Part Seven
The gang came over late Sunday afternoon. Giles even met them there. They knocked on the door and was greeted by... Spike?
"What are you doing here?" Buffy asked more rudely than intended. It was just a surprise to see Spike out during the day.
"Slept over to take care of the whelp. He can't handle his alcohol." He walked away from them not caring if they came in or not. "Your friends are here," Spike said as he sat down on the chair. Xander was taking up the entire couch. Selfish git.
"Ugh," Xander somehow managed to get out.
Willow rushed over and knelt beside Xander who had a trash can beside him. "Oh, Xan. What did you do?"
Despite feeling like he was going to throw up at any moment Xander replied, "I had fun. Spike brought whiskey."
Spike was given dirty looks by everyone in the room. He ignored them all. "He's fine. I've gotten him to eat and drink plenty of water. Even gave him some aspirin. Not that anyone cares but I'm missing my poker game today."
"Spike's been taking good care of me. He's even helped me use the bathroom." Even with his eyes closed he felt everyone looking at him. "I meant he helped me get to the bathroom. I'm perfectly fine going pee alone."
Giles muttered, "good Lord. Maybe we should come back another day."
"No, no, no," Xander replied forcing himself into a sitting position. He turned green.
With vampire speed Spike grabbed the trash can and pushed it almost in Xander's face just as he started to vomit. He had made the mistake two hours ago thinking Xander was well enough to make it himself. Once Xander was done Spike handed him some tissue to wipe his mouth. "I'm gonna get you some more water."
While Spike was in the kitchen the girls fawned over Xander. "I'm glad you had fun with Spike, Xan, but maybe next time don't drink so much?" Buffy suggested. As much as she hated that Xander got drunk and was miserable right now she could see a change in him. Their Xander was coming back.
"Yeah... I learned don't follow the lead of a vampire with alcohol because they have a faster metabolism. Lucky bastards."
Tara laughed at that. Xander was funny even with a hangover. "I'm really glad you and Spike are getting along so well."
"He's really great once you get to know him," Xander told them. "I'm glad that he bought me that beer."
Spike was still in the kitchen when Xander said that. He closed his eyes as guilt washed over him.
Thanks to Spike, Xander was well enough to go to work the next day.
"Harris, you're looking chipper today." Xander boss Dave appeared beside him. "What did you have a hot date this weekend?"
"No date. A friend came over and hung out." Xander purposely left out the alcohol.
Dave didn't by that. "A 'friend' can't make someone look this happy."
What was Dave talking about? Sure he's been happier over the last month hanging out with Spike but Xander thought Dave was making it seem more than what it really was. "Spike's just a friend."
"Spike?" Dave asked the name throwing him off. Where would Xander have met a guy named Spike? It didn't really matter what matter what Xander was happy and he deserved that. "Look, if you're afraid anyone is going to give you a hard time with you being gay you don't have to worry about that. We have a strict zero-tolerance policy. No pressure if you don't want people to know I'll respect that." Dave smacked Xander on the shoulder. "Clock in before you'll be considered late."
Xander's mouth opened to tell Dave he wasn't gay but he was already walking away. He scratched his head as he went to clock in. Dave didn't know what he was talking about. Right?
Spike didn't sleep well. His shitty mattress didn't compare to the one in Xander's spare room. He'd never had a problem with it until now. Everything with Xander made things better. Spike settled into his lumpy chair, watching Jerry Springer while not actually paying attention to it.
Xander had been almost back to a hundred percent last night so Spike decided not to over stay his welcome so before Xander could kick him out he said he wanted to kill something before vanishing into the night.
Spike managed to find a couple vampires and used them as punching bags to work out his guilt. Guilt about what he was doing to Xander and guilt for the fact that he wasn't going to stop taking the girls money. "You're a piece of shit, William."
The least Spike could do to make it up to Xander was pay occasionally for both of them. Like a date. No, not like a date that's stupid. Like a secret date. Yeah, that was better. Why did Xander have to not be as annoying as Spike originally thought? Idiot, wanker with lips that were just begging to be kissed.
Spike was so screwed. He wasn't good at not declaring his feelings to a person. From either writing a poem or bringing pretty girls in pretty dresses. Neither would work on Xander. Did Spike even want to tell Xander how he felt? That would probably end in disaster. "William the bloody coward."
