure said in a low voice. The figure then looked toward Konata who jumped back. "I'm not gonna hurt you, don't worry," the figure said, getting closer. As he crouched down she was finally able to see the face of her savior illuminated by the still flickering lights of the dead monster. It was a young male, white (most likely American) and probably no older than 16 or 17. He had long, jet black hair with bangs and red eyes with dark circles under them.

"Are you okay, little girl?" he asked. Konata, coming back to her senses, said, "Y-yeah, I'm alright." The boy just nodded, walking over to the creature's lower neck area and taking out a machete. "And I'm not a little girl", she declared, just now realizing what he had just called her, "I'm 18." "Sure you are." he said as he plunged the machete into the neck of the fresh corpse and started hacking away at the meat. While it was kind of gross watching this, she couldn't help but also be fascinated at the same time. "So what is this thing?" she asked. He just looked at her, confused, and said, "You've seriously never seen a Death Worm before?" Konata just looked back and said, "I'm...not from around here." The boy just shrugged and resumed collecting the meat. "We call these things Death Worms", he explained, "though, it's not really a worm, it's more like a kind of biomechanical dinosaur." "Huh", was all she could say before he asked, "Do your parents know that you're all the way out here by yourself?" The question annoyed Konata who said, "I told you I'm not a little girl, I'm 18." "Prove it." he retorted.

Konata dug into her pocket and was relieved that she still had her wallet. She opened it up to the pocket that had her ID and held it in front of his face. He stared at it, frowning, before saying, "What does it say? I can't read this." Konata mentally facepalmed. Of course he couldn't read it, it was a Japanese ID. "Look, I'm 18 and you'll just have to trust me on that." she said. He clearly still didn't believe her, he then asked, "Could you at least tell me your name?" "My name is Konata," she replied, "Konata Izumi." He stared at her before going back to his hacking and said, "Weird name, but okay."

"Well?" she asked. "Well what?" he replied. She responded, "Well, I told you my name. Won't you tell me yours?" He just sighed and said, "Alex Rose." The boy, now named Alex, was now putting all the Death Worm meat into a pile and was tying it up with what appeared to be butcher's twine. "So just to be clear", he asked, "you don't have any parents or guardians who know where you are at the moment?" "I don't really have anywhere to go at the moment either." she admitted. Alex picked up the bundled up meat and put it in a large burlap sack. He then said to her, "Look, I don't usually do this, but I'm staying at a small motel several miles in this direction." he said, pointing opposite the direction she had been walking before, "I can take you to stay there if you want." Konata's face lit up, there was civilization after all! "Yes! Yes! A hundred times yes! Please!" she happily replied. "Alright", said Alex, "Come on."

Alex reached into his duster and pulled out a flashlight as the lights on the carcass were starting to dim. Konata followed him through the dark desert landscape for about a mile until they found his ride, a red and white colored four wheeler. Alex tied the meat to the back and said, "Alright, hop on." "Where am I gonna sit though?", she asked, to which he replied, "In front of me." Konata blinked in confusion but went along with it. Surprisingly, it wasn't as cramped as she thought it would be. "Just remember that it gets kind of bumpy so hang on tight, alright Cone?" he said. "Cone?" she asked. He then asked, "Is it okay if I call you that as a nickname?" "Sure, it's fine." she replied. With that, Alex started the engine and the pair sped through the desert.

After a couple hours they arrived at the Holiday Gallery, a motel that has clearly seen better days. Alex handed Konata a key and said, "I'm in room 07, you go on ahead and I'll explain things to the landlord while I return her four wheeler." Konata nodded and went to find the room. Arriving at the door to said room, Konata unlocked the door and entered the room only to be greeted by the sight of a little girl with bright red hair and big brown eyes holding a teddy bear. Konata slowly walked closer before the little girl scrambled to hide behind the bed. "Who are you?" the little girl cried, "Where's daddy?" Konata was now in an extremely uncomfortable position.

"Scarlett?" said Alex who had now appeared through the door. "Daddy!" the girl, now called Scarlett, yelled in delight as she rushed over to Alex and hugged him tight around his waist. "Daddy, I missed you!" she said. Alex smiled, picked her up and said, "I missed you too, sweetheart." Alex then remembered, "Oh, right. Scarlett, this young lady here is Cone. She's gonna be staying with us for a while, okay?" Scarlett looked at the strange blue haired girl then back at her daddy, her face showed some reluctance. "I know it's sudden", said Alex, "But she has nowhere to go at the moment. Even though she's a little weird, you need to try to get along with her, okay?" "Okay." Scarlett replied quietly. "By the way, where's your brother?" Alex asked. "On the playground." Scarlett replied. Alex sighed and said, "I'll be right back." and walked out leaving the two girls. Konata, trying to break the ice, looked down at the smaller girl, smiled and said, "Sorry if I scared you earlier. My name is actually Konata, but you can call me Cone if you want, okay". Scarlett gave a small smile, nodded and said, "Okay."

Alex then came walking in holding hands with a small boy with shaggy gray hair and a bandage on his nose. " I told you not to leave the room after dark." he lightly scolded. "I'm sorry Daddy." said the boy. Alex then turned his attention to Konata and said "Cone, this is my son Rollo. And Rollo, this is Cone, she's gonna be hanging with us for a while until she can find her way home." Rollo just stares at Konata before smiling brightly and waving energetically, clearing quicker to accept her than Scarlett was. "Alright you two", Alex said, "Go wash up, it's time for dinner." The two children went over to the bathroom to wash their hands. "You can join us if you want to, Cone." said Alex. "Is it gonna be the meat from that Death Worm?" asked Konata. "Yeah, but don't worry", Alex assured her, "It's totally safe for humans to eat, plus it literally tastes like chicken." Despite her reservations about eating strange animal meat, she still accepted the offer. She couldn't really afford to be picky, especially after having gone almost two days without eating.

To her surprise, the dinner was actually really good. In addition to the meat, which had been seasoned, battered and fried, there was also salty back bacon, garlic potatoes, roasted corn on the cob, buttermilk biscuits with hot honey, and a chocolate sticky cake served with vanilla ice cream for dessert. There was some small talk as Konata also explained her situation to the kids and the landlord. After dinner, the 4 went back to their room. After Alex gave the kids their baths and put them to sleep, Alex took her outside to talk. They sat on the small concrete wall just outside the room as she recounted how she was brought to this world and everything that had happened until now. "So you really aren't from here then." Alex said. "Yeah", she said sadly. "What about you?" she asked, "How did you come to this world?" Alex suddenly got a sad look on his face as he looked down towards his clasping hands. "About a year ago, my last name used to be Braddock. I was fifteen then." he said. "It was around that time when my dad got very sick, he was dying. His last wish to my mom was for her to go back to her maiden name, but she refused, saying that she would do it only after he was dead." Konata could only give him a sad look of sympathy. "He died a couple weeks later. A year after that, me and mom were out on a cross-country road trip to visit family. And that's when it happened. The winds picked up and surrounded the car, everything started to look all misty. The car was practically plucked off the road and into the air. The strong winds shook the car around, and it shook so hard that I was flung away along with one of the car doors, and after that I just blacked out. When I next woke up, I was in a makeshift hospital where they were plucking the glass out of my back with a pair of kitchen tongs."

Konata could only imagine how he felt. While she had also lost her mother, it was so early in her life that she didn't even have any actual memories of her. Alex, meanwhile, had lost both of his parents, one after the other, in such a short span. "I don't even know if mom is still alive", Alex continued, "or even if she made it to this world. I've been in this world for about a year now, and I haven't been able to find her. But I'm still not giving up looking." Konata gently put her hand on his shoulder and said, "You'll find her someday. I just know it." Alex smiled and said, "Thanks." "What about the kids?" she asked, "They're obviously not yours biologically. So where did they come from?" Alex answered, "I found Scarlett first. I was passing through West Hollum during a rainstorm and found her sprawled out in the middle of the road and barely conscious. I took her to the nearby clinic. And when she woke up, she revealed that her parents had actually been living on the streets for as long as she could remember. So I decided to adopt her. As for Rollo, me and Scarlett were visiting a small port side town when there was a boating accident that took the lives of several people, his parents among them. And since no one was willing to take him in, I decided to do it myself. So I've been taking care of them while also traveling around." Konata was amazed that he would go that far for kids he barely knew, becoming like a father to them. "So they don't have a mother?" she asked. "No, at least not yet." he replied.

Konata, giving her signature smile, snaked her arms around his and said, "You know, if you want, I can be their Mommy." Alex, slightly annoyed but also blushing, pulled his arm away, turned away and said, "Look, I'm sure you're nice and all, but you're too young for me." "For the love of God, what do I have to do to prove that I'm 18?" she almost yelled but stifled herself to merely a loud talking so as to not wake up the kids. Alex didn't really respond to that question. He just got up and said, "I'm gonna see if the office has any spare cots that you can sleep in." In the end, though, Alex decided to take the cot and give Konata the bed. And Konata slept well that night.

This was the start of Konata Izumi navigating through a desert wasteland alongside Alex and his adopted kids. And more adventures were to follow.
